1-0 out of 5 stars Not very enlightening
This book by the cover appears to be a very in-depth book when in fact it is meant to be a sort of text book. I have taught for over 4 years and this company was a primary source of text books. Over all their text books are of good quality, but leave a bit more to be desired. I found this book to be in-line with my history with this publisher. In fact if I had known that the book was by them I would not have purchased it for myself. That was my mistake for not paying closer attention.
3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Pathetic Editing
As usual for the past 15 years, the editors were asleep at the wheel and completely hosed the vital (to brain-damaged Linux) command line arguments -- at least on page 39 (Chapter 2: Adding a Larger Hard Disk to Your TiVo).
2-0 out of 5 stars System information
The current, non-DirecTV system, updated by satellite, is actually 7.1 (as of 9 August 2005). I haven't found that any of the hacking books are especialy useful for Series 2 boxes, especially as the software upgrades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Unix/Linux security books I own
I own a lot of security books and I try to keep up with what his happening. After reading a few reviews I had been wanting to buy this book until I attended a conference where the author was singing books. So I got my signed copy and I have to say I am pretty impressed with the material. As other people have mentioned here, the author's attitude is to get right to the point and to provide useful examples wherever possible. Part 1 seems to be the where most of the material for this book exists, specially chapter 4 "Remote Hacking". I was pleasantly surprised to read the end of chapter 4 where the author describes how to use my favourite Unix tool Zebedee to do remote port forwarding! I had used this tool to do many things but I wasnt aware how it could be used to perform port forwarding tricks. Hacking tips are arranged in the order of ports and so it is easy to look up vulnerabilities. The entire book is very well arranged . If there is ever a 2nd edition to this book, I will buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done
Got this book after I read a recent review. I found this book to contain some pretty cool attack & penetration techniques. Chapters like the one on NASL and the Zaurus PDA hacking are a nice addition. 3-0 out of 5 stars Too short, too many ommisions
While I understand the publisher's goal is to have some shorter, more consise hacking/cracking/security books, at least this book in the series has problems fulfilling that promise.I'd strongly recomend sticking with their Hacking Linux Exposed, Second Edition title, which is much more complete. HN:LUSPR is not portable (it's still 200 some pages) contrary to the title, so what's the point in something that doesn't take time to delve into security in enough depth?Reading just this book will leave huge holes in your security posture. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks
Have just gotten the book. Saved time and it helped restore my library. Has some cool items. In 30 minutes time have gotten a better understanding of my Ipod and Itunes. Looking forward to finishing the book to learn more. Thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Not hacking or insightful.
I will agree with others that none of the contents of this book are very interesting. All of the information can be found by applying 1) Common sense, 2) reading the product instructions, 3) doing a bit of research on your own online. 2-0 out of 5 stars Hacking in the sense that bubblegum is food
As the reviewer below suggests, this isn't a book so much about how to find cool new features/things to do with your Ipod as it is an instruction manual similar to what should have been supplied with the device to begin with. Most of the info either is available online or somewhat obvious, given the intuitiveness/limitations of the Itunes software and the UI of the device itself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confused, directionless book
InfoSec Career Hacking (ICH) is a confused, directionless book. It's a collection of contributions by various authors, three of which were previously published. The main text never states the goal of the text, so I turned to the description on the back cover: "A technical guide to landing (and keeping) a job in the information security field... If you want to refine those skills to land a top InfoSec job and employer-funded trip to Vegas next year, you've come to the right place." It sounds like ICH wants to be a sort of employment guide for "hackers," but it ends up as a muddle of some useful original material and recycled chapters from older Syngress titles.
2-0 out of 5 stars An easy read, but lack focus
Overall an easy book to read and actually quite enjoyable. However, the material lack focus. At times you think some of the authors must have missed a memo or two, and writing for a different book. This could be the fault of the publisher or editor. Take some of the pictures in Chapter 6 for example, I could barely tell that they were computers, let alone their brand or models. These blurry pictures are next to worthless in the book. The publisher could do better in the QA department.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that's been needed for a while
Even though the content in this book sways from one end of the information security spectrum to the other reaching the point of identity crisis, I really like its approach. I speak on this topic quite often and I'm finding it's the one area of information security that has remained mostly untouched - yet desperately needed - in this hot field. There are several success-related topics missing, but overall this book is a good read for those looking to take their information security careers to the next level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Samhain and Osiris
This is a solid introduction to Samhain and Osiris. It stars slow with an introduction to the topic and some chapters on process and specification that feel more management level in style. Then there are the chapters that cover the monitoring tools from installation through setup and continued use. The book is well written, but it could use some more illustrations. In particular in the tools chapters which are really at the heart of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The information necessary for you to understand the what, why, and how of host integrity monitoring, can be found in this book. Authors Brian Wotring, Bruce Potter, Rainer Wichmann and Marcus Ranum, have done an outstanding job of providing you with a book that walks you through the entire process of establishing host integrity monitoring, including the fundamentals, understanding threats, planning, deployment, administration and response.
4-0 out of 5 stars When did this happen, and where else is this going on in you domain?
Host integrity monitoring is the process by which system and network administrators validate and enforce the security of their systems. This can be a complex suite of approaches, tools, and methodologies, and it can be as simple as looking at loggin output. In the past, tools like Tripwire were used to check the configurations on hosts. The freeware version of this tool was limited in its manageability, which was available mainly in the commercial version.

Despite being (allegedly) written - in part at least - by a professional card fraud gang, the book offers only very basic information on both the way card fraudsters operate, and how they can be stopped.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and simple - just what I needed
I am a young entrepreneur. I took an introductory business risk management class to better understand the environment, and to avoid or at least minimize possible business problems. I found this book very helpful. The language is simple & clear enough to understand as I didn't have any anti-fraud background. I will definitely keep this as reference. I recommend this book for anybody selling on internet.

If you are new to the Web and the Internet, this book suggests how you can protect yourself against the various types of malware lurking out there in the Net. Like beware of downloading attachments from unknown senders. These might be viruses that could ruin your machine. It is recommended that you install an antivirus program, that can keep an eye out for the latest viruses.

1-0 out of 5 stars What!?
I bought this book a while back... as in years.Even then the information was so dated that you couldn't really get all that much information from it.Only way I'd pick it up is if I wanted to take a look back and dream of the old days, or learn how things might have worked if technology and methodology had not advanced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need To Know? Not Quite.
I'm a Unix System Admin, therefore, as you might guess, I have a real and tangible reason to be interested in hackers. Protecting information and my servers is part of my job. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth it

5-0 out of 5 stars Infostructure in geopardy?
This is a book is on, the most unexpected subjects: Information anarchy in utopia, Information anarchy in dystopia and Information utopia?
3-0 out of 5 stars Are The Libraries Safe Anymore For Decent Folks?
Anarchy is a governing system that eschews authority.Oligarchy governs from, through, and for authorities. These ideologies feed off each other dialectically; they are rapidly remaking our global information ecosystem: the increasing speed and amount of information and the basic paradox of the digital world onto the real world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anarchy for thee, not for me.
While many academics do tend to "fog" their arguments I think this book by Professor Siva Vaidhyanathan of New York University is a fresh, provocative, and extremely readable discourse on the nature of freedom and control in a world awash with technology that is often over-hyped and under-analyzed.Prof. Vaidhyanathan is a fresh voice analyzing the extremely important issue of, in his words, the "availability and accessibility of the substance of expression and thus the possibility of public discussion and creativity" (185). As a veteran of the culture wars spawned by punk rock's initial social (and later in a watered-down form) commercial success, I have seen the reliance on empty sloganeering and naive calls for anarchy from punks who couldn't organize taking out the trash if they had all week.Prof. Vaidhyanathan rejects simplistic calls for decentralization and anarchy, and instead provides a rich and nuanced historical context for why we should return to what he calls "Civic Republicanism," a return to the idea of public trust and mutual dependency that many Americans have lost sight of in the rather simplistic way most debates have been framed in the battle over public control of information. One of the virtues of Prof. Vaidhyanathan's book is that he does not provide any easy answer or EFF manifestos, just a reliance on the basic responsibility of human beings to engage in meaningful dialogue about the Faustian bargains involved in new technologies. And in an age that promises unparalleled control and unparalleled, resistance, a call for a meaningful and participatory dialogue is a breath of fresh air. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information For Programmers
As fast as developers and vendors can pump out new software the crackers of the world break the protection schemes. Rather than paying a fair price for the software many people visit underground cracker sites and warez FTP sites to download illegally cracked versions of software.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of cracking prevention
Before I read this book I knew very little about cracking software. After reading this book I still know very little.I agree with the author when he says that to protect yourself, you need a good understanding of what you're up against. It also helps when you apply a protection method if you can check it against something. The book falls way short of teaching you ways to crack software.
2-0 out of 5 stars More of a FAQ than educational
It's great that there's a book like this out to begin with, but I was disappointed to see the focus only on Windows applications and mostly on how to use existing tools to harden your software. It doesn't really cover as much as I would have liked to have seen on how to actually implement crack-resistant software.Much of the book's contents are FAQ-like and refer only to currently available tools (a very current practical approach versus a broader theoretical academic approach). If the exact problem you're trying to solve is explicitly addressed in this book, you're golden - if not, you're completely out of luck with regards to the book's information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars amazing!
Warks book is one of the most refreshing books I have read from this year. His argument about the change in capitalism and the role of intellectual "property" will become increasingly important. His use of Debord, Marx and Deleuze to deal with the rise of the vectorial class is great!Anyone interested in internet theory, postmodern theory or anarchist theory should really read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging
McKensie Wark calls the state "an envelope" whose primary function is to "police representations." I think this way of construing nations has a such a forceful brevity that it disallows simple rebuttal. An envelope loosely unifies, contains, closes, enfolds multiplicities into a unit, a projectile. And what does "policing representaitons" mean?Determing the extent to which an identity (political, social, religious, etc) can be commodified and incorporated into the state in order to perpetuate itself and yet give the specific identity the illusion of freedom and self-determination. This can be seen in the way cops determine routes and surrond the perimeter at protests (J20 for instance) and give us some limited form of freedom, 'allowing us free speech' while at the same time, if we concede to this limited freedom, we give up the possibility of confronting the form of freedom they allow, i.e., freedom surrounded by police with weapons telling you when you can move, and hence, we are neutralized without even knowing it. This is how incredibly dispossessed peoples can identify with the state, since the state gives them a possibility, a "dream" of a moment of limited freedom. The minute a real threat is formulated, ie, a threat to the economy or to the collective hallucination of the state itself, you better bet that you don't pass go or collect $200 but go straight to jail. This is why, perhaps, the state makes it incredibly clear that hackers are NOT political prisoners. Those
5-0 out of 5 stars McKenzie Wark's 'A Hacker Manifesto'
Intellectual property may become the defining question of our times for those who work in and between the media and the academy. McKenzie Wark's'A Hacker Manifesto' is a major intervention in this arena, one that suggests new ways of asking (and answering) 'the property question.' Wark's manifesto is beautifully written in spare, elegant prose of rare economy. The book is structured in short numbered theses, borrowing from Guy Debord's 'Society of the Spectacle', and these are often built around irresistible aphorisms - 'education is slavery', 'invention is the mother of necessity', 'information wants to be free but is everywhere in chains.' Other versions of this text exist online, but this is the one to get: the notes alone (exclusive to this version) are stimulating reading, and the book is handsomely designed. It is a work which deserves to be widely read, used, discussed, taught, argued with - and hacked. ... Read more

Editorial Review

On January 15, 1990, the AT&T long-distance phone network crashed. Although it was eventually ruled an accident, the event was a wake-up call to telephone companies and law enforcement agencies everywhere, exposing the fragility of the systems that we all heavily depend on. The feds decided that the time had come to crack down on the handful of computer hackers they had been monitoring for several years in connection with the phone companies. The term "hacker" is about to become a household word, and not in the sense of "great programming."Read more

At 225 pages you can breeze through it rather quickly, enjoying afascinating look at young people with the commitment, energy and intelligence it took to hack and learn new systems. It was a time when the phone company was deregulated but Ma Bell's offspring still held quite a lot of power and were irresistible to phone phreaks and hackers. If you don't expect too much you'll enjoy a look into the hacker sub-culture. They were explorers and not criminals. I attended several conferences with these guys in later years and can report that their pursuit of knowledge is still fascinating. Social engineering is still the best hack for me. Plik!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on hackers sub-culture
Actually this is a great book about the hacker sub-culture, indeed one of the bests I have ever read. This book describes very well the whole story and social aspects of New York City hackers but fails when dealing with technical aspects or lacks it. I can afirm it's a good book for people who are intersted to know how poor guys in Queens, NY, rised from nothing to create one of the most notorious hacker gang ever and to improve knowledge about the late 80's and early 90's american hacker scene.

3-0 out of 5 stars Journalistic view of one event
This is not a book about hackers; it's a book about some specific hackers who happen to come after much of the action was concluded. Even more than that, it's a book biased toward New York which contains every implied slander of Texas that one can meld into a narrative about hackers. I like the description of MOD, and thought the authors did an excellent job of building up the character of these kids, but find that for the size of this book, it missed an absolute raft of important knowledge. Why do people hack? What, besides damaged egos, makes it thrilling to have forbidden knowledge? How could our society be so incompetent as to leave these giant security holes everywhere? And finally: what was the global hacking culture like, outside of the spacy little land of New York City? The boys from LOD are treated as props and their contributions ignored, which is infuriating to someone who is familiar with the goings-on in the computer underground at that time. Also, technical writing is not difficult, and while this book tries to stay non-technical, I have to ask "why?" There are interesting details which are overlooked and could have been conveyed in English. These authors do a credible job of buildup, but then hype a few incidents into some metaphor for cyberspace, and consequently halve the strength of their book. I would recommend this to people who cannot simply pick up a copy of "2600" magazine or "Phrack" and figure it out for themselves, but not to anyone who cares about the heart, soul or brains of hacker culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time...
... someone harvested the entertainment potential afforded by those "URGENT BUSINESS PROPOSITION" letters we all see in our email inboxes. The scammers are apparently involved in "advance fee fraud". Many people think the game is that they promise millions, then they ask you to give up bank info, then they go in and steal your account (boy would they be disappointed in mine!). But no.... without giving up all the details, the goal for the scammers is to ask the victim to forward various fees before he can collect the promised millions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic nonsense
I am quite familiar with steganography. This book is just a nonsense.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Provocative Story
"Hacking a Terror Network" tells a convincing tale of Cyber Terrorism. This fictional story uses communication technology readily available today to spin a fascinating tale a potential scenarios for any criminal element and easy enough for the novice computer user.By combining emotional motivation and computer savvy, terrorist threats press US counterterrorism teams to keep ahead of electronic means of causing death and destruction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to stenography and its uses.
I found this book to be interesting both as a fiction and technical material. The plot develops around a very hot topic of these days - the war on terrorism. Unlike your "conventional" terrorists, the characters in this book use Internet and computer technology to secretly plan and launch an attack against the US.

1-0 out of 5 stars
Littlejohn Shinder writes a fairly topical analyses of various facets of cybercrime -including several- what can only be described as Computers 101 sections but if you're a typical n00b then it will all seem like a glorious epiphany. In Ch 4 she gets a little on the didactic side where she attempts to debunk the various stereotypes and cliched mindsets associated with the hacking community but she falls far short of any real insight.
4-0 out of 5 stars Handy little book
Overall, a very good book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Neither Fish Nor Fowl
This is a tough book to review as it tries to speak to two very different audiences -- corporate information security and law enforcement professionals.
