2-0 out of 5 stars Between begginer and serious but lost the focus
In my opinion this is a book built arround a very good example of an application, but not a book to start with nor a book for the experts.5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book is extremely broad yet contains more sample code than most other books! Really enjoyed the Pocket Service sample!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great content
When I picked this book up I was pleased to find useful tools and tips included in both the book and on the CD. The code for the datetimepicker alone pretty much justifies the cost of the book in my opinion. Having the embedded Visual Tools, SQLCE, and the other tools all on one CD is also a good thing. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Forget this book!
So called Dr.CE doesn't show any important trick used in professional applications. Buy Burdick's CE book instead!

5-0 out of 5 stars the CE book to have
This book is an amazing reference! It discusses topics and ideas not covered anywhere else. Plus, it emphasizes issues related to porting from the desktop to CE and some related common mistakes in that area. There'seven a great index with code samples forevery CE-API function.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it less

4-0 out of 5 stars good for IM residents
The only weakness is that there's no machanism of the meds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pocket drug dosage reference
I am a resident physician and I find this book indispensable. It is the best reference for carrying in your pocket in order to look up drug doses. It has some other useful information such as pregnancy category, brand names, relative cost, peds dosing and other small but useful features. Nice index. I use this book several times a day every day (well, every work day), and it is the one book I make sure is always in my pocket. I use the classic T-shirt edition - it fits in the top pocket of my lab coat so nicely.
5-0 out of 5 stars always a valuable purchase
I use ePocrates for most of my minute to minute drug referencing but tarascon still has good information, especially less common brand names for common drugs and also very convenient other stuff like the dermatome diagrams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book for building your first PC
When I built my own PC back in the summer of 1999, I relied upon this book as my primary resource.Certainly, it is somewhat out-of-date now (but what computer book isn't by the time it reaches the shelves), but the fact remains that the primary steps and considerations in building a computer are basically unchanged. You have to choose a CPU, a hard drive, a case, a floppy drive, a CD/DVD drive, a modem, a video card, a sound card, speakers, and a mouse.Bigelow walks you through the process of making these individual decisions within the context of your primary objective. He then walks you through assembling the parts into your very own new computer. In terms of covering the basics, I would still rank this book among the best, especially for non-technical readers.Certainly, the information on installing an operating system deals mainly with Windows 95 but I had no trouble installing Windows 98.Anyone installing Windows NT/2000/XP will need to refer to other reference material, but this book strikes me as being intended mainly for home users looking to build or update a system of their own--even now, most such users will be looking at installing 98 or ME.Also, I would consider the installation of an OS as somewhat separate from actually building a system, and it is the latter pursuit toward which this book is geared.4-0 out of 5 stars Reviews Refer to Older Editions . . .
Many, if not all, of the reviews listed here for this title refer to older editions and readers should take note of that. This is the edition that should satisfy previous reviewers who wanted to see this book brought up-to-date in 2000.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad as an introduction. Plenty of outdated material.
If your're a first time computer builder probably this book is of some help. But most of more advanced material in this book is outdated. There's no reference to Windows 98 or NT specific installation troubleshouting. Many topics are more then shallow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book ... well worth the money
A well written developer text that is well worth the money. If you need to quickly get up to speed on Palm Databases and/or Palm development, this is a book that you will want to read from cover-to-cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic Book!
This book is a must for everyone interested in programming with Palm C based SDK. Eric goes into a great detail to get your up to speed with this things. And they are tricky!5-0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone developing professional software on Palm
What's interesting is that the book still holds its value despite being two years old. What I really like about it is that the author from the beginning focuses on peculiarities of Palm OS platform. And they are many! In no other book did I see such a deep overview of what is possible with Palm OS SDK. Eric clearly explains what can be done and what should not be done with Palm OS. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best technical support I've had in years!
Probably the most common complaint that this book will get is for the lack of the example code on a supporting CD. When I emailed author Jon Kilburn (his email address is in the book) requesting the NS Basic source code he not only got back to me within a few hours but had attached the source code, the raw artwork, the final project, and a letter detailing the NS Basic software version to bring my attention that software updates may have rendered some of the code "old". If I wasn't already going to give it 5 stars, I would for the support alone!
2-0 out of 5 stars Skimpy on details and containing inaccuracies
The author provides a fair representation of the subject of programming in Basic using 3 different development environments for the Palm OS. The example GolfPro database program was a good choice for demonstrating various features and techniques, providing a basis for comparison of AppForge, CASL, and NSBasic.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to get going in Mobile Development

2-0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought this used....
If you find this book for less than $12 USD somewhere, it's probably worth the money just to look at some more code samples. However, the examples in this book are buggy, and are hard to isolate and recycle into your own projects.
2-0 out of 5 stars What was advanced about this book?
I am a professional Palm developer, and I currently have four books on Palm programming at my desk. This is by far the worst, and the least informative.I'm not sure what is in this that would let it claim to be 'advanced'.Everything covered in this book was summarily covered in Neil Rhodes' book.I always open it up, trying to find something useful, but it's just not in there.Don't waste your money.I've given it two stars, just in case you don't have Rhodes' book, you might find some small value in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
As someone who does Wireless Palm programming for a living, this is generally the first book I look at for programming hints... Having said that, this book is not a beginners book, it does not explain all topics, but covers some of the more obscure features you can get involved with. If you want to go tromping around in the database of the native apps, you will find some tidbits that are not easily discovered otherwise. But you should still be prepared to read the source code for those apps too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You can't escape the feeling that it's not the whole story
Andrea Butter worked for Palm. David Pogue is by all accounts a nice guy who wouldn't deliberately besmirch someone. Thus both may have had understandable reasons for not telling the entire of what has become the Palm and Handspring debacle. At least that's my feeling: the whole story just isn't here.
4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Chronology
From Hawkins initial vision until early 2002, Piloting Palm chronicles the birth of the handheld industry's first real success story: Palm. The triumphs and set-backs are re-lived in detail in this page-turner that is augmented by numerous quotes from Hawkins and the others who lived it.The book is more of a chronology, and with the exception of evidencing a very pro-Palm and later pro-Handspring bias (one of the authors worked for Palm's marketing division previously), the book avoids drawing any conclusions about the companies and their successes and failures.

1-0 out of 5 stars For beginners and Microsoft sycophants only
This book will help you if you received no manual with your Pocket PC or if you're a beginner with computers, and if you share the author's fawning adoration of Microsoft. If you have any understanding of how to make Windows work, though, the manual that came with your Pocket PC and some experimentation will get you farther than spending money on this book would. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just What the Title Says
Windows CE Clear and Simple is just what the title claims it is -- a simple, clear introduction to Windows CE.Covering both Handheld PCs (including H/PC Pro's) and Palm-size PCs, this book covers the mostcommonly-used Windows CE features and functions, and will answer all of thequestions a new Windows CE user will have. While this book does notcontain information about the new Windows-Powered Pocket PCs, it is a veryuseful introduction to new users of both Palm-size and Handheld PCs.It'seasy to read, with pictures, tips and notes to really help new users findthe information they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows CE Clear & Simple
GREAT book! Easy/quick reading. Very nicely laid out and easy to follow. The title is very appropriate--"Clear & Simple". Step by step explanations and examples are given on how to use all of the features (plusmany I wasn't even aware of) for both the H/PC and the P/PC. Neither of thetwo manuals I have for my H/PC gave me 1/10th the information that thisbook did! Put your Microsoft manuals in a drawer and use this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrow, don't buy: Low information content and poor editing
This is a short book (146 pages) that purports to give step-by-step instructions for the major Pocket PC applications, and also to provide tips and notes. The concept and format are promising, but the content does not measure up to the potential.5-0 out of 5 stars Beginners to Techies
Well I found this book really helpful, I have got an Ipaq and although Craig goes over the basics, he also adds value by incorporating more technical things too. In my opinion this is a must for people to buy who want to know more about their Pocket PC, I did, and I don't regret it at all, it certainly beats the other ones that I have tried.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Beginner!
This book does exactly what it says it will: it explains the basic functions of the Pocket PC in a clear and concise manner and is perfect for a beginning Pocket PC user. There are many little tips thrown in along the way that even an intermediate user will find useful, but if you're an advanced user, this book wasn't written for you. ... Read more
