4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for Palm users
At first I thought Id lose my time buying this book, since one can find so many books around. But later on I realized it was really worth the price. Its a bargain! I made the mistake of buying it before looking at amazon.com and paid its original price. Anyway, I learned the lesson. Next time...1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive album of screenshots

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice collection of hardware hacks
OK, of course I say it's a nice collection; I'm the author. :) This combination book/DVD is a selection of our favorite hacks from Hardware Hacking: Have Fun While Voiding Your Warranty and Game Console Hacking. If you're curious about modifying hardware and electronic products to do things they weren't intended to do, then this collection is for you. It's a great way to get involved in the hobby without breaking the bank. Cheaper than either of the previously mentioned larger books, only 4 chapters are printed (Tools of the Warranty-Voiding Trade, Electrical Engineering Basics, Operating Systems Overview, and Coding 101) The actual hacks (the rest of the material) is on the included DVD in PDF and HTML format with high-resolution images (most of them in color, as opposed to the black and white of the previous books). Some of the hacks include: Declawing your Cuecat, hacking the Playstation 2, hacking the iPod, modifications for the classic/retro Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, and 8-bit systems, hacking the Xbox, and how to build your own DVR/Home Theater PC. Don't be afraid to modify or hack your hardware - have fun voiding your warranty! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not real programming
If you are serious about developing for the Palm OS platform look at other books like the one from O'Reilly (ASIN 1565928563). This book is very lightweight and only covers forms "programming" but will not teach you how to join the growing Palm OS developer community. It is not the first book from Sams that I checkout, I dont know how they let this one out.

2-0 out of 5 stars What it isn't..
This book is a compendium of introductions to 3 different application programmers interfaces (API)s. In each case it is just enough to wet the appetite. 3-0 out of 5 stars 24 hours?Depends on what you intend to do.
I bought and read this book in 24 hours. It falls short of teaching the reader how to program well in 24 hours. It's failing is that it goes over too many tools with broad sweeping generality. There are 4 tools discussed in the book. This is a good intro to Palm OS and how to write code for it in general.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A very bacic book
The Complete Palm Pilot is a very simplistic manual that is written for a computer beginner using the Palm Pilot. It lacks detailed information on basic concepts including "graffiti" and other details that even a novicewill need. A major part of the manual is devoted to a very basicdescriptions of add-on programs. In summery, this book is too simple foreven beginners and I do not recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Incomplete Disappointment
I purchased this book and was roundly disappointed by its muddy writing and neverending review of out-of-date software.I felt misled and humiliated for spending money on this book when most of what comprises thetext can be found for free on the internet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty basic and getting out of date...
Potential readers should be aware of two facts about the first edition:(1) There is NO mention of the Palm III or O.S. 3; happily, much of what is true of the Palm Pilot carries over to the Palm III, but how is one to know what?; (2) Some 183 pages of the 320 pages of text (57% of the book!!) is devoted to descriptions of third party software.(3) In many cases SEVERAL versions of the shareware/freeware have come and gone since the version numbers mentioned in the text.More current information is readily available on the web. (4) Many problems in Chapter 4 (Troubleshooting...) refer to long dead versions of the operating system.[New problems await you ;)]In short, a ho-hum, sort of like reading about Lotus 1a, or WordPerfect 5.1, or dBaseII. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little to basic.
In my opinion this book is a rewrite of the Palm Handbook. It's very basic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost like painting by numbers
For a brand new user of a Palm Pilot, it can be a bit intimidating to look at the user guide. The Little Palm book tremendously eased the pain of learning a new technology.5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful for "Late Adaptors"
I got burned over a previous problem last year with hotsynching the Palm V with Windows NT (3Com didn't have a "fix" for it then), so I returned my first one. I waited almost a year before I tried again withanother Palm V, and I wanted a quick indoctrination into the ins-and-outsof how to use it. This book was the ticket, and then some. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only useful palm book
Best palm book, i didnt know i can do so many things with my palm, covers all details, and its very easy to understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do More with Your Palm Pilot
'Palm @ Work & Play' is a practical, concise guide on how to apply your Palm to everyday life and save it from hanging out with the dust bunnies. This book is unique in that it is not a rehash of Palm's manual and it is not a bunch of programs and demos thrown together. The great part was that no other software was needed than the core ones that come standard with my Palm. I really enjoyed chapter 4 on how to use my Date Book function for tracking my job hunting efforts and keep a fitness schedule. Standing in a checkout line, or waiting for a bus has gone from wasted time to production, fun or relax time; author Courtney Thompson shows over 40 ways to do it. His love of education shows; he suggests how both teachers and students can Palm handhelds for scheduling, course outlines, and course content. Chapter 9 entitled 'Forward Thinking', has suggestions on possible future uses for Palm technology and asks the question: "Palm engineers, are you listening?". This book is a must read for every Palm user who really wants to get the most from their Palm handheld and get some great suggestions of how to do more with their Palm device. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars IT STOPS WORKING AFTER A YEAR
I purchased the 2004 copy and nowhere does it say that it is a subscription model. After my copy stopped working after a year, I contacted Zagat customer support and this is what they said:
3-0 out of 5 stars You don't buy it -- you RENT it
The Zagat reviews are great, and the software gives you the power of a small, user-friendly database. My only complaint is that you can't see the restaurant location on a map.The reviews from Vindigo's software (check out Vindigo's web site for more information about this product) aren't nearly as good, but the mapping feature is outstanding.I couldn't live without Vindigo, but I think the quality of the reviews from Zagat still offer enough value to justify owning both.
1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: THIS PROGRAM DIES AFTER ONE YEAR
I enjoyed using Zagat to Go for a year. Then the program refused to run. When I contacted Zagat, I was told that the program was actually a subscription. The program will not run unless you renew the subscription every year. This policy is not mentioned anywhere in the online descriptions. I can understand not being able to upgrade without paying the subscription, but to cripple the program with a drop-dead date is unforgivable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Non-techie
Are you looking for a learning resource for handheld computers, but are intimidated by technical jargon and written instructions? Unlike most other technical publications, this book offers a basic understanding of the Palm/Handspring PDA without resorting to confusing technical instructions. Each page has one or more graphical image(s) of the handheld screen followed by a minimum of instruction. The author allows you to work through the book at your own pace, one step at a time, in the privacy of your home. This book is aimed very directly at the newby, non-technical user. There are other handheld computing books available that would better meet the needs of the experienced handheld user.

4-0 out of 5 stars Palm & Handspring PDAs for Visual Learners
As the title states, this book is designed for visual learners. The style and the layout of the book includes clear and concise screen shots of various PDA devices.By using minimal text, readers should be able to easily follow the examples of the various PDA tasks. This book would be particularly helpful for self-directed learners and people like me who do not have a lot of time to read a huge book or manual in order to learn how to use the basic features of a PDA. The book would also be very useful in workshop or other training situations, partucularly for novice PDA users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Number One Guide for Palms and Handspring
If you want a book to teach you how to use your Palm or Handspring, you have found it!Recently my school district purchased thirteen handspring neos for our teachers. It was my responsiblity to train these teachers.Visibooks Palm and Handspring PDAs for Visual Learns was a lifesaver. The book has great pictures and takes the user step by step through learning process. Needless to say, I quickly learned all the featurs of the PDA's and was able to teach others using this book. The troubleshooting section is also very helpful when you are unable to hot sync.If you own a Palm or Handspring, I would recommend that you purchase this book to learn to all the features of your PDA. ...
