5-0 out of 5 stars Significant improvements since first edition
I have read the first edition of this book years before. This second edition has significant improvements. Core topic (classification, clustering, association rules) is very detailed and much easier to read. The author also add much material about advanced topics such as graph mining, multimedia mining, stream and time series mining, etc. Although these advanced topics are not as well writen as core topics, at least you will get idea about what's going on in these areas.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1 star is too much for this book
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this book. The book is put together by gathering some data mining concepts padded with tons of buzzwords to "teach" you about data mining. It really fails to teach you anything and it really succeeds to confuse the hell out of the reader. The language used on this book is the poorest I have ever seen in my entire life. The people how wrote this book and the publishers who published it should be ashamed of themselves. It is a shame that I had to pay for this piece of work because I have to read it for a course I am taking and I really dread opening it every week.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Data Mining Books
This book is easily one of the best on data mining. The one flaw I see is the meager attention given to neural networks.Coverage is practical, not theoretical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware
Beware of buying this book used, without the cd-rom included. You need the cd-rom more than the book itself.Without the cd-rom you will be unable to complete any assignments because the tests and quizzes are in the disc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Aperture LOWER VERSIONS
BEWARE.one star just to get your attention!
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
I was given the opportunity to review this book by an acquaintance, and I am very glad for the opportunity. It has totally changed the way I approach my digital workflow. My previous workflow started with a folder for each year, containing a folder for each month.Inside the monthly folders were still other folders for each shoot.I would download my digital RAW files in the root of each shoot folder. Then I would create 3 separate subfolders inside each shoot folder, (1) alt (for altered ), (2) fin (for final), and (3) out (for output).I would place the various iterations of each file in these directories for retrieval and sorting.I would open each RAW file in Nikon Capture and evaluate the shot. Then I would make any necessary alteration and save the required output files, whether for web, print, or archive.Sometimes the images would be opened in Photoshop for further work, and saved back to the same directory structure. This worked fairly well, but it was a very slow process.Finding images weeks, months, and years later was very difficult without going into each directory and looking through the saved files. Now I keep all of my files in the Aperture program, and it allows me to save all of the iterations side-by-side.Even those alterations made in Photoshop are saved as "versions" of my original digital file.It has cut my workflow time down significantly, but even more important, it has allowed me to keep track of all of the versions of my files together, making the finding and printing of previous files manageable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
I had recently purchased a digital SLR (after decades of film photography) and I had many other scanned images 'from way back when.'And with a fairly big digital project looming, I needed to be 'in the know' with Aperture -- and fast. The book was written well and gave the hands-on learner as well as the visual student something to get a hold of.This is my first Amazon review of a product (though I've purchased a ton of stuff over the years), but I really wanted to give my 'Thumbs Up' to this book for getting me set and ready to go.I did use the book as reference often, as I recalled, "I remember doing this in a lesson... but how.." and Orlando Luna & Ben Long got me prepared.Without much effort I got a photo-journalistic view of a recent wedding, edited & organized and then set up on one of my websites with Aperture. And I can safely say that it wouldn't have happened without this book.THANKS for your effors Orlando & Ben and Peachpress!I would recommend this book first, if you're new to Aperture, before going on to others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - highly recommend it!
Video Shooter is an excellent instructional guide. Braverman's unprecedented expertise and superior storytelling skills help guide readers through all the key topics and everything you'd need to know for professional video shooting and production. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars BARRY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT
What I like most about Mr. Braverman's book is how it speaks not only to the technical side but more so to the creative side. His insights are geared toward using talent and instinct within the given parameters of the tools and medium. The book was a fun and easy read with a humorous, conversational style and lots of pictures (which makes perfect sense given it's a book involving a visual medium). I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to shoot a story (emphasis on STORY) without getting lost in the wonder of technology yet using that very technology only to free up the story. Hats off to Mr. Braverman for a handy how-to guide to get that story shot and out on screens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - A Must-Have
This book far exceeded my expectations, even after reading all the five star reviews. The text is both engaging and informative - a rare combination for what might be termed a "how-to" type book.Braverman's book actually stands as an interesting read aside from the technical and artistic information it imparts. His style is refreshingly candid and his guidance practical.

3-0 out of 5 stars Four stars if reorganized and distilled, five if updated
I first looked at Inside Network Perimeter Security, 2nd Ed (INPS:2E) for my blog, in May 2005.I decided to try reading it this week because I've been reading books on related topics.Individually, the INPS:2E authors largely know their craft.Unfortunately, the book is so poorly organized and diffused that I don't know why other reviewers rate it so highly.Furthermore, the choice of material covered and certain recommendations drag the book down.A third edition might be promising, but I recommend avoiding INPS:2E.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
What a book...As a relative new comer to IT security I'm digesting all I can lay my hands on. This book by SANS Institute is a rare gem. It starts easy and escalates subject by subject. This is the kind of book where I read a chapter, think about it for a week or so, then pick it up for another chapter. There's just too much for me to blast through, and gather all the knowlege. I award 5 stars and I'm not even finished yet

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book at discussing how to defend your network perimeter

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative, and more than just schematic after schematic
I expected this book to be much more technical than it was. Rather than a collection of schematics and wiring diagrams, DerEngel combines many personal stories with the results of his work. It's quite an interesting read, although I don't know if the book will make hardware hackers out of anyone. Some people may be able to hack their modems with the ready-to-use tools the author discusses, but most people probably aren't going to want to potentially destroy their modems by cracking open the case and messing with the circuit board components. Most of the discussion takes it for granted that the reader is already be familiar with basic electrical engineering and Radio Shack. The tools he uses are Windows programs, so unix users may need to find similar tools to follow along with the hacks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Smart reverse engineering methods to enhance ANY embedded device !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Photoshop Basics
My husband and I are taking a beginning Photoshop class at the local adult school. Instead of a more extensive and difficult text we chose to supplement the class with Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies. It moves inmore logical sequence than the class and enabled us to begin editing our photos immediately. It also allowed us to focus onclass instruction without taking notes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
Good reference for ideas of how to do almost anything in Photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Software that's getting ever more powerful
Thee seems to be a trend in software that they have to keep comming up with new releases to get people to send in more money. But after version three or four, it seems that the new features that they are adding aren't really features that you'd use. Look at Microsoft Word, which of the new features do you really use? But also look at WordPad. It's grown until it's about the equivalent of Word 3.0 or something like that. It's faster, smaller, easier to use and pretty much does what you want, in some cases even better than Word itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Like most good books dedicated to buying and selling on eBay this book fits that category nicely. It is aimed at the more serious seller and goes into several deep layers on techniques and strategies to make your activities lucrative and profitable. In all I like this book because it does contain a lot of useful information at whatever lengths you decide to take you're your eBay activities. If you want to really get out there in the trenches, this book will accommodate that ambition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real "love-hate" relationship......
That's exactly what this book offers. You'll absolutely love the information the author offers, but you'll also hate yourself for not adding it to your eBay reference library sooner. The information discussed, and revealed, in this book will make you think, explore and create what you have wanted all those months you finally decided to be a successful eBay seller.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for powersellers & advanced users
The title of my review is not meant to suggest that this book won't work for beginners. It simply means that this is a book that ANY eBay user will be able to appreciate, even powersellers who assume there's nothing they can learn from a guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, a Disappointment
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)

I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer, not a pro.But I enjoy "post processing" my digital images and Photoshop Elements is a good product to use.But there are many nuances to the product and Scott Kelby does an excellent job at presenting those capabilities. His examples are straightforward and useful.I recommend this book highly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Title should also include - How to abuse a picture with photoshop
Granted, there are some nice pics in this booklet and some useful techniques which would be helpful if I had more than one strobe, but I was looking more for practical lighting tips without over-abusing a digital image with Photoshop.Almost 2/3 of the sample photos have some kind of photoshop tampering. That's not photography, that's graphic design.Other than that, I'm glad that I didn't have to pay the $34.95 that was the suggested price on the actual booklet (I paid about $15).Overall, it's good for ideas on how to approach a situation with regards to lighting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stuck in the 80's
As an overall guide to lighting techniques, this book gets all the basics right. However, when it comes to inspiring the reader it doesn't fare so well. Some of the photographs in "The Best of Photographic Lighting" are bordering on attrocious - many of them firmly stuck in the 80's tradition of painful soft lighting ala oldschool Playboy (maybe this shouldn't surprise me, since the cover is much lit this way). Too many tacky pictures of urban saxophone players lit "creatively".
4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Photograpic Lighting: Techniques and Images for Digital Photographers
This is well written book with the basic lighting techniques for the motivated photographer. It is not a tutorial type of book but it provides a starting point which provides the reader the conceptual frame work in order to use lighting. This is a good book that is well illustraded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Reference for the Rest of Us
This is my first review of a book, so please allow me a few mistakes. I am a chemist who is being forced, by work circumstances, to become more of an IT person than I thought possible. I will be administering a client-server system in our laboratory. I needed to find a book that would expand on the very limited knowledge that I currently possess. I found that book in "Windows Server 2003 for Dummies". The first couple of chapters are basic network setups, after that they got more in depth and to the point of what I needed to know. I'm obviously still learning and I use the book as a constant reference. I have since purchased "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for Dummies". I only hope I find this book as useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what the title says...
...it provides a Windows Server 2003 reference for people who are starting from scratch (a.k.a. Dummies). I'm really shocked by the other reviews. This book promises no coverage whatsoever of any exam objectives for Microsoft's exams. I am a, sometimes blunt, redneck from West Virginia (now transplanted to Ohio), and I must say that only a true dummy would buy this book to prepare for an exam. In that light only should the book be condemned (I have a real problem with the whole "for dummies" series as an adult educator myself, but that's another story for another review.), in that a true dummy buying the book is probably making a bad decision anyway - as they do not have the capacity to make an educated decision, since, by definition, a dummy (according to webster: one without intelligence; and intelligence is a lack of the ability to learn) cannot become educated. In the end, the market for the "for dummies" books should be about .001 percent since that's about how many people would be "dummies".
1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Book
I wish they has 0 stars as a choice to rate this book. This book is for someone who has very little experience or who has never installed a server. I usually like the dummies books as they are easier to read and understand but this one was a DUD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, Version II
This updated edition has been revamped with new tips for the latest version of Photoshop. It has Davis' usual mix of practical techniques with impressive illustrations that show the kind of results you can expect.A DVD set is also available if you want to watch the lessons on your computer. All in all a good entry in the Wow series.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Wow: Photoshop for Photography(2nd Edition)
This book is amazing. It helped take my Photoshop skills to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy and be Wowed
I had the pleasure of sitting through Jack's class while on a Geek Cruise called "Macmania" and he refered to his book. I bought it wondering just how good the book would be relative to Jack in the flesh and I have to say that the book presents very well indeed. This is not always true for some teachers but Jack has the gift to be able to clearly and effectively communicate the needed information to make Photoshop sing for non-professional (and even them at times!) users. The title of "how to wow" really does say it all. The book is full of easy to use techniques that will really punch up an average picture to near-fine art quality, assuming it's a good picture to start. And even then, it can really help salvage a picture that might be so-so to a very acceptable picture. Many of the techniques are very easy to use and make alot of sense once you try it once. In my own case, I used his tips on distortionfilters to straighten out a picture of a building in just seconds. No bellows needed or fancy 3rd party filters needed. He shows how to selectively adjust contrast, color, brightness, color correction and alot more without the typical photoshop overhead of a dozen layers and such. He does push the use of raw files and after watching what can be done with raw files, I can see why. But, he does not leave those who can only shoot JPEGs behind, many of tips and tricks work just as well with JPEGs and he demos them that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical techniques that will have an impact on your ETL
Concepts and technical approaches for analyzing and improving the usefullness of source data are presented in a well organized and logical sequence. Not quite a roadmap/algorithm for achieving data quality; it's balanced a little more on the conceptual side. The techniques and concepts presented are ones you _will_ want to begin using if you have any data quality issues in your source data (and who doesn't), I guarantee that.As a working ETL developer referencing disparate, low quality data, this book has had an impact on our approach, our results, and our project.Short and to the point, it's an easy study also!

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book! The scoop on Data Profiling.
Jack Olson coined the term "data profiling" and essentially founded this important new field in the area of data quality assessment. His revolutionary techniques, outlined in this book, can provide IT professionals with an important new set of tools for analyzing data quality. This is a must read for anyone working in the data quality field today.I also recommend it for people in related fields such as data warehousing, Enterprise Application Integration, and database design. With so many "me too" books in the computer field, it's a real joy to find a book that really does break new ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Data Quality Book (repost)
This book is the clearest, most practical book on data profiling and data quality that I have seen. Jack breaks down data quality issues into specific categories, and leaves you with a vision of what to do if you are building a data warehouse. His practical experience shows through very clearly and he talks to the IT developer (the reader) very effectively.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MS Security
Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars preparing for exam
Very helpful for exam 70-350 and daily tasks as IT Network security administrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good exam and real world based book
I went to the MOC2824B training a few months ago and didn't like it that much. If you, like me go to the official training you will find that is very much alike. But the autors included a lot of real world notes and insights for the exam on the book that you wont find on the MOC manual. Be ready to mount the practices on a virtual machine environment or real one if you have all the hardware, you will have fun anyways. Labs are filled with very usefull skill building exercises that will entertain you and teach you big time what this great product is all about. I passed the exam last week with 894/1000, and I thank not only my experience with the product but also all the good advice from this book. If you are looking to pass the exam, this is your book!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Newman
I absolutely have to admit that the book is very simple to read and understand but for my course sake, my professor has to use an additional book to give me the depth the course requires.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand w/out a lot of junk
The Indian Government has adopted this book to all of its University courses on the subject of security.Teaching them how to hack our systems ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars Give This Book a Miss
I'm sorry. I gave Newman 150 pages in the interest of fairness. But this is the worst textbook I've ever had in any class, and I've been going to school off and on for 44 years! It reads as if the guy was walking down the street with three or four hard copies of his manuscript on the way to the publisher, and fell down the subway stairs. Then, since he was up against a publishing deadline, he just shuffled the papers back together and submitted them for publication. Then, obviously, the publisher was in a big hurry, too, because nobody bothered to proof-read this abomination. I don't know very much about some of the subjects in this book, but the errors and ommissions on the subjects that I do know something about cast suspicion on all of the rest.IMHO somebody should confiscate Newman's keyboard, and he should be barred from writing ever again!Run from this book as fast as your little feet will carry you! Please note that Amazon's system doesn't allow a zero star rating, or that's what I would call this stinker. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars decent book but not enough
Half of this book is good information and the other half is an index with answers to the book questions.I liked the CD test engine- it helped me pass the 100 question Security+ test today. This book alone is 70% of what you need to pass Security+.Spend your money on measureup.com and transcenders and fill in your knowledge from there.I was able to pass by drilling for a week on 500 different questions rather than reading the fastpass and this book.Careful with measureup as the test I bought was last edited in 2002 but it was still a big help!

5-0 out of 5 stars On the mark for those that want just the facts.
I recently passed the Security+ exam and the Wiley Security+ Prep Guide was one of my main books. Don't let the size of it fool you as it covers the topics including needed details. Though not an Exam Cram type book it is for those users that like to cut out all the fluff and already understand most of the material on the Security+ exam. Though I could have probably passed with this book alone, if you are not comfortable about the topics and are not failry familiar with tcp/ip, VPN's, routers, firewalls, access controls, PKI, malware, etc you may not want to use this as your first book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, which covers a lot of finer details
I used this book in conjuntion with the Syngress book and exam cram 2 practice questions. This book definitely covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. You could read this in 2 or 3 days if you sat down and took your time with it.It actually filled in alot of gaps that the Syngress book had (small details that actually show up on the exam) Using those 3 books, I scored an 874 on the exam on March 4th. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Concise Overview to Get One Started
You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Up To Speed With New Strategies, Tools and Resources
This newest edition of "Investing Online for Dummies" reflects the latest changes and improvements to online investing Web sites. Addresses building an online information system, setting up a basic investment strategy, determining how much to invest, selecting an online broker and trading online, finding the right investments, performing Internet transactions securely, saving on commissions, managing a portfolio, and much more.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide for online investing
As I surf the Web, I often feel that it's like visiting a library where all the books have been spilled on the floor. The information is there but I don't know where to begin my search. "Investing Online For Dummies" explained how to get started, steered me to free or low cost online services, pointed out the important parts of Web sites, and showed me the process of online investing.
