2-0 out of 5 stars Lot of info, but horrible to read, review
I got this book for my PC Technology Class, I've used it for 2 weeks, and I just hate this book. The thing that gets me mad the most is that its ALL OVER THE PLACE. They'll be talking about the BIOS, then go to expansion slots for like 3 pages, and then go back to Bios's again (pg 197-208). It's very confusing to follow, they should have sections, instead of cramming everything without header titles. The only good thing I like about it is that is has a lot of info, but if you have the time, and patience to find it, then this book is probably OK for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just In Time
Taking a computer class one night a week is more than enough for any average person w/ a full-time job. After the registration, the school location and the reality of how much books cost new these days. Amazon came through for me a week before class and this was after tracking all the various campuses and tips from friends. Buying the book used same me easily $30 to $40. The is in great condition, you would of thought it was new.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good resource, but only to a point. . .
I enrolled in an online course with Thomson Education Direct (which has recently changed to Penn Foster). The course was designed to prepare me to pass the A+ exam and this textbook was part of the package I received after I graduated. The book is loaded with information and includes end-of-chapter questions and exercises to help you prepare for the A+ exam, plus a CD with further instructional material and test questions.I take the tests first thing, to see where I stand, and find that, unfortunately, the test questions are riddled with mistakes, but I think, No problem.Though the book is a fifth edition, the CD is probably a new thing and that could account for the mistakes.I'll just use the textbook to check the test questions and make sure they're correct.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.

2-0 out of 5 stars insufficient for all levels
I found this book to be inadequate at all levels. It does not go into sufficient detail for beginners, and neither does it provide rigor for the experienced controls student. Do yourself a favor and buy separate texts for the basics (like Brogan's Modern Control Theory) and for the advanced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Up to this time, there are no 5 stars books in Linear Systems. However, this book is one of the best 4 stars books available for the subject.Through the book, the author sometimes assumes that you know or understandsome topic, formula,...etc. without mentioning it. However, you can do it,but it may take you some time to figure out what it is. If you are goodenough in linear algebra you will have no problems to handle the book up tothe last page. Chapter 2 & 3 are the most important chapters in thebook because they prepare you for the rest of the book. MATLAB is beingused in a nice and helpful way to visualize some concepts and applicationsof the linear control theory. I recommend this book as a textbook for anintroductory linear systems course and also for self teaching purposes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Insufficent
My overall impression with this book is:satisfactory.Though there are a more errors then desired, and a few that are pretty confusing, the majority of the book is accurate and very instructive.I would recommendthis book as a reference for introductory treatment of Linear System Theoryand DI just completed this book in the beginning of March.Having aControls background I found this book both helpful and instructive, yetlacking in sufficient detailed explanation on some tough topics.Chapter2: 'Mathematical Descriptions of Systems' was very helpful with thedetailed definitions and easy examples. Chapter 3: 'Linear Algebra' is achapter that could use expanding. Some of the topics addressed in thissection are speedily discussed and rapidly completed. The first edition ofthis book was chided for it length. This edition must be chided for itbrevity. However, when lack of explanation abounds, examples and homeworkproblems can make up for deficient instruction.Chapters 4 through 6 areeasy to follow and through in their treatment.Chapter 7, however, isanother chapter where too much explanation was removed. The examples arehard to follow in this chapter, and there are a few very confusingmistakes.Chapters 8 and 9 are very well written, though confused attimes. However, they yield a sufficient knowledge of the addressed topics. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This book helped me a lot. I recently deployed over 250 ASAs and was running into a lot of problems with the IPS SSM and VPN features. I got most of my answers from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Amatuer
What a waste of time it was reading this book. If you are not very familiar with FW/IPS or VPN then this may be helpful, but if you have been working with this technology and Cisco's products that address these technologies (ASA, PIX, IPS, VPN3k) then please don't refer to this joke. Go online to cisco.com and do the research. Sometimes it felt as if whitepapers were copied and pasted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Cisco ASA.
I bought this book 2 weeks back for an ASA project that my company is going to deploy. I am really amused to see that each chapter starts off with an in-depth architectural overview of the features to be discussed. It then provides full step-by-step configuration examples with lots of deployment scenarios. It even covers many troubleshooting and monitoring examples that helped me a lot when I started deploying it in my lab network

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying this book
I am a high-tech marketing manager and an adjunct professor. From both the real-world business side as well as the academic side, I found this book to have little value. It spends page after page on general issues regarding Internet Marketing, and never gets to anything that could be used or implemented in the business world. Topics are explained without giving specific details as to how to implement the Internet Marketing idea. A very specific example is a description of viral marketing which the author refers to as "Creating a Wave." The short section goes on to say that free media, publicity and word of mouth are important. Of course they are. But how do you get them? I feel sorry for the students that are required to purchase this book. I guess they'll have to learn Internet Marketing on the job. I'm glad I only paid $10 for this book used instead of the $90+ list price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but dated
This is a classic. One of the most serious earlier works on the topic. Professor Hanson brought a very solid theoretical framework to Web marketing. The book came at a time when we finally all wanted to get more rigouros with the "New Economy". I perused it again recently for a seminar I am giving, and it is still an excellent reference book. I would give four stars to an updated edition. I don't know if they are planning it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A second edition is urgently needed
I used the first edition in one of my e-commerce courses. While the book migth still deserve 3 stars it is very much dated and my students had to do much additional research in the net to round most of the topics. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Optimizing compilers, which turn human-readable programming languages into the smallest, most efficient machine code possible, are among the most complex pieces of software ever written. Building a compiler is both science and black art and demands an intimate knowledge of data structures, algorithms, high-level programming languages, and processor architectures and their instruction sets. 2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing at best
I've seen chapter 14 of this book referenced (by a university professor giving suggestion to his students, not by a random guy) as:
1-0 out of 5 stars Good for seasoned compiler writers, bad for CS students
Ok, let's be fair. This book provides a broad coverage of useful optimizations and it will be useful in case you work writing compilers AND have some experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Advances in compiler design do not get much press these days. The reasons for this are unclear, but no doubt the perception that compilers need no further improvement has something to do with this. This book, written by one of the leading experts on compilers, certainly dispels this belief. Once readers get used to the idiosyncratic ICAN (Informal Compiler Algorithm Notation) invented by the author and used throughout the book, they get a comprehensive overview of compilers, especially that of optimization. Compilers for the SPARC, PowerPC, DEC, and Pentium architectures are treated in the book. The predominant emphasis of the book is in optimization, and so a few more recent and important topics in compiler construction, such as partial evaluation, are not discussed. Readers are expected to have a prior background in elementary compiler theory. My primary interest in reading the book was to gain insight into the compilation issues that arise in symbolic programming languages such as LISP and Prolog. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for self-study
This book came to the rescue before my exam in the introductory course on logic design at uni and helped me achieve a good grade in the exam, even though I didn't attend class most of the time. It's well written and easy to understand, even for students who aren't native English speakers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid introduction to basics
This is a sound, competent introduction to the elements of contemporary logic design. It covers all the basics: boolean logic, gate implementations, and the elements of binary arithmetic. It talks about minimization techniques, logic delays, and some of the classic logic implementation technologies (PLAs, decoders, muxes). It gives the basics of common notation, including timing diagrams, gate-level schematics, and so on. The last few chapters discuss synchronous (clocked) design and design of state machines, including standard reduction techniques. All the basics of modern design are there. A good student will start to see the number of different ways any problem can be solved, and start to recongize that no one perspective will solve all problems, at least not well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good material, bad editing!
As far as material and explanations, the book is great.I just have no tolerance for the countless number of grammatical errors it contains. At least one on every page.Granted, we are engineering majors, but it's a university-level textbook! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book
I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical,Funny,To the Point.
After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The mysteries of Photoshop unlocked
I have been struggling to make full use of Photoshop CS2's remarkable power, and it wasn't until reading and using Colin Smith's wonderful book that it all finally began to make sense. Not only is everything explained in clear language in a step-by-step way, but the companion CD allows you to go through the steps and get hands-on experience working with Photoshop so you can really understand what you're doing.
5-0 out of 5 stars no doubt about it
......in less time than it takes to get up, carry the trash to the bin 15yds. from where i sit,.... adobe raw's wonder, became a part of my thinking...... i am not nesessarily a teach yourself book person, but i was familiar with colin' work, and commend the way he " shares " information, so i opted to purchase this gem of a manual. suffice to say, i've not been bored yet. In less than 10 minuets, raw became a whole new dimension, and figuring out the bridge ( somewhat ! ), was not far behind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Covering all the new features of CS2

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction and an excellent educational perspective
This book is excellent for a novice in AI. Chapter by chapter - though chapters vary in thoroughness and detail - the book illustrates AI techniques by family by accessibly presenting the problems that motivate the techniques, and the logic applied to implement them (pseudo-code).
4-0 out of 5 stars wide range of techniques, including neural networks
The authors furnish a voluminous and up to date survey of AI. Covering the gamut of ideas and computational techniques common to the field. Unsurprisingly, there is plenty of discussion about formal logic methods and how to develop inferences in a manner doable by a computer. This is expanded into describing ontologies and how to find knowledge in a learning process. All of these are hard topics that try to attack a fundamentally difficult problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for its overviews and historical notes
This book was used in both my undergraduate and graduate courses in artificial intelligence. It is a very readable book, and an enormously useful reference.I believe they at least do a cursory overview of the most critical concepts in AI, and if they don't, there are usually great references at the end of the chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training for FCP Certification
It is great to have a project ready to start editing on a moments notice and really provides some valuable working experience that will help you with a real job.Enjoy! This book is great resource for intermediate editors who wish to start the journey to be an advanced Final Cut Pro.I have enjoyed the entire Apple Training Series, the only thing I don't like about them is that it seems that a new book with a lot of similar material will come out every year depending on the FC studio releases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Editing Practice
This book is an essential! Numerous projects and plenty of footage so you can
5-0 out of 5 stars Student
This book was excellent. It thoroughly covered all proponents in what is to be found in FCP 5. There is a whole chapter on multi-cam editing which is a new feature on FCP. The DVD-ROM makes it easy for a reader to do the same excersies talked about in the book. However, this is an advanced editing book so if you are unfamiliar with the basics of FCP then you might want to start on an intermidiate lesson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book to get started in OCAP
We started our OCAP project prior to the arrival of this book and had to rely on digging through all of the different, confusingly referenced, standards.Every chapter of this book caused a light bulb to click on with a big "ah ha!"Don't get started without reading a copy of this book. It's a 10 to 1 reduction in pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars insightful, and well-written
The authors give a well-written introduction as well as many insights into the design of interactive tv systems. This is a must-have for anyone new in this field. The book presents much more information than those on the interactive-mhp.org website.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book you need if you are serious about IDTV
This an excellent book!A must have! I strongly recommend it to anyone willing to have a broad and at the same time in-depth view into the numerous concepts and APIs necessary for designing IDTV applications. Several code snippets are provided to illustrate how each API can be used: this can help save a lot of time as the DVB MHP and OCAP specs are a little bit hermetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Tablet PC
I really like the author's approach, since he actually gives both relevant technical information and provides the practical business practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tablet PC book not for learning the Tablet
This book is not for someone learning to really use the Tablet PC.It is about his system of organization and how to use the Tablet PC as a key device in organizing your life, as the title indicates.I was disappointed in the book overall as I was looking for a book that would educate the physicians I support in better use of the Tablet itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reminder for Professionals
As I read the book it reminded me of all the things I should be doing to keep my work organized. The tablet PC is a great tool which I encorporated into my daily routine prior to reading. This book gave me helpful hints on how to do things effectively and efficently on my tablet. The book is written using the beta and initial version of the tablet PC tools. If you purchase you must download the updates of Chapters 3 & 4.This update gives a better understanding of the current tools of the tablet PC.It is worth the money in time saved. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks depth
I bought the book because the table of contents showed that the book covered the topics comprehensively. However, there is a serious lack of depth. I think the book is good for students who are just learning about linux and embedded systems, but not as useful for the more serious and experienced developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful
I take this opportunity to congratulate authors on the job WELL DONE. This book emphasizes on "programming" aspect of embedded Linux which is missing from earlier books like one from karim yaghmour. The topics such as MTD, real time, embedded graphics, uclinux are presented very clearly and in detailed manner. Overall, it's GOOD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Little Relevant Info from a programmer's perspective
If you buy a server with Windows 2003 Server R2 pre-installed, there is very little you need to do in order to get it up and running as a web/apps server. As such, the book, while very clear, has joined my legions of forgottable IT books. It's not bad, it's just not filled with enough info to make it a must have.I supposed it allowed me to feel better that I wasn't alone in my configuration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Server Crash Course
A good way to quickly catch up on Server management. About the only thing missing is Active Directory. Instead of just saying that its too big of a topic to cover, it would be nice to have at least a brief guideline to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Manual
This is a great introduction manual if you have never installed or used Windows Server 2003.I found it very easy to understand and it walked
