5-0 out of 5 stars Very valuable contribution to the history of computing
Professor Mindell has rendered a great service to the history of computing through painstaking original research that supports this well-written book.He examines how civilian mathematicians, engineers, and scientists worked on the practical problem of improving the effectiveness of anti-air-craft fire during World War II.AT&T's Bell Telephone Laboratories, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, and U.S. Navy contractors like Sperry Gyroscope and Ford Instruments collaborated in this interdisciplinary endeavor.Fire control entailed obtaining data on incoming planes or missiles, projecting their course, and computing an intercepting solution.Analog computers were proven and suited for this circumstance.

4-0 out of 5 stars a excellent though futile effort
Roland describes what was ultimately a failure. He talks about a period when Artificial Intelligence was HOT. When a slew of startups, mostly centered around Route 128 in Boston, like Thinking Machines, were founded to exploit the imminent debut of true AI. Many of these startups were funded by DARPA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Representation of a Brilliant and Quixotic Pioneer
I read this work in the late 1980s, and am still impressed with it to this day. It is one of the few completely fair and complete business biographies ever written.5-0 out of 5 stars do you want a chance to change the world?
this is an absorbing, riveting true account of how an incredible visionary inspired and cajoled both talented and ordinary people to achieve things they could never dream of. I read this shortly after Jobs was ousted from Apple in the 80s and to witness how he came back to save Apple from oblivion a decade later is one of the great comeback stories of our time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun for reminiscing
I first started working on both mainframes and personal computers in the 1970s, and have worked on a wide variety of machines.
4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book on a usually dry topic, great photos!
Most books on the history of computing are dry treatises without a lot of good illustrations, but this one is different. More of an art book than serious history (see the other reviews) it presents the history of computing with a wonderful collection of large color illustrations, such as fantastic close-up shots of Engelbart's original mouse from 1968, hilariously weird UNIVAC ads from the '50s, rare & hard to find screen shots of early applications, as well as images from popular culture that reflected the computing mentality of the era. There are better books for the facts, but not many in league with this one for pure style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studying the Development of Cyberpunk
This book starts with William Gibson's 1984 novel 'Neuromancer' as being the genesis of Cyberpunk. Mr. Gibson takes some offense at this as there were others before him. In fact you might consider Frankenstein as the start, although to be sure 'cyber' hadn't been invented then. Numerous other science fiction novels have something with computer enhancement to a human, even if it is only with 'smart' prostheses replacing a lost arm.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Go to Woo.
I read this book while my husband was studying honours year computer science. It was,in one word, readable.I could understand it, and it gave me a good grasp of the field and a better appreciation of whatspecialists in computer science actually do with this stuff.I am not acomputer scientist, but like to be active in understanding what my husbandis up to, and I could take this book in.So, while it is probably not forthe complete novice, I found it educational for an arts grad who hasobtained all of her information on computing osmotically. 3-0 out of 5 stars Still quite good!
I got hold of a copy from a friend who also bought one. I was told that this was a classic, and sure it is. I'd not use it today for Cryptografy education (New stuff evolves every month), but it DO contains alot of othergems, still very intresting today which you could use for education - Ifyou can get hold of a copy i suggest that you buy it asap!

5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless invaluble book for cryptography and data security
This is one of the first book in this field. It was one of the most cited book. This book deals with cryptography with algorithm approches. Apart from cryptography, data security, especially for secure operating systems,is presented. I got a copy of the book in the early 1980s when I was astudent. I also taught cryptography with it. I would like to recommend thebook as the first book to be read for a student with interest incryptography. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of details but misses the important points
This book is loaded with details, but it carries little understanding or feel for the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC). Also it does contain outright errors. The BINAC's cycle time was not reduced to 2.5 megacycles. It ran at 4 megacycles, but the cycle time of the UNIVAC was 2.5 megacyles because of the difficulties with fine tuning the Binac. In fact, Pres Eckert was so concerned that the mercury delay line memory might not work for the UNIVAC that he secretly had me and Art Gehring do the logical design of the UNIVAC using electrostatic storage. This machine was microcoded. I believe it was the first one microcoded. Of course, it was never built because the mercury delay-line memory worked.
4-0 out of 5 stars very early days
This book is graced with fabled names, from the dawn of modern computing. Perhaps the best known is Grace Hopper, who coined the term "bug". [She did more than that, of course.] But others like Eckert and Mauchly also made their contributions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A prelude to fully automated scientific discovery
This book is interesting in that it attempts to cast questions of the scientific method into the language and concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), instead of in terms of philosophy, as is usually done. The two main camps of philosophy of science, namely inductivism, represented by Sir Francis Bacon, and that of falsificationism, represented by Sir Karl Popper are both discussed in the context of AI. Two examples, one dealing with the discovery of the laws of planetary motion due to Johannes Kepler, and the discovery of sulphonamide drugs, are chosen to illustrate the author's ideas. The author asserts that these examples do not entirely agree with either Bacon or Popper. Kepler used an "intuitive induction" which involved human insight and creativity, which is quite different from the "mechanical induction" of Bacon. The discovery of sulphonamide drugs was a more "mechanized" process, but the author believes it was more of a "mechanical falsification" rather than Baconian induction. In addition, this discovery, he asserts, has introduced the concept of heuristics, which of course is ubiquitous in artificial intelligence. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for, but I ended up well informed
The author takes you into the world of Special Operations Forces, including some of their deployments throughout Iran, Latin America, Afghanistan and Iraq; he exposes what an active role groups like the "Activity", Delta Force etc, played in those missions. Even though it gives you information about these missions, the author didn't go deep enough into the boots on the ground personal experience and fire fights details.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a classic
Software Engineering Economics is one of the biggest classics in software engineering books. Still today (2004) much of the content is valid and the discussions are very useful. When reading this book you should realize that it's from 1981 and that much has changed since then.4-0 out of 5 stars A classic "must read" - but be aware of its limitations
"Software Engineering Economics" is *the* book to be considered for anybody wishing to seriously enter the world of software cost estimation - only if it were because of the extremely great influence this book has had on this very peculiar aspect of software engineering. In this aspect, Barry Boehm is undoubtly the master.5-0 out of 5 stars Economic analysis of software decisions making
A classic reference on estimating the cost of software projects, economic analysis techniques, and applying economic principals to upper-level management of software projects. The intimidating appearance of the text on initial inspection is overcome by the author's excellent organization of the content into small chapters and his lucid writing style. The definition of a software cost model called the constructive cost model (COCOMO) is a major centerpiece. Another centerpiece is the chapters on cost-effectiveness analysis, multiple goal decision analysis, dealing with uncertainties and the value of information, software project planning and control, and improving software productivity. Alternatives to cost models such as experts, analogy, Parkinson, price-to-win, top-down, and bottom-up are discussed in Chapter 22. Uses several case studies for example a transaction processing system. Contains an excellent set of questions and exercises at the end of each chapter.Read more

I read this book as preparation for my Ph.D. comprehensive exams.Specifically, I wanted to improve my understanding of materials modelling and density functional theory. This book did accomplish this.It provides a very comprehensive study of how interatomic forces are calculated in solids.Density functional theory, tight binding, empirical potentials, linear response theory, phonon calculation, and elastic constants were all here.Read more

This collection represents for me some of the best writings on electronic music aesthetics' I have read. As a practicing explorer of using electronics as both sound source and composing tool,I found the essays here full of thought provoking questions as to the uniqueness and problems of the medium and inspiring connections to theories outside of the music discipline such as linguistics and information theory.
