Editorial Review

Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible For Web Developers
This book truly is a definitive resource for DHTML development.I originally read this book when Ajax was taking off as an acronym and a movement.I am VERY glad that I read this book to set a solid background in the Javascript and XHTML underpinnings of Ajax - moving on to Ajax topics has been straightforward after digesting Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have this book always on my side
I have this book always on my side, and when I started to learn DHTML I used a lot. Now I used less often but I still using it every once in a While. Actually I need to buy a second copy because the first one is so wear out that it started to lose pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow
After reading Elizabeth Castro's HTML book I thought this would be a good next step. However, this book does not stack up anywhere as readable as Castro's book. The CSS part is OK, but the javascript part is poor with hard-to-follow examples of Alice in Wonderland images.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
I am about half way through the book and like it so far. I wasn't quite sure what to expect though I have purchased Visual QuickStart books before and have been happy with them. All in all I feel like it was a good purchase that I can use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy editing--typos all over!
I don't know how all the mistakes in this book got past the editors. It is more than just careless typos. There are numerous inconsitancies between the CSS examples given and the web page results.Only as far as the second chapter, I've lost count of the inconsistancies--enough to make me give up on the book. I've checked out the companion web site, and the corrections are not to be found. The poor quality of the book also shakes my faith in Peachpit Press's Visual Quickstart series, which up until now I have enjoyed using. ... I am currently working on a project that requires Oracle Application Express (APEX) and was fortunate to have this book. Note that although the book's title indicates HTML-DB, it is based on the latest Oracle Application Express 2.0. The authors have done an exceptional job in providing great technical content along with useful examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book - a must have for your library
When I first got interested in DHTML I purchased both of Teague's books on DHTML and CSS. They have proved to be invaluable. His writing is easy to understand. The format is easy to follow and consistent throughout. He uses just enough illustrations to demonstrate the subject. His knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS is exemplary and the examples used in the book are pretty much bug/error free (unlike many books I've read that contain code). If you're just getting started with DHTML, get both of Teague's books. You won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Flipped the Switch that other books didn't
I've actually been using CSS for about 8 years now. Mostly just for font/color control, as positioning support wasn't wide spread until the last few years.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook
This is the sequel to the excellent DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web. It is merely a cookbook of techniques, whereas the first book is an outstanding introduction to an advanced subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the rest..............GET THIS BOOK!
In the world of .NET, there is asp.net Profressional from Wrox Press..........NOW, in the world of JavaScript, there is this book...........IT'S TREMENDOUS............it's NOT ONLY a Cookbook, it has the theory behind JavaScript ESSENTIALS (variables, strings, objects, windows, document, the list goes on and on) THAT YOU WON'T FIND ELSEWHERE.I can't say enough about this book.I have "dabbled" in JavaScript for years, NEVER feeling comfortable with it.........now, thanks to this book, I do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for what it is
In the computer world, cookbook / tips / "hack" style books are a funny thing.Unlike food cookbooks you purchase when you have a specific culinary goal, scripting cookbooks are typically bought without much knowledge of the information that they are going to present to you. This can be doubly so when you are purchasing from an online vendor that has not made the table of contents (TOC) available. At the time I write this, Amazon.com has not.O'Reilly's does, and I encourage you to visit this title's TOC page on O'Reilly's web site first before you purchase.
3-0 out of 5 stars Emphasis on Cookbook
The book was good, but definitely a cookbook style approach. I found it incomplete as a learning tool. While it gave examples and explained how they worked, there were a lot of things left lacking. You will be able to use examples from the book, if what you want is in there, and even be able to modify them, but to really learn to program javascript, you will need more.

Editorial Review

This Microsoft title is a definitive reference guide to developing applications that take advantage of the dynamic HTML (DHTML) features of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. It is short on tutorial material but offers a very detailed programmer's reference to DHTML. However, readers should be familiar with Microsoft VBScript and JScript to make the most of it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool
This is a great DHTML reference tool.If you want a good, thorough DHTML reference, this is the package to get.I am very satisfied with this product, as it has helped largely in my DHTML scripting.I'd recommend this product to anyone who is trying to learn DHTML or is already an expert and needs a solid reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing reference tool, but lacking Netscape coverage
This is, without any doubt, the most frequently used book in my collection.Until recently, it had a permanent place on my desktop. It is a complete DHTML (and CSS) reference. It is not, as stated above, a tutorial of any kind.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference For IE 5 and DHTML!
This is an excellent reference book for those programmers who want aprinted copy of Microsoft's DHTML. The CD is packed with great informationfrom Microsoft's MSDN website with regards to DHTML and IE 5.0. This is NOTa tutorial on DHTML, so if that is what you are looking for, get anotherbook. It will however help you find all the information that you need tosuccessfully write code for web page projects related to IE 5.0. This bookis exactly what it says it is! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but hard to read hence hard to learn
This book has a lot of great stuff but you have to have the patience to sit down and read it line by line. Can't scan through the book and hope to learn something. Even need to type in the script and try it yourself. Some of the most important ideas the author just covered in two sentences. It does teach a lot of useful stuff but it is absolutely not a beginner's book. Save me from my job interview.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complicated but definately worth reading
(this was originally published on www.last-child.com)
2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT a book for beginners
As a developer with no prior JavaScript experience, I've been very disappointed with this book. In the Introduction section, the author says "Some experience with JavaScript might also be useful, but it is by no means critical" (Page VIII) which isn't true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book, I have learned a lot from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars W3C DOM way of developing DHTML applications
What I like about this book is that it focuses on the W3C DOM way of developing DHTML client applications. Most other Dynamic HTML books focus too much document.write(), proprietary extensions to web standards, or server side dynamic web pages.1-0 out of 5 stars This should be DUHtml
I have to say while I enjoyed the writing style of this book, it is a total waste of time and money. There are many better resources available to learn dhtml for free on the web. The examples in the book, if they work, are repeated throughout the text without giving new examples. And they will not validate with W3C's validators.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars vbScript is for IE5
The Code works the examples are easy to follow and the title of the book says IE5 Dynamic HTML which means that it has to work with vbscript. this is another excellent Wrox book

2-0 out of 5 stars examples use VBScript, not Javascript
Although the subject matter is well covered, all the code examples that I saw are written in VBScript. That renders the book effectively useless if you code your client side script in javascript (which is the industry standard).5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
Although web browsers have evolved beyond IE5, this is still a great book. It is well organized and easily referenced. I keep it handy for the quick look up need without having to go into the MSDN library. There is a heavy emphasis on VBScript. It is worth the investment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book has answers for my questions
I'm converting 170 WinHelp projects created in RoboHelp 4.0 to 13 HTML help projects, and am having to create the project files myself because the Robo engines don't do what I need them to do. I bought this book to get some help and support. I have found answers to many questions in this book. I've used it as a reference, not as a primary resource though. Its usefulness really depends on your current understanding of HTML and what you need to learn. If you need or want to edit the source HTML or your project files, this book could be of use to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid book
While still hoping for a "bible" on HTML Help, this book is a good starting point for understanding HTML Help. Jeannine wisely avoids using help authoring tools, and instead describes clearly and succinctly how to build HTML Help using the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop and text editors or HTML editors.5-0 out of 5 stars Book's Web site is now active

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are prepared for it.
If you already have a background in HTML and JavaScript then you are ready for this text. The author does a nice job of introducing the concepts behind Dynamic HTML. Usually this type of book would be enormous because the subject is complex (see the O'Reilly text for a really big book on this subject). This book, however, covers the most common things you can do with Dynamic HTML without going overboard on the details. The book is also fun to read and, most importantly, there isn't a single error in any of the code listings when run on a modern browser. Not many books can make that claim these days. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF MONEY
This book is awful. Save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really essential
I found this book quite dissapointing. I thought from what I read in the book summary that it would be a book on more advanced techniques, but it was really quite basic. Not a good beginning point for learners, and too basic for people who know more than the basics. Also, about 40% of the book is made up of reference appendices, disappointing, since the book isn't all that long (7 chapters, only 3-4 of which actually address real DHMTL). I would not have purchased this book if I knew before hand what I know now.

2-0 out of 5 stars Serious flaws--I'm disappointed by my fellow reviewers.
The author uses browser version sniffing to achieve cross-browser DHTML, which means your code WILL break in the future if you follow his advice. Object detection is the way to go. I'm angry about the way this joker discusses CSS2 positioning properties such as float, clear, and position. He simply says, "These aren't supported the same way in all browsers, so just avoid them for now." I guess he has no faith in his own flawed cross-browser techniques! Hah! There are a couple good examples for beginners on how to hide and animate menus, but they are all heavily based on his terrible cross-browser javascript code. Finally, this book is very short. To make things worse, the pages are small, and the font-size is big. I recommend the 1400 page "Dynamic HTML - The Definitive Reference" second edition by Danny Goodman. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Should you buy this book?
I am a college student taking a class using this book to help in creating web pages. We have found errors in the book. In some of the review work and case probems it tells you do certain thing that the book never told you how to do it. I would do more research before I bought this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not technically accurate
The "Includes XHTL coverage throughout" claim on the front cover and the publisher's review is misleading. VERY misleading. While the coverage of the book is well thought out and implemented, the author does NOT use xhtml throughout, proper coverage of xhtml is relegated to a single appendix. The xhtml is what I would call "pseudo-covered" in the rest of the book. For example, proper xhtml requires the use of an xml declarative statement and a DOCTYPE, among other things. The author leaves these out in almost every example. He gets some stuff right like the br / for an xhtml break tag and then totally blows the rest. As an example onMouseOver as an event handler will NOT validate as proper xhtml 1.0 Strict or xhtml 1.1 because xhtml requires all tags and attributes to be totally lowercase and yet the author uses it (among numerous other errors.) If you're going to claim something as teaching xhtml, then you should get it right. If you are learning from this book - great. You'll get a very good foundation. But be aware that Mr. Carey is also teaching you some things that are incorrect. Make sure you validate the scripts at the w3c validator as xhtml 1.1 or xhtml 1.0 strict and you'll see what I mean.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best HTML book, but definitely a good one.
Like other reviewers, I've used this book in a community college class, and, like the others, find the book does a good job by itself! The example tutorials are easy to follow (although the examples are kind of drab!), additional reference information is included, and being in color definitely helps. I've used this book as a reference when customizing public layouts for my own use. I would say the book is more of a "valiant attempt" at Javascript, which would require a book in itself. Likewise, I was surprised at how often the CSS section didn't help me with some CSS code I was modifying. And I'll add that, of the web technologies out there, you're better off learning Javascript and PHP than DHTML. Not the best HTML book, but definitely a good one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you're proficient at HTML, yet still fuzzy about Dynamic HTML, you're definitely not alone. Since the two browser heavyweights--Microsoft and Netscape--offer different flavors of DHTML, this promising technical advance for the Web is still in flux. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is excellent book: the language is easy to understand / to read, complete reference for beginner and good price too. The author is well known in Web Monkey.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not a book for professionals
JavaScript was dragged kicking and screaming into the ridiculous morass that is DHTML.Netscape has since abandoned its support for layers, so this book has become seriously outdated.DHTML is basically a dead end and it will soon go the way of the dodo.Even the tricks in this book aren't supported by newer versions of IE and Netscape, and most of the code examples in the book are incorrect anyway. You can go to the site to get the code for free, so there's no reason to buy a book full of incorrect code. When it was published it had cute tricks, but very few of them were actually practical. The only practical part of the book was the portion dealing with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) which are now widely used. There are much better books on CSS than this one...O'Reilly's Definitive Guide on CSS springs to mind...and there are plenty of free web references you can visit to get up to speed on CSS.Start with microsoft.com and save your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars DHTML
This is not a beginner book you need to be comfortable with HTML and even JavaScript. This does get you going in DHTML and has a great appendixes and index which outline code and code properties. It tells you what code works in Explorer and Netscape and even goes as far as to put the ones separate which require specific code. The book teaches you about Cascading Style Sheets. This was a great start to DHTML! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A little old but still the best!
I've had this book for quite some time know and I still refer to it often. Scott Isaacs, one of the men representing Microsoft for the W3C at the time of the books writing and one of the creators of DHTML, does an outstanding job of introducing you to DHTML in a very easy to understand way. If you are familiar with JavaScript and HTML and need a better understanding of how to combine the two to produce interactive webpages this book is for you. While this book is a bit dated it does an excellent job of laying the foundation for the current state of DHTML. The lessons you learn from this book can be extended by visiting the authors website, probably one of THE best websites available today on cross-browser DHTML! This book is a definite buy!

2-0 out of 5 stars VB Scripters Move On
This book has a lot of fancy Java Script, but to those of us who refuse to write anything compatible with Netscrape (in other words, us VB Scripters), this book is difficult to read. You have to translate the miles of JScriptinto VB Script. Not much fun. VI Web Technologies reference is a usefuldaily reference, as well as MSDN Scripting Technologies web site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Useful
The only word I wanna say is that this book is definitively useful. For those Netscape browsers, the DHTML will not affect the layout of the page at all. If your browser doesn't like DHTML, that's your problem, not ourtechnology's problem. Think about this: If you have no feet, there is nouse for shoes. But we cannot deny the fact that shoes are useful. ... Read more
