3-0 out of 5 stars A little humor at the expense of a very, very rich man
Most of us have heard enough Microsoft jokes to know that you could fill a book with them; Tim Barry actually did it.The book, first published in 1999, was successful enough that he came out with this second edition three years later, adding some new jokes and tweaking others to fit them more readily into the new cultural environment (post-Y2K, a new Presidential administration, etc.).The preface says this book is 15% larger than the first edition and that 70% of the material is either new or has been updated. Thus, for those who enjoyed the first edition, there is certainly good reason to buy the second edition.Discounting superfluous pages at the front and back, we're talking about 100 pages of jokes here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jokes, puns, one-liners, haikus, and observational humor
Having edited more than fifty computer technology books (and authoring four of them himself), as well as writing numerous articles on the personal computer industry, who knew that Tim Barry's gift for computer humor would prove as keen as his expertise with Microsoft technology and products! The Totally Unauthorized Microsoft Joke Book is a 112 page compendium of jokes, puns, one-liners, haikus, and observational humor that will tickle the funny bone of anyone who has ever sat down to a computer keyboard. Don't miss Barry's "Windows Glossary" with more than two hundred terms "defined". There's even a chapter offering "101 Light Bulb Jokes"!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend to the techno-literate.
Fun and funny book. My copy is already dog-eared from it's trek through our I.T. department. The tech support guys howled at the Top Ten lists. The Microsoft interview yarn on pgs 14-15 cracked me up. (Close to the truth,to those of you who haven't been through the drill.) Read more

Editorial Review

Warning: If you aren't a true-blue geek, you won't even have a clue as to why this cracked glossary of computing terms is supposed to be funny. But if you're capable of finding humor in jokes about OO programming, TCP/IP, Bjarne Stroustrup, and operating system kernels, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Geeks Who Love to Laugh
This little bit of whimsy is a lot of fun. It's a fun book to keep on the shelf for those times you're too frustrated to go on coding and you need just a bit of comic relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool
The guy who slagged this book off is talking out of his bottom. This book is brill, we all love it over here and Stan Kelly Bootle is a dude!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately NOT a waste of money! Very funny!
I read The Devil's DP Dictionary in 1981 when it was first published and absolutely loved it. (I'm a computer nerd so that's to be expected.) Since then that book has gotten a bit dated and I've been waiting forKelly-Bootle to update it. Let me say that The Computer Contradictionary iseverything that I hoped it would be and more. I must also strongly disagreewith the customer reviewer who stated "Don't waste your money".I've read the Jargon File (a.k.a. The New Hacker's Dictionary) and while Irate it as highly as the book in question I must say that one really cannotcompare the two. The Jargon File, while extremely funny, is a realdictionary with real definitions of hacker jargon. The ComputerContradictionary on the other hand is not intended to give real definitionsat all. It exists simply to make us laugh through satire, irony, andKelly-Bootle's irreverent wit. In fact it's required that one already knowthe definitions of the words he "defines" or they wouldn't befunny. This was also the requirement of the work that Kelly-Bootle paidhomage to in this, and his first book, namely The Devil's Dictionary byAmbrose Bierce. ... Read more
