Thos book provides clear-cut examples, syntax, and the results of the various SQL commands that are most likely to be needed byany programmer. All the basics from simple SELECT statements are coveredall the way up to ORDER BY clauses, joins and so on. A special chapter onusing SPUFI was also a big help. The emphasis here is on the COBOL languageand mainframe computers, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone. The book teaches by example and can be finished easily within a week (Theexample programs are what make it look so big). A must-read for anyoneinterested in relationall databases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to advance your DB2/SQL skills?A "MUST HAVE"!
Buy this book!!! Some computer books are written by computer geeks who know 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice. You get MORE than your money's worth!
Buy this book!!!Some computer books are written by computer geeks who know their technical stuff cold. They can't teach worth a darn, but they are deep technical wizards highly versed in techno-babble.The people who wrote the Murach series are NOT (let me repeat, the Murach folks are NOT) such people. It was the most amazing experience to have read this book, and to have the feeling that either Curtis Garvin or Anne Prince were looking directly over one's shoulder anticipating the various questions that inevitably arose. This book is incredibly well structured. It is written clearly, concisely, and with relevant in-depth examples. The authors take pains to ensure that they present their programming examples without (WITHOUT!!!) falling into the trap of disjointed techno-babble so common to such books.Again, you get more than your money's worth with this book.Buy it, and recommend it to anyone else who wants to learn or refresh their DB2/COBOL skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars It would be a MUCH better book with a different title
While this work may be "The Official Guide" it is a long way from complete or authoratative. It is much more of an overview than a guide. It is an excleent overview or enhancements book for readers with a technical background.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great TECHNICAL review of DB2 UDB V8
This is a great book for what I do. I needed to keep on top of the new features in DB2 -- though for the wrong reasons (we are an Oracle business partner), I def'ly got to see all the new features with deep technical explanations and even examples; pretty neat stuff from IBM I must say. I looked at the What's New Guide that was referenced in other comments before buying this book, hoping to save a buck. Too bad they don't have a review forum for that book, horrible. All marketing fluff. Don't bother trying to find it -- it will only make you mad. Buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars DB2(R) SQL PL: Essential Guide for DB2(R) UDB on Linux(TM), UNIX(R), Windows(TM), i5/OS(TM), and z/OS(R) (2nd Edition
Has been extremely helpful. Good information

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book on DB2 SQL PL
I didn't know anything about writing DB2 stored procedures until I bought this book. After reading it I have written several procedures to aid in data migration. It is well laid out and has all the necessary information. The best part is that you don't feel like you are reading a technical book.

4-0 out of 5 stars embed yourself in db2
The book describes IBM's Procedural Language, which runs on their db2 servers. It is not a general purpose language, like C or Java. Rather, it is tied directly to db2 and IBM's implementation of SQL. But within this context, the book explains the expressive power of PL. It shows at length how you can write stored procedures, triggers and functions in PL. The level of detail and the cited examples should reassure you of PL's capability.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book
When I first started with DB2, this book was recommended to me by someone who read the v7.2 book by the same authors. This was the most confusing techie book I have ever read.Amongst all the typos, my biggest gripe is the index. You may as well rip the index out of the book because it is useless. There hasn't been one time where I wanted to look something up, referring to the index, and found what I was looking for.Its like a 900 page book with a 7 page index... useless.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT a good book
So it claims that Chapter 1-8 covers the objectives for Exam 700. It should have said - and MORE, SO MUCH MORE. Which borders on garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lo que necesitas para certificarte/What you need to get certified
Realmente estoy muy complacido con este libro, el cual me ha servido para prepararme y poder certificarme, lo recomiendo ampliamente.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Mainframe DB2
I should have done my homework before i bought this book. If you are using db2 on the mainframe im not sure you will find this book too helpful as it caters to windows and linux users. Im very new to db2 and did not find this book that helpful as far as laying down the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars DB2 Simplified
I found this book extremely comprehensive. The use of screen captures in partnership with textual descriptions are so much better.Bravo to those who took the time to create a fantastic learning and reference tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book lives up to its name
This book has something for every level of DB2 expertise from beginner to intermediate to expert. The books name implied there would be lots of visual images and the books was loaded with charts, pictures and screenshots. These make learning about DB2 much easier and more fun, than reading plain text. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick,, Handy Reference for a former DB2 for z/OS DBA
If you are coming from mainframe DB2, this is the book for you. Phil Gunning does a great job of explaining the many parameters and settings that make up DB2 UDB. Explanations are clear and straight to the point. It helped me to understand the DB2 UDB architecture and to get up to speed quick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tips from A DB2 Veteran
This book has helped my get started on monitoring and tuning my databases. Coming from Sybase, I had no idea where to start. I picked up this book and it guided me through all the monitoring setups and provided a monitoring and tuning methodology -- along with recommendations. This stays on my desk and is very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind
This book is really well organized. The section on logical and physical design was a good review for me. It reminded me how important a good design is to a successful database implementation. The SQL Tuning, Buffer pool tuning, and DB and DBM CFG tuning chapters have helped me take care of my problem databases and suboptimal SQL. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
Very disappointed with the book, returned it within a week. Written in a rambling and scatter-brained manner, gives no clear details of database creation or errors regarding db2X commands. May be useful for advanced users but Oracle DBA's wanting a quick insight into DB2 database creation and administration, stay away. Goes into other aspects of DB2 very well, but pointless if you are not taught how to create/troubleshoot the damned database in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginners
I bought this book when I started out in DB2.It's interesting, humorous style made for easy-reading and I covered most of the book within 2 weeks. This book is not a reference text or a thorough description of the more advanced areas of DB2, but covers the entry level to intermediate levels brilliantly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good rewrite of basics, advanced stuff not complete
As an experienced DBA and DB developer in just about every major DB product except DB2, I was disappointed that there is no book on the market explaining "in DB2, feature A works like this; feature B goes like that; feature C is entirely unique, etc. etc."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical quick introduction
A very practical and focused book, that can quickly get you up and running with the basics of using dB2. There are two roles described here. One is that of the Database Administrator. You'd be the person to act as sysadmin of a dB2 database. Doing the install and later creating users with various privileges, and in general keeping an eye on things. Corresponds exactly to being sysadmin of a computer. 1-0 out of 5 stars DBAs aren't made in 21 days
...and certainly not by the tame treatment of DB2 database administration found in this tome. *Not* worth the money or time to read it....competing titles are much better to assist in learning DB administration.

Besides getting you ready for the certification examination this book is an excellent reference source and covers some material far better than other similar books on the market. If you only want to buy a few books on this subject, start with this one. You may find you don't need any others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book but Nearly Obsolete!
This is a title that's desperately needed, but it's November 2005 and DB2 is bordering on version 8.3 or 9.1 already. Where's the update? I know, I know. People say 8.2 isn't THAT different. I disagree, especially if I'm going to shell out $30 shipped.

I truly got my money's worth from this book...I passed 2 exams based on this book's study guides and practice tests.Especially wonderful tips are included for areas they like to pose 'trick' questions on to make sure you know the difference between ORDER by and GROUP by, for example. Those tips were right on the money. It made it easy for me to refresh my skills and very confortable with what the tests were like, so that did not add to my nervousness. It is true they don't have the most up-to-date information....they should keep it up and come up with the new version 8 features, and a book for the Advanced tests. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good Intro to DB2
If you aren't a database expert and you want to learn DB2, this book will do it.After using this book, you will be able to use DB2 very effectively. The authors did a great job.3-0 out of 5 stars Horrible customer service at publisher of the Dummies books
The book itself might be fine. I don't really know yet as I've been waiting for TWO WEEKS to get a replacement CD for the defective one that came with the book. The problem with the CD is that once you uploaded DB2 from it, you couldn't actually USE DB2 because you get a 'license has expired' message whenever you try to create or DO anything with the software. An error that could have been caught if ANY Quality Assurance had been performed. I called the 800 number they give you in the back of the book (800-762-2974) and got the 'Wiley Customer Care Center'. Red flag goes up. The guy on the phone was responsive, no problem, they'll send out another CD. But "Oh yeah, I think they fixed that problem"? One would HOPE so you know? 8 days later I get an invoice in the mail confirming that I've ordered the CD. They say to allow 7 business days for it to arrive. On the 8th business day, I phone back. "It was sent on the 7th (the day after my initial phone call), give it another couple of days." I gave it another couple of days. No CD. I phone back. My third call. "We don't have that CD in stock." They couldn't tell me this TWO WEEKS before? The lesson here? DON'T BUY THIS BOOK NEW. Buy it with a CD that has already been used. Or, if you buy ANY 'for Dummies' book new (that comes with a CD), phone 800-762-2974 to find out if there are any 'problems' with the CD FIRST. They found a CD lying around for my copy of 'DB2 for Windows for Dummies' but they "couldn't" overnite out to me. I have to wait another 7 business days for them to send it out by hitchhiker.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good quick reference!
I admit it, I am biased. I know Lily so take my review with agrain of salt ;-). However, I am a DB2 for UDB application developer/tester , and I love this small light weight book . It is a good summary and lets you know where to go for more info. ... Read more

Must have book , excellent !5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is GREAT!!!
Our company uses this book as the DB2 reference bible! We recently had a DB2 failure and could not find reference to the problem in any DB2 manual. We found the answer to our problem in this book - saving us several thousands of dollars and many hours of downtime. Everyone has a copy on their desk and uses it for everyday activities for all DB2 platforms.

It is not for you, if you are not using DB2 on OS/390 and you are not an absolute novice to the Database world. It talks only about the IBM Mainframe, does not cover UNIX, NT and OS/2 well. Does not cover any topic in substantial details. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of DB2 high availability features
Having seen Chris talk at several IDUG events, I knew he had a deep knowledge of DB2 and its high availability features. This book highlights that knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars A lot more to dB2 than just standard SQL
If you have been a sysadmin and are familiar with the concepts of full and incremental backups of an operating system, then this book's descriptions of dB2's abilities in this field are very impressive. dB2 offers far more fine grained control/resolution over the backing up of its data. Like the means of having circular or archival logging. So if you are just starting out as a dB2 administrator, you have quite a bit more to learn, just in this field.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have !
I wish I had this book as soon as it was published. After programming on the S/38 and the AS/400 (in RPG) for over 14 years now (with some interruptions), I consider this one the best AS/400-related computing bookI have purchased - ever! And compared to other computer books, well, ifonly that kind of quality would be available on other topics as well morefrequently, either DBMS's or programming languages. The book saved one ofmy clients hours of work: with no previous SQL knowledge but having thisbook they were able to do some work with SQL that otherwise would haverequired them to write a program. Another client (and myself for my ownsystem) took advantage of the chapters on Referential Integrity. If you'reserious about accessing your data on your DB2/400 database, you owe it toyourself to buy this book !

5-0 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore!
It has become my daily Bible in my job as an AS/400 DBA.Even after reading the whole book last winter, I still seem to read a passage from it everytime I need inspiration on doing something new or different (or that Ican't remember how it is done) with DB2/400.5-0 out of 5 stars If you program the AS/400, you need this book!
Having programmed the AS/400 since its inception, I thought I knew everything about the DB2/400 database. But Conte's insightful volume reveals new possibilities and capabilities. Read more
