2-0 out of 5 stars 350 pages of useful info, 500 pages of crap
This book will prepare you for the exam, but what a waste of time reading.I was so incredibly sick of his tree-hugging "wit" I have done MCSE, Citrix CCA, Cisco CCNA, Compaq ASE courses and exams and never seen a book where an author needs to put his beliefs or humor in the book.Get to the point and get there quickly.Alright, my wife thinks I am being too negative.Do you get prepared for the test absolutely.Did I learn a lot about Netware 5 absolutely.Did I pass the test easily, yes again.I just didn't appreciate the writer's style of presenting the material. Also, why doesn't Novell give you an evaluation copy of Netware with this kit?If they want you to learn this stuff then experience is the best way.(I didn't buy a Compaq server to sit around and collect dust)!!!!Please Novell, DO NOT allow this moron to write for you.Hire a professional writer and allow Mr. Clarke to write the great American novel "My trip through Woodstock:The stories of a 60's tree hugger living in the 21st century"

4-0 out of 5 stars so you want to be CNA ?
This is a nice book its good and covers alot of subjects. I passed CNA today using this book. However remember that this book alone is not enough if you havent worked with novell before.1-0 out of 5 stars 90% crap, 10% useful
Simply the worst exam preparation book I've ever come across. What little useful info Mr. Clark presents could be condensed into 1/10 as many pages. This is a huge, irritating tome which will leave you wondering how Novell corporation could give their blessing to such a waste of paper. How many of your precious innocent trees were sacrificed for this monstrosity Mr. Clark?Seriously, don't waste your money, more importantly your time, on this book. Humour can indeed aid the learning process but there is such a thing as brevity (besides, none of Clark's drivel is at all funny or clever). This is one of those cases where less is more. Save yourself the shame you will inevitably feel after buying this book and realizing you've been had. How many budding Novell professionals have been stymied by this giant slap-in-the-face book? Seriously folks, it is your duty to our IT profession not to support such garbage. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
Being a professional C++ programmer with a background in Applied Math I didn't like this book at all. It's written in a very annoying way: sometimes it sounds like its author is trying to sell the whole concept of NN and Fuzzy Logic to the reader instead of explaining how, when, and WHY fuzzy logic and neural networks work, how to train them properly, and what their limitations are. One characteristic example: author presents a list of companies using fuzzy logic in real systems but never gives any useful details about these systems. 2-0 out of 5 stars Big promises but no delivery
At first this book promises to offer a great deal for the reader, and the copious amounts of code therein support this impression. But once one actually begins working with the text, the book's shortcomings become all too apparent.5-0 out of 5 stars Good book

Editorial Review

Few technologies will do more to boost small-business efficiency than a local-area network (LAN), which enables an organization's computer users to pool and share information easily and to communicate inside and outside the company. This book approaches networking from the point of view of an owner of a small business whose employees have been using computers for some time. The owner suspects that a LAN would make things easier but doesn't have the technical knowledge to build one or the money to hire a network consultant to do the job. After reading this book, such a small-business owner will know what decisions he or she needs to make (about network protocols, for example), what needs to be purchased, and how everything gets put together.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite for Dummies and getting a little old
I'm perhaps too much of a dummy for this book, but even I realized that the '98 edition seems somewhat outdated in the networking game.Still, it did help reinforce some concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars Right on Target
This book is perfect for both novice and experienced user alike! It's content is "Right on Target" for small companies getting into this important area!I found it extreemly informative!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb introduction for intelligent laypersons
I'm a small business owner and I had pretty much given up on understandingnetworking until someone recommended this book. In a nutshell, if you'renot a PC expert but you're smart and you need to set up a network for youroffice, buy this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
What else can I say? If you complete this book, you will pass your A+ Certification. This book is money well spent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it is printed on.
The information in this book is worse than incomplete. The practice questions in the book and on the CD are nothing like those on the EXAM. There are many practice questions that are poorly worded, and have WRONG answers. There are also many questions with TYPO's. Example there was a question comparing DIMMS and RIMMS, but all the the answers referenced SIMMS. Stay away from this please!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Passed my A+ because of this book!
I had taken the hardware exam and failed it the first time around. Then a friend gave me the Mike Meyers' Passport book and this one. He highly recommended Passport but after reading the first chapter I was bored to tears. After reading this book, the only thing I had to complain about were the bad jokes. The presentation of the information is solid, and he takes his time explaining things. He also puts in bullet points for what you should concentrate on when studying. After reading this book 1 time from cover to cover I took the hardware again and passed it, and passed the software on the first try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Reliable
This is the perfect companion to Alan Carter's NT4 MCSE Study Guide. If you're studying for the NetEss exam, you should give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good but use the Exam cram book also ISBN 1576101924
I recommend this book I used it along with the Exam Cram book the two complete each other. You might be able to pass with this book alone but why waste the 100 dollars if you don't.The goal of any test should be to passon the first try. This book and the exam cram ISBN # 1-57610-192-4 willhelp you meet that goal.I recommend this book and give it the 5 star sealof approval.I passed this test on the first try with an 833 and I am aMCP. As with most of these study guides it helps to use more than one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the reference you need to pass 70-58
You only need three things to pass the Networking Essentials exam; This book, the Transcenders practice exams, and the desire to do it.With them you've got it made.I passed on my first try with no problem, and I had noprevious networking experience at all. I read the Exam Cram TCP/IP andfailed Transcenders exams miserably.I read this book and passed themfirst time.IF YOU CAN PASS THE TRANSCENDERS PRACTICE EXAMS YOU CAN PASSTHE MICROSOFT EXAMS. 2-0 out of 5 stars Good volume, little substance
Good volume but very little substance. The author's description are too esoteric and laced with lots of errors. The editorial team did very little in terms of proofreading and correcting typos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
Although I'm not yet done reading the book, it seems terrible to me. I'm not really sure how much of what is presented in the book (and in which detail) is required for the exams, but I do know that as one who has someCOM background, I am having a hard time following the author. As was saidin other reviews - the material is visually presented in a very poor way.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for content, none for clarity of example
Something as complex as COM technology requires diagrams that show every step, from client call through each interface request, instantiation and moniker bind. This book has one picture with a phalanx of arrows andcircles , where several diagrams are required. His mostly textualexplanations leave out steps that were explained in previous chapters, butagain, explained just as poorly.I have no complaints of excess materialin the book. It's always good to have more than you need, and I can'tagree with those who want a list of test answers. But I've written enoughinstructional material to know that people have three prime learningchannels - text-audio (hearing & reading), visual (diagrams) andkinesthetic (step-through, actually doing).Prendergast only deals withthe first of these three well, the second almost not at all, and in the CDexamples, the third very sparingly.COM code examples should have been inVC++, where the COM technology is actually built from start to finish.VBcode is worthless for that subject.Don't let the MS bashing put you off -he's only being honest. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Get Started
I've often thought that computer books tend to leave out the first forty pages or so that tell you the broad picture of just what it is that you are trying to do. This book is the antidote to boring or overwhelming text books. In actuality, you need to learn and memorize the same facts and figures but the author's style makes it much less of a chore. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Neural Networks Introduction [1993]
Despite being used for decades controlling safety/time-critical non-linear manufacturing processes (and other applications), the neural networks/AI label evokes images from science fiction by the general media. Beyond theinitially intimidating title, this book is of real use to researchersaddressing complex problems, and those trying to use neural networks.Without resorting to hardwired neural networks, or MATLAB with neuralnetworks toolbox, one can readily understand and use the included (datednow) C++ neural network code (C compiler excluded- but useBorland/Microsoft).
