Not for Informix Administrators
I bought this book hoping it would help me administer Informix. It is primarily geared more toward the person looking to learn SQL syntax and apply it to Informix, with a side-bar focus to the DB Admin.The book is not bad for what it covers, I just thought (hoped) it would be geared more to the DB Admin.

Good starting point.
I have to confess that I found out a lot of this information the hard way. I played with existing programs and databases. What make this book so good is that it tells me what it is that I have been doing and what I missed. I do have to weed out what I can use as I am using SE not online. The CD is almost exclusive online. Basic and Excellent !
This book covers the most important subjectsand certainly gives to the beginner a good guide to do the job. The author was very inspired andhas a good sense of humor, so enjoy it ! ... Read more

Definetely this is the Informix DBA Survival Guide !
If you want to be out in one of those 3 a.m. emergencies this book is helpful. The text is veryobjective and goes directly to the DBA needs.

Probably the most readable of all the informix manuals. A tutorial on SQL, gives you a quick start on developing any database. It provides a good overview on all the concepts related to Informix, though you may need toget precise behaviour from reference manuals ! ... Read more

Well worth the time it takes to read it
I'm primarily a developer, but I also do a little bit of DBA stuff. This book has lots of info for developers, and apparently lots for DBAs too -- it's the book our primary DBA recommended to me. If you need to knowsomething about Informix, chances are it's explained in this book.

Informix unleashed never should have be released
If you have had experience with other relational databases. i.e. SQL Server, Sybase.You may be farmiliar with Unleashed books.This one is nothing like them.The enire books gives a general overview of Informixand 90% of the book covers the Informix-4GLThere is little to no examplesfor SQL and was not worth the $40.00 I spent on it.

Little "business" in this book
The word "boring" comes to mind when trying to describe this book.It is obvious that much of it is filler material with very little "business" oriented material.It's not necessary to know any level of details about specific products like "4GL," etc. to explain the business view of what happened.

White Pride
This is an interesting, if sterile, dissection of the rise and fall of one-time Silicon Valley darling Informix and their charismatic CEO, Phil White.Author Steve Martin was an Informix employee in the critical years from 1991 through 1997, and therefore speaks with the authority and insider's knowledge not found in the perspective of an outside journalist, burdened by the baggage of an interviewee's selective recall.Martin couples with the history a series of business lessons, which, while not profound, provide a succinct primer of management basics that are broadly applicable.Not the least of these lessons is the danger in allowing personal rivalries to cloud sound business judgment.In the case of Informix, an irrational focus on beating Oracle and it's obnoxious CEO, Larry Ellison, could be traced to Informix's eventual demise. While Martin is admittedly a Phil White sympathizer, he is not an apologist, and does a good job of presenting the other side of the story that was so negatively twisted by a scandal-crazed press and a US Justice Department which, in the days of Enron and WorldCom, was chomping at the bit to get a major CEO in handcuffs doing the perp walk wearing stripes.Even the most cynical critic of Informix and White must concede that the offense that ultimately sunk the Informix ship was disproportional to the consequences delivered by Judge Breyer.

A really good reference bookthis look is a really good one.
This is a really good look and issuitable for both the novice and expert. There should have been more coverage of topics onHA & Replication. Also it is sad thatit does not cover the latest releases. As this is out of publication, I paida bit more than original price for aused look, but it was worth its weight in gold. The reseller from Ohio promptly sentme the book and answered my calls. Book arrived in new and good Condition. The book's website has been neglected. It needs some attention. Visited the InformiX users group for infoand latest trial software after talkingto the author, when I found that theCD needed keys. In the end everything wasavailable at www.iiug.org and I hada pleasant experience using the book.
A true handbook
This book is awesome, I just wish more topics including replication, more detailed troubleshooting techniques, and finally a good DBA practices/methods section.I now have two books, one for work and one for home.It is constantly open on my desk (both places).The sections on privileges and optimizing indexes have been my favorites due to the easy layout.Each section presented the infomation in clear and concise ways, allowing for quick implementation. Since I'm new to Informix, I was forever looking for a book that would help me get a better understanding on how to support Informix databases. The Informix user manuals were very unorganized make it very difficult to get the answers I needed. This book is well organized, making it easy to locate the needed information. Excellent Source for 4GL Development
This is an excellent reference for anyone who is involved with Informix 4GL development. The book provides all the basics of SQL and 4GL. I often use it from time to time for my development projects.

Has all essential information you'll need to code datablades
This book explains all the essential concepts involved in Informix datablade programming.It assumes that the reader is competent in C and SQL. It also assumes an understanding of operating system concepts such asthreads and process control. The text moves quickly through the subjectmatter and it is not an easy read.It has a high information density andseveral chapters and sections must be studied, not just read. I foundseveral spelling and grammar errors that are evidence that the book waspoorly proof-read.There were, however, no errors serious enough toobfuscate the author's intent.Read more

If you read the "ReadMe" file that accompanies the disk, you will see directions to the Informix site where you will get the license to install the engine software.

basic information
This book does not contain as much detail as I would have expected from such a highly rated text.While it is informative, as a resource it is not terribly useful.There is little detail packed into the scant 163 pagesoffered here.Overpriced.

Extremely Clear and Useful
As an Informix novice, I've learned a great deal by plowing through the official documentation, but Suto's book really allowed me to leap forward by putting things in context and giving clear rules of thumb for a varietyof configuration and performance issues.I've also written technicaldocumentation in another field, and boy howdy, this is a good job ofwriting -- it's really a pleasure to read.

Outline only, shallow depth, no detail.
This book shows how to make, load, save and run the simplest of stored procedures. It does not give good reference to the Stored Procedure Language, program control statements, cursors in stored procedures, andstatements that will not work in stored procedures that do work inISQL/4GL. The book is also lacking in real-world examples.

Not worth the $44.00.
The chapters of this book are somewhat informative if you are new to Informix.HOWEVER the price of this book should be more like $15.00 since it only contains about 150 pages.

Introductory text - too short
The latter half of the book is a copy of the SPL syntax from the Informix documentation. If you don't have access to a copy of the Syntax Documentation Volume 2 from Informix, this can be very useful data.However this only leaves about 90 pages of text to the book, probably not worth the $41 price. Overall I found the book to be fairly basic.There were no outright errors that I noted in the book, but it did not have the depth of discussion I was expecting.This is especially true if you compare it with books in similiar subject matter like O'Reilly's "Oracle PL/SQL Programming." ...
