You've probably read everyone's glowing reviews, so I'll get to the point.Although I found the book EXTREMELY useful (I use it so much, the pages are coming apart), but it has two serious flaws:3-0 out of 5 stars Online Help in a Book: THAT'S ALL, REALLY
If you go to the online help for Visual Studio and select the VID view, you get the same info that's in this book. That's not all bad. I like the linear presentation and organization real-view of the book. I purchasedAmundsen's _Using VID 6_ as a first book and missed the useful cataloguetype listing of ALL objects, methods and properties. In the help files youhave the hotlinks, that's about the only difference. Be forewarned, evenwith a User's Manual & Programmer's Ref, VID does not give sufficientexamples for the novice or even an intermediate programmer. Pretty bigintuitive leaps are needed to arrive at what seems a simple logical step. The VID Web Ref helps by providing a linear view of multi-dimensionalhypervolume. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is a fine introduction to programming for the Internet the Microsoft way, using Active Server Pages (ASPs) and the Web-development tool Visual InterDev 6. The author covers the fundamentals of creating dynamic, database-driven Web pages that can serve as the starting point for any commercial Web site. Early sections look at the new Visual InterDev design environment, which features improved RAD (rapid application development)-tool functionality and database support. Lessons explore the basics of creating InterDev projects.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dazed and confused
There's very little to recommend about this book. Most chapters are filled with superfluous verbiage and far fewer hands on exercises than I expected. Some of the chapters are redundant, as if the author forgot that he already covered this ground in an earlier chapter. There is no sensible progression to the book. Concepts and techniques seem to come out of left field with no explanation of the fundamentals of what's going on. You get some exposure to the VI interface and some familiarity with the construction of a site and programming elements, but a poor explanation of underlying concepts. I found bugs in some of the code samples, and few of the more advanced examples worked. Unfortunately, the chapter on debugging comes toward the end of the book. Don't bother with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
Some sample codes don't match what the authors have written in the book. A lot of erros in the codes. For example, in Day 13, the Authors even wrote a VBScript code like 'Dim I as integer' which is supported in VB only, not in VBScript. I doubt if the authors really tested some of the codes.3-0 out of 5 stars great book to start with

1-0 out of 5 stars Sub Beginner Level
This book is not worth buying and, if you have any web design experience, not worth reading. It deals with very surface level concepts. It lacks the explination of what is accually happening underneath the WYSIWYG interface.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
The good reviews here on Amazon helped me make this book my choice.Sorry to say it hasn't gone so well. The first few chapters are ok (I learned a lot), and the writing style is fine for me, but the errors make it frustrating to use.I started by writing down the errors that leave you wondering "Did I do something wrong, or is this another error in the text?", and stopped after 8th one.I don't think the best way to learn is to constantly correct errors in your textbook. The last straw for me was the database chapters. The book does not come with a CD-ROM with the examples..The database chapters reference sample databases to learn by, but without the sample databases from the website, the chapters are very difficult to learn anything from. I'm cutting my losses, and beginning my search for another Interdev book.I recommend you learn from my experience and don't repeat my [mistake].

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad... but not enough.
This book will serve it's purpose well for the beginner, it touches some very important and interesting issues that were covered in other books, and the author uses that claim in far too many subjects, in my opinion. Itfeatures a lot of text that involves the very important issues of usingInterDev, but what about the technologies that make it all work?ASP,VBScript, SQL, ADO, HTML are all beeing discussed, but in a manner to makeyou ask for more... much more. It's a good book to play a first step, butif controlling InterDev isn't your problem... you'll need another book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars handy
Indeed, this is not the right book for programming with Interdev 6.0. However, I always kept it on my desk as a quick guide to the Interdev IDE. In this context I find it useful. 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your cash - you have this book already.
This book is a paperback version - word for word - of the on-line documentation for VID6.They've just removed the active links that make the on-line stuff reasonably useful. That's why most reviewers found it too condensed - the internal links are gone. So if you own InterDev, you have this book already. If you don't, why do you want to buy a book on it? I'm new to InterDev, and could use a good book to help me out - I find the interface confusing at best. But this book is certainly not the one I need.Fortunately, the guy in the next cube knows his way around...

4-0 out of 5 stars Very concise, you need to have some knowledge about ASP
I spent almost a whole afternoon trying to find a good book on InterDev.Not much luck, but thisone really caught my eyes. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The examples confused me
I bought Visual Interdev 6 for Dummies because I wanted a quick tutorialaimed at someone with no previous exposure to Interdev.I was looking forsomething that would walk me through all aspects of the program in a waythat was easy to understand.Unfortunately, this book didn't meet myexpectations at all.The first few chapters gave an adequate overview ofthe layout of the various windows, menu bars, etc., but as soon as the bookprogressed into work samples I started feeling lost. The progression ofthe sections didn't seem to flow together in a logical way, and thepractice scripts and projects were sometimes poorly explained.By the timeI reached Chapter 10 or so I was feeling like a total imbecile for notunderstanding the examples.I finally gave up on it and bought PracticalVisual InterDev 6 by Michael Amundsen, which has exactly what Iwanted--clear, concise, step-by-step examples.I breezed through the wholebook and now feel like an Interdev pro!And I wish I had never boughtVisual Interdev for 6 for Dummies...it was a waste of my money and time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I own several VID 6 books and this one answered many questions the others didn't.It was easy to understand and I would highly recommend to anyone. The book doesn't cover everything; however, it covers the most common toolsyou need to get the job done.Wonderful book!

1-0 out of 5 stars If you learn by doing, this book is not for you.
I like books that teach by working through a sample project. The best of these types of books will give you the basic aspects of programming to get you up and running. This book is bits and pieces of Visual Interdev, butjust when you think you're off and running it stops short, which is my takeon the whole book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD
This is the best Visual Interdev 6 tutorial I have found. I had no problems using the web site or locating the code online, so I am not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about.3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but still leaves questions
I bought this book to be able to handle an upcoming project, and immediately began reading it. The first 14 chapters or so were extremely easy to understand. When it came to the databases, that's where I began to develop questions. The database coverage is less than I had hoped for, since that's the reason I bought the book. The examples didn't work as they were supposed to. But with some ingenuity I believe that they can be made to work. 4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Visual InterDev 6
In a nutshell, if you are new to VID and need a step-by-step tutorial, then this book is definitely for you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book yet on VID6
Nothing earth shattering to say in this review. VID Unleashed is the best book I have read on VID6--hands down. Competent chapters on the scripting object model, the VID data environment, and the database and query designers. Several hundred pages of good reference material on the SOM, HTML, DHTML, ADO, etc. Good stuff. 1-0 out of 5 stars Another Sams faux pas
Errors and errors and more errors. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Start, but lots of errors
This was a good book as an introduction to developing ASP with VI. I had come from a "code everything by hand" approach and VI unleashed has given me a great introduction to the visual developement capabilitiesof InterDev 6. However, the major drawbacks are Chapter 23 and 24. I learnbest by doing and while the steps in creating the example online cataloghelped me to learn how to use DTCs, etc in the end the examples did notwork. Examples that don't work are very frustrating. I want to see theprogram I did in the examples work, not chase down bugs. Also adding to myfrustration is that there are no online resources where fixes and updatesto the text exist. All in all though, the book presented the material welland helped me get a good grasp of VI6. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Bad Habits is a Bad Idea
This book may be fine for producing working web-pages, but it's pretty awful in these days of cross-browser applications.4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good for beginners
I am a new web developer I do not have much web development experience and I find this book a very good starting book that takes you from ground up in a fast and easy manner.Although it does not cover the more advanced issues however this is very clear form the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Web Development with Visual Interdev 6
It is a good book specially for a beginner like myself. What makes it a good book, is it is slow paced and explains well throughout. The only thing I didn't like about it, was in chapter 5 when you get to Database stuff it showed you how to do it using SQL Server 7 which is a very expensive piece of software in which not very many home use users have. It is more for a business. Most people like myself would like to hook a Database up on a website using Microsoft Access.Read more

If you'd said a couple of years ago that someone would develop a WYSIWYG design environment for the Web, people would have thought you were crazy. 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time & Money
Like the other reviews, the book skips around too much. Hard to follow. Even some of the example source code would not compile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unstructured, Confusing, Very, Very Confusing
While I appreciated the fact that Ian didn't start out with VI 101, as I read through the subsequent chapters I am discovering that I am getting more and more confused. 1-0 out of 5 stars A poor Wrox book
This book is a disappointment. I am a reasonably proficient ASP programmer that so far have used TextPad, and have written forms, DB-connection strings etc by hand. I enjoyed the "ASP Pro 2.0", "BeginningASP databases" and "Techniques for webmasters" and thoughtthat all books from Wrox were good. So I bought this book to learn thebenefits of InterDev (I considered the "beginners" InterDev book, but it looked too easy), since no manual comes with the InterDevsoftware.Read more

I got this book thinking it would be a great start on ASP programing with Visual Interdev.3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly put together
It seems that the authors were asleep during the making of this book. This book suffers from poorly put together content: diagrams, layout, lack of files on the cd, and explanations. The first thing that was annoying was on page 15, on the bottom, that says if you need help on setting up the Frontpage98 Server Extension... refer to appendix B. Guess what folks, there is nothing mentioned there. I had to rummage through the internet and the Microsoft site to find any support. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the worst book out there.
This is a decent book for anyone who knows very little about interdev.I liked the step-by-step tutorials, but they can get frustrating quickly. It's a good intro book, but halfway through it, you'll be looking for something better.2-0 out of 5 stars Too browser specific
When I started this book it looked pretty good, but by the middle I found that it was only creating pages that would work on IE and even that was a chore. I need to design pages that fit a wide variety of browsers, and thisbook does not nearly fit the bill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Makes good kindling
Its always frustrating to spend 25 dollars on a book that claims to teach something and doesn't follow through. That is the case with this book. Nothing here I couldn't have gotten surfing the web for free.Books that claim to be for idiots should be for people who are new to the subject, not for people stupid enough to waste their money on a book that doesn't follow through. I burned it along with some PILOT books fromt he 70's.

2-0 out of 5 stars Idoits guide written, for idiots by idiots.
If you are having trouble opening the box, taking out the cd-rom and setting up the software, then you might find some use for this book. If you are in need of developing anykind of database driven sites then your best bet is to look else where.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful At All
One would think that an "Idiot's" guide would be written for the newbie in the subject covered. Not this book. There are no step-by-step instructions for anything. It goes on and on at great length about the theory of web site development (in simplistic terms), and never really explains how to DO anything that Front Page or many other web page authoring tools can't do. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading
This book discusses a lot of mundane HTML stuff without even getting intothe guts of VI6. It is spattered with screen dumps, and snippets of codethat really don't teach you much.1-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Disappointing
This book is very very poorly written. It takes off decently well with good introductions into VBScript and Javascript and fades away rapidly. Sometimes you even get the feeling if the author really tested all hisexamples before writing them in the book. Very few (and some veryuninformative!) examples make it harder to sit with this book. It is moreof a very detailed contents page of Visual Interdev 6 in some internalMicrosoft-inhouse-marketing-tutorial specification. The statement 'Openthis book as a Novice and finish it as a pro' on the cover of the book isan entirely misleading statement. Without relying very heavily on otherbooks, most people will remain novices even after finishing this book. Apure waste of money and time. I have worked very diligently on it till Igot the feeling that the book and the author were trying to cash on novicesto the subjects. The author is NOT a master of Visual Interdev 6 as heclaims on the cover. The type of knowledge the author imparts in ASP andDatabases makes you wonder why they dont use this book in Kintergarden! Donot waste money on this book even if it is to savethe last man and womanon this planet. You are bound to feel cheated! Disgusting!

1-0 out of 5 stars Visual Interdev 6 -- From the Ground Down!
I had this book for a college class where we used Visual InterDev 6.I walked in the first day of the quarter with no knowledge of the program, and if the class had been based solely on this book I would have walked outwith no more than I went in with.Anytime I needed help while working on aWeb project in InterDev, I could never find the answers in here. This bookis so basic, I wonder how he got his Software Designer position that thecover says he has.For what it's worth, this book is not the one that youwant to buy when you want to LEARN about the program. If you wantsomething that will take up some empty space on your bookshelf, then goahead and get this.If you read it once, the bookshelf is probably whereit will stay. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better than people give it credit for
I took 70-152 today with a score of 938 (I'm a very experienced ASP developer with some Interdev knowledge), and I only used two sources for my studying - MeasureUP testing software and this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Available
If there were more books available, my rating would probably be a little different. However, I would say that this book was pretty good.I went through the entire book and obtained a pretty good overview of the material that would be on the exam.I believe that it was quite helpful to me and would be to others.I would recommend that you purchase Transcender practice exams (...) along with this purchase as they provide a real good view of what the test will be about.Good Luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not sufficient, but really necessary
I think that, in spite of the errors it contains (part of which are reported and corrected in Microsoft's site, included the unexplainable one of the Response.Buffer default), this book is a must reading in order to know the subjects of the exam.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Close but yet so far
The book has really good themes for web sites, but unfortunately it is not well put together.Missing lots of explanation in the examples given. The examples that I create do not match what is on CD.Things are missing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very very poor book
This book didn't help me at all. It contains a number of sample sites, including all the necessary code to get there. Unfortunately, this code is almost never explained. This whole book is for "imitating monkeys" who just enter the described code in their computer without understanding any logic behind. I recommend everybody who is interested in quickly learning the logic behind to buy the Visual InterDev book from Microsoft Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Applicability to Solve Real World Problems
Dan's book helps tackle some real world issues in the fast paced web application development field. His style is specific to the examples at hand but also general enought thatyou can use the techniques to solve other problems. This book deals with the practical issues that developers
