3-0 out of 5 stars History of HCIL???
I have met and attended many lectures by both Bens and believe they both have and still have many contributions to HCI. This book is not one of them, as I was suprised at the poor printing quality of this book. Many figures are unreadable, and make many references to the same project, (i.e. Spotfire)throughout many of the papers. The main reason for purchasing this book was to have one place to look for varied theories, methods or appliactions of information visualization. You may be better served by locating papers on this subject via the web and creating a collection of you own. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes this more complicated than it is....
I'm self-taught in a lot of different areas and have used a great many books of this type. The author needs to pare this down to the essentials before going into so many details. One problem is that she covers things like how to make DHTML effects before she covers something as essential as how to make a table of contents. She also tries to offer too much information in each page -- there are too many little "hint" boxes with information that you don't need to know yet.Larger graphics would be helpful, as I had trouble reading the text on many of them.

Looking through the TOC for this book, I was impressed at the extent towhich it covered the applications of RoboHelp. But, once I started usingthe book, I found myself spending progressively more time trying tounderstand what the author was saying. Read more

Editorial Review

Unix users like to write scripts--automated routines that perform tasks more quickly or efficiently than manual labor but are easier to write than full-fledged compiled programs. You can use scripts to automate many routine tasks, such as the process of creating hundreds of new user accounts. Two of the newest scripting languages are Tool Command Language and Tool Kit, most often referred to collectively as Tcl/Tk. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars don't even bother with this book
if provides a VERY general overview on creating a few buttons and using wish... Thats it. It can be used to show someone what tcl can do. ...In general, the technical books that are "For Dummies" ...[are no good].1-0 out of 5 stars This book is by Dummies, not for them!
I was highly disappointed by the quality of this book. This book is so full of bugs it should only be used for kindling (you might get your money's worth). Previously, I had wonderful experiences with 'Dummies'books, but this one is awful. I tested many of the examples and was forcedto edit many of them for the programs to work properly. Also, many of thefigures and screenshots are out of place -- or their captions are irelevantto them. One other complaint -- a big one -- I don't know if this happenedto all of the CDs, but mine didn't have close to everything that the bookadvertises! Speak of aggravating! The book will sometimes refer to anexample that is on the CD, but when you look for it, it's simply not there.Oh, by the way, I only gave this book a star because I was unable to submitthe review otherwise!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book couldn't be worse
This book is terrible. I picked it up on sale forat a local computer store, but it wasn't even worth that price. This book is like a cockroach infestation; the number of bugs is unbearable. Examples don't appear in the right places, and they appear with the wrong headings, as doscreenshots, etc... I'm not sure whoever proofread this one before it wentout, but they should be fired. Do yourself a huge favor and buy anotherTcl/Tk... this one is best avoided. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars outdated but good
this book is a pretty typical dummies guide.i haven't taken the test yet so i can't say much.it's outdated now but since the new versions of server+ preparation guides are not yet available this is probably as good a test preparation book as you can get.i used the dummies guide for a+ certification and it was okay.lots of overlap between the a+ guide and the server+ guide--good luck to you, and good luck to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an overhaul!
Best used as a starter or final prep but needs somthing more heavyweight for the exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Several content errors found.
I will also add that I emailed BOTH Ron Gilster AND the dummies press asking if any erratta was posted, and as of today, 2 months later, I have received NO REPLY from either party. This is most unfortunate considering that the book is well written, catchy, and makes a very dry subject a lot more interesting. So shame on the technical editors. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Everything vs. Nothing about User Interfaces
This book really makes me ambivalent. It is essentially a collection of colums on the subject of "Human Interface" written for Apple's developer news magazine. Thus the number of topics covered by the book is immense. In 38 (!) chapters (that is 6 pages per chapter in average) PeterBickford covers almost everything that has to do with interface design, ranging from database interface design, design of icons, the use of music, designing games, information systems, etc. etc. What makes me award thisbook three stars after all is the fact that it is a joy to read the book.It takes not more than a few hours to whizz through the pages which docontain several words of wizdom useful to everybody no matter their levelof experience. The use of small case stories throughout the book is niceand adds positively to the overall experience. If you want to start adialog with a user interface specialist (for whatever reason) this iscertainly a great book to get you started. The design and layout of thebook, is fairly dull and boring. There are only very few black and whiteillustrations which do not add much to the overall impression. Even thoughthat white space is important for increased readability, I think some ofthis space (20% of the book) should have been used for better and moreillustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interface Design For The Rest Of Us
All too often, books on interface design can be overly academic discussions of theoritcal design issues that are interesting only to other user interface designers.5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasurable text on human interface concepts
Like the topic it covers, this book has a friendly interface. Unlike most technical books, I found Bickford's text downright entertaining. For example, he uses the analogy of a good waiter in a fine restaurant to drivein the idea of transparent interface, and house-hunting to help designersunderstand how databases ought to work. Bickford is an excellent teacher -he knows how to make his subject appealing and accessible. (It figures --given appeal and accessibility are his criteria for good interface.)Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material presented in brief, compact manner
The stated purpose of the CodeNotes series of books is to get a developer up to speed on a particular technology or topic as fast as possible. This edition does a fairly good job of meeting this goal--it won't make you an expert in web-based user interface design, but after reading through its 200 pages, you'll know a lot more than someone with no experience in this area. The book does a very good job of introducing a concept and then jumping right into the areas which present typical implementation decisions/challenges for the developer. For example, the chapter on JavaScript gives a brief overview of the object-oriented constructs of the language, and then dives right into JavaScript's Regular Expressions syntax and its application in building client-side form validation handlers--one of the most typical uses of JavaScript. Likewise, the chapter on XML/XSLT moves quickly into templates, matching, flow control, and how to use this technology to build web pages which support all user agents. Other chapters similarly cover user interface design theory, DHTML, DOM and CSS.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't have much value for me
If you have some basic web skills, no formal training in design or development, and are looking for one small book to take you a little further in all aspects of web development, this book might be worth reading. However, I found it to be too basic to be of any use for me, but I have training both in design and development. It is also already feels a little dated. I would recommend a good book on CSS/DOM for DHTML, a good book on web usability, and as for design, well, that's a little harder...

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated for the web savvy
Although I thought Design Wise was easy to read, and did a wonderful job of summarizing the history of interface design, it fell well short of offering significant real world solutions. As a GUI designer, this bookseemed to address the obvious problems, but only scratched the surface withgeneral and vague solutions.Alison Head writes very well and did a greatdeal of research, if anything, her endnotes serve as a great reference forother GUI books.Ironically, this book about 'design' was poorly laid out,and the 'helpful vignettes' were plunked right in the middle of chapters, making it difficult to read.Maybe Allison's publisher should apply someof her design concepts to their own book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a New Approach to Information Sharing Development!
The Internet has become a leading source for all kinds of information. Government agencies, companies, organizations, schools, libraries, hobbyists, and others have placed just about anything and everythingonline. In doing so many have neglected the ease of which people searchingonline can find and access what they are looking for at the millions ofWebsites that adorn cyberspace.5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible reference guide that is fun to read.
This book is an reference guide for making decisions about computer based information resources. It covers CD-ROMs, web sites, and commercial databases. The first half of the book develops the design theory involved in human computer interfaces and the second half of the book shows how to apply that theory. The presentation of the material is well organized and flows in a logical manner. At the same time, the reader can dive into the book at any point, and completely comprehend the material or find useful items of information. It is an excellent reference guide because of the many tables, figures, and checklists that can be used immediately to make decisions on computer based information resources. At the same time, the coverage of the HCI theory and many reference resources make it an excellent text for learning more about HCI and design of computer based information resources. The interviews with experts in the field such as Don Norman and Jakob Nielsen, side bars on design interface issues, and the field tests of products such as the Southwest Airlines web site and Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia add to the readability and user friendly tone of the book. The variety of material makes the book interesting to read and hard to put aside. This is definitely an indispensable reference guide that will soon be worn from constant use ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I am returning my copy of this book
I am a programmer, familiar with old fashion languages and having had some experience with ASP, SQL Server, Access.
5-0 out of 5 stars Low-impact, high-value intro to VB.NET
Moore uses a light, conversational writing style which occasionally borders on the downright silly, yet is sure toassuage the fears of first-timers to programming, and/or those unfamiliar with Object-Oriented Programming.4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate intro into VB.NET
The author, while having an amusing style of prose which does wear on the reader at times, covers a wide range of topics in this book, so much so that rarely does it give you enough to feel like an adequate programmer in that area. Also, most of the time author say "do this" and rarely does he explain well the theory and design behind why you are doing it. I would have given it a slightly worse review, if not for the Tip/Tricks Section (chapter 8) which is an excellent chapter on how to do various tasks in ASP.NET and VB.NET. You will need another book(s) to explain ADO.NET, .NET, and the OOP aspects of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable concepts, presented in a fun-to-read way
I saw the author's presentation at SD West 05, and that made me even more interested in reading this book.Jeff obviously understands the material very well, and he explains the issues eloquently.Fortunately, his book is at least as impressive as his verbal presentation.
2-0 out of 5 stars Clueless?
I looked at the sample pages, and saw fig. 1.2 giving an analysis of a website that didn't clearly identify its overall goals , etc. But the page in question was so obviously one of those 'search network' typo-url cookie-cutter sites of domain squatters. It's not a serious site, and anyone with half a clue in web marketing knows this. So even though I've no idea what the rest of the book says, I doubt the writer's judgment and current state of knowledge. I mean, if he can't spot a squatter spam site, what else is he oblivious to?

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it.......
I'm an auditor, I review other peoples work and decisions.I wanted something to help provide a structure to assess web site quality. I don't want to appear like the Boss in the Dilbert Cartoons but I needed a "soft" introduction - I'm not creative! My home page is sufficient evidence of very limited design skills http://mysite.verizon.net/vze48sdz/.

5-0 out of 5 stars Esta es LA Guia para Webmasters
Read more

Editorial Review

Ask the computer any question and it will figure out how to give you a correct answer. At least, that's always been the science-fiction scenario, a dream still far removed from real-life computing. But the growth of "intelligent agent" software appears to be bringing that scenario closer to reality. Is it all just hype, as many believe? Alper Caglayan and Colin Harrison examine the realities of today's intelligent agents and discover that while we're still a long way from the Hollywood picture of business computing, today's very real agents are already powerful business tools. They examine agents for Internet, Intranet and desktop use, evaluating processes that users can customize or automate. They look at agents that seek and screen information, sort e-mail, simulate human conversation, streamline processes for users, and much more. But they go deeper, delving into the processes and trade-offs of introducing agents into a workplace--including security risks. Perhaps equally important is that Caglayan and Harrison offer a clear and sensible taxonomy, providing a means for cogent discussion of agent technology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great book! It is a super introduction to agent technology. There is so much hype about agents around -- this book provides a coherent taxonomy of agent technologies and really explains what agents can and cannot do. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource, demystifies important topic.
