5-0 out of 5 stars Hacks Indeed
This IS the Blackberry bible. The shortcuts are excellent time savers. Dave shows many ways of maximizing the uses of your device. If you have a Blackberry you need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a new user of the Blackberry, this book has helped me tremendously. I especially like the "time-savings" tips and shortcuts the author provided as well as hacks that have enabled me to get the most out of my Blackberry. Well-worth the money in my view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source of ideas
I wish I had gotten this book the day I got my 8700c.It would have saved me a lot of time, as I spent a lot of hours browsing forums and doing web searches to figure out how to do the kinds of things that are explained in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a 'must have' book four years later.
This is the book to buy after you have two other basic books on web design. As your other books are thrown away or replaced you will still need 'Site-Seeing'. It covers both the history and progress of web design. Read this book in bed or on a plane trip, preferably not in front of a monitor. I also found it helpful not to take the chapters in any formal order. Delve in! You will be helped. To me, this book is so solid that an upgrade is still a couple of years away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual & "wordy" is what makes this book great!
As a fan of Site-Seeing, I must respond to a few of the reviews asserting that the author should have condensed certain material in the book. For me, the many visual examples and the great, detailed explanations (one reviewer suggested "wordy") are exactly what makes this book so useful.Rather than just skimming over important design concepts, the author actually takes the time to properly explain these important principles and illustrate them with examples. In my opinion, many other web design books use only words, whereas in this book, you can actually see and understand what the author is talking about. This is very important to me, as a visual learner. That is just one reason why this book is still on my desk.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very usable.
For a web usability book, this one is suprisingly unusable. The book is overdesigned, making it sometimes hard to read because of all the visual clutter on the page. It's also over-wordy. If only the author had taken Steve Krug's advice (which he mis-quotes in the first chapter) to cut out half the words, and then cut out half of what's left, this might have been a great book. As it is, its only contributions are from the design standpoint, such as not breaking the model of the web, and not making the navigation so contrast-y as to visually distract from the content. Otherwise, just about everything he says is said more succinctly in Krug's book, "Don't Make Me Think." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The seminal HCI book
No other book in the field of HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) is as broad, has so many useful guidelines and is a better bibliography as Shneiderman DTUI (Designing the User Interface).
1-0 out of 5 stars Verbosity at its finest
This book looks more like a collection of references than a real text book. The author inserts references to other works and papers in such a random and repetitive fashion that makes reading the booka real pain in the ass.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent revision
As most reviewers have noted, this is a classic and must-have book in the field of HCI. This fourth edition--newly published in March 2004--has been thoroughly revised to include much material related to the WWW.It does appear that Shneiderman took care to go through each chapter and remove less relevant material in favor of including new topics that have come up since the last edition was written. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Second Thomas Duff's Review
The JFC Swing Tutorial Second Edition is among the very best how-to-do it programming books I've read---and I've read scores! For this reason, I felt compelled to write a review of the book, admiring its organization, applauding its authors and encouraging progammers who need to to write Java GUIs to hurry up and by it.But then I read Thomas Duff's review;I became redundant. My recommendation is to read Mr. Duff's excellent review---knowing that I agree with every word of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars great potential but poor delivery
This book has a great potential to be instructive, however, i give it a one star because it fails miserably in the delivery. The book has one full example in chapter 2 then after that all the examples are from the CD and the information about a particular issue such as comboboxes for example is strewn with code snippets that only address the most basic information; but when one looks at the full example from the CD, it contains much more in depth code that goes beyond the scope of the particular lesson. This left me with a confused situation. On one hand i have a very basic example that only shows the bare minimum of how to use a component and on the other i have code that introduces methods that are not very pertinent to the example and require more explanation. If it is pertinent then it should be explained fully which is not.
4-0 out of 5 stars Second edition is great
This tutorial is well laid out and thorough. It looks suitable for learning Swing (I'm already fairly proficient) except for beginners to GUIs. It's also well organized as a reference work. It's much easier to understand than "Java Swing" from O'Reilly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power to create, modernize, and extend CICS applications
Together with the COBOL programming language, IBM's CICS (Customer Information Control System) has formed the most common set of tools for building customer transaction applications in the world of large enterprise mainframe computing.CICS is used by 470 of the Fortune 500 companies to process 20 billion transactions a day. Written by John Horswill & Members of the CICS Development Team at IBM Hursley, Designing And Programming CICS Applications introduces new users of IBM's mainframe (OS/390) to CICS features. Experienced users will learn how to integrate existing mainframe systems with newer technologies, including the Web, CORBA, Java, CICS clients, and Visual Basic; as well as how to link MQSeries and CICS. Whether developers have thousands of terminals or a client/server environment with workstations and LANs exploiting modern technology such as graphical interfaces or multimedia, Designing And Programming CICS Applications gives them the power to create, modernize, and extend CICS applications.A CD-ROM is included.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent information resource on integrating CICS and web
For many companies, large or small, the mission-critical applications run in the CICS environment. The difficulty of opening up those business logicand data for access through web interface often comes from the fact thatthe mainframe programmers don't know much about the web technology whilethe new web guys usually know little about CICS. This book bridges the gapbetween the two camps, and provides step-by-step instruction on how toapply and integrate the different technologies including Java, MQSeries, etc. This book is a must-read for anyone responsible integrating CICS andweb interface. The only drawback is that this book focuses on OS/390, whilethere are many CICS applications running in other platforms such as OS/2. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mastering JavaServer Faces
Good outline of JavaServer Faces but not enough examples. Too much theory not enough practical examples. It is not a complete reference so you need other books or sources to get answers on specific functions and uses of JavaServer Faces.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
The problem is that the book has a lot of mistakes and don't explain some mechanism like ValueBinding. The book use hibernate to persist data to database and this can be a problem to people who don't know this technology, in my opinion they should have used plain JDBC technology, it would be much easier to the readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best JSF Book I've Read Yet
This is the best JSF book I've read to date.To begin with, its an excellent value. There is no wasted space. The O'Reilly book has 242 pages of appendix which basically regurgitates the API (shame!)You won't find that here. Also, the authors do not waste your time explaining what a JSP page is, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ironically All Show and No Substance
Some books can trick you into thinking that there is going to be something to say when there really isn't. Sadly, this book falls into that category. Bound between the covers are 400-plus pages of common sense, rants about Windows, praises for OS/2, and constantly repeated philosophies that are never truly demonstrated.
2-0 out of 5 stars for the novice really
the book isn't a bad book but it's more of a reference and a little on the novice side.If you haven't already, check out "The Human Interface" by Jef Raskin. That is a far superior book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on "Desktop", not "Web" UIs

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn to use applescript
this is just a great book im not sure where to begin this review. i am new to programming and i wanted to start off small and applescript seemed like just the thing. after reading tiger missing manual i decided to get this book on the recomendation of david pogue. i was not disapointed. applescript is really easy to use and this book shows you excatly how to use it(just like an missing manual book does). i highly reccomnd this and any other missing manual title to any beginner or power user. being a power user myself i definetly got my moneys worth from all these books. im currently reading iphoto 6 from david pogue and im allittle disapointed on that one its more of a "how to take pictures" than how to use iphoto. but iphoto being such an intuitive program you really don't need much to learn to use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars More like a travel guide
This is not a "manual" in any sense of the word. A manual tells you how, where, and when. This is more like a tour guide of Applescript. Sure there are scripts, but few of them make the Mac easier to use than its own OSX interface. The information is presented in such a scattered form, that it is hard to follow for very long, and therefore hard to learn. It's like trying to learn to be a chef by watching the Cooking Channel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good on the other side of the author's idiosyncracies
Ah the philosophical musings of Chris Crawford...
1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of hand-wringing and hand-waving, little substance
Having just finished Jef Raskin's disappointing "The Humane Interface", I looked forward to reading this one. After all, Chris Crawford is a legendary game designer, whose Balance Of Power I played to death in the Eighties. Here was someone who should be able to (a) engage me and (b) show me some novel ways to think about software design in general and interactivity in particular.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Gold Mine of Ideas
This book is a very diffcult read. Touching on a whole lot of subjects, alternating between abstract, complicated theory and abundant, confusing detail, and displaying Crawford's usual Thesaurus-o-holic writing style, it is sure to leave you scratching your head in bewilderment a couple of times.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Are you a .NET developer and/or user-interface designer that is familiar with HTML and the basics of XML? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Lori MacVittie, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gives the reader a broader sense of the XAML market.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Conceived
This is one book that could have benefited from a firm critique while still in proposal form by someone cognizant of the concerns of the potential audience.
1-0 out of 5 stars Slapped together - Dry and Boring
The previous post says nothing about the quality of this book and thus should be considered a definition of the XAML technology rather than a review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise, and Useful
5-0 out of 5 stars A *MUST-HAVE* for ANYBODY interested in 8051/8052 or Assembly Language in general...
This guy REALLY knows his stuff, and the book is so easy to follow.I have NEVER done assembly programming, and didn't know ANY of the syntax. After a couple of chapters, I was programming in it like I had been doing it for years. The way the author lays things out makes it a breeze to learn how to open up the world of 8051/8052.I *loved* the book, and I use it as a reference ALL THE TIME.
