Excellent Overview
Howard's book is an excellent overview of a number of service provider issues and technology. For myself, it helped me to wade through the morass of VPN technologies on the market when we were researching the replacement of our frame relay network. If you have an interest in the issues faced by service providers, or if you would like to learn more about wide area network technologies, then this book is a must-read. Howard's sense of humor and insightful anecdotes make this an especially easy read, despite the high technical content.

Too bad so many startups never read this book
Howard Berkowitz is known in the networking community for his writing which has helped many, many people earn advanced certifications. But Howard doesn't write to that goal; he writes, instead, to the goal of helping people understand what it takes to make a network actually perform and deliver the business function it was purchased for.This is another in that series of lucid and focused books.Read more

Great book to get started on UI design
This was my first book on user interface design, and it was a great choice.It gives good information on principles and also provides specific usable information for how to use controls, etc.I found the organization of the book easy to use and enjoyed reading it.

Good book, still useful
The author of this book does a very good job of describing and illustrating common GUI design mistakes. He has categorized the problems in broad topics such as "GUI Component Bloopers" and "Interaction Bloopers", then gives concrete examples of the bloopers that occur within each broad topic. The individual bloopers are well illustrated, and examples of better approaches are given.
Too old
Don't buy this book, it refers to applications written in early '90. Today it is completely a different story. ... Read more

Good introduction and reference resource
This is a useful introduction to the Bash shell used in unix, linux, and other *nix type operating systems. It takes you from a very basic introduction into deeper concepts including shell scripting and customization. Highly recommended for the niche market it is intended to reach. I found it clear, useful and detailed without being dull.

Essential linux skills.
This book (2nd. ed.) shows how bash shell programming exploits special capabilities of linux and unix. Shell programming manages other, more specialized, programs. So understanding the shell is essential to fully exploiting multitasking environments like linux.

While the MS Windows User Experience will be a necessary reference book for MS UI developers, it fails as a general guide for creating a "great user experience." Scaning the first chapter, for example, I just had to laugh: I had been just reading a text on the new Macintosh OS X interface then switched to the Windows book. The Mac OS X UI guide was simplistic and bland, while the first chapter of the Windows guide was verbose and unnecessarily complex. How stereotypical is it possible to get? Also, in chapter one of the MS book there are less than 2 introductory pages of positive text, then 16 pages on what NOT to do. Great book for GUI design

Excellent Reference for even the beginning Linux System Administrator
Being a fairly new Linux System Administrator, I find Jamie Camerons book a huge help. Not only does it cover evey aspect of Webmin, but also covers the essentials of Linux System Administration and how Webmin can be used to make things easier. The book follows a good sequence and builds upon previous chapters. I'm actually looking at purchasing another copy as I already have this one full of tabs and nearly worn out!
Book Teaches Linux, Not Just Webmin
Before buying this book, I used Webmin and thought it was pretty easy to use and didn't think I needed a book about it. Was I wrong. A nice book with some flaws
Webmin is a pretty neat tool for administering a server using a GUI, particularly remotely. Managing Linux Systems with Webmin, written by Webmin's author Jamie Cameron, is an extensive look at using and extending it, a good guide not without flaws.Read more

Very Useful For Beginners and Mid-level Developers
This is a well-written, easy-to-use book hitting the main points of ASP.NET 2.0.I've never read it cover-to-cover, but have gotten great use from it as a reference manual when I need to quickly figure out how to do something new in ASP.NET 2.0.
good introduction to ASP.NET 2.0
This is a pretty good introduction to ASP.NET 2.0 for folks who are already familiar with ASP.NET 1.1.All of the examples are in VB.NET, so if that bothers you, you might want to look elsewhere.I prefer C# myself, so I just rewrote the examples in C# as I went along.That gave me something mildly interesting to do as I worked my way through the book.

Great Book for beginner's and a Excellent reference for Pro's. COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER
I have little UNIX or Solaris experience, so for me this book provided a spotty overview of the Solaris 8 O/S.It didn't provide an overall perspective of Solaris, tying all the pieces together to form a complete picture.It would have been great if the authors listed out the applications that come with Solaris (there are a truck load); it would have been even better if they detailed some of them.For those of us that don't have time to read through an author's opinions, this text leaves much to be desired.

May-be wait for 2nd edition?
I bought this because of the JXUL project.To that end I found this book very handy to understand that basics, intermediate aspects and application of XUL, RDF, XBL, etc. Quickly out of date - wait for 2nd edition?

Nice and Solid GUI Design Handbook
This book helped me a lot as in my day-to day work. I used it as powerful guide for the construction of the "nice and pleasant" presentation layer for our applications. Our customers were happy - and it is the best feedback somebody can give.
Good Reference for Application Design
As a technical writer in the computer industry, I can only say that I wish every application engineer would have this book on their shelf so that, inbetween downloading music, videotapingthe next cubicle and creating web applications, every once in awhile they could take it down, read a few pages and learn to design better programs.The usability of a web application can make or break a rollout and when it's a badly designed system, it can confuse hundreds of people, require separate training, and just plain waste money.Perhaps managers of web application efforts should get this as a "gift" for their designers.

Not worth the price
When I first bought this book, I expected to get more out of it in terms of designing web pages with users in mind.It focused a lot on setting up testing centers with a paper system and getting feedback from users.It was very brief on good web design techniques (doesn't cover navigation enough).The hands on exercises leaves something to be desired.Although there were some good ideas in this book, I found myself "hanging" at the end as if there should have been much more.

Still a landmark, but we've moved on since then
I've long been curious about this book because it is so often cited and hailed by current usability experts as the "starting point of software usability." And maybe it was a groundbreaking work in 1995, when hardcore coders and "power users" still made up the majority of the user base. But now, many of Cooper's claims and proposals seem awkward or downright unusuable... the antithesis of what usability now stands for. Modern Interface Design
This book is by no doubt a valuable resource for any software developer, nevertheless, more liveliness, humor or variety would have made it less monotonous. Prepare yourself to spend a great deal of time to tackle through more than half a thousand pages of very dense text, which is worth reading. The previous book by Alan Cooper, "The Inmates are Running the Asylum" is much more vivid, concise and amusing. I would recommend reading "The Inmates" first to get acquainted with Goal-Directed Design and the concept of considerate software, and then proceed to "About Face 2.0" to expand the knowledge and make it actionable. Definitive resource for web masters who consider themselves professionals
Each time I sit down to redevelop a website I revist this book.It can really help you understand the shortcomings of a site's present information architecture and explain those shortcomings to non-techy clients.

Interesting, but a bit on the fluffy side
I'm the kind of reader that enjoys straight to the point books. As interesting as this book was, I found it rambled and went too deep into how to sell IA to administration, or learn about IA in schools, or what steps should one take to become an information architect, etc. I found it presented ideas, often left the reader at the end of each section with "it depends" or "you'll see what works best for you". Which is fine, but isn't really helpful.

Solaris 9 for Dummies
A good basic reference to get you started in the world of Solaris.The book is easy to understand and use.

Good book for Solaris novices
This is a good book for pepple new to Solaris. It covers command line basics, CDE X Windows, Star Office, and some basic GUI (menu)-based system administration and security.
good read - up to speed quickly - good place to start
While having some classroom experience with Solaris I would not consider myself experienced with it at all. So with having a big Solaris implementation ahead, I needed a good read on Solaris to get me up to speed & figure out where I was heading. This was a good book to start out with, balanced between someone who would use Solaris on a day to day basis (end user wise) and between someone who would be the sys admin of a Solaris box. It covered many topics lightly, but that is the nature of the book (and the Dummies series). This title was what I was hoping for. Great reference, ok learning tool
When i bought this book, i already knew console based C++, so this isn't my first plunge into programming.I didn't, however, have a lick of PHP knowledge.
Teaches authors they can publish a book (only)
Well, after reading the reviews on EVERY "no programming needed" beginner MySQL book available on Amazon.com, I am convinced NONE of them teach a "beginner" anything. Commodore language was my "beginner" programming, but decided to pick it up again.
It worked for me
I have a small shelf filled with PHP books. They all helped me a little bit (perhaps I'm just a slow learner.) But it wasn't until I worked through the 24 lessons in this book that I finally began to feel that I was getting a firm grip on the fundamentals of writing solid PHP code. This is the book that turned me from a bumbling amateur to someone on a respectable intermediate level, completely comfortable with reading through more advanced books on PHP (books that go beyond the usual: "here's how to build a simple shopping cart.")

A Good Framework for Exploring
Having read a number of robotics books, what struck me first was how well structured Robosapien Companion is. This is not simply a collection of hacks and technical tidbits. Rather, it is a companion in the truest sense. Samans deftly follows the full curve of Robosapien's life, starting with Mark Tildens early BEAM endeavors and Robosapien's development, moving to cracking into the box and getting the most from a virgin 'sapien, and rounding it out with basic and advanced hacking techniques.
What a pleasant surprise
I bought a RoboSapien about 8 months ago. I tell people that I got it for my kids, but I just couldn't resist it - it looked so cute. Anyway, I played with it for a few hours and then got bored with it. It has spent the last 8 months collecting dust on a shelf.
A must - have book for Robosapiens fans....!!!
Honestly I have not finished reading this book, but I have enjoyed every page of it that I decided to give it a well deserved review. Very well written, simple, and enjoyable. This book goes from the very beginning, history and development of the Robosapien, interviews with Mark Tilden (Robosapien creator),from packaging of the robot, tips, tricks, and ways to Hacking it, with lot of black & white pictures of the robot and its internal parts. The book also give a preview of the Robosapien online community with info and resources, and insights for the new Robosapien v2. Not very useful, unless you are new to Windows Forms
The book is for absolute novices. I haven't found anything of use for intermediate (and above) windows developers.
user interfaces without richTextbox control?
i still can't believe it--that anyone would write a comprehensive book on windows user interfaces and forget to mention the RichTextBox control. The author devoted 3 pages to the Textbox control, but said virtually nothing about one of the the most powerful text display controls.
