4-0 out of 5 stars Just The Facts!
Like a navigators chart to a new world this book helps you avoid the shoals and rocks often hidden from view. With stark simplicity and a little forced humor, you are shown all of the paths one might take to reach your security destination. Sounding at times like PS's own introduction to security Mr. Carter leads you through possible routes and why they should be taken. Well worth the $, good to have for a quick reference, especially for those of us who are starting to deal with Senior Moments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Concise
I found this to be a good and concise summary of PeopleSoft security. While this information is totally found in white papers and PeopleTools documentation, it is presented in a clear and concise manner. What it does not include though are the links between primary security sets and application specific requirements (i.e. H/R Globalization and H/R defaults). It also does not go into specifics on Portal Synchronization and some of the "undocumented features" that go along with it.On the whole though, I recommend it for those who want a concise, easy to read PS security manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
I'm disappointed with this book. PeopleSoft PeopleBooks and Red Papers provide better explanation. The author, for the most part, did not add any value.I wasted $20 on this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars editing gaffe in the book's title!
This volume covers valuable topics in a readable manner. It should be useful to anyone who develops applications, interfaces, and documentation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every programmer !
I definitely recommend the book to all programmers who want to make their software more useable to the end users, which hopefully is the goal of every programmer :). The tone of the book is casual yet informative making it very easy to read unlike the hoards of other books on the market. Best of all, the author is a real programmer, probably the reason why the content is very pertinent to situations encountered by programmers and the decisions that they have to make routinely. This book provides them the tangible points to consider while making those decisions as topics ranging from User Interface design to exception handling to libraries are discussed. The author uses various practical examples and humor to drive the point home. This book is a must read for any programmer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Useful, and Entertaining
If you're looking for a book on general software design, this book won't help you much. This book is about creating usable software, not software in general. It's very hard to pinpoint what makes something usable, but Jeff does an outstanding job.I liked the fact that he often augmented a technical lesson using stories that make learning the details fun.The manner of presentation is interesting because Jeff doesn't rely on just one technique to present the information. The details are often illustrated using several methods, so it's easier to understand precisely what Jeff means.Unlike many theory type books, this one has source code examples--something that every developer can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Usability ROI
Everyone involved in usability needs a highlighted, or bookmarked iwth post-it notes, copy of this book. Its always powerful to back up how important usability is to others who are unfamiliar with its power, be it your team or a client, and this book shows you how to do figure out the return of investment with dollars, something everyone understands. Overall, it gets the point across by showing readers how to do it for themselves with formulas that are not all that difficult at all, and where to pull numbers from to calculate the ROI.

5-0 out of 5 stars you need it
Bite the bullet, buy the book. in these days of cut budgets, you must be able to justify your worth. There are formulas in this book that anyone designing software or digital products can use-- not just usability geeks. IA's, designers, GUI kids... time to learn the math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven user navigation models are excellent
This book contains a lot of usable usability practices that really works! You can get literally all the details of usability testing practices in this book, as well as how to run them. And good amount of pages are spent for user needs analysis and task analysis as the first steps explaining Web site engineering approach.4-0 out of 5 stars One more thing to make it more usable...
This book is great and very informative, however the only thing I would change (perhaps for a second edition) would be to make it spiral bound so it could lay flat while I am using it at work, which would also make it easier to photocopy the different checklists (very helpful!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Most elaborate book
This is one of the best books ive ever read from any category. The author's flow from chapter to chapter is excellent. He describes in very good detail the pitfalls that many websites fall into by sacrificing appearance for usability. He makes his convincing case why the central focus of websites should be usability which is indeed rarely emphasized. The book elaborates as to the various stages you should involve users and various members of your design team into your development. Definately a keeper. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Call it training
If you analyze data and make maps, this is well worth the money.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of map design using ArcMap
This book is the first one I would recommend to the typical GIS user wanting to make better maps. Some other reviewers have commented that many of the suggestions are basic; however, I have seen countless maps that could benefit from the design suggestions presented here.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone working with GIS software who has little prior training or experience in mapmaking
Designing Better Maps: A Guide for GIS Users is a guide to cartography, written in response to advances in digital mapping and geographic information system (GIS) software and illustrated throughout with map samples in color. With such increasingly widespread tools, more analysts, researchers, planners, graphic designers, and lay people lacking basic cartography training have been creating maps that appear slick on the surface but contain internal flaws due to common beginner mistakes. Designing Better Maps seeks to rectify such errors by offering a basic cartographic education for non-cartographers. Chapters cover the basics in type, color and color decisions, customizing symbols, properly designed marginal elements, and more. An easy-to-follow resource and a "must-have" for anyone working with GIS software who has little prior training or experience in mapmaking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for developers.
This reads like an ADO.NET user manual where all possibilities are mentioned but lack reasoning and coherence in the subject. Its not an easy read and was not written for develoipers who needs to quickly get to the topic instead itsmore for trainers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference/Resource Book
This book covers those things about ADO.NET you cannot seem to find anywhere else - web, books, etc. Examples in the book provide straight-to-the-point information and details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you needed to know about paper prototyping and more!
I thought this book covered it all... from selling the concept of paper prototyping to facilitating an actual session. Carolyn discusses, with great detail, how to bring paper to life. She shares a wealth of knowledge and experience.
3-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was missing something when prototyping-I wasn't.
3 Stars == Neutrality4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about paper prototyping
My experience has been that to create a prototype is to create a working model to allow users to test functions and features. Because so much time and effort goes into creating the protototype, time constraints prevent refining the design, and the product is rushed to market-design issues are fixed in the next release. There's a solution that's low-cost, quick, and effective in finding design issues-paper prototyping. If you want to learn about paper prototyping from a renown practioner then I highly recommend Paper Prototyping by Carolyn Snyder. 5-0 out of 5 stars from HCI International News, Number 12, September 2005
(Disclosure: I, the review-poster, am the author of the book. I clipped this review from the HCI International News, because it seems fair and helpful. However, the author of the review [who is only identified as "AM", but who is probablyAbbas Moallem, the editor of HCII] did not 'rate' the book, and Amazon won't allow one to post a review without a rating. So, the 5 stars are from me, not the author of the following review. I think it deserves that many, or I wouldn't have written it, but I am not impartial. Here's the review...)

1-0 out of 5 stars not useful anymore
While this book seemed very appealing for someone who is new to Mac OS X server and its Linux underpinnings, it is almost worthless at this point in time since it has not been updated to include the major changes that have been made in the past couple years.Save your money and visit online resources; they are much more valuable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not unless you're a time traveler
... This book is OLD and nigh unto useless unless you frequently travel in time to the first month after MacOS X Server was released. There's a reason why brick-and-mortar stores remove books from shelves and place them on the [bargain] rack....

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be recalled by the Publisher
This book is (apparently) an early attempt to describe the setup, configuration and administration of Apple's OS X server. This kind of book is much needed but this one fails miserably because it is so woefully out-of-date. It does not address 10.2 Jaguar Server and, in fact, most of the screen captures and artwork are OS 9. When it does attempt to develop a subject it does so so lightly that it's almost a hoax. Avoid this book. Save your money. Look elsewhere. Print and read the Mac OS X Server Administrator's Guide that comes free on the 10.2 Server CD. It is ten times the book that this one is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A holistic approach to .NET...
Thank You Fergal, for a "steady pen" in writing "Microsoft .NET for Programmers". The use of a FUN case study (Poker client-server) to synergize understanding of .NET principles in a "real-life" application is a boon to communicating such a vast subject.5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
Cover all the what and how-to about .NET in a simple and clear way. Can't believe the author does that so nicely in 300 pages. Great for experience programmer get started with .NET

2-0 out of 5 stars Zeroxed Book?
I didn't like this book. It does not go into the individual concepts enough. I found it to be really unhelpful. And sorry, but my desk already has a paperweight. And I have issues about spending any amount of money for what amounts to a bound version of copied paper. The entire book was a very poor zerox copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did they photocopy this book?
I just opened up the OOP section and noticed that the diagrams that are in the book appear to be photocopied. One diagram shows an inheritance relationship between some banking objects. There are nine objects in the diagram and you CAN NOT see the lines bordering each object, nor the lines between the objects. Most of the other line diagrams are fuzzy and not solid (imagine taking a faint line drawing and photocopying it).Two big thumbs down on printing quality. As for the material, I have read about 3-4 paragraphs, so I can't comment on it.I am seriously considering returning it since some of the diagrams are unreadable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Waaaaay too basic
OK. I am an experienced C/C++ programmer, so you have to keep in mind that this review will be based on my background. The book is OK. That's why I gave it a 3, but it's nothing more. It is very basic. It has good explanation of the basics, but nothing more. And my opinion is that if you are a C/C++ programmer you really don't need the C# basics. They are just so similar. The thing I hate the most about this book is that it doesn't go into depth at all. Some concepts are not explained very well either. I actually wish that I hadn't bought this book. I am yet to see a good C# book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars skip the first six chapters
I purchased this book expecting that it offered practical insights into SolidWorks functionality, as I was a neophyte user at that time and was hungry for a good reference work. However, the first third of the book covered very basic and generic drafting technique, from the importance of visual thinking to GD&T. These are the sort of things drafting students learn in their first year of college, and I was already very familiar with all these concepts due to my years of experience as a mechanical designer. If you are a recent graduate of a drafting program and have just begun using SolidWorks, this would be a useful book, and it's mainly for this reason that I gave it three stars. If you have any experience working in the industry, there are probably better aftermarket manuals available for the serious SolidWorks user. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Update 3 1/2 Years Later
I first reviewed this book three and a half years ago.It is time for an updated review to reaffirm this book's value nearly four years after it was first published.5-0 out of 5 stars Expert advice on how to double support quality and productiv
Tired of continued turnover of skilled systems personnel? Confused by the haphazard introduction of new technologies, such as Windows NT? In this new extraordinary book you can learn both the practical skills and culturalcontext needed to deal with growing complexity of systems support in arapidly evolving marketplace. Specific to distributed computing systems, this first-of-its-kind idea book divulges knowledge accumulated over yearsof practical experience in the arena of performance, availability and costreduction. Like a modern-day Frederick W. Taylor, Lirov believes thatsystems support can be rigorously quantified and improved throughdisciplined planning and execution. He pulled together a team of expertsfirst to elevate systems support at Lehman Brothers to the best service onWall Street, and then to share t he acquired grasp of this tremendouslydifficult subject with the readers. Abandoning the traditional approach offocusing on a single support discipline, Lirov paints a panoramic view ofan all-inclusive support process. In his lucid foreword to the book, KevinMcGilloway, CIO at Lehman Brothers, emphasizes the criticality of matchingtechnical solutions with cultural change. The topics span the entire gamutof support disciplines encompassing all aspects of systems, database, andbatch administration, including contributions from experts at such leadingedge institutions as He wlett-Packard and Cray. The ideas, described incomprehensive detail, transcend the Intranet and apply to systemsmanagement on the Internet. These ideas also encompass multiple systemsplatforms, especially, UNIX and Windows NT. The book's only drawback isthat it stops short of offering more detail on cross-platform systemsmanagement. With dozens of practical examples, this is an advanced leveltext, geared towards IT managers, systems and database administrators, andgraduate students. If you are in the trenches, battling to managedistributed systems of unprecedented complexity, this book can save yourcareer -- and your sanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sets a new standard in systems management
This book explores the monumental task of supporting today's heterogeneous distributed computer systems. The new methodology introduced in the book is based on accountability and automation and has been key to effecting spectacular improvements in both support quality and personnel productivity at Lehman Brothers. The production of this seminal text involved a team-oriented approach.Written with colleagues from leading investment, industry, and academic institutions such as Salomon Brothers, Sun Microsystems and MIT,the work's subject reflects its team-oriented authorship. The book's uniqueness lies in its lucid treatment of a subject which is inherently behind-the-scenes.In a brilliant foreword, Kevin McGilloway, CIO of Lehman Brothers, articulates the fundamental reality of systems support where "no news is good news",and yet no modern trading can be conducted without the computer. In what he describes as the "change culture" of Wall Street, where profit depends on market dynamics, computer systems must enable traders to capitalize on the continuous evolution of markets. This dynamic marketplace tolerates nothing less than zero downtime. The book shows how tomeet the ultimate challenge of balancing change with perfect availability of the computer/communications infrastructure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Greasemonkey users unite!
I've been playing with the extensions in Firefox for some time, and one of the more interesting ones is Greasemonkey, which allows you to alter websites on the client side to add functionality or to remove annoyances. The Greasemonkey language is very similar to JavaScript, so Ajax/JavaScript junkies can get a very quick grasp of the techniques in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Technical, but good
If you're looking for a book on how to actually get started with Greasemonkey *coding* this is a great book. Sure, there's a collection of basic intro info, but this is a how-to book for coders. That's not a bad thing, of course! And from a coding standpoint, it does a great job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Index!
Has a really poor index.

5-0 out of 5 stars user interface design
i am a phd student and need to search the topic about user interface design.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scenario based design
The book is a good exploration of new way understanding user's experience. Many guru from HCI join to write the books such as Allan Maclean(his design rationale QOC). This book seems to be good but they are fail to understand what user's need. This is a representation of failure. Many authours try to take the technology based and change their title to scenario.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great start to a new way of thinking
This book resulted from a think tank on the nature of use-oriented design representations and the part they play in the development of computer systems and applications. Enter scenario-based design. The book is made upof a number of essays - each with their own spin on the idea and their ownexamples of its application. While this makes the content a little hard toaccess, it also offers a rich resource and food-for-thought. Of particularinterest to me was the relation of scenario-based design to object orienteddesign and HCI principles and practices. A must for serious designers whowant to explore ways of creating systems that better serve users. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem for novice and advanced user
Oh I just love this book. I buy a lot of technical books and find about 1 out of 5 are books I use alot. This is one of them. pretty up to data and covers gnome and KDE though most of the Hacks are not window manager specific -- Hell some of the funnest stuff is done from the command line. Full of great stuff for getting you system running the way you want.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book if you use Linux or are moving to Linux
First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.
