1-0 out of 5 stars Can not download the example code
I got this book, after reading into the first 6 chapters, I decided to try the sample codes. The book claims that the codes are downloadable from www.sybex.com, but when I went there, there is nodownload link for this book, what a disappointment!I want my money back!

1-0 out of 5 stars not much of use
If you want to learn about a few classes in .Net only you can buy this book for fun. Actually in MSDN you can almost get all the information and this is a entry level book. If you read any .net programming book for about 1 week you get all the information written in length in this book already.
2-0 out of 5 stars Reinventing the wheel? Limited and fails to Deliver
Kanglin Li's "Effective Software Test Automation" which is subtitled as "Developing an Automated Software Testing Tool" fails to deliver what it promises to be, a solution to automated software testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I'm a fairly new programmer in vb.net(finished vb.net II) and I found this book to be VERY good.Yes it is very theory intensive but the examples it gives are fairly straight forward and if you aren't the world's best programmer they show you how to make controls to make some really slick looking programs.4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and sufficiently detailed
For someone who has already used other languages for GUI design, this is a great book to get quickly up to speed in the .Net view of Windows forms. It didn't cover everything in enough detail for me but good enough to get me started. I would of liked more on data grid (how about a whole book on it as it's complex enough) and context menus but I eventually figured it out on my own. I could go for an advanced version of this book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guidelines on .NET Controls
I found this book to be excellent. It isn't 100% comprehensive, but it is full of real, practical code and suggestions for using controls. It's the only book I've found that dealt with the treeview, listview, and imagelist in enough detail. Particularly noteworthy are the descriptions on how to create custom controls based on these controls that have built-in application meaning. For example, the book explains how to create a treeview that has a hard-coded "structure" and exposes custom methods for adding/navigating your type of data. Similar advice is given with validation, drag-and-drop, form inheritance, MDI workspaces, and data binding strategies. Basically, the book is a solid guide to mastering .NET controls. Note that this book isn't the best place to learn GDI+. Although there are two excellent chapters on the subject and the basic charting control, both Apress and Wrox provide dedicated GDI+ books that focus more closely on custom drawing. Read more

Title:Access by Design
5-0 out of 5 stars "Access by Design" by Sarah Horton Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Usability and accessibility go hand in hand
I've read every book I can find on web site accessibility, and this is my favorite. Sarah Horton does a superb job of explaining the "what" and "why" of good web design principles. If we adhere to these principles, our web sites will be usable and accessible for everyone, regardless of disability or the device they use to access the web. This book is clear, concise, and to the point, and, in my opinion, a must read for all professional web designers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HTML learning has never been easier.
If you are interested in web page design and don't know here to begin you might want to take a look at this book. What you'll find is that the author's have broken down HTML and web pages into a format that allows the reader to learn at a pact that's comfortable and easy.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept!
Not enough books take this hands-on approach, but this Workbook format really works! Gets you started immediately, although some of the earlier material is elementary if you have any experience at all with HTML. But thetask-based exercises are key to finding the task you need to complete! Ialso have the Definitive Guide, which is decent as a reference, but thisbook is more hands-on, with excellent hands-on examples that can also serveas a great reference, and it's much more fun to learn with. Highlyrecommend it; I'm off to look for more Workbooks like this to beef up myWeb programming skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - A must have
Finally, an HTML book that is written with real, useful, coherent examples and explanations. I've wanted to learn HTML in a hands-on fashion without all the garbage...This book is it. Well worth it. I have a completeunderstanding of HTML and all the in and outs too. By the time I was donewith the book, I had designed an entire web site...no hassle. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not user friendly
There's a lot words, but no substance. Whenit takes you 3 chapters to get to the point where you can begin to move from generalities to specifics, well, maybe the reader should have been consulted in the design of the outline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really helpful
The authors should have paid more attention how they present this issue. Maybe the book was written in very tight schedule. The book repeated itself many times and was really badly edited. The content itself was ok, however nothing really new and not enough good reasoning. All these same concepts are presented in the other literature of UCD and HCI. I suggest Eric Schaffer's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a practical and usable book about UCD
As a usability specialist for the past 14 years, I gravitate toward books that I can actually extract from and use their contents, rather than just reading descriptions of a process. The book emphasizes the importance of a multi-disciplinary team and steps us through the different phases of the UCD process. It also includes a great FAQ section. The CD that comes with the book includes movies addressing the various stages of a user-centered design process and many other resources. This is a must-have book for all those involved in developing products and services that people can easily use. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh.
This really seems like a recycled and rehashed book quickly put together in order to rush a "new topic" to print.I'm pretty sure I recognize this content from other books I've seen on the shelf. Even the paper quality seems recycled!I got this one in the mail, and it already was yellowed - the pages seem like newsprint.I found very little value in this book, content wise. There are definitely better ones out on the market by the gurus on the subject!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up-to-date, and often wrong
Some things in this book are very useful, notably the interviews. However, this book is fairly out-of-date, and doesn't reflect the state of the art for speech recognition technology. The section on linguistics is wrong more often than right, and wouldn't add much to the reader's understanding of designing speech interfaces even if the errors were corrected. While I think that the authors' knowledge of user interface design, in general, is solid, their experience with speech is less so.For example, in the interview with Kate Dobroth (which is really the highlight of the book for me) the authors/editors consistenly transcribe the term "n-best" as "end best" pointing to the authors' inexperience with the technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get started
This books provides some great ideas of where and how to get started with Speech Interfaces.I found the interviews to be very helpful. The people interviewed within the book share great insights and ideas as to where theysee speech technology going in the future. The technology discussed in thebook is low cost, and in my opinion, not very high tech. There are bettersolutions which can handle more robust speech applications, none of whichwere mentioned here. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good cheap introduction
Who is the author?
3-0 out of 5 stars The audience for this book is somewhat confusing...
In a perfect world, you could pick up any new technology in 10 minute chunks. But the world isn't perfect, and some technologies don't even come close to this 10 minute standard. This could be a case in point...Teach Yourself AJAX in 10 Minutes by Phil Ballard.
1-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself?
I grabbed the book at a recent computer store and thought it would be a nice little read. The first half of the book baby-stepped thru too much material. When I finally got to some actual 'AJAX' code I was disappointed that only the simplest examples worked as written. I thought maybe I was just not 'seeing' my own typing errors so I downloaded the code samples from the website and found that they deviated from the book.Which is right? I could'nt get the more complicated interesting code samples to work, (the ones I bought the book for!). If you are an expert programmer (not me) you could probably easily see the syntax errors and correct them. But then again if you are an expert you wouldn't NEED the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing book, but with some good ideas
This is a deeply disappointing book, typical of a field in which approbation by academic peers seems to be much more important than delivering real help to those designing real user interfaces.4-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts and ideas, despite the examples
This book addresses a basic issue of obtaining repeatable success in user interface design with the use of interaction design patterns. I seldom come across a book that poignantly strikes a chord where I have personally witnessed so much opportunity for improvement in our field. My personal work on hundreds of user interface applications over the past decade have led me to pursue the approach of Visual Design Patterns as a means to achieve more successful and consistent user interfaces. Jan Borcher adds rigor to this approach by providing an opening round of design techniques and pattern languages for documenting and communicating Interaction Design Patterns using an XML-based notation. His pattern approach draws upon object oriented pattern work by Kent Beck whom I personally was introduced to back in the late 1980's when Kent assisted me designing large-scale applications using Smalltalk for the financial community. The author does an excellent job of explaining how patterns can be used to capture, share and structure user interface design knowledge from their projects and how to use the patterns to allow for better communication among multi-disciplinary teams. My only issue with the book is the detailed working example used to drive home the concepts. For this, Jan uses an Interactive Music Exhibit to explain the detailed implementation of his ideas. While this approach can be very effective for some designers, my fear is that a large part of the book's audience will be left scratching their heads as they try to relate the interactive music case study examples to more business oriented examples facing them in their daily life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book, I have learned a lot from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars W3C DOM way of developing DHTML applications
What I like about this book is that it focuses on the W3C DOM way of developing DHTML client applications. Most other Dynamic HTML books focus too much document.write(), proprietary extensions to web standards, or server side dynamic web pages.1-0 out of 5 stars This should be DUHtml
I have to say while I enjoyed the writing style of this book, it is a total waste of time and money. There are many better resources available to learn dhtml for free on the web. The examples in the book, if they work, are repeated throughout the text without giving new examples. And they will not validate with W3C's validators.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Know-how for architecting Internet-based software systems
Non-functional requirements, i.e. the many software -ilities, are often neglected in the development of software systems. Even though they are a key factor in final user satisfaction and everybody acknowledges their importance, their prominence is usually downplayed. This book tries to fill this gap and it focuses on balancing the non-functional features of Internet-based software systems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of standard enterprise architecture.
My background is in enterprise application development/architecture, and I found this book to be a great introduction to the larger scope of system architecture. The patterns presented paint an easy to understand picture of what a highly capable Inter/intra- net system should look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I can recommend this book. It is well-written and readable, with practical advice and examples. I am referencing it as part of my daily work as a Usability Analyst in a large government department.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike's book won'tbe gathering dust on your shelf....
This book rocks!Of all the reference resources I have in my cube, this is the one I lend out to people who ask, "jb, what is user research and how do you do it?"Mike's book has the techniques down - soup to nuts -- useful for the novice and seasoned practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for user experience professionals!
I'm always recommending this book to my colleagues. This is not a book that is meant to be read cover to cover. It's more of a desk top reference for all kinds of user research techniques. I've found it to be very comprehensive. Buy it, you won't regret it! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book to learn from
This is an odd book. It does not really teach you how to do anything with the Apache software you just downloaded. It just tells you all about the modules, protocols, and so on in a reference type manner. So if you think you're going to learn how to setup a webserver and begin practicing with PHP, XML, HTML and other facets of Web development from this book you would be disappointed. There is nothing practical in here either for an beginner or an expert.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Complete Reference" Is a Mis-Nomer
The trouble with this book can be summed up in the Introduction:

Wow I was lost in the first 50 pages. Threw that book away. Might be good for programers that know some of the stuff. Very hard to follow book. Never going to buy another book without Amazon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Newbies
If you have a Web host that gives you cPanel as part of your Web hosting package [...], you've got a great site control panel at your disposal. I use cPanel on all my servers, and while I'm fairly good at it, I know there are many folks out there who are a bit afraid of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to cPanel functionality
I was sent a copy of this book to review as a neutral third party host.I have no relation to the author/publisher or any personal benefit in reviewing the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful and comprehensive, but too hastily written
This is a useful book for those who need in-depth information on GCC, but needs more effort in both writing and editing. There are numerous copy-paste-itis errors (contact me for a list), which shows that it was not properly proof-read.It also has passages in various chapters which are nearly duplicates of each other, e.g., two "Multiple Source Files to Executable" passages (pages 70 & 106), and five on "Creating a Shared Library" (73, 110, 132, 144, 165).Admittedly some of the details vary from language to language, but there's no explanation of what these differences are; the passages are merely repeated with minor changes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, comprehensive, authoritative
Recommended for Unix programming (Linux, too) students and serious programmer wannabes.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your "How do I eat this GCC thing?" book
When you are new to a platform you want to get a book that explains the big picture on how things work in this platform; you also want to get enough information on how to get started, not just the easy stuff that you can figure out yourself. This is that book for the GNU platform. If you are already a GCC guru, you probably will find little new here, but if you come from another compiler this book will give you a great introduction with enough information so you can start working right away and be productive from the first day. ...
