1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy.
Pretentious, meandering, and bereft of anything that could be mistaken for value. I question its use even as a cautionary tale of a man who has lost all ability to distinguish between the real world and a world of pretend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Virtuality: The New World
The author presents a tour of cyberspace. During this journey, welearn how the author feels, and what their priorities are. Cyber communites are the logical extension of chat sites, and web/ mailexchanges. In the real world, where restrictions can be placed on our daily lives, virtual reality provides an escape. Exploring this venue, we can learn more about ourselves as we interact with others, and the new environment. I'm glad the author documented their experiences!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Laurel" speaks
I was the character that Dibbell called "Laurel" in his book. I was "there" though the entire story he describes, reading what he read in real time, although I never "spoke" with him (on-line oroff). His book is remarkably accurate, although he does not have all thefacts straight of the people behind the LambdaMOO characters. He deserves alot of credit -- he got it closer than anyone else possibly could have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very minimal compared to a desktop
This is basically about using a version of java to design applications for cellphones. Unlike the standard java, J2SE, this version, J2ME, is stripped down, in recognition of the much more limited resources in a cellphone or other typical mobile computer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading book
This seems to be a converted thesis to book, not the worst job but certainly without much effort.I'm not surprised its not in stock.
5-0 out of 5 stars A landmark book -- Let it open your eyes to the future.
This book changed me. I have started to view my experiences using computers in new ways. I have to admit that Fogg is right: Most computing experiences -- especially those online -- are designed to influence us in some way. At first this really bothered me. But then I accepted persuasive technology as a growing reality and began to be a smarter user.
1-0 out of 5 stars Oy!
This is the second book I have decided to review. I have decided to do so inorder that others may avoid my mistake. The book is banal. It goes on and on, creating category after category of needless taxonomies. Nothing even slightly new or interesting. Additionally it suffer the problem of all "internet" books. It was hoplessly outdated by the ime it hit thw shelves. Someone exceptionaly tiresome wrote a phd thesis, invented jargon and then decided to turn it into a book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
There was really nothing in here that you couldn't teach yourself by just playing with the software.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable
Remember the days when software came in a big box with one small disc, lots of loose paper and a big, thick manual? Nowadays software is often downloaded with just a mouse click, which means no paper warranty to loose and no manual to flick through. This leaves an opening for companies that want to sell you that missing manual. Invision Power Board 2: A User Guide from Packt Publishing is just such a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for practical decision making
I got this book unexpectedly. I wrote to Glasshaus expressing the difficulty in purchasing their titles in India and Bruce Lawson, their Brand Visionary, promptly responded with details and followed it up by sending me a complimentary copy of this book. I was quite surprised, to say the least. It will be tempting to dismiss this as a mere publicity gimmick, but Glasshaus does have a unique way of going about their publishing business. Take a look at their site. I wonder how many other big names in publishing maintain an interesting and useful blog, to mention just one.5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Guru books
Usability: The Site Speaks For Itself has been bedside reading for a couple months. This book has been a great downtime inspiration. This book, unlike the Guru usability books, teaches you how to approach Web interface design and development with the user in mind. The hard fast rules some experts espouse do not always work well with our own users. This book does a wonderful job teaching us how to think through the process. The book provides examples of six varied sites and their developer's approaches to creating usable sites for their audiences. This books is a joy to look at as well as read. There are many nuggets tucked in the pages that make it worth the price. When building Web sites it is best to remember the one constnt is it all depends and we need to know how to think through these situations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I found this to be a waste of my time and money. I had to choose a book on usability in order to make a presentation on for a usability course I am taking at Ohio University. For the course we are reading Jakob Neileon's "Designing Web Usability." This book is a good book on usability. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Computer Science coursebook
I approached this volume with high hopes, but these were largely frustrated. If, like me, you hope to gain something of immediate application, this is not your book. It is very much a computer science coursebook rather than something of direct use to a practitioner. That is to say that it is an overview of the field, with little at the programming level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book on GIS
Having read many books of the kind I can state with confidence that this one is the best introductory book on the topic. The authors claim that the book is best-suited to people approaching GISs with a computer-science perspective and/or background and this should be taken into consideration by all prospective buyers. However, the book should still be a most valuable resource to readers from other backgrounds, as it remains the most comprehensive in its domain, and is very readablethanks to the lucid writing style of the authors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on GIS Technical Infrastructure
I was impressed with the authors for their clear and lucid style, assembling and relating diverse topics in a simplistic view, ranging from computer science to philosophy, to present a brilliant holistic view of GIS technical infrastructure. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A mish-mash of articles that's not very actionable.
I had recently purchased the NielsenNorman group's International User Interfaces whitepaper, ..., was impressed with the whitepaper, and consequently had high hopes for this book. I was pretty disappointed. It's a mish-mash of articles, only a few of which were very actionable. One such article, in chapter 3, is pretty good in that it covers to what degree various cultures communicate explicitly versus non-explicitly. This fact alone is very useful to anyone doing usability testing or market research outside the US.

2-0 out of 5 stars Art Book-? Yes. Design Guide? No Way
If you'd like a beautiful art book to display on your coffee table that attests to what you do for a living (designing Web sites, typography, software, interiors, etc.), then this book would be a good option. If you want real information about design, and guidance to improve your design skills, keep on looking. You will be disappointed in a book with illegibly tiny type for its body text (I know, I know, this book is about designing for users' needs first and good looks second).5-0 out of 5 stars Provides an assessment of modern designs
Designers have traditionally guided their audience until recently; now user needs and activities become the priorities of good designing. This provides an assessment of modern designs which require audience participation. Chapters discuss how designs relate to use and efficiency, and provide examples of modern design interaction which is driving design choices around the world. An essential key for any designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough. New angle on interaction.
When I picked up the book, I expected it to be only Websites. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to see that Ms. Baggerman has investigated the design principles necessary for anything with which a human being interacts--be it a magazine, a font, packaging, or, of course, a Website. Clearly, knowledgeably written and fun to read, I found the approach refreshing and inspiring. It really makes you think about the need to put the end-user first in ANYTHING you design. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A book to be polished, condensed, extinguished...
Honestly, the book is not a bad book, it presents an interesting yet hard topic, how to design EJB (or in a broader sense, J2EE application) using design patterns. However, this book has a large intersection with Core J2EE Patterns, which not only includes more patterns (on all layers), but also is written in a more clear and comprehensive way.5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite technical book at the moment
The book is excellent. Gives you a very good insight not only on the role of EJBs in the modern J2EE architecture but the J2EE architecture itself. Terse but interesting and comprehensive.3-0 out of 5 stars unfortunate treatment of a relevant and interesting topic
First thing first, I'll come to the review of this book but before that some advice for you... if you are a J2EE architect/developer you'd need to use the contents of this book time and again, but this book is so badly organized and fluffy one can hardly survive the frustration of reading it twice, so make notes the first time you take the pain of going thru this book... following are mineRead more

2-0 out of 5 stars Now I know why the used CD only cost $0.99 :-)
I'm not impressed. The tone of the book is slightly pompous ... and the reader's style only makes this worse. The ideas were interesting, but nothing really revolutionary. I agree that with the authors ideas and his frustrations with Windows, and yes, speach recognition would be great.
