4-0 out of 5 stars great book with new ideas
Very original with more incites than any other book about online poker. There is no guarantees with poker as you may know, and even less of a guarantee with online poker. But there are new straties and ideas to consider in this book. If you can still play online poker i strongly recommened this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Packed with good tips
I give this book a thumbs up.I enjoy reading poker books, but many of them have the same advice.I found this book to have plenty of new, exciting strategies and tips.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for the absolute beginner.
Not much in there for anyone who has already migrated from the basics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For Absolute Beginners
The boom in online poker has brought with it an equal boom in how-to handbooks for internet players. The problem is that they're all pretty useless, for the very simple reason that:
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
The book contians standard information, is written somewhat blandly, and doesn't reveal anything the myriad other poker books have already covered.
5-0 out of 5 stars good book, even better starting chart
Teaches the ins and outs of poker and will help any beginer improve his game. The flop chart is the best asset, follow it and it will help eliminate alot of beginer mistakes. not for advanced readers, but if you are an advanced player Middle limit poker by ciaffane is the best book out i feel for the advanced. This book and the ciafane book are the only two poker books you need if you are beginer or play poker at all. Has turned around my bottom line dramatically ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated but useful in some ways
This book is not even in print anymore. There are three expansion packs out now. This book only covers the first one (Rise of the Zilart) and does not cover Chains of Promathia or Treasures of Aht Urghan at all.It is useful to newbs who are trying to find their way around the game, but there is nothing in this book that cannot be found on the internet if you just search for it. There are numerous sites that contain much more useful information (Such as allakhazam) but the problem with them is that the way this game is written, you cannot Alt-tab out of it to view another web page. Once you are in the game, you have to exit it to access any other programs on your pc (I play pc version exclusively....this doesn't apply to PS2 or X-Box players).
4-0 out of 5 stars there is an updated verison
because online games such as these change on a regular basis, this particular book is out of date as a newer version has been issued. also since there is another expansion for teh final fantasy 11 game called Chains of Permathia, another version, probably called fall 2004 will probably be released soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Shipped With The Game. . .
This guide is nothing more than a decent instruction manual for FFXI. The idea was good and if you started playing the game, let's say, back when it was first released in Japan, this so-called guide may have been helpful. But times change and so do MMORPG's. Don't get this guide unless you have a time machine so you can go back to when it would have been useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a book by an economist has no right to be this readable!
a fascinating look into the "big picture" of online gaming worlds. as a WoW player, it made me think a great deal about how the game is actually structured as a society, and how economics can explain this structure. The book is a bit more speculative when it verges outside of the concerns of economics into politics but this doesn't detract. Castronova's an engaging writer and not at all afflicted with "academese"

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of food for thought
Edward Castronova raises a lot of interesting issues surrounding online synthetic worlds, including topics like "Why hasn't a virtual government spontaneously arisen in online games?"He also lays out a very clear primer on synthetic world technology -- especially for the skeptical person who might typically dismiss online virtual worlds as a "mere game."
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a revelation
I read this book, not having much experience in virtual gaming, and found this book to be quie a revelation. There's so much going on in this world behind the scenes that it's scary and fascinating at the same time. I recommend this book for anyone who is already into this sort of thing, as well as for those who are curious about what computer technology is doing to change the way we live. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No such thing as ethical hacking
Face it, whether you're a white hat or a black hat - hacking is hacking.Alas, the term "ethical hacker" is merely a way for those breaking the law to rationalize their behavior.Littman did a great job of exposing this great debate in the book.In the field of information security, Mitnick is known to all of us as the king of social engineering.Let's be completely honest (even Mitnick and Littman exposed this in the book)... Kevin is not good at hacking but rather at exploiting the human factor. That is - humans are the weakest link in this whole information security thing - not the systems themselves. You want to design a secure system? - educate your users, administrators, managers and executives on how to be wise and vigilant and adhere to a sound security policy.
3-0 out of 5 stars This is a book about lifestyle, not technology
If you're interested in the technical side of Mitnick's computer vandalism, you won't find it here. You will, however, get a glimpse into his personality and lifestyle, as well as an idea into those of other famous computer criminals of the '90s.3-0 out of 5 stars Better than similar books, not great
I wish this book had been focused on the media coverage of "hackers." The book does expose how tech companies, and the media, especially Markoff from the NY Times, exploited Mitnik and his story. It also shows the incompetance of the FBI and other agencies in dealing with Mitnik, trying to make him an example for others and nearly making him a martyr instead. This story has no heroes, and its painfully noticeable that even the author is milking the "hacker" phenomenon for what its worth. It is the pathetic world of a computer prankster, his malicious "friends" and a host of others determined to pad their resumes with Mitnik's misery. "The Watchman" was more informative and satisfying, however this is the most fair and balanced treatment of Mitnick's story I've read. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Tries hard but ultimately a let down
I purchased this book wanting a reference for some help - since the game is primarily learn as you go.The book has a lot of information for the very, very beginner player but quickly runs out of any real kind of help. After about 2 hours the book is completely played out. There really isn't any serious help for experienced players.3-0 out of 5 stars Good for starting
Hi, I just got everquest online adventures and the online adapter so I figured it would'nt hurt to get this guide along with it.Well the guide is ok.. I mean by ok that it is only average. The guide tells you were to go for the first 5 quest and after that you better start shouting what is the quest for your level. Also it only gives abilty list for up to levels 20.This guide is good but not worth your money. Please dont be stupid and waste your money on a average guide like me. If anyone does need help with it look me up im in marr's fist server under the name gamukaz on a troll warrior.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book but lacking
Just got this Today.Well put together, Excellent images, good for starting out for the first 7 lvls of any character with quests and tips - then it's lacking of anything else.Lists the spells for the first 20 lvls of every charater.A mixed help, if you've played the PC version, the beta version or have experience with similar games this guide is going to be a waste of money to you.Sorry.Don't let this reveiw stop you from buying the game though, Buy the game, play the game, live the game, the best thing to comebefore the release of Final Fantasy X1 Online. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I didn't think much of this book when I borrowed it from a friend, but after a few pages I had changed my mind. It's a great book that will teach you to become a very good poker player.

1-0 out of 5 stars YOU WILL NOT BETTER YOUR GAME WITH THIS BOOK
First off this is not a 'WINNING AT INTERNET POKER' book...it is a 'EXPLANATION OF INTERNET POKER'. I bought this book hoping to learn something. The first (and I am not exaggerating this) 2/3 of the book has nothing to do with actual poker playing.Throughout those chapters they discuss how to use your computer to choose and download a poker program.I saw that they had a chapter on tournaments. All they do is simply explain the enviroment of the tourney (i.e. how many people are in certain tournaments, how much you have to pay to get into them...)You will not learn any actual strategies or what to do in certain situations.I recommend buying this book if you have never in your life played any poker over the internet. If you saw the world series of poker on your TV and thought to yourself 'hey maybe i can play online' then right at that point this book wouldn't be the worst idea.Let me take an exerpt from the book...page 18 5th paragraph..."If your screen is kind of fuzzy, and you don't normally stare at it for excessive periods of time, you may want to consider upgrading to a new monitor. Gawking at fuzzy images for hours at a time is draining,"...
5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for two beginners
I met one of the authors at a dinner, and he was so articulate and enthusiastic about online poker that I became interested in it-although before that, I had never once thought about online poker in my life (seriously).Later I mentioned the conversation to my 77-year-old dad who had been playing "some" online bridge when he wasn't crashing AOL, and he decided to try it. Well, long story short: while I got this book to see what I've been missing all this time, and read it just for fun (and it was fun, too, written with a sense of humor, and full of information), my dad was getting extremely frustrated and starting to hate the whole idea. After hearing him grumble more times than I could count, I went over to his house, sat down with him, and-completely based on what I'd read in this book-got him up and playing comfortably on a site in about an hour and half.(While reassuring my mom over my shoulder at the same time...) He's been playing ever since, but I'm still too chicken, having played a lot more Yahtzee than poker growing up. Anyway, the book was very helpful for two beginners: a non-poker-playing, computer-confident woman and her un-computer-savvy father who's been playing cards for more than six decades. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Reconsider...
....will the reading of this book improve your game, personally as a semi Professional player that has participated in the WSOP, I would urge all new players to start off just playing for play money. To improve your tournament play you should play freerolls. If you find yourself, hitting a place, then it is time to play for real money online, not before.
1-0 out of 5 stars truly Disappointed!
if you are a Mac comuter user or do not have access to a PC, don't get this book!
1-0 out of 5 stars For Rank Beginners Only
This book may be useful for someone that has absolutely no experience with online poker but in no way does the book seriously address how to "beat online poker games."It briefly discusses the rules of the most popular poker games and the mechanics of online play. The book is more concerned with discussing table etiquette than poker strategy. The title is very misleading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Your Skills With These Hacker Puzzles
Hacker's Challenge 2 is a sort of practical exam for the Hacking Exposed series. Hacker's Challenge was a terrific book for putting some incident response and forensic skills to use and practicing for the real thing. Hacker's Challenge 2 continues the tradition and should be a must read for anyone who works with network security and incident response. The style of the challenges is fairly entertaining and the plots are so engaging you may not want to put the book down. Its like a best-selling mystery novel for network security techies. It may not affect the quality of the book overall, but I preferred having the authors of the individual challenges identified as they were in Hacker's Challenge. However, you should definitely buy this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
Besides being very entertaining this book offers a great deal of knowledge. If you are able to recognize all the concepts inside, it will serve as a perfect reference and starting point book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the 1st...
Mike Schiffman has always been a really funny guy (see what he's written in phrack loopback for examples) so I was really dissappointed with the lack of humour in the first volume of the Hackers Challenge series. That has gotten better in the second volume. There is a lot more humor in this one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Pictures!
This is a very professionally done book on how to build your own computer. The pictures alone make it one of my favorite books. The detail is just right for anyone with some computer knowledge. The only knock is the fine print on the glossy photo pages can be a bit hard to read with tired eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book shipment
The book I ordered was in better than advertised condition. Shipment was very fast. Would order from again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Your PC To The Next Level!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute waste of money
I bought this guide after just 3 days of game play as there seems to be a derth of easy-to-access information in-game. This 'guide' is merely a series of data copied from the game screens and a number of screen shots. You don;t even get to enjoy the pictures in color - this book is entirely black and white on low quality paper.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, a tad outdated
I bought this strategy guide with the game when I bought it, and as soon as I installed the game I noticed the book was outdated. Most of the informaton has probably been outdated since the game was shipped, or shortly thereafter, although the historical stories are very interesting.1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOU'RE MONEY ON THIS TITLE
i bought this book after playing this excellent game for only 2 weeks. the information contained within it was useless to even at this early stage of gameplay. you will be much better off saving your money and reading the posts in the many player support forums on various websites. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Well, It is better than the game manual...
While some things are hit or miss, this book misses much more than a strategey guide should.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference for General Information
After purchasing the mammoth book, I was curious that it had such a poor review previously. In looking at it myself and using it during gameplay for a few weeks, I have found it to be a useful quick reference guide. Some of the features include:1-0 out of 5 stars An innacurate, poorly organzied waste of money and space!!
What happens when you make as strategy guide written by a bunch of people who have never played the game? You get this useless waste of paper. It's, beyond doubt, the WORST strategy guide I've ever purchased.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very narrow target market-- and it's probably not you.
Marty Cortinas, Beat the Odds: The Smart Player's Guide to Online Poker (Peachpit Press, 2006)
1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Except for a very brief list of on-line poker sites (and their structure differences) and a warning about cheaters that you can't do anything about, this book offers nothing that even a brand new player doesn't already know about poker. There is nothing about how to play poker, nothing about how to play poker on-line, nothing about on-line strategy, on-line players, no tips, no hints, nothing about odds or how to beat them - nothing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, still nice for experienced players
Scott Jenning does a great job of covering the basics of MMOGs, introducing the reader to a wide array of topics: Class role, group teamwork, endgame play styles, professions, and etiquette.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real Good Buy
I've been Playin DAoC for about 4 months when I bought this book. A friend who has been playing for 3 years got me into it. This book answered showed me alot about these kind of games that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. For just coming into the game, this was a real useful tool in getting me playing and understanding the game better. I now kill Hibs and Mids alot more effectivly.

4-0 out of 5 stars interact with many other humans
One of the biggest themes in computer gaming has been the rise of massive multiplayer games. Jennings takes you, the uninitiated, on an easy tour of these games. He shows that the rich interactivity with human players is the attraction. As contrasted to playing a game against purely software opponents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those interested in the Truth of Internet Gambling

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little useful information!
Never really explains the rouge casinos. How to avoid them. So many people are traped by them. Also the information that is contained in this book is not all that current. My advice is look carefully and beware when you open up an online gambling account. The author does not provide you with much help in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better information is better than none at all
While I agree with the first reviewer that yes online gambling is illegal(for now), Let's be for real! It's not going to go away! People are still going to gamble online, & it's not going to make the BM casino go belly-up.And online poker is just gettingbigger & bigger, thanks to poker tournaments shown on ESPN & a whole lot of cable shows. With that said, the author explains all of these factors. The pros & cons of online gambling. How the real casinos can benefit from online casinos, plus he explains to you how to get online & play in them & see if they are legit or not. What bad sites to watch out for, & how not to be taken by them. At least the author gives you the sense that IF you are going to do this that you're not going in there flying blind for the first time & not know the risks. You CAN make money in online casinos, you just have to watch yourself. This is a helpful book on this subject, & can make you if a not better online player, at least a prepaired one. Another good gambling series from this author. Good Luck. ... Read more
