5-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book
I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical,Funny,To the Point.
After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.

This is not the usual boring computer book. Just the opposite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Reference
Large books, by their very nature, can have good points and bad points. After all, if you have a couple or several hundred pages worth of material, you are bound to get some things right and some things wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it is supposed to be ..
Great little reference book.It is not intended to be a learning tool.If you want that, try the Head First book on HTML/XHTML/CSS that O'Reilly also publishes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works like expected.
I've used this pocket reference for a long time now and I love it. It's a great way to refresh your memory when you can't seem to remember a property and/or its value.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better off researching the Internet for free
This book makes a lot of assumptions.Such as, you'll be using ZAP channels. If you are using SIP and/or IAX only, you'll quickly find yourself lost trying to follow the examples since a critical part of the setup is done in zapata.conf (i.e. a useless file for SIP/IAX only deployments). If you aren't using ZAP and you skip that part of the chapter (like I did), you'll pull out hair you didn't know you had trying to get the example configs to work.Likewise, the example builds out even further in the next chapter about extensions.conf, riddled with more ZAP configuration with a smattering of SIP examples. And if you are looking for IAX config examples you can forget it.Indeed it seems that SIP and IAX were after thoughts in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The title of the book is slightly understated
I bought this book because I thought that having a small PBX-type system for my home/office would allow me to route faxes to my fax machine, provide voicemail to replace the limited answering machine, and auto attendant menus to route calls to 1 of 3 extensions that I would be able to configure. I saw a solution that would divide business and personal calls and also filter and perhaps stop once and for all those evil telemarketing calls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Asterisk
Asterisk IS the future of telephony. I have been wanting to dive into the Asterisk world for over a year now, but never had the time until now. I have very limited telephony experience, and what little I know is from working on an old AT&T definity system, in a fairly passive role i.e. watching someone else do all the really cool stuff. Unfortunately, peons like myself weren't allowed to muck around on the PBX's. Lucky for me, Asterisk doesn't care who you are, you are encouraged to muck, and this book is an excellent place to begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEN FORTA IS AMAZING
This man is amazing. I can feel his passion for ColdFusion when I read the book. I also have his Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes and it's the same way. I have a library of technical books, mostly software and programming language books but I don't have any that are as easy to understand and as fun to follow as the Forta books. Lastly, I love reading classical literature as well. Some of my favorites are Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost (Tom Sawyer, Edgar Allen Poe, Dostoevsky...). I rank this ColdFusion book as one of the best pieces of literature that I've ever read. That's how good it is to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
This is the first book that I bought to start learning Cold Fusion(along with the Advanced Development), and it is by far one of the easiest books to read and make use of.Everything is written clearly, great explanations, great code samples each with tons of comments.Must read for any soon to be or already a CF developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first time I ever enjoyed writing a data-driven site.
I have been designing web sites for over ten years, but working with data-base driven sites has always been a major pain in the butt. Not until I stumbled onto this program and this book. WOW - Should cover my feelings on this topic. Talk about simple and POWERFUL. Imagine this - instead of writing over 200 lines of HTML, writing 40 lines of Coldfusion, operating an entire site from one page and from a 170 pages down to 9 (no joke). If you're using MS Access or MySQL, it makes no difference, instant and simple. In less then a week I had the site up and running - bug free. Finding a proper hosting company that runs Coldfusion is somewhat of a pain, but it is completely worth it. If you have never made a data-driven site before, this will make the experience extremely pleasant and if you have written many, this will make you wish you knew about this before.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor!!
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad
I got this book with a little over 1.5 years of exchange experience and I know quite a bit but thought i could learn alot more and certify in it.Well this book did help me the 2nd time through reading it.The biggest help really was the practice exams.I took the study exams and learned more that way then with reading.I would recommend this book only to those that actually understand Windows 2003, 2000 and NT both directory structure and network structure. There is alot of networking involved such as firewalls and opening ports.Overall it is a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read "a different"book before this one.
Otherwise it might be somehow confusing. This book is a must for professionals as another reviewer stated but it is not very suitable as the first book on UMTS technologies. This book serves best as supplementary reading. For example new-beginner readers might get confused talkink about SIP at the first chapter before explaining W-CDMA and core-network layout. Anyway, this book contains wealth of information on UMTS technologies and warmly recommended for serious readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of standards, if you need them
If you like to read standards or have to in the course of your work, this book offers a useful and succinct compilation. Other than that, there is nothing to recommend this book as it does not help improve your understanding. Then again, this is not the kind of book which people who do not have to work with standards will want to read.5-0 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, must for pros
This book delivers exactly what it promises: a profound, compact and clear description of WCDMA for UMTS. The reader is expected to understand quite advanced concepts of mobile communications, hence it is not a good book for managers who want to know what 3G is all about nor for undergraduate students who want to learn cellular system basics. It is an excellent book for experienced network planners, protocol designers or research engineers, for example, who want to move from 2G to 3G. Simple test: if you don't know what are Erlang-B, orthogonal codes or layered protocol architecture, you want to study them first from another book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars it's a little much
For learning how to program from scratch, i wouldn't recommend this book. It's to fast through javascript. Yet I haven't read all 1000 pages yet, that's what I've taken from it so far. Seems good for asp and stuff like that though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric
This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.
1-0 out of 5 stars Deitel Considered Dangerous
I was unfortunately subjected to the second edition of this book during my graduate studies at DTU. In my opinion there's only one good thing to say about this book, and that is that it's the only book I've seen where you get a comprehensive introduction to all of the techniques for developing and serving web-pages. Unfortunately, the authors are living in a Miocrosoft Internet Explorer only world, which especially is reflected in their chapters on (x)html and javascript. Problem is, no version of IE is actually capable of understanding xhtml, so what you are in fact taught is xhtml 1.0 served as text/html which is treated as hmtl 4.01 in all browsers. Even worse, the third edition has rewritten all the examples in xhmtl 1.1 which *should*not* be served as text/html. Even worse, the xhtml examples given will trigger an error in IE 6 that will get IE 6 to behave as IE 5.5 in quirks mode - inclusive the css box model error. As to the javascript examples, the book isn't teaching you the w3c DOM but only the IE DOM, thus all examples using eg document.all will possibly fail in some browsers. And document.write isn't allowed if you are serving your pages as application/xhmtl+xml. I'm considering this book dangerous because it doesn't teach you how to code according to the w3c standards but only according to the 'Microsoft standard' ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Tunnelvision
Using this book is like driving without peripheral vision - you can't take the slightest turn off the single path chosen by the authors. Sure, this book will walk you through making a stateless session bean and deploying it on JBoss. But what if you want to make a client? What if you want to use the Eclipse IDE provided by JBoss? Suddenly, you're left on your own. This book may be helpful to someone making a first pass through J2EE, but if you want to use JBoss for any practical purpose, this book is practically worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
As an employee of a company that develops web based applications, but not a software engineer in that company, Tom Marrs and Scott Davis's text does a terrific job in putting the disparate pieces that make up a J2EE application together.Their approach of incrementally adding the requisite technologies from each tier, as they carry through a single example, provides remarkable clarity to the discussions of each piece.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the "nuts and bolts" of a J2EE application. My only caveat is to make sure you read the README.txt file when you download the source code.If you've downloaded a JBoss version later than 4.0.1 (current is 4.0.4) then the code examples beginning in Chapter 5 won't work. The needed change, discussed in the README file, is simple, clearly indicated and works throughout the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guide to JBoss and J2EE
J2EE started out as a specification that left the implementation to each container vendor. It's readily apparent that two of the earliest vendors, WebSphere and WebLogic, implemented J2EE in vastly different ways. As a result, early books on J2EE or Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) frequently either avoided or severely limited the discussion of a specific server because the details were better referenced from server vendors' manuals. JBoss changed that picture. It is an open source Java-based application server which is freely downloadable, plus it is a certified J2EE server.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review
The first part of the book is very valuable. The patterns described are on average rather shallow and don't touch on the real issues. For the 'novice' however this is a very relevant book to read. I do advice to deepen understanding by looking at actual websites to see how leaders have implemented the different patterns. Much more to learn there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very handy reference book and checklist
While there are many books on the market that discuss patterns related to programming, architectural elements, etc., this is the first book I've seen that focuses on web patterns at the user interface level. The book is essentially an indexed, cross-referenced, best practices guide to building web pages that attract and keep customers. Or at least keep you from pissing them off. The authors have collected and summarized a great deal of HCI research (all listed in the resources section of the appendix) on web usability, so none of this stuff is made up--it's all based on time-proven, tested, and verified data about how people actually use the Internet (e.g., see Amazon, Yahoo!, Google, et. al.). A few of the patterns are no longer considered best practices, due to evolving standards (e.g., CSS) and increasing browser standards support. This is a very handy reference book, especially for an in-depth UI checklist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Design of Sites: Patterns, Principles...Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for compositors and digital artists
This book is a in depth study of the techniques and technologies involved in the art of compositing. Not sooo technical that no one will understand it, but technical enough that it even explains in detail the algorithms and math used for antialiasing, blurs, the transfer operators like multiply, screen overlay., etc... I am a professional cg artist and highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Great
I use Fusion 5 and this book has been of great help understanding not just how the different operators work within Fusion, but also, how a good composite has to be done. The final section shows different real world examples of compositions made for films like Titanic, an invaluable resource if you are a begginer and a point of reference if you have more experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars many problems for the student
This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.

This book is a great starter if you want to learn how to design web pages. While it's not a step-by-step page building guide, it's an excellent source of ideas, theories and practical "how-tos" that will definitely get you going in the right direction. If you're interested in building your own site, you could also be interested in hosting your site after it's built.Check out the "Complete Guide to Web Hosting" on amazon. It's a complete kit with all software and instructions that will let you host your site on your own PC for free.I highly recommend both of these titles together. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft is great with software but not with documentation
I ordered this book as well as Special Addition Using Ms FP 2003The only FP2003 book you'll ever need. This is the book to get!!The microsoft book does not really do a good job of fully explaining the topic. To me it was very confusing. The other book I just mentioned is 3 times as thick and goes from very basic to very advanced. So as you grow the book will be there for all the information.I will be returning this book and keeping the Special Addition.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 books on learning FrontPage 2003
I actually bought 3 books: Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Step-by-Step, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out, and Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003.
1-0 out of 5 stars Provides Only a Spefic Example Included on The CD
Does not provide directions for "Step-by-Step" creation of your own original web site. It continously refers to the example on the included CD so you recreate that website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Interaction Design
The majority of this book is from the thoughts and findings of other authors.Nothing orignal.Books is difficult to read and often does a poor job of explaining topics clearly.Currently using this book as a text book for a class and have to believe there is a better choice out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not great
I have used this text for a year and half, for three instances of the same course (upper division undergrad).Good: 1. Each chapter is about a week's work, so it fits the schedule nicely; 2. Each chapter has "activities", "summary", and "assignments" which I find very useful when making assignments; 3. Lots of illustrations; 4. Interviews with professionals in the field are added at the end of each chapter -- this adds another dimension to the "textbook" aspects of the book; 5. Cartoons here and there. Could be improved: the quality of some of the illustrations -- some of them are photos that are dark and hard to make out. Some look like they came from the 1950s -- I am not sure how that is possible in a book published in 2002, but that's what it looks like to me.Still, the text is "nicely illustrated".The thing that stops this from being a "great" text is the quality of the writing and presentation of ideas. The writing is too simplistic.A "great" text finds ways to express things in a succinct manner, summarizing key ideas.Instead, this book tends to be wordy in many places, and lacks an effective organization of ideas. Finally, the text is starting to appear "dated", but few textbooks can withstand the breakneck speed of change in this area. That said, no student has complained (to me) about the text (but neither have they praised it). And, I have not been able to find a better text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Course Text for HCI students
The breath and depth of this text truly embodies the necessary content for beginning HCI students in an undergraduate and graduate program. I've successfully used this text every semester with my students since its inception. The author's perspective of the discipline accurately reflects an increasing trend in HCI education that places less emphasis on computing and more on designing products to enhance human communication based on the social sciences. It is organized to provide an instructor a way to pick and choose selected chapters or proceed sequentially. Each chapter is multi-dimensional in its approach to provide an array of content that includes both theory and practice. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but impractical information
While covering a lot of infomration, this book still did not answer basic questions about how to use Sharepoint. It is geared more for the tech/programmer rather than the end-user.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on the subject.
After purchasing 6 others on the subject of Windows Sharepoint Services, I find that this has the best information on the broad subject of WSS.The book is not perfect but its a fairly easy read and the examples are some what real world. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Time or Money
I found some gems in this book but I don't recommend it. The authors should learn to write in English and the Publisher should learn the art of copy editing. Otherwise, this book could have worked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I purchased and read The Book of Postfix because I'm always interested in learning something new. This certainly is one hell of a book!
5-0 out of 5 stars This book has no equal.
If you can only afford one book on Postfix, make it this one.I already had Postfix, the Definitive guide (which is a very good book). However, this book will take you beyond simply getting Postfix up and running.
