2-0 out of 5 stars Almost teaches you what you need to know.
I bought this book mostly to learn how to customize Contact forms. This book gives you about half the info you need. Then you hit a brick wall.I spent hours searching newsgroups and web sites to fill in the other half. There are a few simple things the author could have added so the book was actually valuable instead of incredibly frustrating. For example, the book shows you how to customize a form.Great.But then the book neglects to tell you how to apply that form to existing Contacts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great in-depth info for a very under documented topic
Jason & Stacy have done a great job digging into the details of site definitions. You rarely find this level of depth in available resources, including in the WSS/SPS SDK or MSDN. Wish I had this a long time ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book so far on the topic...
While there are other books that have been published in the past year on the topic of SharePoint and customizations and what not, I would have to say that this book brings all the pieces together, gives the explanations to UI developers, administrators and developers that they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Book on SharePoint
Even though it is not a big book in pages, it is an excellent book in content! The core of the book focuses on creating site definitions; with many excellent examples and useful tips. Other topics covered include template construction, definitions for Lists and customization of themes and alerts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
I used this book to deploy Oracle 10g Applications through Oracle Developer Suite 10g and JDeveloper 10g. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the chapter. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Programming experience to use this book just a decent understanding of programming logic. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle 10g Applications as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the OracleDeveloper.
Great book.I've been waiting for this book to be release and I wasn't disappointed.Full of great information on how to put this great Oracle tool to work.Easy explanations and great examples will have you up and programming in no time. The authors real know their stuff.Great Job!If you use Oracle's application server, this book is a must have!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on 10AS with the web
This is a much-needed title and Chris Ostrowski has done an excellent job in covering all of the topical areas of 10gAS web development.

Editorial Review

Setting up a Web site ranks among the most deceptively simple tasks in all of computerdom. At the end of the day, you just edit documents (and who hasn't done that before?). Even HTML, the underlying language of Web pages, is pretty easy to understand. But once the creation process gets underway, it becomes apparent that HTML coding is tedious, and that page designers often spend hours figuring out tiny layout details. Adobe GoLive CS is meant to ease and automate the process of creating and maintaining sites, and Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Beginners
I am a technician by trade, but I am very new to the web building world. The last time I attempted to build a web page was when c-tags were in style. When I bought this book I knew almost nothing about GoLive CS.I have now completed most of the lessons in the book and I will say I was hard-pressedto find any errors.Trust me, I know error proned books (i.e.CCNA).This book is perfect for a beginner and will lead one by the hand. The lesson material on the CD uses good examples. The book is far from exhaustive, but it will get one started. There is a whole lot in GoLive that is left to explore. After reading the book I have been able to build a good sized web site with many pages, and with many different styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential tool to get started with GoLive
One thing GoLive is not and that is intuitive. This book starts you off with a hands on approach and after a time it starts to make sense. I used it methodically and did not find any mistakes mentioned in the other reviews - it helps to use one's head and guess where one overlooked, or mis-understood an instruction as the program is very fiddly. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good introduction to GoLive
***This review is for the Revised Edition*** (FYI, I use the Mac version) Firstly, I have completed the whole book and have NOT found it to filled with errors. There are a couple of areas (specifically I think it was 3) where I had to do a double take and make sure I was following the directions as I was supposed to. Some confusion comes in because the names of some of the palattes are very similar to the names of the work screens, so you need to pay attention if the directions say "Click on the navigation palatte" or "Click on the navigation screen." At a couple points in the tutorial, it got a bit confusing, however it was nothing I could not figure out with some careful reading. It is not a complete reference on GoLive, as I feel I just scratched the surface with the text so far. I would recomemend this book to others basically because there is no other text to learn from. However I would like a more complete exhaustive text that goes deeper into GoLive. One thing I do fault the book for is not having a brief chapter of summary actions like "To fix orphaned files...do the following.."and then list them. There is no summary page or chapter on commands, icons and what they mean. I find myself knowing what I want to do, however I have to look it up to find out detailed instructions on how to do it. Like I said, overall, not a bad book, especially because there isn't anything else out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Newbie thoughts on Flash@Work
Although I was new to the world of actionscripting when I purchased and read Flash@Work for the first time, I rather enjoyed the read and its logical approach to scripting. In particular it gave me a solid starting point regarding how to plan and build real world projects which I am still learning.Flash@Work introduced me to the concept of modular design and beginning with the end in mind which is invaluable with flash projects.Overall, I recommend Flash@Work however, I suggest you pick a primer on actionscript first before digging into this book.Concepts and project are well explained and most importantly projects are practical in scope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zero to Sixty in no time
If you are looking for a book that provides easy to customize Flash solutions, this is it.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious
If you are interested in creating a professional quality web site(s) with Flash 8, get a grip on yourself and understand it is not simple. Flash 8 is an intense program for serious people. This book is a great start, in what will be a long road of learning. If you are a beginner and want to learn "programming" the first 2/3 of his book "ActionScripting in Flash MX" will get you going. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful info but must wade through chatty kathy style
I need to learn Exchange Fast. Too many paragraphs seem to open or be sprinkled with dialog that doesn't pass on substantive information. For instance, "If you are like me, you are saying to yourself...'self..."or "One of the most discouraging things is for a user to call up and say they can't reach domain xyz." Multiply this by 300 and 30% of the book is fluff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning and Reference Book!
This is a great book for learning the guts of Exchange 2003.Too many of the books of today are designed to help you pass a test and learn items related to the test.Well, this is not that book, fortunately. However, the knowledge in the book will help significantly when it comes test time.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too general to be as helpful as could be possible
I agree with another reviewer that there is not enough of how to do the tasks in question. There is a great deal of 'skimming' subjects without explanation leaving the reader to find out from other sources. For example, in Chapter 1, there are numererous mentions of HTTP/DAV and DAVEx (referring to the davex (DLL that handles communications between the Exchange back-end server and IIS) but there is no explanation as to what it does or how it works.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not a tutorial.
This book is not a tutorial on Apache. Forget about this book if you're seeking to implement the ubiquitous LAMP (Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP) combination. Perhaps you wish to complement your pursuit of a computer science degree with some resume enhancing practical skills. Or perhaps you're a seeking some IT certifications, or perhaps you're a hobbyist web developer - in all cases this book contains nothing that couldn't be freely found on an internet search engine. Most of the book's chapters consist of a series of Apache's features with each followed by a cryptic discussion that doesn't actually teach you anything. So unless you're a Apache expert looking for a handy reference to keep close at hand then please buy something else. Like a book that actually does the job of teaching you to do something with Apache.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Game theory and design? This is the book you've been looking for!
You're getting it straight from the horse's mouth since this book is written by the grandfather of the modern MMORPG.
5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to the philosophyand strategy of designing virtual worlds
To begin with, this book is not a programming book. There is no code, no discussion of VRML, MPEG-4, or X3D. Instead, this book stands back and takes a "big picture" look at the design of a virtual world from the viewpoint of systems engineering, social engineering, philosophy, history, and psychology. Ethical considerations are even tossed in for good measure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious book on Serious fun
I would have to say that Dr. Bartle's book on game design is one book on a tiny bookshelf about the width of a loaf of bread that is worth reading - and this one is worth more than the rest of the shelf combined.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Atlas Reference
This book contains a good balance of information regarding the three main ways to program Atlas: JavaScript, AtlasScript, and server controls. Most Atlas-related articles and books tend to focus on one or two of those methods, because that's what the author is comfortable with, but Foundations of Atlas nicely covers all three.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stop your whining!
I've been seeing a lot of bad reviews for this book since (apparently) there are a lot of errors in the code.I suppose if your skills are lacking and you need to have a book spoon-feed you in order to learn a new technology, then this book probably is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I use this book as a day-to-day HLSL reference, it's so much quicker and more efficient than finding information online...
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent !!!
The book starts with short introduction and pipeline overview giving an overall picture of how vertex and pixel shaders interact, and how data flows between them and the hardware. Next, it introduces DirectX High-Level Shading Language (HLSL) and Microsoft's Effect Files Framework. Then author starts teaching you how to implement basic lightning models (Lambert, Phong, Blinn-Phong) and advanced ones (Cook-Torrance, Oren-Nayar, Ward, Ashikhmin-Shirley). The book also covers more advanced topics (Environment Cube Mapping, Reflection and Refraction, Projective Texture Mapping, Shadow Mapping, Shadow Volumes, Geometry Images) and cutting-edge techniques like Displacement Mapping, High Dynamic Range Lighting or Parallax Mapping. The author shows common problems arising during implementation of presented techniques and explains how to deal with them. Each chapter comes with a few example programs which are as simple as possible. You will also learn from this book how to optimize your shaders for different shader models.
5-0 out of 5 stars Has EVERYTHING about DirectX 9 shaders
This is a book that gets straight to the point. It covers a wide variety of rendering topics relevant to vertex and pixel shader programming, all with clear example code. The topics are covered in enough detail for the reader to create their own great 3D effects. The introductory sections are well structured and serve as a valuable reference for HLSL and shader assembly. On top of all of this, the coverage of new shader models vs_3_0 and ps_3_0 is the best I've seen.Five stars! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding, uniquely useful book
Because web sites are made with computers, somehow it seems that the vast majority of authors of "how to make a web site" books focus almost entirely on the technical aspects, as somehow devoid of relation to the practical art of making sites that work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Web Design guide
Robin Williams does an excellent job of providing clear suggestions, good rationales, and lots of examples to make her point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worn this one out
Several years ago I met with the main designer at company that created the web pages for several pharmaceutical distributors in Canada. At the time, I was well versed in creating web pages using several of the professional programs including Dreamweaver, as well as writing code. The designer, however, said that they did all of their designing in Photoshop and then used a slicing technique in ImageReady before editing the site in Dreamweaver.I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of creating web pages that way, so I went home and began looking through all of my web designing books to see if I could find a description of the technique.Yes, I found it in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very In-Depth, Not a lot of code examples
I went out and purchased this book based on some good reviews here at Amazon. I was really unimpressed with it. It is much less a primer on how to program "AI" types of apps with .NET, and much more a manual of how to use Microsoft applications like their speech services and data mining.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great primer book on Microsoft technologies for Intelligent Apps
Building Intelligent .NET Applications is an excellent primer book into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the business world, specifically related to Microsoft technologies.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
I recently purchased this book on Amazon. As an experienced .NET software developer, I am always keen on books that will expand my knowledge base in this area, and AI has been a particular interest of mine lately.Having read through much of the book, I have found it very disappointing.I would sum it up as a very shallow introduction to AI topics (often referred to as "Narrow AI") such as Data Mining. This book is more a manual on how to use Microsoft technologies, and does not include anywhere near the depth or practical examples needed on the subjects presented.I have personally found better info online. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Refernce book
Good reference book.It provids concepts and material important for graduate studies and industry. I recommand it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Little bit disappoint
This has many typos, which can be frustrating in following the context. And I found out that the typos are different to other 2nd editions. Little bit disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very technical book
I recommend this book for anyone pursuing a Certification like CWNA, CWNP or other wireless certifications. The technical concepts which are at the core of design, implementation, research, and invention of wireless communication systems are presented in an order that is conducive to understanding the general concepts, as well as those specific to current and evolving wireless communication systems and standards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flex
I really enjoy reading this book, in particular the chapters about J2EE and Flex.Help me understand the design patterns and motivations behind the cairngorm framework too and more importantly how to architect Flex applications.Looking forward to reading the updated version, following the new Flex 2.0.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Book with examples step-by-step of applications created in FLEX 1.0. It for installation configurations and other Flex's basic subjects. It is a book for intermediary and advanced users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Separating concerns
Flex 2.0 has been released, but I still find this book (Flex 1.0) an invaluable resource in developing rich client applications. There's a quick 30 page intro to Flex, and then the fun starts. You start at the Presentation tier, working your way through to the Business tier and then finally to the Integration tier of rich internet applications. This is best practice in motion. To find the latest news and releases on Adobe Flex, go [...] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The JUNOS Cookbook is a real joy
Aviva's flair for concise explanation makes this book a real joy. It's rare that I read just one recipe. If you want a concentrated dose of JUNOS that's sweet and easy to swallow, then get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for even JUNOS experts
Even though you've been configuring or operating Juniper routers for long time and you think you are familiar enough with JUNOS, you'll still learn something you don't know from this book; the "Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also" structure helps to quickly find and read the exact information you need and nothing more, if you don't need to, just like you would use a standard dictionary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Cheerleading, Limited Sport
As one would expect, there's plenty of cut-and-paste terminology and mathematics from current academic engineering topics. So there's a lot of cheerleading. But missed is the opportunity to show in depth how useful theory (Signals & Systems, Control, you name it) can be in solving Wireless/Digital Communication problems. So she honestly failed to capture the actual sport of Communication theory (Wireless, Digital, or Otherwise).

5-0 out of 5 stars An appreciation for comprehensive book
The books presents a comprehensive description of wireless communication systems supported with gamut of examples from the world around us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book
In this book, the author merges her deep knowledge of the field of wireless communication with her passion of transmitting her knowledge to others. The evident didactic skills of the author are put into service to explain in a clear, profound and accurate way not only the fundamentals of wireless communication systems, but also some of the most recent development in the field, such as MIMO, adaptive modulation, equalization, multicarrier and ad hoc networks, in such a way that the reader will soon find himself immersed in the excitement of this up-to-date knowledge. The book also includes the information theory point of view of both single user and multiuser wireless networks, which are usually omitted in other textbooks in the field.Students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering will find in the first six chapters a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals in the subject, saving a lot of time, as very few books treat the fundamentals in such a clear and, at the same time, deep way. Students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the area will find an indispensable reference. For practicing engineers, this book will provide the design tools of modern wireless networks. This book will shortly become a classic. It is simply, an excellent job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for a great product
Nagios is an open-source software tool that constantly monitors your system and provides feedback when it appears that there may be a problem.Nagios is a Linux based product that allows the administrator to track a wide variety of hosts, systems, services, and just about anything else they would want to know about.Completely configurable, the administrator sets thresholds and the system creates and alert any time this threshold is met.The beauty of this sort of system is that it allows the administrator to be notified of potential problems before they become major problems.
