4-0 out of 5 stars FrameMaker 7 Classroom in a Book
This book is essentially an excellent learning book for FrameMaker. It covers most of unstructered FrameMaker's features. Adobe should be ashamed for publishing their Classroom in a book series with perfect binding. No learning product should be perfect bound because the book does not stay open to the page you need unless you destroy the binding.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not that bad a book
I don't know why all these reviewers hate the book. Granted the instructions to install the fonts were wrong and sometimes the fonts the lessons require aren't there, but I can live with that. The instructions are right and the lessons work. Yes I wish it was in color, but I can live with B&W too. I've done eleven lessons and have enjoyed the book very much. I love the power of FrameMaker and think the book is good. I think Adobe/Peachpit press has gotten its act together since these reviews were written. The book is worth getting now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great writing motivator, and a cockle-warming read!
What I most love about this book -- aside from the writing, which is toothsome and smart, and aside from the breadth and creativity of the suggestions that the author, Margaret Mason, comes up with -- is that it's also a tender love letter to blogs themselves. Many of the Ideas featured in this book offer examples from actual bloggers, from well-known cewebrities to people I have never clicked on before. And these bloggers that the Maggie has currated together, they're doing such wonderful things. Their writing, photos, films, drawings, childhood mementos ... it's all so inspired and inventively assembled. This book is the perfect reminder that good people are out there doing great things, and that you, too, might even be able to join them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book, for newbies or veterans alike
I have maintained my blog at [...] for over four years now, so I can tell you it doesn't matter if you've been a blogger for a while: you will find this book useful. It should be noted, like other reviewers have pointed out, that it's not just about blogging (though some of the tips offered pretty much are ideal for a blog as a content vehicle). The book offers the reader 100 ideas to avoid "me-too syndrome" as the author puts it. The result, cleverly conveyed by the title, is broken down into sections, from ideas that will take the blogger fifteen minutes to write about, all the way to involved projects that will take time to gather and publish.
5-0 out of 5 stars New blogger finds much needed help
I am fairly new to the whole blogging thing, so this book couldn't have come at a better time. It's an easy and fun read and has convinced me to let down my guard a bit, not to mention provided me with some great leads.I would recommend this book to anyone -- seasoned blogger or novice like me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS2 RAW
I must admit, I took a long time switching to digital for photo work, and then I thought I was set. It appears that not only do a I have to master the camera for settings, but in those instances where the money talks, I have to learn about RAW format rather than the high res JPG format I thought was dealing me a good deal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too much graphic art - too little substance
In the field of digital photography, capturing and developing "RAW" files is a hot topic, largely because this is usually the route to the highest image quality attainable. The subject can be a bit opaque because each manufacturer mechanizes in-camera RAW files differently. Also, there are many different RAW converters (software packages for developing the RAW files into optimized images) from both the camera manufacturers and third parties. One of the most popular RAW converters is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), originally released by Adobe as a plug-in for Photoshop 7 and Photoshop Elements, and now integrated into both products.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to RAW
I bought this book after reading the other 5-star reviews, so I thought Wow! This must be it! Well, it's almost 'it'. The book gives a well-written and useful explanation of what RAW is all about, and also shows some good examples of what you can do with RAW. It also helps you to decide when to shoot in RAW or when you'd better just switch to JPG.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is worthless
I've had numerous experiences with William Stallings networking books, and all of them are bad.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Clear, well-organized, and good level of detail.I was frustrated that so many data networking books do not adequately cover wireless, and this does that perfectly. There is even a website with PowerPoint presentations and pdf files of images from the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.
First of all, this is a high quality book. Hardcover and fine paper makes it a pleasure to handle. The chapters are well organized into four parts, from Technical Background to Wireless Lans.Beware however, that this is a quite theoretical book. If you are looking for a fast approach to WLAN technologies, perhaps you should try simpler books like O'REILLY's 'Wireless Community Networks'.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical SOA Book
This is one of the main books I recommend to clients on SOA and Web Services. Several parts of the book that stand out from what I have seen in the rest of the field including the section on Advanced Messaging and Transactions. The work is particularly strong in the "why are we here and how did we get here" with regard to web service evolving from various technologies like MQ, Tx systems, and mainframes, and describes where Web services has advantages and disadvantages over those technologies in a non-religious format. In Chapter 3, for example, MQ, CORBA, and XML web Services are compared across a set of criteria including: service contracts, data management, registration and discovery, security, interaction patterns, communication, and QoS. These objective analyses are some of the most valuable resources in the book, because when looking at Web Services' integration it helps the architect see where the strengthes and weaknesses lie.
5-0 out of 5 stars A word of reason in the super-hyped world of SOA
Every so often a known concept is re-invented and served with a new garnish on a new plate. The environment of sudden public attention fertilized with ignorance breeds enormous hype, which in turn makes air so thick that you hardly can hear the voice of reason. This environment morphs the concept into something so vague and different from the original that only sales people feel comfortable talking about it. I believe this has happened to the SOA concept.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will save you a lot of time
This book is really good at distilling the web services standards down to the core essentials - what are the most important things to know and more importantly, where the specifications still have room for improvement. So if you would prefer to save yourself a lot of time wading through specs in order to be able to hold your own in front of the whiteboard (or keyboard) there is no better book than this. What I like most about Eric's books is they are always written in a very honest and straightforward manner and they are obviously informed by years of real world experience - in other words basically the opposite of a David Linthicum book. ... This is the best book I have ever read on Wireless.I have thoroughly enjoyed the book. The authors ability to take complex information and break it down to a more understandable level.I have read the book a couple of times and each time I pick up something new or I understand something a little better than I did before.I highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in learning more about Wirless.I also recommend this book to all teachers that are interested in teaching a Wireless class.Teachers, you want find a better book that delivers this much information about Wireless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
Being an IT professional, I have looked for some time for an easy-to-understand book on the various wireless technologies. I just came upon this book a very short while ago and am amazed! This book presents the major wireless topics in a clear manner. It also covers the major emerging wireless technlogies like WAP, Bluetooth, etc. And, it even provides some informative exercises to get the knoweledge down "pat". I have read many books lately, but this one is a real "keeper" (and I am generally hard to please). ... Read more

Purchasing Larry Ullman's book is as good as signing up for any online course in PHP.The exercises in the book are perfectly explained in simple language; I'm 1/3 through, and NOTHING has confused me yet.Any questions that are not answered in the text can be addressed in the online forum which is frequented by the author. I won't hesitate to buy any of Larry's other titles.

Samba, the Server Message Block (SMB) server software that makes it relatively easy to integrate Unix or Linux servers into networks of Microsoft Windows workstations, has to date been mostly explained as an afterthought. Samba is so cool! And this book is so perfect in getting you set up so that you can use it. I have slowly been introducing a Unix (freebsd) system into our office network (all Windows). I had NO idea how to set up Samba or anything.
3-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete and No longer applicable
This book covers the older SAMBA 2.0 which has a set of solutions for 10-year old Windows NT domain era of obsoleted technologies. There is some small mention of SAMBA 3.0 in the later edition, but it is still 98% SAMBA 2.0 based, which is far too overdocumented.
4-0 out of 5 stars More than you wanted to read, more than you wanted to know
Oh my goodness this book is detailed. This is truly a case of teaching a man to fish rather than feeding him. This book covers everything in grizzly detail. If you're not prepared to sit down and chew your way to being a Samba guru then get something else. This book is a long and I must admit a dry read but it's very powerful. It doesn't make light of the topic and it takes a while to read but like anything of value it's worth the effort. Excellent book, if you're using Samba in an office environment you need this book, you'll find out how to do all kinds of things you only dreamed of. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good SNMP coverage, but I needed a little more help
Essential SNMP, 2nd Ed (ES2E) fills a gap in being a modern book about an important management protocol.SNMP is used extensively by network management stations (NMS) like Nagios, which is now the subject of two independent books.E2SE does a good job covering SNMP issues important to administrators and NMS users. However, the book's organization and subject matter could be improved in the 3rd edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!
Are you a system or network administrator who could benefit from using SNMP to manage your equipment, but have little or no experience with SNMP or SNMP applications? If you are, this book is for you. Authors Douglas Mauro and Kevin Schmidt, have written an outstanding 2nd edition of a book that demystifies SNMP and makes it more accessible to a wider range of users.

This is an extremely literate and somewhat scholarly look at the past, present, and future of the emerging art form of interactive narrative, where storytelling, visual imagery, and reader interaction meet. 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but no holy grail
Pause & Effect is a beautiful book. Definitely the most visual work on the subject of interactive narrative I have ever encountered. From its almost baroque design it immediately becomes clear that Meadows has a multidisciplinary background that among other things has seen him working as a game-designer, photographer, portrait painter and writer. Clearly, this multifaceted approach is the book biggest asset, as Meadows, rightly so, positions interactive narrative on the intersection of literature, visual art and interaction design. In his view, a successful interactive narrative finds a way to transfer some of the traditional control of the author over the story to the reader who must be able to "affect, choose or change the plot". Control over the perspective and time are important to evolve normal stories with its fixed chains of cause and effect, to a new level. And with a new underlying temporal structure of 'pause and effect'.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great introduction to the subject
This is a beautiful book, more at place on a coffee table than a bookcase. It benefits not only from its many full-color photos, graphic reproductions, and illustrations, but also from the freedom Meadows had to lay out these images with the text on the page, creating effects more typically seen on complex web pages than in traditional print books. From the Use-Case Scenario flow charts to the flipbook narrative that appears in the upper corners of the book and the related comic cell narrative that runs five panels to a page along the bottom of the book, Meadows is both telling us how interactive narrative "combines traditional narrative with visual art and interactivity" and showing us how these insights can be implemented in print.
5-0 out of 5 stars students love this book
I've used this book to teach interative narrative to both media arts and computer science students. It clearly (and dynamically) covers issues such as narrative, point of view, interactivity, and design in a way that students find compelling.By threading these issues throughout the book, Meadows reinforces how all are intertwined and equally important. My students love it, I suspect, because of the high image to text ratio... but the style gets them to see and think differently.Students are inspired by both the book's layout and the interviews with media artists. This book pushes them both to understand the multiple variables that go into creating interactivity and to take creative risks. You couldn't find a better text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Video Blogging and Podcasting
If you want to get into Video Blogging and Podcasting this is the best book on the market today.Covers every aspect in detail while still making it all seem easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Podcasting I have read yet
I work for Loyola Marymount University. We recently decided to make all lectures available via Podcasts. I went searching for books on the subject in order to find a solution for the school. This book was by far the best book on the subject. It even gave us some ideas for video blogging that we hadn't previously considered. Without the precise and coherent coverage given to Podcasting in this book I doubt we would have a solution even half as good. Thanks to the authors for their great book. It has been invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The nitty gritty
This hands-on guide is great for nailing down the nitty gritty of podcasting.Sure, there's nothing to it; you can make a podcast in a night. But then, once it's launched, there are SO many things to consider and so many ways to expand it.This is what makes casting a blast!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ASP reference book
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference and code samples, but...
Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book.I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP.However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars This is more like a reference manual
This book probably covers most information regarding Sendmail but is not meant for someonetrying to learn how to configure sendmail. Most chapters have a small introduction and then go on to explain each feature/aspect in detail. For a beginner, it is difficult to connect the dots (features) and understand how to configure / run sendmail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory
If you take care of Sendmail servers, you should have this book. I've been using this application for almost 10 years, and I still learn new things all the time, and this book is primarily where I get my answers. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars There has to be better...
I admire O'Reilly books for their uncanny ability to hook me into a lot of advance technologies.I desperately need to get a handle on sendmail for basic configuration, so naturally I come to O'Reilly.
