4-0 out of 5 stars the basics of web pages
Web pages are written in HTML, and Barksdale teaches this for an absolute novice. Hopefully, you should find it easy to follow. HTML's rapid success was due in no small part to this ease of use. It is also not a procedural language, though sometimes it is mistakenly called that. What Barksdale shows about HTML is that it is a declarative language. That is, you say that certain text should be written in a given colour or font style or size, and at a certain relative location on the page. You tell the browser what you want shown, and it has to implement that.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for the beginners
I read this book sometime ago and its an ok reference for beginners. It was easy to read and easy to understand (maybe because I have some solid understanding in programing but I doubt a complete beginner will understand everything).
1-0 out of 5 stars A disaster
While at a first glance or when starting to work through this book it seems great. That feeling soon disappears. There are just too many errors that leave the "absolute beginner" totally not knowing where to go next.Once a person has started working the examples and found several instructional errors, confidence is lost and so when things don't work as they are supposed to, you don't know if it is your error (typing, careless reading etc.) or if it is the @#@### book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Rush to publish!
Although the book is readable and avoids the geekspeak often found in programming books, there are too many glaring errors in this first edition. If you precisely follow the instructions, even the universal "Hello World" program does not work. True , you only have to change a tab index number to zero but nothing of this is mentioned and an "absolute beginner" will find this frustrating. There are multiple other errors and omissions that lead one to believe that there was a rush to get this book out there first. I would suggest waiting for the second edition or purchasing a book that has been proofread more closely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informational for beginner's
I purchased this as a reference guide for my mother. I think it's a great tool for those whowant to expand their abilities in the computer world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I get a bit nervous at the idea that a company like Microsoft would get into the business of Computer Dictionaries out of concern for a conflict of interest - that perhaps words specific to competitors might be left out or altered. However, there is something compelling about the idea of a dictionary of computer related words written by people who are in the business of using those words, and I do find this edition to be fairly balanced. 3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD, BUT NOT THE BEST VALUE
Yes, this edition of "Microsoft Computer Dictionary" has been revised and updated, when compared to the previous editions. Its 10,000 entries centered on software, hardware, and internet terms. They are easy to understand. But the fact that Microsoft stopped adding attached CD-ROMs (with this edition), without any significant price reduction is irritating. It depicts the company's insensitivity to the consumer needs.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized and not geared towards the aspiring professional
When this book says it is aimed at the absolute beginner it means beginner to programming rather than a programmer with no experience of Java. The book's format of making the topic interesting by gradually building up examples that are games is a good concept but the book does not execute the concept very well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Starts with a clean sheet of paper for the complete beginner.
This is a book oriented to the complete beginner. It basically starts with a blank sheet of paper and begins with a simple applet that just outputs a single line of text to the screen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written.
I have had good luck with this book, ONLY because I have had other programming languages. It does get into actual coding, but does little to explain how it works.
1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Book..Don't waste your money
A Great Introduction to VB
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to VB
At the University of Redlands, one of my biggest gripes was the use of ineffectual textbooks - the type that are better used as doorstops than for actual learning and/or reference. I had struggled with the idea of wasting money on books required for each class and tried something a bit different when I took Visual Basic 6.Instead of the required doorstop textbook, I purchased SAMS' TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6 IN 24 HOURS.I was very happy with that decision!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is great but CD has a problem
The book is well written in clear language and the example scripts are written in a special font making it easy to understand. I just cannot get the CD containing the compiler to work and it's vital to the lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning the core language but not much else
This book is not bad if you are mostly interested in learning the basics of the language but without the few "bonus" chapters it has at the end the Linux content is close to zero. In the standard part of the book the only thing about Linux that is mentioned is how to compile using GCC, which isn't even strictly Linux because it can also run on Windows.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor.. Very poor
This book is full of mistakes. It also begins by teaching you to program one way, and then tells you that this is wrong. I picked up this book as a refresher, because I have not done any C++ or UNIX in 10 years, but even I could pick out the mistakes in the book. It does not explain the important aspects of C++ very well, skipping over most things with just a cursory description of what is going on. Do not get this book.. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basically A Good Book

Things I dislike about this book:5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text book
I've reviewed many of the Java textbooks on the market and have compared their coverage with the objectives of the Sun Programmer certification.I have yet to find another book that covers as much material in a well-explained manner. It does assume that you have programming experience. This is definitely not your Idiot's gude / for Dummies level of book. The book contains many, detailed examples which demonstrate effective use of code.If you want a reference book look to the O'Reilly series, if you want at textbook get Liang. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Book needs update to J2SE 5.0
This book does a good introduction but the book needs an update to J2SE 5.x security updates. I like Core Security Patterns by Steel, Nagappan, Lai covers a lot more details on Java security apis than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very hands-on
Whether it is complete or not (of course, it is not), I would challenge anyone to point at a single alternative book covering Java cryptography at a greater level of details. The style is clear, coverage of ASN.1 is very helpful, and selection of BouncyCastle open source cryptoprovider is the most natural one. Lots more of details and code samples can be found in Bouncy Castle javadocs, but to navigate them without conceptual understanding of Java security in general and BouncyCastle implementation in particular, gained from the book like this one, would be a nightmare.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to Incorporate Encryption into your Programs
Cryptography is still a delicate issue with a lot of people. There are those, especially in certain law enforcement agencies, who believe that access to stong encryption should not be allowed in the hands of the general public. Indeed, there are export regulations that define encryption technology as munitions. ==At the other end of the scale, there is the simple fact that without secure data transmission, web based electronic commerce would simply be impossible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled learn PocketC programming
Yes, PocketC is a nice productive development environment for Palm - but it is based on a proprietary hybrid of the C language - and the whole book is centered around this specific development environment - if you think the book will cover standard c/c++ (e.g. using the gnu C++ compiler), you're in for a shock! Also, you have to BUY PocketC after 45 days, because it is shareware - the standard development environment offered by Palm (based on the Eclipse integrated environment & gnu c++) is FREE

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, with caveats
PocketC is an excellent programming platform for Palm devices. I have used it to create simple programs, and it turns out, with little more care, can be used to create professional quality programs. This book does not show you how to create professional quality programs with PocketC. However, it is a good book to start if you want to learn programming in your own time.4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Start
I liked this book because it gave me an invaluable knowledge base to start programming in for my Palm. It neatly covers most of what I need from palm programming without getting bogged down in complicated programming concepts such as object-oriented programming and interaction with the Palm OS. However, I hope Andy Harris has written books on those as well, because thanks to this one, I'm ready to go there too. I do wish the book had more information on how to represent my applications in the application window. I also would like to have the POSE software the book says is on the CD. The index and table of contents promise both, yet the book/CD combo provides neither. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not sure what kind of Beginner they mean...
I'm a SQL database programmer, not an application programmer, so I thought I could pick up Access VBA fairly quickly. Not so much, as it turns out. I started off with Alison Balter's Mastering Microsoft Access 2003 Development, which didn't give me enough basic grounding to really "get it". I succeeded in using some of the examples to my purposes, but couldn't do any truly innovative adaptions because I really didn't understand what I was doing.
2-0 out of 5 stars helpful but frustrating
i have to agree with all who say this book is hard to understand and to use - there are some good exercises, although one does have to puzzle one's way through them - there are recipes of how many of which type of controls to use but one has to go back and forth to name the objects to fit the code.i do like that the user can replicate the code and learn some convention in the process.the text is hard to follow and to fathom in that it seems the explanations of some of the concepts is superficial and thus hard to understand the concept.the absolute most frustrating thing for me is that there are no "answers" for the challenges.. if one gets stuck there is nothing on which to rely for help.. it is very difficult to know which part of the code one is supposed to parrot and adapt where.. and why things don't work.. i find it easier this time around to deal with the book, now that i have worked on three fairly complex database designs but i am still getting confused, lost and frustrated..

5-0 out of 5 stars For VBA Absolute Beginners not for Access Absolute Beginners
Hi, I bought this book, and it actually took a little over a month for me to receive it, since I thought it had been lost.
