5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Quick Read
This is a great book. How many technical books have you read in 1 week? That's what I did with this book.I love the Head First series. They don't make great reference books if you are an expert, but the expert on the title topic is not the audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars quick review
After I borrowed and read this book I decided to purchase it for the following reasons:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you started
After reading a great book titled "Thinking in Java (JAVA 1.4)" by Bruce Ekcel. That book is so far the best book I have read on JAVA so far.It has TONS of information and for the most part the author does a very good job in explaining the information. However my main complaint with the TIJ book was that it was very hard to read at times due to the author's writting style.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for OOP, but not for real JAVA
I am using this book for JAVA class at my University. It really sucks, because my teacher teaches like most other books teach, and this book has some weird pedagogical method of teaching objects rather than syntax.Terrible when your teacher wants to teach his way and it conflicts with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am not an idiot
I am a beginner at JAVA and I have tried other books and spent a lot of time making poor progress as they try to talk down to you. I am not an idiot and appreciate the fact that this book is by a real life teacher who is aware of the failings of beginners and helps to put these right. Combine this with an online discussion group for problems and you have an excellent learning environment

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Beginners learning Java 5++
Had my first taste of BlueJ as a college student at Bell College Hamilton, my Java skills have increased tremendously mainly due to the principles and concepts learned from BlueJ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners
this is a great book if you wanna learn c++ or game programming. it gets you started in both areas. it explains everything very well and teaches you how to write ms-dos batch files and stuff like that to go with your cpp applications. also the disk comes with a good IDE Dev-C++. Great Buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beginning C++ Programming -- With game examples
As mentioned earlier, this book is more like an introduction to c++ than it is an introduction to game programmnig for people already knowing c++.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual Java Teaching Book
A good visual book, teaching by the UML diagrams. Suitable for beginners to intermediate level and a bit more. Nice colorful book. With the help of "Sample Developments" this book will give you some real practical experiments throughout each chapter. My suggestion for those who want to begin Java with no prior programming experience is "Java 60 Minutes a Day" which you can find it in my review list. In my view, as an intermediat programmer, is a bit difficult to understand core java with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
This book is good for java beginner and it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn java in a fun and with more graphic. However, there is less topic covered. It is highly expect that more area coverage in later edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, but examples can be rather bland...
I've always been rather hesitant to read programming books with titles that imply a sacrifice of depth for gained ease in learning, but this book is a very well done and complete treatment of the fundamentals of the C++ language.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's in-your-face tech knoledge.
I found the information good, accurate, and intensely stuffed into the twenty one days. It's a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars An unfortunately flawed introduction.
As a programmer, when I first read this book through I thought that it wasn't the best written of the Dummies books, but it was a reasonable introduction that gave a good overview of some of the basics. However, having seen people with no experience of programming at all try to work their way through this book, I've also noticed that the author has sometimes failed to really explain himself in the clear and thorough way that the Dummies books are so good at, and has lost sight of who the book should be aimed at - people with NO experience of programming at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good INTRODUCTION - Which Is The Point Of This Book
Here's the deal with this book: it's for beginners, hence the title.A lot of reviewers knocked it down a bit because it did not use a "real-world" language like C++ or Java. There is a reason for that...those languages are much more cryptic and tougher to learn, you can get caught-up in just learning the syntax (among many other things) instead of basic programming logic and concepts.A beginners guide should not bog one down with frustration.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple programming
I actually didn't know anything about programming when I bought this book.I started reading it and I liked it because it explains things in very simple terms, but then I came across with another book called Beginning Programming written by Adrian and Kathie Kingsley-Hughes and I started comparing them and I started to see why this book by Wallace Wang doesn't deserve five stars.First the book is written using a programming language that while is simple enough to learn it doesn't have too many applications in the real world plus liberty basic cost $30.Even though the book brought a CD with an old version of liberty basic I was not able to run it in my computer. So if I wanted to really learn this language I needed to buy the newer version of Liberty Basic. The book by Kingsley-Hughes is quite simple too and it explains most terms using languages that are more useful in the real world like JavaScript and C++.The Dummies series have other books that are better than this one and they teach real world languages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Recipe for Programming
This book opened my eyes.I'd finished a Ph.D. in computer science, and had a decent exposure to quite a few programming languages and paradigms, before coming across this book.I was surprised to start working through this introductory book, and find myself learning new things! The book transformed my approach to programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should learn to design programs
As a programming do-it-yourselfer I've had many conflicting responses to this text -- it's didactic style, its attention to detail, its sometimes patronizing tone, its rigor and broad scope and at the same time its immersion in minutia and quiddities I have never encountered in 'computer books' I had ever perused. Perhaps it's my liberal arts background, or love 'em/hate 'em sensitivity to all those broad stiff-spined textbooks I had carried in back-packs since childhood, combined with a disdain for the authoritative stilted style these educators exude -- despite their patent love of their subject. I felt at once both patronized and condescended to.5-0 out of 5 stars The joy of learn programming

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Good Programming Book
This is one of the rare books, one of the few that I would actually recommend to anyone that is moving into C++ or needs a refresher on the ideas and methods behind programming in C++.You just can't go wrong buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching C++ using a strategy that works
The title of the book is an apt description of the approach taken by Eckel as he steps through the basic features of C++ and object-oriented programming. Rather than show how programs are written in C++, he presents the sequence of ideas that led to the structures and some of the ways they are implemented. This approach is very similar to the one I adopted after my first few years of teaching C++.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and complete
This is the best C++ book that I own. There are some concepts in C++ I never fully understood until I read this book. The author covers important details regarding the compiler. He also uses an effective technique to decribe complex C++ concepts by solving a problem in both C and C++. Understanding C++ at this level will help readers troubleshoot/understand their problems more effectively. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and easy to follow
My company had bought one copy of several books on JavaScript and everyone started borrowing Beginning JavaScript. So we bought several more!It is complete, easy to follow - for both beginning programmers and experienced programmers new to JavaScript. We were particularly interested in generating XML files. The 'advanced' book we bought didn't cover it, but Beginning JavaScript did.We couldn't be happier with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
JavaScript is the first programming language that I have ever attempted to learn. This book is making it so easy for me.Paul Wilton lays it out for you, step by step, explaining in layman's terms what each line means and any rules of thumb that are relevant to that line.He doesn't bog you down with detail or obscure exceptions either.I love this book, and I am so lucky to have found it.

This is a perfect book for those who is looking for skills of creating dynamic web pages, though it is a bit outdated now in part of intensive discussion on how to create cross-platform pages for older versions of IE and Netscape.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment
compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!
The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones.If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C.I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good-Probably a Caveat for all technical books--See Below
This book is good; I'm a definate beginner although I've read other books on the subject and have played around with vb .net. Really never broke down and really studied to learn. Decided I should; in most technical books I very much doubt that beginners will notice errors unless they are obvious. It was not until chapter 5 that I noticed one. Involved renaming the checkboxes 2-7 if I remember correctly which are in groupbox1. In the book it said groupbox2 which is where the radiobuttons are at. This popped out as a definate error; went online to: (...)
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent BEGINNERS book

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to get me to write this review!
I've never written in a review for a book here before. After reading this book I felt compelled to do just that. I've read more books than I can recall about learning programs. From Access to Photoshop and all things in between. While I learn a lot from these books without fail I hit areas that are just glossed over and I'm left thinking "Okay, but what about ____?"

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to buy if you want to learn C
The book has a great structure, there is 21 chapters/days total about C and an extra 7 chapters about other languages basic beyond C; Java, C#, and C++. There are however many defects to this book, there are many typos that I was able to spot, and there are no answers to some of the questions. I really enjoyed doing the Bug Busters section at the end of the chapters and would like to see more in the next editions of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for an intro book
Sams C++ in 21 Days is OK at best but lacks depth on covered subjects & does not cover some at all.Linked lists & binary trees were covered in three paragraphs and a small picture.Good for beginning to learn C++ but that where it stops.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Learn C, Look No Further

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Java
It helps to have a little programming experience under your belt. That having been said, this book provides a comprehensive, and readable introduction to Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I just wanted to increase the rating of the book from the 3.5 stars it has.I disagree with the majority of complaints people had earlier on.This book is very good, and very friendly. It is broken into days, and each new day is a new section which builds upon previous days while improving upon the information you need to know.It repeats some information as you progress thru the 21 sections, but in a clever way.It may be a bit hard for a novice programmer, but programming is not an easy task to begin with. For someone coming from a background in C/C++ or .NET, you can probably get thru half of the book in a week.Overall, this book is very well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start
This is a great book for anyone looking to start Java.
