5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this book 1996 when I was in high school. It was challenging, and now when I returned to it in 2006, I realize how much I skipped on my 96' reading. The great thing with this book (at least the 96 edition) is that is has such a nice flow. You will learn the concepts of Unix programming, introduced in a perfect order and pace.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
As a true beginner, I had a lot of trouble understanding the concepts in the book. It did not give nearly as many examples as were necessary nor was the presentation beginner friendly. I wouldn't recommend this book... unfortunately, I don't know of a good alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, extremely readable from page 1
As an absolute beginner in Linux, this book has answered most of my questions and took me out of my closed 'windows' based mentality. I warmly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Java 2 4 Dummies first, AND this one
This is sorta sequel to first Burd's book and it goes little deeper, so I'd say it is a bit advanced for first Java Book. You need both Burd books on Java for a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars My wife can read onechapter in half day
I brought this for my kids, they want to learn Java in school. But my wife was the first one read this. She was able to read one chaper in half day and understand the whole chaper. It is a really easy to understand book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Beginner Programmer Book
A few years back I tried to learn Programming by reading several books like the Perl book with a Camel on it's cover. I couldn't get past page 2 and gave up. A similiar thing happenned with C for Dummies, I couldn't get past a particular chapter on loops and gave up. Now, I think my logical aptitude is quite OK, since I have a Master's Degree in Finance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best OpenGL Book Ever (not counting the sequel to this book)
While all the information in this book can be found free on the net, (nehe.gamedev.net would be an excellent resource and is even mentioned in the book), the book combines all that knowledge into one location with each topic thoroughly covered in an easily accessible way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft specific treatments are pragmatic
Some reviewers have remarked that the book concentrates overly on OpenGL running on a Microsoft operating system. But most of the text on the usage of OpenGL is quite independent of the OS. And the passages specific to Microsoft are a reflection of the market reality on the desktop. I considered Astle to be quite reasonably pragmatic in offering the latter advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Beginning? Yeah Right...
This book is utterly useless for both a beginner like me, and someone who knows C++ well. All it does is explain what each function does rather than teaching you how to use it. In the 2nd chapter alone, there's a 200-line program of all OpenGL functions that you're expected to understand by about 3 pages of explanation. I'm a beginning programmer who knows a lot about C, but not everything, and this book isn't helping me at all. Also, I can tell that it doesn't teach you much, as the end of book game example is slow and buggy. Go learn C++ then get an online tutorial or reference page, don't waste the money on this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough.
I attended the ABAP academy and received certification. Prior to the academy I read this book. I found it to be better than nothing but other students found the ABAP Objects book to be more current. The ABAP Object book also provides a demo R3 system. This allows the student to practice at home and be more creative. Win 2000 and MS SQL 2000 are required for the demo version. Go with ABAP Objects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
It is a good book as a reference, but not advisable as a tutorial.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer and resource to turn to
This book is a great primer for those who have some general programming knowlege, and who are self starters.I have gone through three other similar books, and found this to be the most useful. It will get you started, but you will quickly yearn for more meat and examples, which can be found in the next book in the series. ... Editorial Review

A great book for beginning programmers who want to learn Perl. Filled with concrete examples and, yes, by using this book you will be able to write good Perl code on your own in 21 days. But no perlson is an island, and there is no single book that covers Perl completely, so we recommend that you also get Programming Perl, which is better at providing the language specifications, and, in fact, was written by the author of Perl. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - clear and easy to read
I find myself using this book as a refernce almost every day.It is well written and easy to follow.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't even finished the book and I am already feeling like a perl programmer
I bought this book after trying to learn Perl through another book (Perl for Bioinformatics). This book is definitely a better introduction to Perl than any other book I've seen. It is clear and concise enough and although it might be hard to finish it in 21 days, you can start coding your own scripts much before the end of the book. I am still on chapter 11 and I can program most of what I need with it (i.e parsers and simple bioinformatics applications). I recognize that there are a few typos on the book but if even Knuth's Art of Computer Programming have them why shouldn't Lemay's Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days do the same?
4-0 out of 5 stars Above Average Introduction
Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days by Laura Lemay is sufficient for the beginner wanting to learn Perl, be it on Windows or a UNIX-based operating system. If Perl is your first programming language, then this book is a fairly good book to choose as a starting point. It teaches the basics of programming in Perl and moves quickly from that point onward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Two Thumbs UP!!!!
FINALLY!Someone gets it right.Being a Computer Engineer and programming expert, I was concerned about buying a package to learn Visual Basic. When learning other languages, I usually found it easy to justlearn by crunching code, using only references.I am shocked at howaffective this package is.It contains everything you need.Four CD'swith help files, Visual Basic 6.0 (without all of the professionalfeatures) and 1.1GB of information by the Microsoft Developers Network(MSDN).One of the books included in this kit is a step by step approachto programming in Visual Basic.Although the book was written for thebeginner, I have found it very interesting. It is a good book because itallows both novice and advanced users to learn at their own pace, withoutgetting bored. The other book is the programmer's guide that accompaniesthe professional and enterprise versions of Visual Basic. This book is anexcellent supplement, once one has finished the step by step manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - what book is there for Intermediate's ?
Excellent book - the practicality and teaching methods of this book are second to none. I had no prior experience of Visual Basic and after using this pack I'm confident of my vb abilities. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I got this book based off the reviews given to it. I've done a little bit of vbscript and realized that vbscript can only get me so far. I decided to pick this book up to learn c#.The way it teaches is perfect for the beginner or someone who has not done programming before. The book's examples end up having you make some sort of game relevant to the subject making programming that much more interesting. I would definitly recommend this book to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than C# for Dummies
Well thought out with a good progressive flow for the reader, starting with the basics and then dealing with all the fundamentals intrinsic to a well-rounded education for the programmer.

4-0 out of 5 stars No false advertising here
It says 'for the absolute beginner', and it is.It reads a lot like a 'for dummies' book.I give it a 4 because it does what it says, teaches C# for someone who has never programmed.Anyone who bought this thinking it was 'for smarties' has only himself to blame for not shopping carefully. It does a pretty good job of explaining the very basics of programming and happens to use C# to do it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed because I expected more from this book.
I have been reading through the book. Actually it provides very clear explanations, but I had the impression the author talks too much and keep saying the same things over and over again. The book could be half its volume with the same content of knowledge. Besides the provided examples are a bit too simple and obvious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book on neural networks using Java
Programming Neural Networks in Java will show the intermediate to advanced Java programmer how to create neural networks. This book attempts to teach neural network programming through two mechanisms. First the reader is shown how to create a reusable neural network package that could be used in any Java program. Second, this reusable neural network package is applied to several real world problems that are commonly faced by programmers. This book covers such topics as Kohonen neural networks, multi layer neural networks, training, back propagation, and many other topics. The content of the book is as follows: 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique book
I have received my copy of the book and I can't put it down. It has been great help with my AI research at the University. I have the other book from the same author "Programming Spiders, Bots and Aggregators in Java" and I have the same comments for both. Both are easy to read, have precise information and great code. Chapter 7 of this book "OCR with Kohonen Neural Network" makes the book more than worth it. Great stuff. I hope the author does not stop and keep writting books like these. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning AI and also experienced programmers alike. The author makes though topics seem easy. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks I've read
This book is awesome for someone who is just beginning to learn PHP.Probably the best intro book I've ever read. The examples and concepts are explained very clearly. It is also easy to follow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.....
I was a little scared about other people comments, but I decided to buy the book and give a try, thanks God!... I did it,
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD for the Absolute Beginner
This book is an excellent resource for people who have had NO programming experience or very little. For people (like some of the more recent reviewers) who do have programming experience in PHP or other programming languages, I imagine this book would be remedial as it covers basic programming concepts (which are the same in all programming language) like variables, loops, and arrays, in great detail. For the complete Novice, this is excellent. For the experienced, I'm sure this feels like a waste of time--but really--what can you expect from a book that says in its title "For the Absolute Beginner".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book ofr those using the SQL Plus command line or GUI tool
Oracle SQL Plus: The Defnitive Guide
4-0 out of 5 stars the glories of the command line
The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.
5-0 out of 5 stars great guide
I have found this book to be a really great guide that is easy to follow. The author provides a gentle, but thorough introduction to topics like creating reports, writing scripts, customization etc.He offers methodologies and alternatives beyond the syntax that you can find in the manual. For example, he presents and evaluates six ways one can achieve some kind of if-then-else flow control in SQL*Plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introductory programming book written!
Who ever thought that learning C for non-programmers/minimal programmers could be fun or that the C language is a great language for people to start off on? Apparently Gregg Perry did and boy was he right on the money. This book takes a non-technical person who has never programmed before, or a semi-technical person who has minimal programming experience and turns them into a C programmer in a matter of days and gives them a wonderful time doing it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
Just emphasising the other positive reviews!! This is a great book to learn from. I've read alot of bland dry computing books on various topics but this book is the best I've read yet and learnt from. I thought so highly of this book that I even got off my [...] to write my first review!
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute best book to start with!!!!
This book is amazing... I have quite a few "C from the beginning" type books, they all just jumop in and assume you know this and that. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning programmer.
I was excited to get this book, and, after reading it, I am happy to say it was worth every penny!
3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but source code in book is wrong.
I love this book, and I feel it is very well written. The author gives pretty good examples and explains the code that he writes line by line. Perfect for the beginner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Even tho this book got some negative reviews, I just knew that a 700+ page book would have to teach something. I will admit that the beginning of the book does make you wonder how so many words can say so little, but after you get past that part, the book is great. I've programmed in Basic on my Commodore computer and used QBasic and Blitz Basic on my PC, and just discovered and purchased DarkBasic and it looks like it's going to be awesome! But the book that comes with the DarkBasic program really only describes the commands. You'd have to download the examples and print them out to learn how to program. Even it you do that, I'd still recomment getting this book, because I like to learn from more than one source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Internet Computer Language Dictionary
A very concise, well-written dictionary of computer terms, language defintions, internet definitions, standards, computer interface devices, connectivity, etc. Terms are easy to find and the definitions are exact and to the point. There are even references to web sites where appropriate to further identify a term. The description of connectors is particularly helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I can't count the number of computer terms and abbreviations I've looked for in this book -- looked for in vain, that is. The one that inspired me to go online and complain publicly was ICC. There is no ICC (International Color Consortium) reference! Unbelievable that this basic abbreviation has been left out of a dictionary of computer and internet terms. Save your money and use online resources for definitions and explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars YOUR EARLY COMPANION
If you are an average computer (or Internet) user whose requirements include a portable Computer/Internet Dictionary, I will recommend this one. It is handy, concise, and easy-to-use. But, if your computer knowledge is advanced, it will be wise to look for something else. This dictionary will not be of much benefit to you. It has a beginner's outlook; and offers a modest 2,500 definitions. ... Read more

This book is so well written, if you are just starting out with VB, then this book is a must.Where my tutor does not make sense, James Foxall does. James you are a genius, Thank you.
5-0 out of 5 stars I was new to vb and .net
I have had many years in IT. I wanted to understand what .net was about and VB (.net) to get through the brochure speak and be able to manage developments in the .net environment effectively.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Comprehensive
The title could rather be given as sams teach yourself VB.NET "for" 8 hours....All what has been presented here can be mastered in just 8 hours. This book lacks essence in conveying the concepts. It does not also cover all parts of VB.NET. The author could have dedicated some more topics on ADO.NET and database programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for any network programmer
This is an excellent reading for any network programmer. More than ACE itself the concepts covered are of a great value. I am a beginner to intermediate network programmer, but an experienced programmer otherwise, and found this to be an extremely valuable resource in terms tackling large application frameworks from the ground up. The concepts are precise upto the point but extremely easy to read and digest. Of course, the book is assuming that you know quite a bit of every thing else that is not covered here. There are quite a bit of things that are totally missing or not correct based on the OS and the advances in Posix threading. Nevertheless this is an excellent source for any network programmer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I discovered ACE almost two years ago after a coworker told me about it.As a developer in the networking / streaming media / distributed computing space, i've all too often run into the problems that are inherent in developing this sort of software -- scalability, maintainability, not to mention all of those bugs ...5-0 out of 5 stars Good ACE overview
I have been trying to learn ACE for the past few months now.Their docs are not that great.I ran C++ doc generator on the API's and that helped alot. The book really closed the deal for me.I work with many customers that are just begining to use ACE and I recomended this book to them as well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Los objetos al "desnudo"
"Beginning Java Objects" es un excelente libro que muestra las minucias de los objetos, la manera correcta en que deben de implementarse, la importancia de la encapsulaci?n y de los beneficios que nos proporciona la herencia.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book really brings it all together!
I had the first edition of Beginning Java Objects From Concepts to Code sitting on my bookshelf for about 4 years.Meanwhile, I've taken several different Java training courses ranging from beginner to advanced level.I've been part of a development team, and although my role has generally been more of a business subject matter expert, I have also gotten my hands dirty and done some large chunks of coding, debugging, and refactoring other people's code.
5-0 out of 5 stars One program is enough
Regarding Brad's comment, the 'one program' is complex enough to give the reader a lot of practice in understanding the relationships between objects, and that seems to me (an out-of-practice former COBOL programmer) to be the biggest hurdle in understanding object-oriented programming. Barker's book gives more help in this area than the other Java books I've read. I read Eckel's Thinking in Java, and got lost by the middle of the book. Once I've finished Barker, I think I'll get a lot more out of Eckel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mostly for the Biologist
People come to Bioinformatics from either the bio side or the CS side, with a few from various other disciplines. This book is best for the bio person who is getting into programming, not the programmer who is getting into bio.
