4-0 out of 5 stars A few things would make this book perfect
I've programmed for years, but actionscript was different enough for me not to be able to pick it up easily. This book helped immensely in learning basic concepts like the timelines, layers, movieclips, etc. I'm close to completing one game as I write this, as a matter of fact, so the book did it's job.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ROXORS TO THE MAXORS
I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF WORK IT MUST'VE TAKEN TO MAKE THIS BOOK WHAT IT IS, THIS BY FAR IS THE BESTEST BOOK ON BEGINNING FLASH GAME DESIGNING XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and easy for beggining Action Scripters
I've tried a lot of action script books but this is the best one by far for begginners. The author takes the reader step by step through rudimentary instructions and code one step at a time explaining what each part does. In the next lessons, the author just tells the reader in short hand to start by doing what they did in the last chapter, and then builds on the knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars To the person saying C# is a rip off of Java.
I don't have this book, so I'll give it a 3, which is the average rating. I just want to say to the person who keep saying C# is a rip off of Java that Java is a rip off of C++. Hey, good things are copied all the time. C# copied some good features from Java because they work well. That's normal. Java is very similar to C++ because of the same reason. I don't see why you should even mentioned that C# rips off of Java. That's dumb. I'm not defending C#. I have never used it before. In fact, I am a big fan of Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Level Presentation of VB C++ Express
I found this book to be right on target. It presents a solid overview of C++ and .NET. I have no idea why some of the other reviews being posted keep refering to C#. This is a C++ book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book should be called .Net for C++ coders
I orderd this book with Ivor Horton Beginning Visual C++ 2005 (which I allready own the previous version of) so I can give it to my 14 year old cousin.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is now obsolete.
Well, I bought this bought and quickly discovered that I was wasting my time and money.Microsoft has now introduced Visual Basic 2005 Express. You can download it free from Microsoft, along with some good documentation on learning.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for (any kind of) beginner
As several reviewers have pointed out, this is NOT a book for beginners to programming. It is NOT a book for beginners to Visual Basic programming. It is a book for Visual Basic programmers who want to learn about .NET programming. The book is not a bad introduction for programmers who want to learn Visual Basic .NET. The author should not have allowed the book to be published in this series. The title is false and misleading. I won't buy another book in the series nor another book by Jonathan Harbour.

1-0 out of 5 stars microsoft visual basic.net programming for the absolute beginner
This book was terrible.I would use it better to start a camp fire or to burn the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information from Author
To see the book cover, detailed table of contents, and
5-0 out of 5 stars The knowledge to fulfill your imagination.
The book is well written and concise with many wonderful examples to support the text. The combination of both web design and web programming into a single resource is inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book spanning all aspects of web design.
This is an excellent book that covers all aspects of web development. To often are programmers unconcerned with the aesthetics representing the code they create. However it does not matter how functional your site is if the user cannot enjoy it, understand it and navigate it. That is where this book fits in. It is the perfect medium between the programming world and the design world. If read cover to cover this book can give even the most inexperienced reader the skills needed for professional web development. It is well organized and laid out in a manor perfect for the classroom environment. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in web development. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better
The main problem I have is with the lack of editting. His choice of words can really leave you confused sometimes.I keep having to cross out unneeded words and correct his grammar so that the puzzle will be solved if I need to come back and read the same part later.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a bit rough, but useful
I've been a programmer for longer than most programmers have been alive, but I'm new to SQL Server and Visual Basic. This book looked like it would be the perfect introduction to both, but it seems to have been rushed to market. It appears that chapters 11 and 12 were once a single chapter, and were split without a lot of subsequent editing in either the book or the sample code on the website. On the second page of Chapter 12, for example, it says "The samples to this point in the chapter...", but there haven't been any samples to this point in the chapter. This is somewhat understandable in a printed book, but as I write this (5/13/2006) the book has been out for almost 5 months, and the sample code on the website still has all the code piled together in a folder called "Sample code for chapters 11 and 12".This makes it harder than it needs to be to find the code the author is referring to when one wants to get some context for the snippets of code in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a beginner's point of view
I have just a little experience in access 2000 so the thought of moving to SQL databases was scary. Rick Dobson did a great job of taking the fear out of SQL with his book Beginning SQL Server 2005 Express. He takes you step by step through the process of working with SQL Server 2005 Express. The lessons are paced for the beginners and the code examples work, that in it self is something new. He starts you at the beginners level and then brings you to some of the advanced topics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Teach Yourself Book
Okay, I'm baffled about the reviews that rave about how clearly this book explains things, because I'm a straight A student and the author has completely lost me.If you are trying to attempt to teach yourself a programmng language, this isn't the book. How do I know? Because even though I'm taking a college level class, that's practically what I'm doing - the professor isn't going over anything. I guess we're supposed to absorb it from osmosis, but it won't happen with this book. I'm reading chapters twice, and still not getting it. So, here I am, looking for something that will help me learn this stuff because this is a required class and I need to pass it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good teaching book
A very good teaching book for students having the first contact with programming.

2-0 out of 5 stars Programming Intro, Then a C++ intro
This book starts by explaing the history of Programming languages and then abstract programming theory. The first three chapters should be skipped by anyone with previous programming experience. The rest of the book moves at a snails pace introducing concepts at extremely slow pace, and at the end you can write a program that can factor pie and return it to the command prompt! Yeah! There are better books on the Learning C++, However if you have no concept of how to program, and need a very "hold your hand" approach this book would do well for you. Just don't expect to write any useful programs after reading it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The foundation Stone for Visual C++ Beginner
This is quite an extrordinary text, not only because of the knowledge it covers but also because of Ivor's presentation and writing style. Not once in this book did I ever had a question of "What the hell does this mean ?" Some key important things you need to know if you are thinking to pick up this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Clear
Ivor Horton has written a very clear introduction to Visual C++ 6.0.What I like most about this book:When a new feature is introduced he explains the meaning of the feature on a conceptual level instead of just showing how to use it.Therefore when learning it is easy to prioritize and organize all this new material since he has essentially already organized it for the reader. I have found that many other books leave the burden on the reader to absorb a bunch of seemingly unrelated bits of knowledge, and then make sense of them before learning is truly complete. This is of course tedious and time-consuming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This book is very...very...very good book for those who want to learn about C++ and Visual C++. Before I read this book I have read a book with a title"Learning Visual C++ in 21 days". I learn that book in 25 days. When I want to start my programming I'm stuck. After I read this Ivor Horton's book about a week, I can continue my programming without a stuck. My previous problem have been solved. The code in this book is free of error not like the other books. If there have an error that only a typos error that come from you not from Ivor Horton's code.I can learn much with this book. You can catch an error in another book after you have read this Ivor's book.Don't believe me?It's all depend on you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the original books, skip the poorly designed, hard-to-use software.
The NIDOTTE BOOK set is wonderful! Compact, infinitely user-friendly, accessible in every way, and head-and-shoulders above every other Hebrew/Theological dictionary for the Hebrew Bible for beginning and intermediate students. However, this particular SOFTWARE has some built in, severely limiting "gotcha's" that will throw average users off and even make it unusable. Zondervan offers an all-important "patch" on their web site, but it involves a 6-7 step do-it-yourself method in which you have to "open the hood" of Windows more than average users will feel comfortable doing. And even then, for this user, it still didn't work. By "didn't work", I mean that the all important "search" function simply doesn't work! It produces endless loops of error messages. The result is...a clunker...and for something that is billed as "version 5.1", it is a very surprising clunker. My advice is to stick to the multi-volume book set until these people figure out how to build software that doesn't come with built-in bugs! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars GARBAGE!!!
This book is, almost, total garbage. Only reason why I bought the book is becuase my course requires it. In the book, author talks about one thing, then all of a sudden you are faced with a new concept, and 2 lines later, another concept. I was very dissapointed becuase the key terms sometimes,or never, are not clearly explained and leaves you in frustration and deep anger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Would Use This to Teach My Beginning Course
I teach Intro to Computers at a local community college. I wish this was our textbook! It's easy to read and comprehend without getting too techie. The range of topics covered is incredible. Mr. Miller keeps the explanations simple, sometimes humorous without the clutter you find in the Dummies books, and layed out in a format that is easy on the eyes and the brain. I recommend this book to my beginning students to complement what we cover in the Intro class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for adult beginners
This book, unlike the dummies books, does not assume you have a basic knowledge of computer controls. The picture graphics from XP screens tie in to step by step intstructions that give you confidence to sit down and know you'll get a desired result.I strongly recommend this for someone like me who got their first computer at age fifty-five.Four months and five books later was still stymied with some facets. If you want to do it by yourself, or have to, this is the book to start with.

4-0 out of 5 stars for an adult reader

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for beginners
I would hate for people to get the wrong idea about the book from reading the other posts. This really isn't a bad book.
1-0 out of 5 stars a poor attempt at a quick buck, shame on Apress!
My biggest complaint with VB.NET game programming books so far (and I've read a few) has been that they either: A) try to teach elementary VB.NET using game flavored examples (but nothing about actual game development) or B) try to take existing game programming material and shoe-horn it into a VB.NET book. Sadly this book falls squarely into the second category (so far).
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled
Although this book isn't a complete waste of money, don't be fooled. It's not very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's book
I used this book in grad school to refresh my very limited SAS knowledge for a course I was doing. I'd used other books during my undergrad days, but none of them was as helpful as this one. It's a good way for a beginner to ease themselves into SAS without getting tangled in the complexities.3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners, two books better than one
I suggest getting both a book like this, for its greater comprehensivity, combined with another one (like 'SAS programming By Example') for its more user friendly accessibility, if you are a beginner. Both books can be used as a starting text, and having two books can be better than one, and each one complements the other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This is the best introductory SAS book I have seen.It introduces the basic SAS structure and programming statements.A good and detailed explanation is provided for DATA step vs. PROC, a topic that always provesto be difficult to grasp for SAS newbies.Read more

This book does exactly what it states in the title. It provides an excellent introduction into the art of Visual Basic.I reviewed a number of books before selecting this one and fully recommend it, especially for anyone like me who had never previously experimented with VB and finds the techno speak in a lot of other books difficult to understand. This book provides clear, readily understandable step by step guides and is an ideal introduction to VB for the complete beginner. ...
