strong image analysis
Guzdial teaches Python from the angle that you want to use it to easily manipulate various types of multimedia files. The files might contain images, sounds, video or even just plain text. This gives some of you extra motivation to learn the material.
best python as a first language book so far

Excellent book, even for XP users
I am just finishing this book, and it is one of the best programming books I have ever worked with.The author has a sense of humor that completely complements the work.I usually find humor in a programming book cheesy and distracting, but Cadenhead's humor is informative and fun at heart, and makes the work go more quickly and make more sense.
Excellent for me but...
This book is designed to learn basic programming with Java and it's been working excellent for me. However, in the "HOUR 2" section where you exposed to the first very basic programming, you'd get very confused if you are newbies who are totally rely on Windows XP. I assume that the most newbies have never had to deal with the XP's hidden feature - DOS, these days.

I've never had so much fun making flowcharts in my life!
I used this book in my college Beginning Logic Class.This book has basic concepts for the way computer programs work and how a developer's mind needs to work.
Better then I thought...
Nice book for those wanting to really do something with any programming language.Although the examples are all in QBasic and Visual Basic, the concepts are applied in pretty much all popular languages today.I found this book to be less boring then I thought it would be when I first looked at it.

Will Make You or Break You as a Beginner Programmer
I purchased this textbook for a class and found it to be very good in illustrating programs in a language-independent manner. (Flowcharts and pseudocodes are used instead of a specific language.) The exercises in theback of each chapter are helpful, but become tougher and tougher, demandingmore time and detail. If you can't handle these exercises perhaps youpicked the wrong career! Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read
This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.
Not the best, but not too shabby
MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick. ... Read more

I am giving the book one star because of the number of exercises in it and no stars is not an option.

Pretty good book
I bought this book for a class at my university, im currently majoring in IT. I found this book to be very easy to read and to understand. The code Samples are very simple and the books provides a reasonable ammount of exercise to work on. One Downside to this book is that the autor explanation to some topics in tha latter chapters of the book tends to be incomplete but is a pretty good book up to chapter 8. One important thing though is that if you want to master VB.NET this is not the book for you its main purpose is just to give you a brief introduction to the language. ... Read more

Great Book - Poor Coding Style
The book is great once you know your way around. However, the coding style is very poor. It looks more like code for VB6ers who are too dumb or too lazy to switch to .NET but want to use it anyway to get rid of the "Wanna-be coder" attribute. VB has grown, but unfortunately, some authors haven't. I prefer books from authors who can pick up changes quicker than that.

Not for beginners, not for experts.
I'm an intermediate programmer having worked sporadically in a variety of Object Oriented languages (Java, C++ etc.). I have to ramp up very quickly in order to do a VB.NET app, and bought this book for two reason. First: I wanted to gain a quick familiarity with the Visual Studio IDE, which I had never used before. I also needed a quick primer on the syntax and functionality of VB.NET.

a must read for a beginner

Chapters 1-8 good; Chapters 9-14 don't work
This book was published too early. By that I mean, Java EE 5 was not finalized so the code examples starting in chapter 9 don't work. Another example is chapter 10 titled EJB Entity Beans. According to the Sun tutorial, Entity Beans have been replaced by the Java Persistence API.

Good but...
The book is very good until you reach chapter 9, i think the authors made this book with a no ready version of ejb 3.0 spec's.
Too much too fast!
I bought this book to update my self on Java EE 5. However when I come to Chapter 9 and I try to run Jboss session bean samples it seems that things have changed since the moment they wrote the book. And I'm sure specification of EJB3 and JBOss will change until final realease.

Utterly and completely worthless
This series of disks is nothing more than Italian words and names spoken ONLY IN ITALIAN.Because there are no English translations, it is almost impossible to learn even the most basic Italian from these disks.

entertaining well organized lessons with audio CDs
This Italian course is well organized, comprehensive and has 8 audio CDs. The dialogs are lively, modern, and natural.

Adequate
This is heavily focused on C programming in the Windows environment. The information is decent, but if you want to use Unix or Linux, etc., you will need something else to supplement.

blurry screen captures
If you have never programmed before, then this gentle introduction to C might be suitable for you. It explains the syntax. And how to code in a procedural, top-down manner. It also points out the advantages of designing for code reusability. Something that is probably not high on the awareness of a new programmer.
Short doesn't mean sweet
I hope Vine has written a more comprehensive introductory C book. This book is clear, well-written, and can even be used as reference for common C functions. However, its short length necessitates cutting out the more advanced features of C (and more complex code examples) that longer introductory C programs introduce. I suspect that this book competes less in a market for C learners, than the those learners who want to pick up a new language with less time and effort. ... Read more
