Perhaps the best way to jump to C# if you already know a bit programming.
As the title says, this book may be the best way to jump to C# from another language. I knew a lot of VB6, but I found it slow and cumbersome, so I bought this book. This book quickly shows you how C# works. There no stupid humour or blabbering, it gets straight to the point and teaches you C# step by step.
The best all-around C# book!!!
As mentioned in the title of my review, this book is without a doubt the best general instruction (how-to) and reference book on Visual C# .NET that I have found anywhere. The topics are very clearly explained, the code snippets are concise enough that you aren't wading through a single project that grows as the chapters progress.
Great Book
Overall, I'd say this a great book for learning C#. Prior to reading the book I had knowledge of C++ fundamentals. For the most part, I didn't have any issues digesting most of the material in the book. Although, I will say that I didn't catch on to Mike Gunderloy's writing style quiete easily. I could tell something was different in the quality of the writing later on in the book and then realized (from the examples) it was Mike's writing. Maybe cause his topics were a bit more advanced. A Book for Beginning IDL Users
Nothing is more intimidating to a new user of IDL than to sit down at a computer with an empty command line prompt and a stack of manuals on their desk and be told to write an IDL program. Where to begin!? And the experience is especially frightening to a new user with little or no programming experience in any language, let alone IDL.

Great for beginners
With only knowledge of a high level language (C/C++) I started with this book and it was well worth the money. A good introduction to the hexadecimal and binary numbers, then a brief look at the inner workings and then on with the assembly instructions, process flow and subroutines. A very clear way of showing things, well written. The only thing I missed were the answers to the question posed at the end of the chapter. But only one e-mail to the author was enough to obtain them, therefore many thanx to Mr. Detmer.
Finally, a textbook you can learn from....!!
Richard Detmer has done an excellent job of relating a very difficult subject! I originally signed up for a a class in assembly language my sophomore year. As a computer science major, the course is mandatory. Three weeks into the class I dropped it.....despite the instructors knowledge of the subject, the textbook we were using made no sense. I reregistered for the class the next semester, and the textbook had changed. Although I had to pay for a new textbook, the cost was well worth it! This book makes sense to the novice assembly programmer, and carries the reader well into an intermediate level of understanding of the subject. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning assembly programming on an 80x86 platform (which includes most non-embedded systems these days), or studying this material for a course. If you are taking a class in assembly, I would strongly suggest you use this textbook as a supplement.

A good introduction to the topic, but that is all
I bought this book as a refresher and as a reference to keep on my shelf at work, where I need to write (or at least read and understand) some Intel x86 assembly from time to time. I was looking for something that wasn't as outdated as my college textbook, "80X86 IBM PC and Compatible Computers: Assembly Language, Design, and Interfacing, Vols. 1 and 2" by Mazidi et al (mine is the second edition). That is the problem with a lot of assembly books, is that they pre-date the 32-bit instruction set (the 80386 and higher CPUs) and hence they give a lot of bad and just wrong advice. This book does not have that problem, which is good. It also does a great job of helping the high-level language programmer understand how their programming language constructs translate into assembly instructions and actually take place. I have never seen a good explanation of that outside of articles by disassemblers and reverse engineers, but every programmer ought to know these concepts because it may come in handy when debugging some day.Read more

It's just BAD!
Won't waste anymore of my time telling
The Book Professor Review
Generally this text is for beginners, so if you are someone who knows nothing about C# or Game Programming, you'll probably be very happy with the book or at least need to study it. Additionally, if you have already studied C# say in school or through other books, but want to learn Game Programming, then you'll probably be very happy with the book or at least need to study it.
Another example of "Type now understand later (if ever)"
I've gone through half of this book and will not be completing it.
