4-0 out of 5 stars At what level is this text written?
My favorite JCL books were those by Mani Carsthanassis,`Expert MVS/(ESA and XA) JCL.Unfortunately these were published in 1991 and 1989 and do not contain features introduced since then.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for usage and examples.
This is one book that I would not want to have to do without. Worth every cent, an excellent resource for sample code, utility programs, and infromation. Doug Lowe has a very good style that makes it easy to learn. One of my best buys!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginning JCL book - current for MVS/ESA
An excellent JCL book for beginners and to use as a reference. This is one of the 2 definitive up-to-date JCL books (the other being Gary Deward Browns book).Good explanations of mainframe concepts as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Its What You Need. Seriously!
I have been a Web Design and Developer since 1998. I picked up this book in 2002 because I wanted to learn how to create an online database program and a e-commerce store. I picked it up at my local book store and found that it was very easy to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Very useful book with great code samples.Defiantly buy this book if you are looking to do some e-commerce programming with ASP 3.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars An explicit expose exploring semantic relations
WordNet, the book, is a must to anyone who wants to use or learn about WordNet the semantic network/lexicon.The early chapeters of the book discuss the strategies and treatment of the various parts-of-speech by the development project. The later chapters are contributions of researchers that have applied the database to various investigations.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good buy if you can get a bargain price on it.
The 1st edition is now out-of-date. I think it was written for an early or beta version of .NET. But..., if you find this, second hand, at a bargain price it's still a good buy. You can still get the errata and sample code from the APress web-site (not the Wrox site!). The book gives a good introduction to C# but I wouldn't recommend it too highly to someone who had never done any programming before. It's recommended for people who have already learnt one programming language. The book does a good job of teaching OOP programming in C# to people who already have some programming experience (but not with OOP). When working through the sample projects everything went well for me with the sample code until the last 2 case studies. I was able to convert all the projects to VS.NET 2003 and to figure out the occasional line of code I needed to rewrite to get the projects working. Things seem to have got a little rushed at the end with the 2 final case studies. I couldn't get them to work and didn't even understand how the first was supposed to work (from the non-explanation given in the text). The other criticism I have of the book is that there aren't enough exercises at the back of the chapters and that sample answers to exercises aren't given. Note: book authors - this (sufficient exercises with sample answers) is an essential requirement for a serious book aimed at beginners.
4-0 out of 5 stars BORING
This is a great book - it explains the concepts quite well, for a person like me, with a PHP background. However, it's incredibly boring. The first 250 pages of the book is dedicated to many small hello-world-style examples of code, which really doesn't explain why or where one should really use enumerations, structs and stuff - I would have preffered to be walked through larger, real-life applications instead. Don't get me wrong - this book is great for looking up stuff, but as a beginner, it's better to complement it with a more hands-on approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but sloppy
This book has very good intentions and covers things in a good solid order, BUT, the mistakes are just plain sloppy. Please don't tell me this book was seriously edited, because you can tell immediately that it was not. If I wrote documentation at work as sloppy as this book was written, I'd be in trouble. On the flip side, the excercises were very helpful, and the authors do a decent job simplifying the topics enough for beginners to grasp them. However, true beginners should start with C# for Dummies.I hope the second edition really cleans things up though. Wrox should allow for mail-in rebates when second editions come out so quick. I'm sure many of us would be happy to tear off the back cover of the first editions and send it in for a check in return! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought I got the shaft, but then discovered the gold.
I performed some programming in Visual Basic 6 a few years ago and then my job was changed so that I was maintaining a Unix program for a few years, which entailed putting fires out each day and very little programming of any type.A few months ago I was fortunate enough to get transferred to a great job programming web sites and some Windows applications. I've been able to write some fairly complex programs, but I knew I was missing some large piece of the puzzle. I'm really a novice programmer.I wasn't creating classes and I wasn't doing a lot of things that were efficient. If my programs needed to do more or scale, they were very difficult to adjust.During these months I've purchased a lot of books, and they had good stuff in them, but I still wasn't able to put things together.I would see things like "WithEvents" and ask what was that for.I had to do some threading and succeeded, but only by trial and error and I didn't understand the "why" of why it worked. For that matter, there was a lot that I didn't understand the "why" about.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly Like the title says
I have to admit, has some interesting stuff and information on how to make the theory of Classes to Programs, but I can not agree that is novice to professional, in my opinion I would say just novice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource...
This book is an excellent resource for anyone new to vb.net, or anyone transitioning from vb6 to vb.net.It covers the foundation of object oriented programming neccessary to successfully code in the .net environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches me a lot
I was looking for a book that really teaches about Windows NT System Programming, and I was lucky to find this one. Most of the Windows programming books will teach you MFC and maybe a little of system call (which is usually of negligible usefulness). This one exposes the inner working of Windows system. Many of the system calls in this book can also be used for Windows 9x despite the name Windows NT (cool!). The style is easy to follow. Perfect for people with C++ knowledge, and Unix programmers who want to learn Windows system programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers the Goods
Beginning Windows NT Programming is a good place to start learning how to program Win NT with the Win32 API.The author has a pleasant writing style, which makes it easier to approach this subject.I like the chapteron Threads and Processes. Some books just provide Pseudo code on theMonitor construct and Semaphore usage, however this book shows you how tobuild a simple wrapper class (easy to understand) using the Win32 API. There are other interesting chapters on file management, DLL's, Securityand Services. This is a good book, it lays a foundation for further studyon this topic.PS: No GUI or Advanced topics here.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was what I was looking for
I was looking for a book that would introduce me to NT programming without going through the usual GUI garbage that has been handled by a thousand books (and which I frankly think should be programmed in VB, notC++).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More C'ish than C++'ish
I purchased this book for a college class in Computer Science.Being already familiar with C, I was expecting that the book would get immediately into the guts of C++, i.e. Object Oriented Programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool.
Skansholm's book is concise and pragmatic. I have read both of his work on C++ and Java and it trully a must for beginners. The book is very good explaned and all programs can be run from PCs and UNIX machines. There are tons of similiar books on the market but Skansholm's work excel in both interesting examples and academically sound.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not a reference book and lack examples.
I had some prior knowledge about programming concepts before reading this book and I was glad of that. Although the book covers very basic issues as well as fairly complicated issues like data encaptulation, inheritance andpolymorphism I found the book to lack a lot of examples. It's my experiencethat only I can teach my self a given programming language through writingexamples and "play" with these. The examples in the book however, are small and always assumes you've just made the prior part of an examplea few pages back and that just doesn't work for me! It's not a bad book butyou'll need to supplement with another book to show you more examples. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to have
I have not used shell scripting in the long time. I ordered this book and it helps me refresh a lot about Unix and shell scripting leanrt in school many years ago as undergraduate student. The book is well-written and will keep you excited. One important thing is: practice as you are reading. By the time you finish the book you should be able to grab much from the book. I downloaded the Sun Solaris 9 that I installed on x86 computer and I am playing with some flavors of shell writing small shell scripts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book for Real Beginners
I came from purely Windows environment and I know nothing about UNIX or Linux except a few C commands many years ago. I tried a few books like shell scripting, learning the shell and by example, but I gave up as their speed was too fast for a beginner like me. Only after a few intro pages, these books started to write complex commands which I was confused and unable to continue. The worst thing is, most of them don't explain in details what those commands do and expect readers to know. This book does not assume you know basic UNIX commands, and it covers the basics in first section. It has short chapters and each of them tries to teach you the basic concepts in one area with simple examples. This is the book that gives you confidence to move on and it does not try to feed you with too much knowledge at a time. After reading this book, you are equipped with basic idea of what shell scripting is and able to move on with advanced books.A very good step-by-step book for beginners who know very little or nothing about UNIX shell programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of the shell!
Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy.Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Keystrokes
Very helpful if you are in medical transcription.I am not sure how this would work if you were in another field, but for med trans, it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found it very useful!
I bought this book about six months ago and have absolutely written all over it!When I saw that the only review on it was rather negative in tone, I was inspired to present my own opinion.I am a working medical transcriptionist and I have used Ms. Rolland's techniques since day one and continue to add more shortcuts to my expander list every day.It has shaved so much time off my transcriptions.I have written extensively in the "white space" as I took the shortcuts I already used and expanded them as she explains with her technique.Although it seems that it would have been lovely to have long lists of shortcuts provided, I agree with the author that providing already-assembled lists of shortcuts would have done very little good. Instead, Ms. Rolland teaches you a technique to develop your own list of shortcuts.I have used many shortcuts that she has suggested and typed them into my own lists, with any changes I deem necessary for the accounts that I actually type for.I have inherited from other transcriptionists their lists of shortcuts and have found them to be extremely non-helpful and in some ways even harmful. The author really wants you to use YOUR thought process in developing shortcuts that work for you, not for her. For example, I am extremely left-handed (my right hand is very weak and not very coordinated), so most of my shortcuts are weighted toward using the left hand: hx for hospital, sx for surgery, rx for prescription, dx for diagnosis, ds for diabetes, etc., etc., etc. But, when I talk to other people, they are shocked because they would never use that many x's.They hate trying to hit the x. Also, your own shortcuts -- that work with the way your brain thinks -- are much easier to remember.I have tried to remember other MTs shortcuts, and I can never think of them. For example, cmpy is cardiomyopathy for me, which really does not make a lot of sense, hoty is hypothyroidism (ditto), apth is adenopathy and so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Useless
Production medical transcriptionists, the tens of thousands of hard-working women and men who document your medical history, know that the key to making a living wage in this era of off-shoring, voice recognition, and EMR experiments, is the use of a word expander, software which converts 'tpcosob' to "The patient complains of shortness of breath."Yet most medical transcription schools and community colleges fail to teach students to use these valuable tools.Diana Rolland wants hers to be the textbook these schools will use when they wake up to the realities of 21st-century transcription.Unfortunately, the book is poorly written and provides little information that can't easily be found on the internet at http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php or many other sites by googling 'medical transcription productivity' or 'medical transcription expanders.'One should also explore the web sites for the expanders themselves:Instant Text, Shorthand, and Stedman's SmarType being the ones most frequently used by working MTs.Once again the publisher, Stedman's, proves how out of touch it is with the needs of the working MT:This text could have been made marginally useful with the inclusion of a CD-ROM containing a complete, sensibly worked-out beginning glossary list (in each of the above 3 expander formats) incorporating all the standard sentence particles that comprise the bulk of the reports we transcribe, as well as names of diseases, drugs, and equipment, so that those new to expander use don't have to reinvent the wheel.Instead, white space abounds on the majority of the pages as the author has provided hundreds of blank lines so that the reader can work out her or his own short forms and expansions following the examples given.Trees are crying over the publication of this text; if you must buy it, please buy it used. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars REAL-lotta-errors in this book
REALbasic is a good introductory language that lets you create programs on one platform for multiple platforms. This book, "Learning REALbasic Through Applications" is filled with typos and errors that makes it useless and frustrating for a real beginner. I helped my son through all of the chapters and exercises in this book but we were only able to do it because I already am a programmer and already know REALbasic.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the Paper its printed on
This book is poorly written. It is hard to follow along and reproduce the examples. Worse still, some examples do not work as shown. Plus, the book is way out of date. Save your money.... and find yourself another RB book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is a Good Book For Absolute Beginners
If you are brand new to programming, then this is a good book to start with.Think of this book as a RealBasic product brochure with examples.Working through the chapters gives you a quick survey of the kinds of things you can do with RealBasic, and it teaches you the RealBasic programming approach.Once you have worked some of the examples, you will find that you will start having your own ideas for building new programs. If you get a little more serious, then pick up Matt Neuburg's book and look closely at the documentation that RealBasic provides along with the program. The RealBasic tutorials may seem tedious, but they really are excellent for learning the basics of RealBasic programming.
