Best for total beginners
This book is geared for people that are brand new to Quicken entirely, not just Quicken 2007.If you have EVER used Quicken at any point in your entire life, you will find this book too elementary.I was hoping to learn some hints and tricks that I didn't already know, and perhaps how to take advantage of the improvements that Quicken 2007 offers over Quicken 2005.I didn't find that in this book.
Mutual Funds
although quicken will do quite a bit at allowing you to evaluate and review your mutual funds from several brokers at one time, mr nelson says you do not need to do this as you can get the info from the brokers directly.the quicken help screens are very frustrating.fiddle with the menus a while and you can get pretty good info on your funds. ... not for mac users
I wish I'd known when I bought this that it is exclusively for Windows users.Even though my version of Quicken is 2006 for mac, you'd think, by the way this book reads, that there is no such thing!Be warned!

VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you know how to set up Quicken to fit your needs? If you don't, then this book is for you! Author Bonnie Biafore, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical guide that explains Quicken 2006's basic features and answers questions you're likely to have, that can't be answered by the program.
Mac Users BEWARE!!
I was all excited about this book -- it sounded like just what I needed to learn Quicken. I started to read it and on page 10 I read: "This book covers the Windows version of Quicken. The program's development for Mac was completely separate-- and different--from the ground up. Accordingly, Quicken differs significantly on the two platforms." I was VERY disappointed. Nowhere in the Amazon description of this book does it mention that it is written for Windows users. Granted Mac users can probably get something out of it, but beware of what you are buying.

The Missing Manual
Just as the cover says, "The Missing Manual," and "Exactly what you need to get started."Bonnie Biafore's book is a 'techie' manual that is informative and entertaining.It's even loaded with accounting and investing information that any average hard worker can understand.

How's this for valuable advice under the heading "Ten Things You Should Do If Your Account Doesn't Balance": "Make sure you're working with the right account."
A very valuable little book
I consider myself very lucky. The person who gave me my Quicken 2004 software also gave me a copy of this book. The author has a real knack for explaining difficult things in terms that anyone can understand. He got me up to speed very soon and showed me a bunch of tricks for tracking my investments and handling tax stuff in Quicken.Read more

Not Quite the Whole Story
The book is written by insiders.They make the new CEO out to be quite a hero.Better ask some Intuit customers about that.

Great Case History of a Continuing Business Model Innovator!
How many companies have survived direct battles with Microsoft?Not very many.How many lived to win over direct battles with Microsoft?Even fewer.Intuit is in that elite company.That experience alone would make the book worth considering. Wonderful!
When Inside Intuit arrived in the mail, along with four other books I'd ordered, it was the first one I picked up to browse. Seven hours later, I finished the book! Great Source of Bad Jokes - Look Elsewhere For Useful Information

Not for my Mac
It's an excellent book--unless you have a Mac. To my disappointment, I discovered very little useful info for "the rest of us."Tip toMac users: before you purchase this book from Amazon, skim through a copy at your local bookstore and see if it's worth the price! Had I done that, I wouldn't have bought it. My fault.

Great for the beginner
Like Steve Nelson, I too am a CPA and MBA, with a JD thrown in for good measure. Unlike Steve, I don't make my living writing how-to books for software. I've been searching in vain for a book that takes a look under the hood of Quicken. As Steve points out, "[I]f you're an experienced Quicken user and want to 'take your personal accounting to the next level,' the book is probably a poor choice ... [I]f you're looking for encyclopedic coverage of all Quicken features, this is not the book for you." Regrettably, such books DON'T EXIST. If you have technical training in accounting, Quicken is a real stinkeroo because it is NOT a double-entry accounting system, but rather a sophisticated database application. It uses procedures and terminology foreign to accountants, masking much of its functionality with obscure, proprietary language and reports. Regrettably, Scott Cook (founder of Quicken) won the marketing war and now we're stuck with this beast (or MS Money, which possesses the same faults) for personal finance. Except for some obscure Linux programs, these two packages dominate the market, yet there are no publications intended for tax and accounting professionals to maximize the usefulness of this software. So if you're a beginner, dive right in and get started. If you're experienced with either Quicken or accounting or both, you're on your own. Apparently Intuit (and other publishers) want to keep us in the dark, force us to spend unconscionable amounts of time with their software, and steer customers towards Intuit's "certified" consultants. ... Quicken 2004 Premier home and business
This book DOES NOT COVER anything to do with the Small Business side of the program.I was very disappointed in it.

Excellent Reference
I needed a reference guide for Quicken 2004. After purchasing the Dummies version, this book is by far the better text. It provides clear, concise information with screen shots for all aspects of Quicken 2004 including items you may not know about. (Records Organizer Household Organizer!) Those were not mentioned in the other text. She gives suggestions for how to set up your files the way that you want. I highly recommend this book whether you are an expert or just beginning. It is well worth the price!

I purchased this book to get detailed info on various aspects of Quicken 2003 practical usage. This book offers merely a description of menus and features - no deeper insight how to tackle more serious challenges, which will inevitably arise in the moment you will create multiple checking & credit card accounts, start to transfer funds in between them, run the reports etc.Read more

Very little additional insight
There's very little in here that isn't in the help system.I've really tried to get some value out of it, but so far it hasn't told me anything that wasn't obvious.I thought that it might at least help me make some sense out of Quicken's somewhat clunky interface, but it doesn't, for the simple reason that it is a robotic transcription of the software to book form. Great book! Lots of Info!
This book has lots of step-by-step instructions and illustrations for completing tasks with Quicken. So what, right? Well, what sets this book apart from other computer how-to books is the background information the author provides about your finances. She explains all kinds of things, including investment basics, home-buying/mortgage tips, and tax info. I learned lots of things I didn't know about financial matters AND learned how Quicken can help me keep track of everything. Bravo!

Portfolio Info Missing
This book is good for a beginner.It certainly covers all the features from A to Z. My only complaint is that the Portfolio View changed significantly between Quicken 2000 and 2001.I bought this book hoping that there would be some explainations of how to use this new feature. This is a good seller!!! It was fast and the book arrived in perfect conditions.

Not Tailored for Mac Users
This book has been a bit of a disappointment since all of the screen shots and commands are from the Microsoft Windows version of Quicken.I have discovered several features and commands that are not included in the Mac software that I own.Hopefully Quicken will correct this deficiency in future editions.

Excellent Reference
This book is a must have whether you are new to Quicken or already a Quicken owner. The extra tips and new sidebars are worth reading. Quicken has so many features, you need a guide to truly get the most out of your software. Whould you know that Quicken Dexlue and Premiere come with a Household organizer and Emergency forms without the book? You don't have to read cover to cover, you can reference the sections covering the differing financial centers. I bought last year's edition and when upgrading for 2005, this was a must read. If you have Quicken or are considering purchasing, this book should be read. Maria covers all features in an easy to read format, and the screen shots are very helpful.
