Interesting, informative, and more than just schematic after schematic
I expected this book to be much more technical than it was. Rather than a collection of schematics and wiring diagrams, DerEngel combines many personal stories with the results of his work. It's quite an interesting read, although I don't know if the book will make hardware hackers out of anyone. Some people may be able to hack their modems with the ready-to-use tools the author discusses, but most people probably aren't going to want to potentially destroy their modems by cracking open the case and messing with the circuit board components. Most of the discussion takes it for granted that the reader is already be familiar with basic electrical engineering and Radio Shack. The tools he uses are Windows programs, so unix users may need to find similar tools to follow along with the hacks.

An excellent introduction to MPLS
An excellent intro to MPLS. It covers in the first four chapters the technical reasons to develop such a technology, data (Ipsilon)and control (Cisco Tag Switching) driven IP switching technologies.
Exceptional
With ever increasing demand for performance, scalability and efficiency, new technologies/protocols are born with ever increasing complexity creating a fertile ground for authors/publishers to write cut and paste books. Most of these authors do not have a sound and broad enough background to describe the subject matter well. Bruce Davie and Yakov Rekther are rare exceptions. Their deepknowledge shines through the pages. It may not be the most detailed book on the market about the subject. But who can complain, when you can learn 80 percent of the technology for 20 percent of the time invested. If you want to learn about routing in general and MPLS in particular, please buy this book. I have shelf full of books buy the other authors gathering dust.

A huge disappointment
I bought this book seeking for an in-depth AJAX reference as it was described by its editors as well as by other reviewers on the net. I found myself reading an entry-level, low-horizon compilation of Google results, stuffed with lots of duplicate, narrow-scoped, non-optimal and non-reusable code chunks.

Understand technology behind without reading T11 standards
This book is quite dry, no question about that, but not as dry as the standards published by organizations in charge with Fibre Channel standards. Yet, as a SAN designer or SAN administrator you can find in it all the information you need to understand the inner details of a Loop Insertion Primitive or how an Alternate buffer-to-buffer credit model works. Compared with other books on the subject is remarcably error free and I was nicely impressed by Mr. Clark's considerations upon what should be the customer' role in steering vendors in developing products that are more open and interoperate better.

Very detailed description of SAN technology
This was a very good overview of the many varied components and technologies that make up a storage area network.It goes into a lot of detail about things like standards, protocols, speeds, etc.If you want to understand the differences between iSCSI and FCIP, for example, this is the book for you.The word "Reference" in the subtitle is accurate.It's not a guide on how to administer a SAN day-to-day in the real-world; it's about the concepts and details of what a SAN really is.The writing style is a little dry, but I didn't expect it to be a page-turner.My only disappointment was when I realized that over 1/4 of the book is devoted to appendices, glossary and index instead of written content. ... Too shallow from a research point of view
This book contains mostly of introductory content. It provides too much background knowledge but never goes into the core of any technical problems, so the book is definitely too shallow for any serious researcher. Moreover, as it lacks implementation details and case studies, I don't think developers will find it useful, either. Maybe it serves best the executives who want to know what data broadcasting is and for what data broadcasting can be used.

Not so much info on 2.5G technologies.
What would you expect from a book titled "2G to 3G" ? GPRS and EDGE right ? However this book pays little attention on these technologies and barely mention them in a few pages. I would expect more GPRS and EDGE from a 800 paged book. It is still good book to keep as a reference though, since it covers broad range of wireless technologies in some detail.

Covers IS-95 evolution to 3G systems in some detail
Like the author's other books, this one's emphasis is on the radio access network. The evolution of 2G to 3G dealt with here is specifically that for CDMA-based systems, since one-third of the book is concerned with the IS-95 standard. The next third has condensed but useful descriptions of the WCDMA and cdma2000 standards, and the final one is a hodgepodge of WLL, WLAN, WAP, Bluetooth, and radio planning and management. It's a very good book, it presents 3g concepts as well as other wireless networks. It has some practical examples, which makes complex concepts more clear. For a deep explanation of CDMA concepts and mathematics, you would need another book, but with this one you can get a more practical approach to CDMA. After reading this book, you would have a very precise idea of what is next in telecommunicactions. in fact, it just explains more deeperly than the ccnp routing book and don't get the step that expounds the routing protocols throughout. Good Book - but not study material
This is definately not a book to use to study for your CCIE, but it contains an amazing amount of information on a wealth of different topics from Routing protocols(including BGP4), APPN, SNA, ATM, Multicast, etc. It will sit on my desk as a great reference.

Case studies - nothing more.
It's really just a case studies book. If you want to look at typical examples how people use Cisco equipment - it's a right choice. But if you want to dig deeper in some particular area, or if you want to learn networking background you should read something else. Read more

Excellent Material
I really congratulate the author on maintaining this edition fresh. I actually come from an IT Systems and apps area.When I had to take the deep dive into Telecom and specially into SS7 I was suggested Russels 2nd edition and thats all that I needed to jump in.Simple, crisp and great images.

Not for the technically weak....
Traffic Engineering with MPLS(ISBN 1587050315) Excellent book - not for the technically weak.
As most CCIE's do, I ventured out in search of my next technical mastery. After reading the MPLS and VPN Architectures book from Cisco Press, I decided to venture onward into the Traffic Engineering aspect of MPLS. WoW! There sure is a lot of information out there and this book does a good job on covering the in depth details of the topic.I would however not recommend this book if you haven't read the first book mentioned as a primer/base for your MPLS knowledge because this one dives in deep very quickly. Only book of it's type

good start to this field
VoIP is becoming ever more popular. Indeed, there are predictions that ultimately most of conventional phone calls will be transmitted in this manner. So you may well be tempted to learn it. If you already have a good background in communications and networking, then Shepard's book might be a useful choice. He gives a cram course that covers the essentials in a rapid fashion.
