5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book covers all the objectives of SCJP 5.0 and moreover in an excellent manner. What I liked most is that this book makes you well aware of what exactly is in the exam and what is not. For instance, the exam objectives include classes like String, DateFormat, File and so on. These classes contain a lot of methods. This book will tell you which you need to know for the exam. This saves a lot of time and effort. To conclude - don't think just buy it and success will follow!!! I passed my SCJP 5.0 with 93%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for those with experience
I used this book to help me pass the exam the first time. The book gives you a lot of helpful tips to write the test. The practice exams are really good. Each topic was covered fairly thoroughly in both tests. The book is definitely worth the money. Even though the book does go over the fundamentals, I don't think the book covers the fundamentals (OO design, Java Basics) well enough for a novice developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference material.
This book was all I referred to to get my certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I coul give it 6 stars I would give it 7!
Not only the content is way to complete for the exam and the real life, the learning metodology is a work of art, it is very light to read (unlike other technical books that dry your brain in one hour).
5-0 out of 5 stars Authors have clarity
Authors know the stuff. They didn't just reformat the contents from other places to make this book
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough End-to-End Examples
This book has its strong points and weakness. It explains certain concepts really well. However it did not have much end-to-end exercise for people to practice. Only 1 end-to-end example in the entire book as I recall. Therefore, it is hard to sink in what you have read. Especially, jsp and servlets need to have multiple pieces put together in order to make the application run. The example does not need to be complehansive, but will help the readers to put all the pieces together. If you are looking for examples to guide you through, then this book is not for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars JAVA is truly agile, thanks to Anil Hemrajani!
I just read this book, Agile Java Development with Spring, Hibernate and Eclipse, and I find it the best Java book ever written on earth...Never have I read anything as clear and industry-driven as your book..Thanks for the clear explanation!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A great book, too bad you need to read it twice.
I've read a lot of books, of which many are conceptual, academic or technical or just hands-on cookbooks. The problem with "Agile Java Development with..." is that it fits none of the above categories. It feels like an attempt to a hands-on experience kind of book (there's a lot of "Let's get to the action!" phrases and then fails to deliver and just discusses another subject), but Raj delivers mostly academic unstructured comments on every aspect of the subject matter. Don't get me wrong, the book has all the information you need to get started and learn tons more from references Raj gives you, but the problem is: there's no structure to his story telling. For example, In every chapter when he's discussing a subject, he tends to reference/compare to other subjects that haven't been covered yet; he even adds a "(as covered in Chapter X)". Seriously, you actually have to have read the book in order to understand many of the comparisons and references he makes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good "Agile Java" command line to GUI tutorial using the Spring/Hibernate/Eclipse
Having spent most of my last couple of years using Eclipse based GUI to build Java web apps, I don't have much exposure to doing it at the command line.Mainly I have never used Ant because the GUI tools shelter me from it nicely. But this book did a very good job of starting at the command line and then eventually moving to using Eclipse. It covered a great deal of ground but well enough to whet your appetite to look further into a wide variety of technologies surrounding "Agile Java .." development.

Does this sound familiar? You know Java well enough to write standalone applets and applications, even multithreaded ones, but you know next to nothing about the language's networking capabilities. And guess what--your next job is to write a network-centric Java program. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
I bought it to prepare my class
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is certainly a good reference book for me when I need to know about network programming using Java.As you all know, Java Network Programming is a vast subject, on which a single book can make no justice of.But Elliotte has tried and he is successful with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive reference (3rd Edition)
If you're doing anything with Java and Network I/O programming, the topic will most likely be covered in this book. The author does a great job describing not only how Java handles network programming, but the concepts and details of network programming in general. The book takes the core java.net classes and describes each method, what it does, how to use it, what to watch for, code examples, etc - it takes the API Javadoc and expands upon it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but obselete
The concepts in the book are well explained and i think its a good book for abeginner programmer butobsolete for sun java certification 1.5.

5-0 out of 5 stars very deep... great for hardcore java programmer
i buy this book together with kathy's book and have passed the exam with 95% score. i found the exam very easy (although i still missed 3 of the 61 questions), i guess it's because i have read this whole book thoroughly. kathy's book is very good too but just covers what you really need to pass the exam. this book goes a step further by explaining each concept thoroughly, more than you need to pass the exam. if you want to have deep knowledge of how java works, and not just merely to pass the exam, then this is the best book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book for the SCJP eggjam!
I find this fascinating experience learning newer features in java with this book. I thought I knew most of it, but NOPE, I had missed here and there. There are so many little things which we think we know but we might not actually know how to apply that in practical. I would surely reccomend this to anyone taking the eggjam (exam :-) ) It covers all the beginner level java programming concept in detail. U will be gaining a lot by practicing the end of chapter excercise. Go for it and buy this book without blinking.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed because I expected more from this book.
I have been reading through the book. Actually it provides very clear explanations, but I had the impression the author talks too much and keep saying the same things over and over again. The book could be half its volume with the same content of knowledge. Besides the provided examples are a bit too simple and obvious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book on neural networks using Java
Programming Neural Networks in Java will show the intermediate to advanced Java programmer how to create neural networks. This book attempts to teach neural network programming through two mechanisms. First the reader is shown how to create a reusable neural network package that could be used in any Java program. Second, this reusable neural network package is applied to several real world problems that are commonly faced by programmers. This book covers such topics as Kohonen neural networks, multi layer neural networks, training, back propagation, and many other topics. The content of the book is as follows: 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique book
I have received my copy of the book and I can't put it down. It has been great help with my AI research at the University. I have the other book from the same author "Programming Spiders, Bots and Aggregators in Java" and I have the same comments for both. Both are easy to read, have precise information and great code. Chapter 7 of this book "OCR with Kohonen Neural Network" makes the book more than worth it. Great stuff. I hope the author does not stop and keep writting books like these. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning AI and also experienced programmers alike. The author makes though topics seem easy. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
Reading and understanding the content of this book, and the one written by 'Sierra and Bates', are the major contributing factors in getting me a 91% passing grade on the first attempt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed SCJP the first attempt.
This is an excellent study resource and I would recommend it to anyone pursuing their java programmer certification.Be sure to suppliment this book with plenty of practice tests and you should do fine on the exam.Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on non-j2ee java.
I have read over a dozen books on the java and this by far the best one for learning the language in its entirety.Obviously, this book can't cover everything but it gives a very thorough and in-depth introduction. If you can only have one book on java 2, make this the one you pick. Many other books on the subject waste tons of space with simple examples that aren't very informative. This book cuts through the nonsense and gives you all it can in its 700 pages.Great explanations, Great Code Samples, all around top notch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
This is an excellent book, and the only book that you can use to learn Java programming basics while preparing for the exam. I have always wondered why such a book did not exist. After all, who can determine better than Sun, a basic course in Java, and Sun does it by determining the SCJP exam objectives. This book is like a course in basic Java programming within the scope of the SCJP exam objectives. The author combines the two tasks (teaching basic Java programming and preparing you for the SCJP exam) very successfully without going beyond the scope of the exam objectives (Chapter 1 is the only extra addition). He does it by shuffling the exam objectives around and by using his classroom kind of presentation style. There is a perfect logical flow throughout the book:I love the way the material is presented and how all the concepts are clearly defined. It has removed many ambiguities, doubts, and confusions that I had about some concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Java 5 Programming Book
I already have the SCJP certification for an older Java version. Now I would like to get certification for J2SE 5. So I bought this book. Like the SCBCD Exam Study Kit by the same author, this book explains all the concepts in a way that is easy to read and understand. I especially like the complete code examples that I'm experimenting with and the Exam's Eye View section that highlights the important concepts. The Exam Quick Prep Appendix is also cool. Will be helpful to skim through important points before the exam. Visuals, tables, notes, cautions are all in right amount and very helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book: He Did It Again
This is a great SCJP certification book which can also be used to learn basic Java programming. Previously, I used Dr. Sanghera's SCBCD Exam Study Kit (from Manning) to pass my SCBCD exam, and liked that book very much. Now, I have read this book from cover to cover to upgrade my SCJP certification, and I would say: He did it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great one for SCJD
It is one of the best books on latest version of SCJD J2SE5. It gives you insight of project and way to complete your SCJD project with confidence. You should buy if you are preparing for SCJD like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for SCJD and standalone
Most of the time people who are preparing for SCJD will buy this book but it is good beyond that. Second edition give you practical example on actual project. It is kind of parallel to what you are doing in SCJD. Author is active member on javaranch and gives very useful tips to all post in SCJD forum. I think people who want to improve Java skills on application side should look into this book as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars SCJD Exam with J2SE 5
Let's face it.The Sun Certified Java Developers Exam is tough. If you are serious about passing, this is an excellent book for anyone wishing to avoid the common pitfalls associated with many of the projects. The authors reveal various approaches to many of the issues that need to be resolved, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of each.I found the authors' information on Threading, Building the GUI, logging, configuration, RMI vs. Sockets and "putting it all together" all extremely helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best instructional books Ive read!
If not for its minor typo errors in the text and code, I would have given this book 5 stars.5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
One of the best books I've purchased.4-0 out of 5 stars Simple to understand, but I prefer a bit of complexity. . .
Most of my experience in network programming comes from W. Richard Stevens' "UNIX Network Programming", where there's lots of detail in the TCP/IP protocol, and using C to implement it. At the time, the professor teaching the course tried to provide us with comparable programs in Java, but not having a good Java networking book to consult from was a drawback to those segues.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect mix of Bluetooth and Java
My prior knowledge about Bluetooth can be described with one word-superficial. Therefore, I hail the authors for making a brave move. The book is not just an introduction to the Bluetooth Java APIs but also an introduction to the whole Bluetooth architecture and terminology. The fact that a lot of space is used to explain the underlying protocols specified in the Bluetooth specification can be both a godsend and a sleeping pill. For me, it was a godsend...Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes, Mistakes, and more Mistakes
I find it hard to believe that a study guide this error ridden was ever released given the gross errors my study group has found. We feel a lack of confidence in the material presented in this text and in the authors in particular. We have to verify everything presented in this text and believe nothing to be true without doing so. This is not a good way to study for a certification exam. We need a trusted and reliable reference, not a work of fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars hides some of the complexity of Globus
Will Globus ever be successful? It is very specialised, and currently it seems only a few universities and companies use it. To encourage greater uptake, this book shows how to write various Java services in Globus. An acknowledgment of Java's popularity, in part driven by the relative ease of programming in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Learning Java From the Bug Kings?
I bought this software primarily to get another angle on the certification test, but this software is unusable!2-0 out of 5 stars Just buy the book
The software basically covers the SAME EXACT INFO as the book and 99.99% of the times its word for word the same. Why spend extra money ? Just get the book. Also, on my computer there were about 15 - 20 test questions where some html tags were not interpreted properly and were therefore indecipherable in some cases (I do know HTML). The book is great. Just get the book. The authors could have did a lot more with this concept, but sadly they didn't.I did pass the SCJP test and their book helped a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must-have" software for the serious Java Cert student
This is an excellent tool not only for learning ALL of the Java Certification material but also for charting the progress of your study. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated!
This book was good during it's time, but now it is outdated. The book is designed for SCWCD 1.3, and did a great job covering all the topics. However, Sun Microsystem discontinued SCWCD 1.3 on December 2004. So, if you are like me, disappointed with head first books and looking to be certified as fast as possible, do yourself a favor and buy the second edition of this book. You won't regret it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Test Preparation Material for SCWCD 1.3
This is not only a good book for SCWCD 1.3 exam, but also a good reference for web application development. I read this book thoroughly and took some mock exams available in the internet, then i appeared for the real exam. I got 98%. I would strongly recommend this book for customers to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need
This book is all you need to pass the SCWCD Exam in the 1.3 version, I studied extra subjects in order to pass the 1.4 version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I used this book as a primary preparation tool for the Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD) exam. Being a beginner in EJB, I found this book to be very friendly. I liked the layout of the book in general and the writing style of the author in particular. Only relevant pieces of code are presented to focus explanation of topic in question. A complete running application may be downloaded from the author's website. The multiple choice questions at the end of every chapter and ALERTs in every chapter made remembering main points easier. Deployment descriptor elements are clarified in considerable detail and they are explained well. Please note that there are errors in this book - some of them are fairly obvious such as using a capital letter as opposed to a small letter (Java versus java) while others are not so obvious but noticeable by experienced java developers. Regardless of its minor faults, I consider this book to be a valuable addition to my library. Normally I would have a cut a star for the errors but because of its content quality, I felt compelled to give 5 stars. I just passed the exam today thanks to this book. I know that I will not hesitate to buy another book from this author. Thanks Mr.Sanghera! I recommend this book highly without any reservations whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars SCBCD Exam Study Kit
This is a very good book on a complex subject. Explanations of the concepts are easy to understand. Exam objectives are covered in detail with example codes and review questions.
5-0 out of 5 stars great work
After the exams SCJP,SCWCD; I decided to learn and take the SCBCD certification. I'd not had any clue about enterprise beans before the exam. I'd started many books about EJB and EJB exams but I got bored all of them. I also tried to read Sun's specs but it was hard for a beginner. Then I bought Sanghera`s SCBCD Exam kit. It was really good for a beginner, easy to read. In fact it was like a novel, I could not stop reading it. After a month I passed exam with %90. I really recommend this book. Now I fell like I am an expert in this topic. When I design and write codes related with EJB, It's a good thing to know what is what and what is going t
