4-0 out of 5 stars Good starter java book when bridging from COBOL
I found this book to be much more helpful in explaining the basics than other books whose audience was former C programmers. Most people talk about OO programming as some new high-faluting process that the mainframe COBOL programmer will have great difficulty understanding. As I am in a shop that makes much use of copybooks and called subroutines, I could relate to Byrne's explanations. They took away the mystique of OO programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Java for Cobol Programmers
This is not a bad book for the Cobol programmers who are trying to learn Object Oriented language Java. Very good parallels between classes and Cobol subroutine. Most of the Java books are written by former C++ programmers, who do not know Cobol. But Mr. Burne trying find some common ground between Java and Cobol, to simplify learning. I gave it 4 stars, it would be nice to have some Input and Output File processing, GUI and JDBC coverages. But over all, this is much better book than Doke and Hardgrave book with similar title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not to bad - but could have been better.
I had heard that this was a really good book for COBOL programmers who were now learning Java. It didn't really tie the two together very well. The author obviously has not keep up with the innovation in COBOL over the last few years. COBOL for MVS has FUNCTIONs that would have made better examples in some places. After completing this book I felt that it didn't really tell may much more that the other intro to Java books I had read. And the last chapters really lost me. It jumped from entry level stuff to chapters that seemed to be taken from some technical presentation. To me the next step should have been how Java does external data I/O. After I completed this book, I found that the book that I really wanted was "Java for the COBOL Programmer (Advances in Object Technology". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars quick to get started with clearcase, ant & cruisecontrol
"IBM Rational ClearCase, Ant and CruiseControl" walks the reader through setting up automated builds. It is useful if you are doing exactly what the book discusses. In particular, you should be using all three of these technologies and want to do standard builds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping your management buy into Ruby...
It's not a difficult sell to get a technology geek to understand and try out a new language. But getting your management to buy into it can be nearly impossible.Bruce Tate makes a convincing case for moving to Ruby in the book From Java to Ruby - Things Every Manager Should Know.
4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the conversation!
The only complaint I have with this book is that it is difficult to listen objectively to an Evangelical. The title of the book and its presence in the PragProg Ruby series reveal Bruce's conclusion in most cases (although don't worry, he does agree that Java may still be your answer if your pain measurements align that way).
5-0 out of 5 stars Feed this to your manager
I am primarily a Java developer, although I spent more than my fair share of time with management responsibilities and interfacing with 'senior management'.In recent months, I have been investigating the hype surrounding Ruby on Rails.I originally thought "Ruby isn't a 'real' language", and "Bruce is just trying to cash in on some controversy".I have now spent about 4 months doing some small rails projects, and I am looking for more opportunities to move my career in this direction.I am impressed, and I suggest any software engineer who primarily uses Java to create web-based CRUD applications to take a good look at rails.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for those use to simpler editors
I was use to using a much simpler editor for writing Java code. This book did a very good job helping with learning how to use Eclipse.

3-0 out of 5 stars too much padding
The book has some useful information, but does not
3-0 out of 5 stars Handy Starters' Reference to Eclipse
After getting used to the fundamentals of the Java programming language, a versatile integrated development environment like Eclipse would bring developers to next level of productivity, and Eclipse Cookbook is handy for the start.Readers are guided step-by-step with numerous illustrations about its support for tasks from creating packages, classes, methods to refactoring, and debugging. The book demonstrates Eclipse 2.1.2 with the difference of early release of version 3.0 being mentioned. Now when versions 3.0.1 and 3.1M are readily available, you might need to resort to online help for the exact updated steps. You will find the use of application programming interface of platform dependent SWT for building GUI with both AWT and Swing being mixed. However, it gets nothing to do with the drag-and-drop style of building graphical components.Web development is included but too concise. No elaborated features like performance profiling or modeling tool of round-trip development are described.Perhaps it would be more appropriate to introduce to target audience with various commonly referred plug-ins on tasks like integrating with different kinds of version control, validating XML, modeling UML, and J2EE support. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More design than implementation
I am taking a masters course in designing J2EE applications, and this book has been incredibly helpful. It shows the design of a web-based application, with sample use-cases, sequence diagrams, and deployment diagrams. It is light on the actual code, but you can get that from the online J2EE tutorial from SUN.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too much info
This book is tremendous on theory, but horrible on actual usage.I picked it up several times and was never able to get through it, and I don't believe you could ever get an entire team of developers to read, understand and implement the theories in this book.1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst technical book I have ever read

3-0 out of 5 stars read dummies first
if you have no Java experience, this book throws you into the deep end of the pool right away. I purchased 3 books on leaning java for a beginner. This was the most valuable in the long run albeit the most difficult. There is no hand holding and lots of good examples with few mistakes and lots of multiple examples within a single example (confused, read the book and you'll see what I mean). I suggest you get this book but if you need hand holding, also bur Burd's java for dummes to start with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning--but won't get you "home"
This is a really good very basic intro--but it won't get you to a level of Sun exam competency because it shyes away from some of the crucial distinctions you need to know--like multidimensional arrays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for programmers with general knowledge
I bought this book and thought the programming projects in the book were awesome. All of the exercises are taught for use in game programming. While the author probably doesn't explain the language and fundamentals in depth (rather terse), he explains the fundamentals of how the games work.I've read Deitel's Java How To Program, and I recommend that to any Java beginners. If you want to learn how to program games in Java such as minesweeper, tetris, and others, get this book! It's awesome! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for getting a preview of Struts 2.0
In the shadow of the most popular java web framework (Apache Struts) grew another great framework that seemed to learn from all the limitations that still frustrate many developers using the struts 1.x codebase. It has been announced that Struts 2.0 will be based on the WebWork 2.2.x code. Since there are no Struts 2.0 books at the time of this review, this is the best place to start learning the future of Struts ahead of pack. The book is well written and I found it be a good introduction to MVC development in general. Very thorough. The only thing that prevents the 5th star is the fact that after the book was published they decided to use Spring IOC as their default IOC container. While this is great decision, it also means that the whole section on the webwork's internal IOC container that got dropped is pretty much dead paper. Otherwise, great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for getting started with WebWork
This is an excellent book that covers all of the significant features in WebWork: configuration, actions, interceptors, Inversion of Control, OGNL, JSP tags, validation and localization. There is even a chapter on best practices including ways to test WebWork without deploying to the application server over and over again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Webwork in Action is a great introdiction to Struts 2.0
I read Webwork in Action (Patrick Lightbody and Jason Carreira) over the holidays while waiting for my wife to give birth to our third child. It wasn't so much that I was bored and had nothing to do but it was just that I couldn't put the book down.It really is an engaging read. What surprised me was how well it was written relative to other framework books I have read.I actually used Webwork 1 a bit when it first was released and then switched to Struts because that was where my work was taking me.I now wish I had stuck with it for many reasons. The framework itself is IMHO the best request driven framework out there. It is a deserving successor to Struts and I look forward to using it everywhere I can.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's Java tutorial
As the title says: "Beginning...", so the experts that wrote a review shouldnt be angry. The author explains every term he uses [excellent teaching practice!], does not assume that you should "of course" "know" this... Naturally, if you are an experieneced progammer this book may be too long, but alas: read faster in this case.
1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE Editing - Great Book!, Highly Recommended
This is a great book, and the longest that I have ever read. Ivor's teaching approach, although frustrating and daunting, effectively teaches the language concepts you need to begin programming. You will find yourself adding code to an example and redoing it later and redoing it later... each time learning a tiny bit about design and some about the Java language. The big example (a drawing program called Sketcher) is developed over several chapters and is used to demonstrate all sorts of language features including a good intro into Swing.Even though I feel that this is a fairly solid book that I would recommend, I am only giving it 1 star to bias my vote and communicate a message to Wrox:Hire at least one book editor that has some quality standards. The book is fraught with mistakes (most don't appear in the Errata as of 2/16/06).

1-0 out of 5 stars ... a very poor programming book
The book is rife of unsound programming practices. On the cover, 'Ivan' tells you how good his style is and how he'll teach you a marketable skill - what he teaches you is how to write second rate scratch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in depth book on Aspect J
I found the concepts of AspectJ cool but the book seems choppy and too complex to follow. The Eclipse AspectJ tools seem very complicated and busy on the screen. The book could have had a better flow and a lighter introduction.Possibly starting out as a "language" book versus a tool book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm finally beginning to understand AOP...
Since my last attempt to get a book to learn about AspectJ wasn't very productive, I decided to try again with Eclipse AspectJ: Aspect-Oriented Programming with AspectJ and the Eclipse AspectJ Development Tools by Adrian Colyer, Andy Clement, George Harley, and Matthew Webster.*Much*, much better...

5-0 out of 5 stars Geary Rocks on JSP! Excellent author
I have seen David Geary speak and have read his writing many times and there is no one I know that makes JSP more interesting or more understandable. Core JSTL: Mastering the JSP Standard Tag Library is easily the best book on the subject I have read, or used in practice, or recommended to others. It is clear, concise, and logical. Trust me on this one... you will be a fan of Geary and his books after reading this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent choice
I would really recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn JAVA Wireless. The authors really explain the architecture of J2ME really well and better then the average book on J2ME.They have a good chapter on VXML, WML, and WMLSRIPT. You need to be an experienced developer to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to add Wireless Java skills to your resume?
Just got this book and have read most of it. Finally a Wireless Java book that talks about something more than J2ME! The campus portal app is a nice touch and ties all of the previous discussions together. Great fluff-free chapters on MIDP, Web Services, and VoiceXML. I also liked the underlying theme of tying everything together with J2EE.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Wireless Book
This is the best Wireless programming book I have found. It helps enhance your Wireless skill set while leveraging your existing Java knowledge, and shows how to actually combine today's wireless technologies for real business applications. It takes a great, all-encompassing approach, and the end-to-end Campus Portal application pull everything together. This book gives you everything you need. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Be sure to buy the updated version (also on Amazon)
There is an updated printing of this book that uses ISBN 0-321-32202-7. The updated printing (which corrects small but important changes from the final version of Java 5) also is called the 4th edition. The publisher added words "Java 5.0 Version" to the title listed in online stores, and added a leaf with the words "Covers Java 5.0" to the bottom right of the cover.Be sure to verify that you get this ISBN, and do not to buy an old printing that you can't return.
1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware-Horrendous Book!!
I feel so sorry for all of the students out there who are struggling with this book, you arent alone! This book is poorly written, there is so much detail that I cannot follow the concepts. The chapters dont build on the previous ones. Worst of all, no answers are provided for the HUGE amount of exercises and programming projects. I am now in search of a better book to help me salvage my GPA. Thanks alot Lewis and Loftus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neat little guide to reflective programming
Java Reflection is an extremely powerful API that most modern frameworks like Spring, Hibernate, XFire, JUnit etc., use as its core enabling technology. We all use these frameworks for our applications, but never really bothered to see how the framework achieves certain things that it does.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any Java developer
If, for any reason I had to keep only 10 Java books, this one would have made this list. It's consise, up to the point and covers not only Java reflection, but many other important subjects such as class loaders, design patterns, design with interfaces, proxies, et al.
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost great
This book presents an unusual but surprisingly important Java API, the one that underlies component technologies, dynamic loading, and more. Reflection isn't just for ubergeeks writing debuggers and similarly gutsy applications, it can help with everyday tasks of many kinds. The Formans show how, using many examples and a friendly but technically dense style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information from Author
To see the book cover, detailed table of contents, and
5-0 out of 5 stars The knowledge to fulfill your imagination.
The book is well written and concise with many wonderful examples to support the text. The combination of both web design and web programming into a single resource is inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book spanning all aspects of web design.
This is an excellent book that covers all aspects of web development. To often are programmers unconcerned with the aesthetics representing the code they create. However it does not matter how functional your site is if the user cannot enjoy it, understand it and navigate it. That is where this book fits in. It is the perfect medium between the programming world and the design world. If read cover to cover this book can give even the most inexperienced reader the skills needed for professional web development. It is well organized and laid out in a manor perfect for the classroom environment. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in web development. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of class
The best and most thorough treatment of transaction management I have seen.I've bought copies for myself and my engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, readable and great perspective.
This book has the most comprehensive coverage of current transactional systems and standards in Java. A cursory look through the index might seem that what this book contains has already been covered in hundreds of articles, specifications and books - but that's not what it is about. Starting from the original transactional models, it's an entertaining journey through how they were mapped to Java, the integration technologies like JCA, till we reach WS-Transactions of today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Container implementation
A great read, but it would be even better if the authors could provide actual examples of how today's popular containers like BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss implements it ?

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best instructional books Ive read!
If not for its minor typo errors in the text and code, I would have given this book 5 stars.5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
One of the best books I've purchased.4-0 out of 5 stars Simple to understand, but I prefer a bit of complexity. . .
Most of my experience in network programming comes from W. Richard Stevens' "UNIX Network Programming", where there's lots of detail in the TCP/IP protocol, and using C to implement it. At the time, the professor teaching the course tried to provide us with comparable programs in Java, but not having a good Java networking book to consult from was a drawback to those segues.Read more
