2-0 out of 5 stars Tunnelvision
Using this book is like driving without peripheral vision - you can't take the slightest turn off the single path chosen by the authors. Sure, this book will walk you through making a stateless session bean and deploying it on JBoss. But what if you want to make a client? What if you want to use the Eclipse IDE provided by JBoss? Suddenly, you're left on your own. This book may be helpful to someone making a first pass through J2EE, but if you want to use JBoss for any practical purpose, this book is practically worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
As an employee of a company that develops web based applications, but not a software engineer in that company, Tom Marrs and Scott Davis's text does a terrific job in putting the disparate pieces that make up a J2EE application together.Their approach of incrementally adding the requisite technologies from each tier, as they carry through a single example, provides remarkable clarity to the discussions of each piece.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the "nuts and bolts" of a J2EE application. My only caveat is to make sure you read the README.txt file when you download the source code.If you've downloaded a JBoss version later than 4.0.1 (current is 4.0.4) then the code examples beginning in Chapter 5 won't work. The needed change, discussed in the README file, is simple, clearly indicated and works throughout the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guide to JBoss and J2EE
J2EE started out as a specification that left the implementation to each container vendor. It's readily apparent that two of the earliest vendors, WebSphere and WebLogic, implemented J2EE in vastly different ways. As a result, early books on J2EE or Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) frequently either avoided or severely limited the discussion of a specific server because the details were better referenced from server vendors' manuals. JBoss changed that picture. It is an open source Java-based application server which is freely downloadable, plus it is a certified J2EE server.

5-0 out of 5 stars An architect's treasure
This book has outstanding breadth of information for system architecture. Some details are quite basic, while others are quite indepth. Overall though, what's most important is that the book is very well written and serves its purpose well. It has many excellent strategies, along with a comprehensive feature list of most J2EE projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concepts applicable in J2EE as well as .NET
I develop applications using J2EE and .NET. I found that mostconcepts found in this book are equally applicable to the .NET arena as well. Good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some technical aspects are missing
While whole book has enough details on plugins UI part, there is no information on third-party integration and plugin class loading issue is not covered enough (authors offer you to write your own jar class loader). Also missed a sample on PreferenceManager usage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted...
I suppose this is more of a praise of Eclipse plug-in architecture and available documentation than a review of the book per se, but I did not get from Eclipse: Building Commercial-Quality Plug-ins anything I could not by scanning online docs and playing with Eclipse myself. I was up and running with my plug-in project in a very short time without opening this book, 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Eclipse 3.1/3.2 with lots of tips and detailed diagrams
I read the first edition two years ago and it was the best book at the time on Eclipse 3.0. I learned so much from the first edition, that I got the second edition for Eclipse 3.1 and 3.2 as soon as it was available. I was pleased to see that the authors had completely updated the book to cover the latest versions of Eclipse. All of the negative comments that I see appear to be about the first edition (which is for Eclipse 3.0 and is now out of date) rather than the newer second edition. That really is unfortunate as there is no better book on Eclipse plugin development available. Period.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Buy...
An excellent book -- here's why:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
What I like about this book compared to others, is that it gives clear concise descriptions. The chapters (or modules) are well thought out and the examples complement what the subject matter is addressing. I've bought other books on JavaScript, and I must say that (as a beginner) this is a treasure. It is exactly what I was looking for and by just reading the first few chapters has given me a great insight into this coding language. To me there is no better book on the market. You won't go wrong to get this book if you want to get a solid foundation in JavaScript. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
I have no programming experience and am teaching myself JavaScript. I tried a couple of other books, which left me feeling frustrated-even if they were supposed to be for beginners. Desperate, I tried this one and am happy to say that I'm writing small scripts and becoming familiar with all the different options.

4-0 out of 5 stars The reference book of the Java programming language (up to J2SE 5.0)
This book presents the basics of the Java programming language. Java is an object-oriented programming language, with a syntax inspired from the C and C++ programming languages [1, 2]. An important distinction must be made between the different parts of what is traditionally referred to as Java. Java is made of four parts: Java the programming language [3], Java the virtual machine [4], Java the standard set of libraries [5], and Java the specifications [6, 7]. This book is about the programming language.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Java Bible
If you want to understand Java inside out, this is the book for you. It is equivalent of "The C++ programming language" by Stroustrup and the original "K&R" for Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the Core series! Awsome job!
This is an excellent book for all Security Practitioners. FromIdentity Managment to Mutli-factor athentication this book provides examples and clear description of many important concepts. The bookcovers enterprise patterns for access contol, federatation and identity management. Like the J2ee patterns, I see this book being an important/practical addition for the security community.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic security book for java guys
I picked this book to read about using smartcard and biometrics in j2ee application. I am really amazed to see, this is the only book in the market to illustrate how to put together all three factors of authentication in a j2ee application. More compelling, the authors did a terrific job to cover every possible security option that adds value to j2ee application. The patterns and best practices for application security architecture and design strategies for the presentation tier, business tier, and Webservices tier of j2ee platform are very promising and helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for All Security Architects
I have found all the Sun "Core" Java books to be at cut above, but this one differs in that while obviously Java-centric, much of the patterns dicussed are relevant to all development platforms. I'd recommend this book to developers and architects of web services and web applications regardless of their preferred development environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 struts tutorial
I was just asssigned to a Struts project with a short deadline and I have only been working in Java for 6 months from a background in Cobol and mainframes. I bought the Manning Struts book, but was disappointed in its content not up to date. The Oreilly book didn't seem goodd as a tutorial so I got the complete reference book. This is the #1 book in my opinion. Great tutorial of Struts for this newbie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful tutorial and a great reference book!
I tried reading at least two other books on Struts. However, I wish I had read this one first.I found the explanations clear, simple and conscise.I keep my copy at my desk, close to me, as someone in my office is always in need of a Struts reference.I have recommended it often to the junior programmers on my team, as a reasonable and understandable introduction to Struts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Core Java(TM) 2, Volume II--Advanced Features (7th Edition)
If you have ay experiece with another programming language ad you want to get up to speed fast with Java the this book and its companion, Core Java(TM) 2, Volume I, are must haves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear but brief overview of advanced features of J2SE 1.5
This book does not substitute for all of the specialized books on the subjects that it covers, and it is by no means encyclopedic in scope. However, even in its 7th edition it is still the best and the clearest overview of advanced features of the language for Java 1.5. What is particularly nice is that the author has split his Core Java series up such that if your goal is just to learn the language you need only buy volume one, and if your goal is to get a handle on the changes in the advanced features of the language you need only buy volume 2. They are pretty much independent of one another. Add to that the fact that both of these volumes can be found used for about $20 each, and it is definitely worth the purchase. The writing style is very clear with much sample code. The author even gives a little bit of background showing how each feature of the language has changed over the years.I notice that Amazon only shows the table of contents for the previous edition, so I show the table of contents for the current edition next:

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive on EJB3, it should become the classic text on O/R Mapping.
This is a surprisingly comprehensive and useful book. It looks at all the key issues that stem from the problem of making objects persistent in an enterprise application, provides thoughtful analysis, and supplies proven solutions. Along the way, the book addresses seemingly diverse topics such as transactions, unit testing, and deployment with candor and authority, while providing expert coverage of core persistence topics like object-relational mapping and querying.
5-0 out of 5 stars EJB 3 Thoroughly Explained
This book provides a very thorough coverage of EJB 3.The authors clearly explain each element of EJB 3 and then provide an example in code showing how to actually use each element.Often, the authors show multiple ways to accomplish a task and follow up with the advantages and disadvantages of, or why you would use each approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
I found this book to be an excellent reference for the Java Persistence API.Very easy to read as well, with very good examples of usage. It was very interesting to read about the "behind the scenes" expectations of the JPA specification.I have recommended this book to several colleagues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars another cracker from Josh ...
Disclaimer: the fact that I have known and worked with Josh on and off for around 10 years now has little bearing on my review of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is really another excellent book I've seen on Java. Authors try to model/abstract real-world senarios into some "silly trivia" puzzles. You may say they are "Not puzzles, just silly trivia", but if you are experienced Java developer, you will figure out what they really mean and then smile on them. I have to say I was lost in some of those puzzles before in my real-world programming history...
5-0 out of 5 stars Unique book finds pitfalls in both programs and the language itself
This book is filled with brainteasers about the Java programming language and its core libraries. Anyone with a working knowledge of Java can understand these puzzles, but many of them are tough enough to challenge even the most experienced programmer. Puzzlers are groupedaccording to the features they use, but you cannot assume that the trick to a puzzle is related to its chapter heading.

3-0 out of 5 stars How quickly things become obsolete
I bought this book almost the first day it became available, I think in November of last year, and loved it, despite numerous minor errata which I submitted but have not been published. It explains the structure of the RCP very well, as well as I have seen anywhere.Parts I, III, IV and V are excellent.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Web Developers
The book look like it has some promise. Unfortunately, it does not even touch those things that are important to web developers. There is no mention of setting up servers in eclipse, publishing, remote debugging, etc....
5-0 out of 5 stars Grateful
By way of background, I am an old VC++/MFC developer with a smattering of the .NET fiasco. I loved VC++ 6.0 but balk at Uncle Billie's ponderous extravaganza. I had also done some Java a while ago and wanted to get back into it. I found Eclipse to be a marvel of robustness and complexity. Despite my experience, after a couple of weeks diddling around with this attempting to make sense of my own Java "hello worlds", I figured I'd tumble for a couple of books. I purchased this book and Eclipse: Building Commercial Quality Plug-ins (Clayberg, Rubel) and (almost) all was revealed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad book to setup DBCP
This book gives a speedstart in getting high level architecture of Tomcat 5. Its discussion, even though not comprehensive, can make you can tell the difference between a valve, a service, an instance, and a server.
3-0 out of 5 stars A collection of articles
This book contains some good information. However, it's clear that the publisher merely solicited a bunch of articles and sort of threw them together without much in the way of an overarching design. The result is that you can find answers to many common Tomcat questions in this book, but others will go unanswered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply the best JavaScript book outthere ...
... how do i know this?
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview but lacking in only a few areas
After plowing through the initial stage of immense frustration that most people trying to learn JavaScript do (and finding that there are very few good books on it), I stumbled across this. I was initially surprised by it's length - but don't be intimidated, it's chock full of good, useful content. If you have a little experience with JavaScript, this will take you to the next level and also serve as a very useful reference. I might not have grasped all the techniques at first but I generally had an idea of how to do something or where to look in the book when I sat down to put my thoughts to work. The only qualms I have are with the later chapters on things like client-server communication, JavaScript and XML, and Web Services. They seemed to lack a bit in the example and explanation section. Sure, I learned how to set up a cross-browser method of creating HTTP requests - but the process seemed lacking in the same care and devotion in explaining why I was or providing me with a solid example of how to use it. However, these chapters were still very useful and someone interested in these topics should use them as a springboard (just not the definitive guide). Overall, a solid book on a topic that has few. Kudos to Nicholas C. Zakas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation
I think you can find several other JavaScript books that contain the same technical material as this book but this book's strength, in my opinion, is the author's delivery. The author does a very, very good job at explaining and this is what makes this book great. His explanations were very thorough and he seemed to anticipate my questions. I don't usually like the Wrox books but this one is a winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars there are good examples !
this book is not suit for j2ee beginners, no detail explanation to build basic j2ee idea; but if you have some concepts about web components and ejbs but no sense in real world projects and how to deploy projects into a server, there are a lot of examples in this book, it is a good practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased!

4-0 out of 5 stars Abstraction, Specification & OOD explained well @ this book!
Percect book for a computer science student who must learn the fundemantal concepts of Object Oriented Design (OOD) in order to success and able to design and develop production quality software that are reliable, easy to mantain and modifiable.. It outlines the important steps for each chapter but the order of the chapters should be rearranged.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book more students should use
Barbara Liskov brings name recogntion the text. Respect comes for reasons, though, and this book shows many good reasons for respecting this educator and her co-author.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of the best Computer Science books I have read. It is one of those books where every word is worth reading. And it is so concise. After reading this book, I understood clearly what exceptions were, how good design is done, etc. Also, the fundamental concepts like abstraction, decomposition, etc are so brilliantly described that you will never be hazy about them again. The most favourite topic of mine is the procedural SPECIFICATION part using the REQUIRES, MODIFIES, EFFECTS clauses. It really helped me see how procedures are specified.Read more
