Editorial Review

If you've adopted Java as your organizational language, you're probably using, or planning to use, some sort of multitier design to maximize maintainability while making your data store accessible to as many applications as possible. The Jakarta engine ranks as the interface server of choice in that environment, and the Jakarta Struts Framework 1.1 makes it far easier to implement multitier information systems. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a tutorial - Don't buy if you want to learn struts
This book should not be viewed as a tutorial. If you know nothing about struts and you want to learn, do not buy this book. You will only confuse yourself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Review
The previous book I had on Struts did a poor job of... well, everything. It is called "The Struts Framework" and the main reason I bought it was because it was a manageable 150 pages long. (Am I the only one tired of several hundred page tech books?)
2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted and difficult to understand
Usually I consult Amazon for a book reference. This time I decided to buy this book simply because it's O'REILLY.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for OOP, but not for real JAVA
I am using this book for JAVA class at my University. It really sucks, because my teacher teaches like most other books teach, and this book has some weird pedagogical method of teaching objects rather than syntax.Terrible when your teacher wants to teach his way and it conflicts with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am not an idiot
I am a beginner at JAVA and I have tried other books and spent a lot of time making poor progress as they try to talk down to you. I am not an idiot and appreciate the fact that this book is by a real life teacher who is aware of the failings of beginners and helps to put these right. Combine this with an online discussion group for problems and you have an excellent learning environment

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Beginners learning Java 5++
Had my first taste of BlueJ as a college student at Bell College Hamilton, my Java skills have increased tremendously mainly due to the principles and concepts learned from BlueJ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
The book is very indepth and the author really knows what he is talking about.I would not say it is a beginner's book by any stretch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for an experience Java Programmer
I am an experienced Java programmer. This book together with the NetBeans IDE allowed me to come up with a J2ME application in less than a week. The examples in the book is a great resource for learning to write J2ME applications. I learn best when I'm coding. In my case, I used the source from the PeekAndPick RSS Reader to come up with my J2ME text reader. The program has been heavily modified since, but the book provided sample code that was a great starting point for my learning.
4-0 out of 5 stars Non-Beginner Advanced Reference
This title is for the schooled j2me coder. The material is rather advanced, and the topics covered involve programming you will only really see on the corporate level. If you have just got that phone from xxxxx- service provider, don't start here if you want to write a quick app or game. Instead, go to J2ME The Complete Reference from Osborne/McGraw Hill- this will prove more beneficial. I was able to gain knowledge of what my future held with Java Micro if I chose the path, and this book put everything into perspective. Thanks IBM ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual Java Teaching Book
A good visual book, teaching by the UML diagrams. Suitable for beginners to intermediate level and a bit more. Nice colorful book. With the help of "Sample Developments" this book will give you some real practical experiments throughout each chapter. My suggestion for those who want to begin Java with no prior programming experience is "Java 60 Minutes a Day" which you can find it in my review list. In my view, as an intermediat programmer, is a bit difficult to understand core java with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
This book is good for java beginner and it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn java in a fun and with more graphic. However, there is less topic covered. It is highly expect that more area coverage in later edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the best cup of Java
Note: OOP = object oriented princibles OOT = object oriented technology

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book (from review on TheServerSide.com)
JavaServer Faces: The Complete Reference, by Chris Schalk and Ed Burns, is a once-and-for-all reference to JSF 1.1 and 1.2, covering almost anything and everything JSF-related.
3-0 out of 5 stars No Code to download
I couldnt find any code examples of this book.Going through a 800 + page book without code examples is very tedious..Hope authors will get the code examples available at the earliest..

3-0 out of 5 stars one more okay book
This is like a cross refrence book where on each page itrefers to other chapters or pages atleast three times. And i would just say it's okay. It doesnt even teach how to crawl web in a good automatic way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital reference
Lucene is truly an amazing piece of work.A knowledgeable Java programmer can pick up the API and integrate lucene into their applications very quickly and effectively. There are some excellent examples that come with system, and getting an index built and a search system working is a fun task you can complete in a short afternoon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't miss book for lucene..
I love the Deitel & Deitel series programming books because of their deliberate intend to teach by real-world examples. It doesn't matter if an author gives you all the techno mombo-jombo behind the software/language if they can't show you how it works in the real-world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious Javascript programmer.
James Edwards & Cameron Adams' THE JAVASCRIPT ANTHOLOGY: 101 ESSENTIAL TIPS, TRICKS & HACKS compiles a range of solutions to the most common JavaScript questions and problems, offering up tested solutions, standards-compliant tips, and keys to ensuring JavaScript code is clean, accessible and logical. 5-0 out of 5 stars I like it, I like it, I like it....
OK...this book is going under lock and key at my work desk...The JavaScript Anthology : 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & Hacks by James Edwards and Cameron Adams.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you involved or interested in building web sites or web applications? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Cameron Adams and James Edwards, have done an outstanding job of writing a practical book for webmasters who are looking for a copy-and-paste solutions to everyday needs. Adams and James Edwards, begin by providing an overview of JavaScript's capabilities and limitations, and introduce some core best practices that they'll be using through the rest of the book. Then, the authors look at techniques for using and processing numbers in JavaScript. They continue by looking at ways of manipulating strings to find information, storing data, and preparing test for output; as well as, including a thorough introduction to regular expressions in JavaScript. Next, the authors introduce you to one of the most powerful data-storage structures in JavaScript: the array. Then, the authors introduce and explore DOM, and look at how to create and read the data from elements, attributes, and text. Then, they look at reading and writing data from different kinds of form widget, address the tasks of validating and processing form data, and discuss techniques for improving the usability of form-based interfaces. They also take a cautious look at manipulating windows and scripting across frames. Next, the authors introduce cookies and show you how to use them effectively. Then, they show you how to get the date and time in JavaScript, how to compare and process dates and times, and how to output the final data in different formats and conventions. They continue by exploring the basic techniques involved in scripting for images. Next, the authors outline techniques for dealing with different browsers and rendering modes. Then, they look at how to read and write the styles from a single element or group of elements, how to read and write CSS rules to an existing or created style sheet, and how to build a style sheet switcher. The authors also cover event-handling in all its flavors, detecting the position and size of an object, tracking the mouse, and making elements appear and disappear. Next, they look at more complex forms of scripting that use motion and animation. Then, the authors include solutions for the problem of menus overlapping select elements in Windows IE 5 and IE 6. They also provide an overview of the current state of play regarding JavaScript and accessibility. The authors continue by showing you how to detect whether a user has the Flash plugin, and mastering communications between JavaScript and Flash. Next, they delve into the exciting area of online application design, including data retrieved using XMLHttpRequest, as well as the older technique of using iframes. Then, the authors introduce OOP, exploring its core concepts and benefits. Finally, the authors look at everyday techniques for writing faster, more efficient code that's shorter and uses less memory. In this most excellent book, you'll find scripts and discussions that sit on the bleeding edge of current practice. More importantly, you'll find this book a useful and inspirational resource for modern, best practice scripting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to become a good architect
The main intention of the book is to prepare a reader for SCEA exam. It covers all exam objectives except Legacy systems and Messaging. There is also very useful use case study for second part of the exam. The book underlines the most important behaviour of Java components. It is almost unbelievable how authors succeded to get all important information in just 180 pages. The book is very usefull for all people who want to design projects with qualities of experienced J2EE architect. Major part of the book is about EJB, UML and design patterns. Especially if you come from a development area you get a new view how to build overall architecture of J2EE projects and how to connect them with existing legacy systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Brief Review
The book gives a good brief review on SECA objectives and iterates through each topic in the exam. At the end, there is a sample project for the preparation of part II of the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Aid for the Enterprise Architect Exam
I recently passed the CX-310-051 exam and relied heavily on this book as a study guide. In my opinion, purchasing this book is a virtual necessity and I highly recommend it.It is well written, succinct and packed with useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation
Excellent book to start from the ground-up with AJAX (please note: not from the ground-up with Web dev!!).The title is truely relevant to the content.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear explanations
This book describes clearly all the concepts you need to start rolling your AJAX applications. Nice explanations through all the book and examples that will help you to grab this new way of developing the Web 2.0.
5-0 out of 5 stars AJAX to the rescue...
We really liked the book as it's real easy to read. We appreciated the overview of JavaScript patterns and very much liked the overview of getting your JavaScript development environment in order with tools like: JSDoc, JSLint, JsUnit and GreaseMonkey.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP.However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion.I'm searching for an errata for the book now.(There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)
