3-0 out of 5 stars The Next Big Thing...
What held me back from 4 stars was the repetition. This is a small book -- easy to read in one sitting -- and I felt that there was some repetition in a few places that would have made the book tighter, smaller, and a better read.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but narrowly-focussed, error-ridden and frequently annoying
There is a lot to like in this book, and a lot not to like.I'll talk about the negatives first and then discuss the positives.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's not about Ruby Replacing Java: Read it before any conclusion
This books doesn't say Java is dead. It points the problem that the platform and (mostly) tha language has and try to show alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars You want to write Servlets & JSP's - Buy This!
I'm not a big reviewer. I find writing a challenge, even if it's a positive experience, as it is now. I started learning Java a few months ago and bought a number of books on the topics I needed to really create a java website.
5-0 out of 5 stars Precisely the book I've been dreaming of...
This book is exactly what it claims to be: a general reference to hundreds of "everyday" situations Java Web developers face. Just as any cookbook, it doesn't go into the "deepest" details about every little thing, and it does give examples of ways to not reinvent the wheel. Some reviewers see this as worthy of only 1 star... This is only a 1 star book for readers who like to reinvent the wheel and waste time on unnecessary details... if you're like me and have deadlines to meet, you'll find what you need here quickly and efficiently.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hampered by use of custom libraries
Being an O'Reilly fan it is hard for me to find fault with their no-nonsense approach to technical books, but there is one MAJOR issue I have with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and easy to follow
My company had bought one copy of several books on JavaScript and everyone started borrowing Beginning JavaScript. So we bought several more!It is complete, easy to follow - for both beginning programmers and experienced programmers new to JavaScript. We were particularly interested in generating XML files. The 'advanced' book we bought didn't cover it, but Beginning JavaScript did.We couldn't be happier with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
JavaScript is the first programming language that I have ever attempted to learn. This book is making it so easy for me.Paul Wilton lays it out for you, step by step, explaining in layman's terms what each line means and any rules of thumb that are relevant to that line.He doesn't bog you down with detail or obscure exceptions either.I love this book, and I am so lucky to have found it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full client side javascript tutorial
This is a perfect book for those who is looking for skills of creating dynamic web pages, though it is a bit outdated now in part of intensive discussion on how to create cross-platform pages for older versions of IE and Netscape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for how to code specific situations
Anyone who has been involved in programming very long soon comes to realize the value of the various programming cookbooks. The cookbooks are not for the person who wants to learn how to program in a particular language, but are very useful for programmers with a basic knowledge of the language. The idea is simple, take the most common problems people deal with and put the solutions into a book.Simply state the problem and then show the code to resolve it.So, if you need to know how to do something you can look it up, enter the code, and test it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This is an excellent book-it manages to make itself appropriate for both introductory and experienced Java developers. If you've ever looked at any of the books in O'Reilly's "Cookbook" series, you'll know that the book is organized into "recipes", which illustrate how to accomplish various development tasks in Java.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite type of supplemental reference manual...
I make no apologies about being an "R&D" developer... "Rob & Duplicate". I learn best by seeing something that works, and then adapting it to my own needs. Therefore, a book like Java Cookbook by Ian Darwin (O'Reilly) is the exact type of book I look for and use on a regular basis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flex
I really enjoy reading this book, in particular the chapters about J2EE and Flex.Help me understand the design patterns and motivations behind the cairngorm framework too and more importantly how to architect Flex applications.Looking forward to reading the updated version, following the new Flex 2.0.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Book with examples step-by-step of applications created in FLEX 1.0. It for installation configurations and other Flex's basic subjects. It is a book for intermediary and advanced users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Separating concerns
Flex 2.0 has been released, but I still find this book (Flex 1.0) an invaluable resource in developing rich client applications. There's a quick 30 page intro to Flex, and then the fun starts. You start at the Presentation tier, working your way through to the Business tier and then finally to the Integration tier of rich internet applications. This is best practice in motion. To find the latest news and releases on Adobe Flex, go [...] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Java
It helps to have a little programming experience under your belt. That having been said, this book provides a comprehensive, and readable introduction to Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I just wanted to increase the rating of the book from the 3.5 stars it has.I disagree with the majority of complaints people had earlier on.This book is very good, and very friendly. It is broken into days, and each new day is a new section which builds upon previous days while improving upon the information you need to know.It repeats some information as you progress thru the 21 sections, but in a clever way.It may be a bit hard for a novice programmer, but programming is not an easy task to begin with. For someone coming from a background in C/C++ or .NET, you can probably get thru half of the book in a week.Overall, this book is very well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start
This is a great book for anyone looking to start Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic tome on Swing is a greatreference
This extremely hefty book on Swing has just about everything in it. However, it is intended to be a reference on Swing, not a tutorial. The problem with the Java Swing API is that it is so large and unwieldy itself that it is difficult to write a complete and useful reference that does not reflect that fact. If you need a good tutorial on Java Swing, you might want to look at the Core Java books by Cornell and read the chapters that apply to Swing. Cornell manages to carve out the basics of writing a Swing application very clearly without getting wrapped around the axle in details you do not need if you are a beginner. Then, come back to this book when you need to write an application to get the details you need. Since everything in Swing is a JavaBean, much of each component's behavior is controlled by a set of properties that are manipulated by accessor methods. Thus, this book has a table for each class that presents the class properties, the data type for each property, the accessor methods, and the default values. In addition, the book has plenty of demonstration code that shows how to use just about all of the various Swing components. The book even has chapters dedicated to changing the look and feel of components and also repainting issues, which loom large in Swing. You can download all of the book's code from the book's website at O'Reilly and Associates. I highly recommend this book to anyone who already knows the bare basics of writing applications with Swing and needs a useful reference. There is no better one out there in publication of which I am aware.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book With a Bad Title
This is for people who have a working knowledge of Swingand who want a comprehensive reference on their desks. I ampreparing for the java Developer exam and thought this would help me get up to speed with Swing. But this is an over kill. Trying to learn Swing with this book is like trying to open a can of Coke with a bulldozer. It would have been more helpful if the Title was something like 'Swing Reference'. If you want to learn some Swing to get some work done very quickly stay away. If you are in the Guru class then go for it. 4 stars because it is indeed a well written reference (Juding from Chapter 1 and 3 and some skimming) But not 5 stars because the Title is misleading

1-0 out of 5 stars yikes!!
I can't recall a tech book so thoroughly unreadable! Maybe if I was more well versed in Swing this might make a little more sense, but seriously....it's great that these folks know all the inheritance lines and can spit them out in eight words or less, but seriously...imagine this as a classroom lecture..anybody awake? anybody still here? well, this class inherits from that or this implemements that interface, and if you look closely, you'll see how this references what we said 47 pages ago (or better yet, what we're gonna say 36 pages down the road!)...all well and good...but we're trying to write real programs and solve real problems....c'mon guys, we're not experts here, else we wouldn't be buying the book!! how about a litle real world usage...I don't have to time to check out the API docs to try and figure out what these guys are yakking about...a major disappointment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Servlets and Java
If you do not understand servlets and program in Java this book is for you.I found it very easy to read and comprehend right off the bat.The examples are excellent and you will get off writing servlets very quickly. It is somewhat shallow in complex examples but then again how complex are servlets. Some best practices and commercial examples could have helped a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth book
I completely agree with the 5-star positive reviews listed here. I saw a couple of new ones that were not so positive, so I wanted to voice my opinion.

2-0 out of 5 stars 5 for knowledge; 0 for the writing -> 2.5-> 2
Sure he knows his stuff but doesn't have a clue on how to write. This is appallingly poorly written. It is one of the most ridiculously disorganized collections of academic 'verbage' (verbiage subsumes garbage) I have ever read. It's almost useless as a reference: its very non-linear (say non-deterministic almost) in concept elucidation (perhaps he's taken the notion of multithreading too much to heart and tried multi-threaded writing???). It's useless as a book to learn from- since learning by example is not just a way to learn, but the only way to learn (Einstein) and this book largely disavows examples.
3-0 out of 5 stars If you want to program concurency in Java you need this book
This is a kind of book you'll need to start developing concurrent systems in Java. It shows details of what should be done to safely handle patterns for concurrent programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Threaded Programming Information for More than Java
This is the best book I have ever read on threading, and certainly applies well to other languages naturally (especially languages with a modern and mature thread library like Mono/.NET). Unlike other reviewers here, I encourage so-called "beginners" to read this book. He has plenty of examples so you will not get lost, and this *is* the right way to do things, so start with this one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Organization
This book has very poor organization. I would not recommend this book to a beginner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to VHDL, but light on the details
This book is a fine introduction to VHDL, well written in the early chapters. Unlike most VHDL books it covers the language from a higher level, including fundamental concepts like test benches that seem to be buried or lost in other books on the subject. It could use a lot more detail, though, and the later chapters seem rushed, and also dated in some areas (VHDL 87 vs. 93 in particular). And as others have mentioned the examples seem inadequate. If you buy this book, you might also want to get something with more detailed examples to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction
This book provides a perfect introduction to the field of vhdl for synthesis. Very simple and it almost cover the main topics of the language in an efficient way. The book does not provide a detailed description of the language but the level of introduction is sufficient for anyone with little or no background in VHDL. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Your Bookshelf!
What can I say... if you do JDBC programming, you must have this book in your bookshelf. Great examples and super coverage of a very wide topic. You'll read it and continue to look back at it. Well worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars an exceptionally comprehensive volume
JDBC is one of the most mature and widely used Java APIs. Even after the arrival of more recent tools and technologies like EJB's CMP and JDO, JDBC still remains a simple, fast, and reliable way of storing objects' state in an RDBMS. While conceptually this technology is quite straightforward, its evolution has made it more complex and voluminous. Many books have been trying to explain the main aspects of it over and over again, but the 3rd edition of "JDBC API Tutorial and Reference" goes far beyond that.4-0 out of 5 stars Mature and stable
Almost all practical commercial deployments of Java involve hooking to a back end database. Of the latter, relational databases are the dominant form. The first version of JDBC arose soon after Java was released, because of this compelling need. Since then, Sun has extended the functionality while still striving to keep its learning curve shallow, as compared to Microsoft's ODBC. Indeed, the latest Java 1.4 Standard Edition includes JDBC 3.0 in its entirety.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far better than any other book on this topic
This book is miles ahead of other Java gaming books...For one thing, this is an excellent book in its own right. For another, the other existing books on the topic suck.
