Editorial Review

Does this sound familiar? You know Java well enough to write standalone applets and applications, even multithreaded ones, but you know next to nothing about the language's networking capabilities. And guess what--your next job is to write a network-centric Java program. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
I bought it to prepare my class
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is certainly a good reference book for me when I need to know about network programming using Java.As you all know, Java Network Programming is a vast subject, on which a single book can make no justice of.But Elliotte has tried and he is successful with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive reference (3rd Edition)
If you're doing anything with Java and Network I/O programming, the topic will most likely be covered in this book. The author does a great job describing not only how Java handles network programming, but the concepts and details of network programming in general. The book takes the core java.net classes and describes each method, what it does, how to use it, what to watch for, code examples, etc - it takes the API Javadoc and expands upon it.

2-0 out of 5 stars room for improvement
Chap 3: Deploying servlet and JSP Web Applications in Tomcat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for advanced users
This book is for beginners who are not familiar with Tomcat. Or, for users who are just learning how to use it. But not for advanced users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to understand and tells you stuff you need to know
I'm just getting into JSP/Servlet via Tomcat 4.I found this book very easy to read and understand. I was actually reading through the book at the bookstore. It was exactly what I was looking for as a person with limited UNIX and J2EE experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOA made plain
This book examines SOA from all perspectives, technical and business. It mentions both pros and cons summing up why it's one of the greatest moves forward in IT industry. IT people can easily relate to situations covered in this title.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you having a problem making sense of the new emerging standards for virtually all of the major information technology decisions? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Eric Pulier and Hugh Taylor, have done an outstanding job of writing a book for business professionals that explains and clarifies the way web services work in a business setting.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have read 4 books on this subject and this is by far the best
This is the first time I have created a review but I felt compelled to offset the 1 person out of 12 who gave this book a bad rating. I can't imagine a better more concise inrtroduction to this subject. I can't understand what would motivate somone to give this book a bad review. The title of the book is UNDERSTANDING Enterprise SOA not EXPERT'S guide to Enterprise SOA and it is so well written with such great diagrams that even a non-IT person could understand the material. The examples ARE real and in fact almost EXACTLY mirror the environment of my current company - in fact it will serve as a valuable road map going forward.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Java 2 4 Dummies first, AND this one
This is sorta sequel to first Burd's book and it goes little deeper, so I'd say it is a bit advanced for first Java Book. You need both Burd books on Java for a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars My wife can read onechapter in half day

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Beginner Programmer Book
A few years back I tried to learn Programming by reading several books like the Perl book with a Camel on it's cover. I couldn't get past page 2 and gave up. A similiar thing happenned with C for Dummies, I couldn't get past a particular chapter on loops and gave up. Now, I think my logical aptitude is quite OK, since I have a Master's Degree in Finance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but obselete
The concepts in the book are well explained and i think its a good book for abeginner programmer butobsolete for sun java certification 1.5.

5-0 out of 5 stars very deep... great for hardcore java programmer
i buy this book together with kathy's book and have passed the exam with 95% score. i found the exam very easy (although i still missed 3 of the 61 questions), i guess it's because i have read this whole book thoroughly. kathy's book is very good too but just covers what you really need to pass the exam. this book goes a step further by explaining each concept thoroughly, more than you need to pass the exam. if you want to have deep knowledge of how java works, and not just merely to pass the exam, then this is the best book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book for the SCJP eggjam!
I find this fascinating experience learning newer features in java with this book. I thought I knew most of it, but NOPE, I had missed here and there. There are so many little things which we think we know but we might not actually know how to apply that in practical. I would surely reccomend this to anyone taking the eggjam (exam :-) ) It covers all the beginner level java programming concept in detail. U will be gaining a lot by practicing the end of chapter excercise. Go for it and buy this book without blinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for Java developers looking to improve their design skills
I've heard a lot about the classic "Gang of Four" Design Patterns book. However, while I've read many papers based on it, I've never actually read The Book. So, when I had a chance to read the new Design Patterns in Java(TM) (2nd Edition) it seemed like a perfect chance to load up on some must-know information as it is applied to my programming language of choice. Excellent!
5-0 out of 5 stars Bridging pattern theory to coding reality...
If you're a Java programmer and want to approach the subject of design patterns from that perspective, this book is very well done...Design Patterns In Java by Steven John Metsker and William C. Wake.
5-0 out of 5 stars for new and intermediate Java programmers
Metsker, in collaboration with Wake, has released a counterpart to his earlier book, "Design Patterns in C#". Essentially, it covers the same design patterns, but now implemented in Java code. The authors readily point out that the book is directed at a new or intermediate Java programmer. Experienced Java coders probably [or should] already have written such patterns, based on their prior knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook for undergraduate SE course
This is an excellent introductory textbook for CS courses on software engineering. It features OO, UML, iterative processes, a good treatment of software frameworks and design patterns, constructive sample projects, and complete set of slides and full-length lecture RealOne video for free downloading. It is a thin book, but it contains more updated information than many classical ones. Most importantly, the authors have the confidence to air their opinions with justification, instead of compiling and citing a lot of inconsistent historical definitions or events.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for Software Engineering

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bang for your buck with useful, very well explained examples.
This book rocks.I started learning Java about 2 months ago with the Head First Java book, which is AMAZINGLY helpful (even if you know absolutely nothing beforehand).Once I got through that all that I began writing small apps on my own, but found in many cases that the API (Javadoc) was hard to understand because my limited Java knowledge leaves me with no context in many cases.I would think, "ok, it says this class can do this using these methods, and that's what I want, but how exactly do I put this into practice."Java Examples in a Nutshell fills this need perfectly with excellent examples(!), explanations, and clarifications. There's only so much that it can cover, but what it does cover, it covers really well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Summary of Java
Great overall summary of Java with examples.Replaces short surveys, tutorials and cookbooks of Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book of examples of specific Java concepts
This book should not be expected to substitute as a tutorial for people looking to learn the Java language. Instead, it is a book full of short programs that each illustrate specific concepts in the Java language. If you are needing a tutorial on the Java language in general, I suggest "Head First Java", which is also published by O'Reilly and Associates. You can either read the appropriate chapters of this book in parallel with that one, or look through this book after you finish the Head First Java book. If you already know Java, keeping an updated edition of this book around as a reference is a great idea.

I wanted to learn more about SQLJ, specifically Oracle SQLJ. I bought this book and I must say, it's worth every penny. I specifically enjoyed the chapters on SQLJ Update Batching and how to handle BLOB and CLOB.1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized, poor programs

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best WebLogic book ever
Don't be fooled by the bad reviews here...if you need to learn WebLogic in "21 days" or want a "kick start", then perhaps this book is not for you. But if you are an experienced developer that needs information one notch better than the BEA docs, then this book should be on your bookshelf. Mine stays at work, dog-eared and always ready to explain some detail to help solve a problem. Node Manager? Clustering? Domains configuration? SSL? It's all covered, in depth. Note that this book covers BEA WebLogic Server 8.1, not Portal, Integration, or WorkShop.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed because I expected more from this book.
I have been reading through the book. Actually it provides very clear explanations, but I had the impression the author talks too much and keep saying the same things over and over again. The book could be half its volume with the same content of knowledge. Besides the provided examples are a bit too simple and obvious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book on neural networks using Java
Programming Neural Networks in Java will show the intermediate to advanced Java programmer how to create neural networks. This book attempts to teach neural network programming through two mechanisms. First the reader is shown how to create a reusable neural network package that could be used in any Java program. Second, this reusable neural network package is applied to several real world problems that are commonly faced by programmers. This book covers such topics as Kohonen neural networks, multi layer neural networks, training, back propagation, and many other topics. The content of the book is as follows: 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique book
I have received my copy of the book and I can't put it down. It has been great help with my AI research at the University. I have the other book from the same author "Programming Spiders, Bots and Aggregators in Java" and I have the same comments for both. Both are easy to read, have precise information and great code. Chapter 7 of this book "OCR with Kohonen Neural Network" makes the book more than worth it. Great stuff. I hope the author does not stop and keep writting books like these. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning AI and also experienced programmers alike. The author makes though topics seem easy. Highly recommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars first edition was much better (at least w.r.t. text editors)
The first edition was simply great. Not only that it was the first book to describe how to write an Eclipse plugin, it still would be the best -- if Eclipse had stand still. The second edition is not too bad. But the chapter on writing a text editor plugin is so superficial that it could have been left out. Where the first edition described in (necessary detail) how to write a text editor plugin, the second edition just roughly describes the concepts, but no API usage, no example in the book's text. The code on the accompanying CD is somewhat better, but now (2006) partially out of date as well. So if you want to write a text editor, there currently is no book or article I am aware of, that really helps you. You have to dig through existing code and try to find out for youself, why things are as they are.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
Like many others I wanted to extend Eclipse so I can be more productive. Unfortunately I found this book to be poorly written and the technical details vague. I know what I want to do, but the book (over 1000 pages) does not show me how?!
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized book
The book composes of 6 parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a developer or architect who has mastered the basics of enterprise Java development and you want to learn how to use POJOs and lightweight frameworks effectively? If you are, you're in luck! Author Chris Richardson, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is a practical guide to using POJOs and lightweight frameworks to develop the back-end logic of enterprise Java applications.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read
First, this book provides an excellent comparison of several popular "lightweight" java enterprise frameworks. These include Hibernate, JDO, and Spring. There is a wealth of information in here for anyone who is either 1) moving away from "classic" EJB2.* designs or 2) interested in choosing which frameworks are the most appropriate to solve a particular problem.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good overview and a lot of useful detail
It's rare to find a book that does an equally good job with the overview as with the details. Chris Richardson has done that with _POJOs in Action_. It provides a useful roadmap for understanding the concepts underlying lightweight J2EE design principles, while also helping the programmer realize those concepts as working software. Most of the examples include tests, and not just the useless end-to-end kinds of tests, but well-thought-out Object Tests that focus in on one object at a time. Brilliant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice
As a Java instructor, I respect the author's attempt to create a Java Textbook; this is not a simple task. However, I must say that this particular text is NOT a good choice for use in an Introductory Java course.I found this book a very difficult read, as some other reviewers have also commented - statements are tedious and at times you get the impression that the authors real intent is to convey how eloquent he can formulate his statements rather than convey a clear understanding of the technical principles being described.I find myself constantly wishing he'd "get to the point".1-0 out of 5 stars A bad book for any novice!
From my own experience I found trying to learn from this book an extremely difficult task especially being new to programming in general. I have spent more time flipping through other books trying to make sense of what these authors have written. If you are a novice to programming I suggest something with easier reading and better explanation of the topics such as Sams, Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days as suggested by the last review.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
If I didn't have a professor that was so detailed this book would have me totally lost.Their explanations seem to fall short half the time.Becuase this book is so poor I'm in the process of finding another Beginning Java book to fill in the details.Don't waste your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent book for advanced users
I really like this book.It is not for beginners, and is not an "Intro to J2EE".However, for advanced developers, and especially those leaning towards the administation aspects of WebLogic Server, this book is an excellent resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars Followup.
I've already reviewed this book previously but had to comment on the reviews by the "reader from Danbury, CT".1-0 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough
The book does not have detailed explanations - it just brushes the surface of a few topics. It does not really talk about the internals of WebLogic.Read more

Editorial Review

The Java Message Service (JMS) provides a way for the components of adistributed application to talk asynchronously, or for welding together legacyenterprise systems. Think of it as application-to-application e-mail. UnlikeCOM, JMS uses one or more JMS servers to handle the messages on astore-and-forward basis, so that the loss of one or more components doesn'tbring the whole distributed application to a halt.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction but need some updating to JMS 1.1
This is a reasonable good book, as you can expect from O'Reilly. There is a good introduction in the topic (e.g. where is Messaging used for, what kind of messaging does exist, what is JMS), and it offers chapters with some practical code how you send and receive messages, and so on. It contains real Java code with excellent explanation.
