2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, confusing and altogether irritating
I studied this book as an undergraduate in my junior year. I find it important to mention that the CG course was one of the most enjoyable and motivating courses I have taken. Sadly though, this book was one of the worst I studied (or rather, dealt with) for a number of reasons. I found it to be (and my classmates agree!):
2-0 out of 5 stars too much coverage, not even breadth
I must agree with J. Davis. After going through about 3-4 different types of CG courses and experimenting with my own seminars I find that this book is just way too wide of a scope. It seems like it tries to cram general computer graphics, interactive computer graphics, and advanced computer graphics in one... and do a bad job at it.Looking through the book I seriously doubt that some topics can be covered in one chapter, especially some of the viewing chapters. How can you cover all aspect of 2D and 3D viewing, even in breadth only and no depth, in one chapter? That's just ridiculous. It almost feels as if they are saying that you need a separate major for CG completely, one course for overview, one for 2d, one for 3d, one for interactive graphics, and a few for advanced topics in computer graphics... but the problem is that that is too narrow of a scope for any 4 year college degree.Plus you can't even start some of the basic discussions without general education in the fundamental math like linear algebra, calculus, discrete math, and so forth. So this book is sort of making a statement that can't be backed in the real world.Though this does offer a good overview for people who are just curious. It touches on a wide variety of things and has very practical approach to having a workable project using openGL.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very complete
I teach an intro graphics course. I found that this text didn't cover the full set of things that are usually found in such a course (or covered them too superficially.) I do find its OpenGL examples embedded directly into the text to be useful for my students, but for me that doesn't forgive the lack of sufficient explanation of topics I care about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Product Line Engineering Bible
This is the leading authority on Product Line Engineering (PLE).No other book comes close. This book breaks down the three PLE practice areas of Software Engineering, Technical Management, and Organizational Management and describes each in great detail. The book provides guidelines on each area and how to achieve institutionalization of your PLE process.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
simple to understand language. Nice diagrams and the content is really arranged in a nice way

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you already know Software Product Lines, but..
If you have the concept of software product lines down, this is a great book, but if not you can easily get lost or confused, so it becomes difficult reading. If you want to explore software product lines, buy this book, then while you are waiting for the book to arrive read the website http://www.softwareproductlines.com to get up to speed on the concepts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book in a field that has few of them
This is a pretty good book on Java programming in a field that has few alternatives. I first bought the book Java Database Programming Bible, but it was over my head.
1-0 out of 5 stars Someone is kidding someone. Guess who is kidding whom?
Book is not close to anything worthwhile paying for. This title should be changed to 'Some stuff about databases'. Has a M$ bias as shown by using access as database. Using jdbc to odbc as connection type with little to no examples. If the whole book was a here is how to use java to connect to and use data from a database he 'Jim Keogh' might have produced something worth the title and price. Mr. Keogh is Chair E-Commerce Track of Columbia University? That is scary. This book should be a not thanks I will pass.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor dummies book, same thing over and over.
This book has one redeeming fact, it shows you the methods and programming blocks to set up a Java application ready to execute SQL commands, and then it repeats the same thing over and over every chapter for the rest of the book!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas, but not always practical
Like many, we struggle to de-couple logic from data, and we pay the price every time we need to do substantial schema changes. Scott's approach is sound, however, like many who write on these topics, it lacks a certain degree of pragmatism that will let you take a big, complex system from ugly, embedded database queries to one with a clean, extensible persistence layer. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with the approaches outlined, it's just that it starts to feel like a "religion" and that makes any of these ideas hard to retrofit back into a complex system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bridging Agile to Data Base design
This book has several usefull chapters: (a) USE-CASE to Data Base,(b) Class Normalization, (c) Legacy Databases (the headache!), (d) Data Base Encapsulation and more. The book can give you the information you require, to tackle challenges with more confidence. If you know little or nothing about Agile, you should also read: "Agile Modeling", by the same author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the issues and techniques
If you are looking for a broad overview of how to develop applications that use databases (typically relational DBs), then this is a great start. Many different topics are covered, including cultural and personal issues in teams, which are very important. The chapter on mapping objects to relational databases was probably the best, and I also found the database refactoring advice useful.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not introductory as I expected
This book served as my introduction to Eclipse, and I found it not as helpful as just playing with Eclipse itself. After play time was over, I went to the book again, and saw some improvements that I could have used.4-0 out of 5 stars Best and Only Book on EMF
This is the best and only work on the Eclipse Modeling Framework, which is the code generation engine built into the Eclipse IDE. It's a solid work, but it's one flaw is that it is neither a completely how-to book, nor is it completely architectural work, so it will probably frustrate most readers to some degree. This is the only reason I didn't give it a perfect rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Significant Productivity Gains
If you have used Eclipse to program Java, you might have gotten comfortable with its capabilities. Very intuitive and kindly donated by IBM to open source. So when I opened this book, I anticipated oodles of helpful tweaks and shortcuts.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Los objetos al "desnudo"
"Beginning Java Objects" es un excelente libro que muestra las minucias de los objetos, la manera correcta en que deben de implementarse, la importancia de la encapsulaci?n y de los beneficios que nos proporciona la herencia.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book really brings it all together!
I had the first edition of Beginning Java Objects From Concepts to Code sitting on my bookshelf for about 4 years.Meanwhile, I've taken several different Java training courses ranging from beginner to advanced level.I've been part of a development team, and although my role has generally been more of a business subject matter expert, I have also gotten my hands dirty and done some large chunks of coding, debugging, and refactoring other people's code.
5-0 out of 5 stars One program is enough
Regarding Brad's comment, the 'one program' is complex enough to give the reader a lot of practice in understanding the relationships between objects, and that seems to me (an out-of-practice former COBOL programmer) to be the biggest hurdle in understanding object-oriented programming. Barker's book gives more help in this area than the other Java books I've read. I read Eckel's Thinking in Java, and got lost by the middle of the book. Once I've finished Barker, I think I'll get a lot more out of Eckel. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No Java source codes available
One major problem with this book, particularly for beginners like me, is that the Java source codes are UNAVAILABLE.To try the code in the book, you have to type, which obviously is a tremendous wate of time and frustration. There are no alternative. Hope that the author may immediately act to resolve the issue. Considering the amount of frustration that I have gone through, even two stars are a generous rating for this book. Now I am looking for other data structure books which are rated good and provide source codes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to read about data structures and algorithms with little to no knowledge about them
This book for people who do know little to nothing about data structures and algorithms in a programming language. If you do not know much about data structures and algorithms then the mere thought of learning them on your own can make you afraid of them. On top of that there aren't many books written in Java that talk about them. But this book makes learning it as easy as having an ice cream. As the title suggests, all algorithms and code examples have been written in Java. If you laready know Java then it is very easy to understand the chapters and the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginning programmer
This book is the best for a beginning programmer with no experience. It guides you through the basics and does not bore you or assume that you know C or C++ like most other Java books.I have wanted to pick up some programming for a while and John Smiley's book was the only one I have been able to read from cover to cover and get something out of.I got the electronic version at his website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Easy to Understand
I took an intro to programming course with Java at my university a few years ago. The professor was really bad (barely spoke English) and needless to say, I hardly got anything out of the class. I was feeling a little anxious about future programming classes so I picked up this book at the recommendation of a friend. I was truly impressed with it. I really liked the classlike setting in the book which made you feel like you were actually participating in a course, not just reading another programming book. The explanations are worded in everyday terms so you don't have to be a software engineer to figure out what is going on. In fact, Smiley actually goes way more in depth than most first semester Java courses, yet presents the information so well that you don't even notice how much you are learning. This is probably the best book I have seen to teach yourself Java and would recommend it to anyone.
