4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice complimentary resource
I have read some AJAX books and enjoyed them, but they typically concentrate on the client side and coverage of what occurs on the server side, if any, is generally PHP or a smattering of almost anything. But I'm a Java guy. The book I've been looking for would have not only the server side examples in Java, but would also use Java as the basis of discussion on client-server communication and the tools available to ease the whole process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Emile T.
This book a a very good start for Eclipse new users in the way that it presents all basic features of Eclipse 3.0. I recommend it to any one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but getting dated
Online documentation has its place, but I like books better for learning. I found Eclipse's online doc especially lacking when it comes to *learning* about this complex product. Sure there's a ton of stuff, but most of it just seems to describe the ten's of thousands of options that the tool provides. (Personal Rant: Do we really need all of these options? Can't anyone see that just because you can do something doesn't mean you always should? Can't anyone see that a lot of these options just get in the way of using the product?)
4-0 out of 5 stars Eclipse
One of the problems with Open Source software is getting good books describing it.Sure it's possible to get documentation on-line, but sometimes there is no substitute in having all the information in one convenient book.Steve Holzner has done a good job in describing the various aspects of Eclipse.Coverage includes: the Eclipse Java Development Tools and Workbench, Ant, CVS, building Swing apps, SWT, JSP along with a host of other topics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The right book to start with Eclipse
This is an excellent book and I recommend it highly to start with Eclipse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for beginers...No help for experienced users
I read this book end to end but didnt find even a single startling fact about eclipse that i didnt know already. It was more like feature round up ( which you can discover going through the menu items in eclipse IDE)
5-0 out of 5 stars Configuration Salvation
I manage multiple developers spread around the globe building product relying on the Eclipse Web Standard Tools (WST) and other parts of Eclipse. Getting each team member's IDE configured and updated was sucking up time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for begining programmers / new to Java
Most of the Java books on the market don't teach you anything about how to program - they simply contain lists and lists of classes and other complex topics.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to OOP and Java
This is one of the best books there is on object oriented programming and Java. I used this book as reference on a Java training course I recently thaught to Cobol programmers. Although this book is not aimed toprofessional programming, the contents, structure and presentation stylemakes it a good choice as reference book for introductory Java and OOPcourses aimed at professional programmers with no or little experience inobject oriented technology and Java.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
This is an excellent book, and the only book that you can use to learn Java programming basics while preparing for the exam. I have always wondered why such a book did not exist. After all, who can determine better than Sun, a basic course in Java, and Sun does it by determining the SCJP exam objectives. This book is like a course in basic Java programming within the scope of the SCJP exam objectives. The author combines the two tasks (teaching basic Java programming and preparing you for the SCJP exam) very successfully without going beyond the scope of the exam objectives (Chapter 1 is the only extra addition). He does it by shuffling the exam objectives around and by using his classroom kind of presentation style. There is a perfect logical flow throughout the book:I love the way the material is presented and how all the concepts are clearly defined. It has removed many ambiguities, doubts, and confusions that I had about some concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Java 5 Programming Book
I already have the SCJP certification for an older Java version. Now I would like to get certification for J2SE 5. So I bought this book. Like the SCBCD Exam Study Kit by the same author, this book explains all the concepts in a way that is easy to read and understand. I especially like the complete code examples that I'm experimenting with and the Exam's Eye View section that highlights the important concepts. The Exam Quick Prep Appendix is also cool. Will be helpful to skim through important points before the exam. Visuals, tables, notes, cautions are all in right amount and very helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book: He Did It Again
This is a great SCJP certification book which can also be used to learn basic Java programming. Previously, I used Dr. Sanghera's SCBCD Exam Study Kit (from Manning) to pass my SCBCD exam, and liked that book very much. Now, I have read this book from cover to cover to upgrade my SCJP certification, and I would say: He did it again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Still good
Like a fine movie, this book is still very useful even as the language advances. A wonderful reference I still find myself reaching for it several times a week for parts of the GUI that I don't reach into that often. Considering that I use the Eclipse front-end I do all of my GUI coding by hand (that and most GUI builders put out some really terrible code), so maybe I am a bit atypical in this regard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pure java
That is all, pure java. Simple, organized, interfaced, estructured, conceptual and objective point of view of reality. Some examples, lots of them, really, some descriptions of classes, all of swing JFC, really, and that's all folks. No more, no less. But that's the best, it's a reference of swing, "thousand and more" pages reference, but clear reference. A must if you're interested in collecting java muscle books.5-0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive book
This book is very comprehensive and is a must for any serious Swing developer. I have found it as a good reference for all sorts of examples and also in a method lookup like way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SWT Fundamentals
If you want to learn the SWT fundamentals, read this book. Remember that JFace, Eclipse IDE, Eclipse Rich Client Platform applications all use SWT at the bottom. While the book does not cover some advanced topics like custom widgets and layouts, it will build a solid foundation for understanding these advanced topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for the details -- and you'll need them!
First, a caveat -- this book only covers SWT, the Standard Widget Toolkit, and not JFace. Presumably, JFace will be covered in a forthcoming book. That said, using JFace well requires a good knowledge of SWT, so it would be a mistake to avoid this book just because it doesn't include JFace topics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction to SWT
This is a straightforward, well written, book on SWT. It starts with installation and goes through the windowing model, the event model, and the entire toolkit in an introductory manner, covering each topic in depth with example code an illustrations. It's not a reference book, it's a walkthrough the toolkit.

1-0 out of 5 stars a bit informatin here and there
The book has some useful information about J2EE here and there, but since this is a book serves a guidance for the SCEA exam, most of the contents are either too shallow or irrelevant for that purpose. Don't expect that you can rely on this book only and pass the exam.
1-0 out of 5 stars Copied from Sun Documentation
The statements in the book reads as a SUN document. So if you dont want to take the trouble to sit in front of a computer and search through all the links for certification objectives in SUN website, you can purchase this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written book with many redundant and confusing info
I am using this book for J2EE study. After reading chapter 1 and 2, I have to say this is one of the worst tech books I ever read. The materials are harshly composed, often without a consistent and clear framework on various topics (what an irony on a book about a framework). From time to time, I have the impression that the authors just pulled some paragraphs from various articles and piled them together. This gives me the further impression that the authors don't really understand those subjects well enough to distill the essentials out and present them in an organized manner. Unless you are already an expert in those subjects, you will find yourself confused by this book and walk away with more questions than before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter and Concise
After reading Marty Hall's Core Servlets and JSP and O'Reilly's Java Servlet Programming 2ED, I think this book does a better job of teaching and explaining the concepts and examples as they pertain to servlets in a clear and concise manner.Hall's and O'Reilly's books are good after you read this one first since they are more in-depth.I've been looking for a book that clearly explains Applet-to-Servlet communications.I've finally found a book that explains Applet-to-Servlet communications far better than the other 2 books, or any other books for that matter.5-0 out of 5 stars Amen
If only I had this book when I first worked with Java Servlets. The writers must have kept their audience in mind when they wrote it.The detailed explanations and examples, in this book, are extremely helpful.I was completely thrown away by their Shopping Cart examples because till this point I have not found any reference material that could superbly explained it the way they do. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is, or plans on, working with Java Servlets to get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars great examples

5-0 out of 5 stars For a J2EE beginner, a great resource
I've been working on webapps for the past 3 years in PHP, Python, and most recently Ruby. I've been trying to learn J2EE and have found it very difficult to find a foothold, a solid piece of ground to get oriented as to how people write Java webapps. I tend to like tutorial-style books when learning a new subject, ones that pick a project and implement it step by step, explaining the importance and contextual relevance of each hunk of code along the way. Of the four or five J2EE books that I've read on O'Reilly's Safari, this book is by far the best one for my style of learning. Java webapps are unique in that there is such a wide variety of options for each layer of your application. The Model, View, and Controller layers are all completely independent, and the interfaces between them are all configurable. Not only are they configurable, but you can choose to implement the connections between layers in code, or by using xml configuration files. This is *very* different to any other framework that I've used, and the complexity and power it presents is immensely overwhelming.
4-0 out of 5 stars A decent survey of JSF
I have this book and Core Javaserver Faces;this is the book that lies open on the desk, is dog eared, and has coffee spills on it.It's not perfect, but it's the best there is in this space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great one for SCJD
It is one of the best books on latest version of SCJD J2SE5. It gives you insight of project and way to complete your SCJD project with confidence. You should buy if you are preparing for SCJD like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for SCJD and standalone
Most of the time people who are preparing for SCJD will buy this book but it is good beyond that. Second edition give you practical example on actual project. It is kind of parallel to what you are doing in SCJD. Author is active member on javaranch and gives very useful tips to all post in SCJD forum. I think people who want to improve Java skills on application side should look into this book as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars SCJD Exam with J2SE 5
Let's face it.The Sun Certified Java Developers Exam is tough. If you are serious about passing, this is an excellent book for anyone wishing to avoid the common pitfalls associated with many of the projects. The authors reveal various approaches to many of the issues that need to be resolved, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of each.I found the authors' information on Threading, Building the GUI, logging, configuration, RMI vs. Sockets and "putting it all together" all extremely helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the rest?
I realize it's a pocket reference, but this is a brief guide to syntax and then the DOM for the rest of the book. It doesn't cover any of the API stuff like the Date class. It'd be nice to have more information at the price of needing slightly larger pockets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moderately good.
I am not a big fan of these 'Pocket Reference' books by O'Reilly.Although I have 8 of them, I find them too brief to be very helpful as a reference.Usually they come up short on many parts of the language.
2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the Point
If you are new to JavaScript and looking for a helper title, this isn't it.If you're already familiar with JavaScript, and need specific information, you probably need more than an extremely condensed pocket reference is going to provide. There really isn't anything wrong with the pocket reference - it has correct information, formatted pretty well, and contains the most common parts of the core language as well as the common DHTML references one needs for general use. What it doesn't have, and shouldn't for a pocket reference, are complete explanations for the components, or any usage examples - two things needed by people who are turning to a reference book.JavaScript is really too complex to be summarized along with DHTML elements in 127 half-sized pages. If you're looking for a JavaScript reference, purchase the authors full-sized reference guide, "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide" (ISBN: 0596000480) instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best new book for Oracle 10g Application Server
I have a couple other books on Oracle 10g Application Server. This one beats them hands down for comprehensive discussion from install, design to administer the complex product. As an Oracle DBA I need to support this environment and found the book useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oracle Java apps step-by-step
This is a step-by-step walkthrough of Oracle App Server programming. It goes from application architecture basics through twenty-one chapters on using various APIs and services (with one on installation) to end on clustering and failover. Graphics are used quite heavily, often showing page by page use of various Wizards.
4-0 out of 5 stars No Oracle lock in
The 10g is Oracle's answer to IBM's WebSphere and JBoss. Wessler certainly wastes no time in delineating how you can use 10g to develope J2EE applications. There are some mundane chapters on installing and configuring it. Important, granted. But the crux of the book is the chapters on making and deploying web applications, EJBs and Web Services within 10g. If you look here, 10g seems to allow for any standard J2EE application to run within it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent investment
We have been using perl for our server side programming for over 6 years now. During this period, the popularity of our web based applications has grown. To deal with the growth, we have had to optimize the programs, as well as look at alternate server setup strategies. We acquired this book as it covers both the topics of our interest -- mod_perl for efficiency of perl programs and setting up servers that use mod_perl.
5-0 out of 5 stars As the title suggests
This is very practical. It starts with a lot of information on how apache works and how mod_perl and other modules intract. Then, after learning that information, it shows how you can use the knowledge to signficiantly improve the performance of your mod_perl apps.
4-0 out of 5 stars mod_perl from the horse's mouth
This one of the most informative O'Relly books by absolute metrics: almost 1000 pages packed with useful information. It pretty much covers all bases: from porting existing CGI scripts to mod_perl, to architecturing busy websites for optimal performance. One of the authors, Stas Bekman, works on mod_perl full-time, so this is it's basically as authoriative as it gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Java 5
The book is an excellent introduction to Java 5. This book does a very good job at teaching Object-Oriented Programming in an easy to understand progressive manner. All examples in this book are very instructional, and yes, the examples do compile. Kudos to the authors, Herve and Julie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pay attention!
Nearly every book on this CD is one (or two!) versions old.I'm still finding them very useful, but I knew what I was getting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of content, but could be so much better
Initially, I thought getting seven books worth of content for the price of two was too good to pass up. They even throw in one of the books contained on the CD in hardcopy as well, making it more like getting the other six books on CD for the price of one. Why would you want to buy the books instead? Because they're much easier to reference.5-0 out of 5 stars Seven complete "how to" instruction books on CD-ROM
In The Java Enterprise CD Bookshelf, David Flanagan, Jim Farley, William Crawford, and Kris Magnusson collaborate to provide the Java user with seven complete "how to" instruction and reference books on CD-ROM, in addition to a print copy of Java Enterprise In A Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference. The books on CD-ROM include Enterprise JavaBeans: 2nd Edition; Java Servlet Programming; Java Security; Java Distributed Computing; Java Enterprise in a Nutshell: 3rd Edition; Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell; and, of course, Java Enterprise In A Nutshell. This single volume, highly recommended, book/cd-rom combination is ideal for the novice Java user seeking a quick start-up and rapid learning curve as possible, and will prove invaluable refresher and reference for the advanced and experienced Java user as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you have all of the tools you need to build enterprise-class applications? If you don't, then this book is for you! Authors Jim Farley, William Crawford, Prakash Malani, Justin Gehtland and John G Norman, have done an outstanding job of writing the third edition of a book that provides a pragmatic introduction to the latest release of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
5-0 out of 5 stars Java developers will want this as an essential desk reference
Jim Farley and William Crawford's Java Enterprise In A Nutshell: A Practical Guide packs in tutorials on a number of enterprise Java tools, offering new material covering Xdoclet and Java 5.0 Annotations, JavaServer Faces, and the Hibernate API. Also included are open source testing and build tools, tips on writing SOAP-based web services, J2EE security issues and operations, and much more. Serious Java developers will want this as an essential desk reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for an immense topic
Java Enterprise in a Nutshell tries to do the impossible - fit Enterprise Java into a nutshell.I don't think it matters how big of a nutshell you have, it would be a truly impossible task.Farley and Crawford, though, do a nice job shoe-horning as much Enterprise Java as they can into an 800+ page book. They go over many topics including all the J2EE standards like EJBs and JSPs to open source tools like JUnit, Cactus, and Hibernate. The book goes into enough detail to get more than just the gist of the subjects, but not so much detail to overwhelm someone looking for information on a particular topic. The book also has relevant code sections for the various topics outlining how that technology might be used.Overall, a compact, clear, well written reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I would like to see this book updated
Great book but needs to be updated.

3-0 out of 5 stars While it's still a nice introduction, it has become dated
This 2nd edition of Cockroft's classic on Sun Performance Tuning was a step up from the somewhat meager meal served in its 1st edition. 1-0 out of 5 stars only if you're just starting out
After reading the other reviews I had high hopes for this book. The book is not geared to people that already have basic sysadmin skills. And in one case the book makes a rather dubious statement. They list a few ndd parameters and state "The other values should never be changed on a production system."Well, they left out tcp_ip_abort_cinterval. And they don't mention tcp_ip_abort_linterval at all which so far seems to be an undocumented Sun Microsystems parameter.A book about tuning should cover all the tunable parameters and explain cause/effect.Simply stating that you never change the other parameters without explaining why isn't why you buy a book on Performance and Tuning.
