4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
Reading and understanding the content of this book, and the one written by 'Sierra and Bates', are the major contributing factors in getting me a 91% passing grade on the first attempt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed SCJP the first attempt.
This is an excellent study resource and I would recommend it to anyone pursuing their java programmer certification.Be sure to suppliment this book with plenty of practice tests and you should do fine on the exam.Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on non-j2ee java.
I have read over a dozen books on the java and this by far the best one for learning the language in its entirety.Obviously, this book can't cover everything but it gives a very thorough and in-depth introduction. If you can only have one book on java 2, make this the one you pick. Many other books on the subject waste tons of space with simple examples that aren't very informative. This book cuts through the nonsense and gives you all it can in its 700 pages.Great explanations, Great Code Samples, all around top notch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start
The most common comment from the people I showed this book to was "I wish I had it when I started using Eclipse".
2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely shallow coverage
I expected a little more from this book than creating a simple java file and compiling it. This book is for someone who is new to IDEs. This is *NOT* for someone trying for a quick reference to migrate from another IDE to Eclipse - which was my purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump-start your Eclipse IDE experience
I found the book to contain several tips and tricks that were new to me and I have been using Eclipse for over two years now. I would highly recommend this book to new Eclipse IDE users to help you get a leg up on learning the Eclipse IDE. I found this book well worth the price and will be looking for more pocket guide books by O'Reilly to add to my bookshelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Spruce up your Swing!
The Swing library is what makes Java usable for most users; ask them to interact with a purely text interface, and they'll look at you like you grew a set of antennae. But the Swing library is difficult to absorb due to its size, and to tell the truth, the results I have seen with simple Swing were less than inspiring.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some dubious hacks.
Some of the hacks are, well, very hacky. The auto-completion class here is worthless, more of a bare starting place to mabye make something useful with a lot of work. But why bother when there is better code out there on the web (google "swinguistuff completion", or check out swinglabs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Belongs In Your Swing Toolkit
Simply put, this is an incredibly useful book for Swing programmers. I've written a fair amount of GUI code and have needed several all-encompassing Swing books strewn about my desktop while doing so. Each had their own strengths and weaknesses, so if you had the right collection you could pretty much figure out how to do anything. (Except GridBagLayout of course :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but only for the right purpose
This is an absolutely outstanding book, but it depends on your intent. This is not a general purpose Java book.In fact, the Java aspect is almost incidental. This is a data structures and algorithms book. It's intent is to teach core computer science concepts that trace their roots back literally decades, and will hold until the day comes when someone figures out how to exceed the Turing model, which will change life as we know it so substantially that *all* your computer books will become instantly obsolete. In the mean time, if you want to learn Java per se, do not buy this book!If you want to understand the building blocks of computer science, definitely buy this book. It's ability to concisely address all the key concepts is amazing.I teach a computer science class on data structures and algorithms, and I evaluated several books other than this one.At first glance, I did not like this book because it was so easy to read and presented concepts so effectively that I thought it was too lightweight. But as I read it, I was amazed at how well it covered everything, and did it with brevity and clarity. It starts from basic sets and linked structures and makes it all the way through complex trees and graphs.Again, don't get it if just learning Java is your goal, that is definitely not its purpose, but if you want to understand the foundational programming tools of computer science, this book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to have
It's a very good book, and it was useful for me, though am very new to Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars teaches highly value added skills
All mainstream computer languages implement a common set of data structures and algorithms. If you are a computer science student, you must learn these at a level that you can at least facilely code using them. What language you do it in is probably secondary. Well here, Lewis and Chase instantiate the pedagogy in Java. A good choice. They have updated this second edition so that it uses Java 1.5 (aka Tiger).

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing pro in this book
I really don't like this book, and don't understand the positive reviews it got. It's a vague and shallow overview of a bunch of ajax-related framework that will not help you get anything useful done. Buy only if you have money to waste. If you are a Java developer interested in Ajax, and looking for a useful book, try "Practical Ajax Projects with Java Technology". Not perfect but worth some money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent intro for building Ajax-based web apps
"Ajax" is simple ... but if you want to use Ajax, then you need to write JavaScript.Quite probably lots of client-side JavaScript.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those interested in Aax techniques
As users demand a richer website experience and developers try to create sites that don't require additional client-side add-ons many are turning to the combination of Ajax and Java.Of course Ajax does not require Java as it will work with ActiveX as well but the point is that the client does not need to add anything that is not already included in any modern browser.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as useful as expected
This book would have been better if it had been written by people who had the ability to be a bit more objective about these technologies.(The authors work for Sun, of course.)There is a large portion of the book devoted to repeated explanations about why the J2EE platform is the best available. There are a number of plugs for client-side Java programs (applets, etc.), which is a marginal technology in practical terms, despite its theoretical advantages.I just wanted more objective information and less marketing hype. That being said, the book does have some useful information.A better and more dispassionate look at the J2EE platform spec is "Java for the Web with Servlets, JSP, and EJB" published by New Riders.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overview of technologies and architectural models
The book is a high level overview of the application design with the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. It may be helpful for someone who wants to know how different architectural choices and technologies fit together in an enterprise application.5-0 out of 5 stars Essential read for designing J2EE applications
A must read for seasoned professionals and those new to the subject.Invaluable insights and guidelines are detailed at every tier of architecting a J2EE enterprise application.I found myself frequently relating to the examples and wishing I had read this book to help with earlier projects. This would have saved hours of re-factoring because the authors have already detailed solutions to common design problems. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book!
This book will give you a new perspective on the topic and will outline how to use some interesting tools and technologies.I enjoyed reading and learning from it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Giving some insights, but is not practical at all
The book begins with a clear overview of software architecture, leading the reader to the vision of building enterprise web apps with ease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This is a great book. The author provides a simple and fantastic pattern for developing lightweight Java applications, based on software engineering best practices. This provides a nice foundation for delving deeper into the subject matter covered throughout the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for basic techniques
I was looking for some more advanced features than were offered, but it looks like it will be helpful to me moving forward.I build alot of forms in Adobe Acrobat. If you have never done javascript in Acrobat, or have intermediate knowledge, it may be a helpfull book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I love this book! I am a professional graphic designer that does not know how to write any JavaScript. I just wanted to be able to create more dynamic pdf files. The author did a great job explaining the JavaScript used in this book in a way that non programmers can grasp!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Step for Javascript Beginners
I have been making forms in Acrobat since version 3.0, and have a background in Dbase III, Foxpro, Visual Basic .NET, and SQL 2000. However, I never learned Javascript formally or in-depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I think that this book is a great place to start with Java.I have been reviewing books to replace Head First Java as a text at a local community college. To me the vast majority of texts out there do not deal with objects soon enough and spend too much time with GUI's and Applets without giving a good foundation in the language first. This book gives a broad perspective of the language without cluttering it up with a bunch of eye candy. It is the first that I have seen that deals with generics, threading, and enums and does so in a manner that will not cause the new user to choke. In addition to providing clear examples and explanations, the author also gives real world usages of the material taught. There are examples of when to use and not to use certain features, and what the pitfalls and potential traps are that a new coder might not be aware of.All in all this is going to make a great text.

im only 13 years old but i understude this book perfectly it covers all the basics of the two subjects and some of the advanced studys. anyone new or oldto these subjects need to ave this but becouse nothing is perfect i give it a four

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on JMS
I've been working with WebSphere for over 5 years (since the beginning) and this was still worth reading. Great book full of examples, step-by-step "labs". This is focused on WebSphere and MQ, but will be very helpful to those who wants to use MQ with any other J2EE server. If you are not MQ and not WebSphere user - this still will be helpful since it has great deal of JMS basics, but you will have to use your vendor's tutorials and examples instead of those in the book. Concepts are still the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book for JMS
This is a very decent book for JMS.It works out well to learn the basics. It goes into good depth on the basics. After the basics your pretty much on your own for getting too advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to learn JMS!
This book makes the process of learning JMS easy for all skill levels.Dr. Yusuf provides real-world examples in a language that is down to earth. He has assembled its content into sections for someone just learning JMS while providing code samples for the seasoned developer. I found the "how to" diagrams extremely helpful when configuring Enterprise JMS in WebSphere. This is a must have for anyone interested in JMS and how it's applied in an IBM WebSphere environment. This is an excellent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of advanced unit testing
Rainsberger does a very good job of detailing the techniques to unit test difficult code; including xml, ejb, servlets, jsps etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Put this next to Knuth and The Gang of Four on your bookshelf
This isn't necessarily the best introduction for absolute beginners (I would recommend /Pragmatic Unit Testing/ for that), but it is required reading for server-side Java, as most other reviewers have pointed out. But it's more than that--it's one of those rare computer books that transcends its subject matter. Why? Because it can make you a better programmer. While some of the credit can rightly be given to unit testing and Test-Driven Development in general, Rainsberger's book makes you /see/ better ways to write and refactor your code. The breadth and depth of examples is astonishing--he convincingly shatters "but it's too hard to test that" arguments with well-researched, non-trivial examples. In fact, I'd say that this is almost a better J2EE tutorial than most books about J2EE proper.
4-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for using Java+J2EE+JUnit in the real world

5-0 out of 5 stars I Second Thomas Duff's Review
The JFC Swing Tutorial Second Edition is among the very best how-to-do it programming books I've read---and I've read scores! For this reason, I felt compelled to write a review of the book, admiring its organization, applauding its authors and encouraging progammers who need to to write Java GUIs to hurry up and by it.But then I read Thomas Duff's review;I became redundant. My recommendation is to read Mr. Duff's excellent review---knowing that I agree with every word of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars great potential but poor delivery
This book has a great potential to be instructive, however, i give it a one star because it fails miserably in the delivery. The book has one full example in chapter 2 then after that all the examples are from the CD and the information about a particular issue such as comboboxes for example is strewn with code snippets that only address the most basic information; but when one looks at the full example from the CD, it contains much more in depth code that goes beyond the scope of the particular lesson. This left me with a confused situation. On one hand i have a very basic example that only shows the bare minimum of how to use a component and on the other i have code that introduces methods that are not very pertinent to the example and require more explanation. If it is pertinent then it should be explained fully which is not.
4-0 out of 5 stars Second edition is great
This tutorial is well laid out and thorough. It looks suitable for learning Swing (I'm already fairly proficient) except for beginners to GUIs. It's also well organized as a reference work. It's much easier to understand than "Java Swing" from O'Reilly.

Hello!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book by Malik (as always)
This is a great ground-up Java book, I was suffering with the book prescribed by my university, but I've benefited a lot from another book by Malik and, again, he did not fail me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro and overview if that's what you're looking for
I had used JUnit for several years before picking up this book and I like to think that I know the tool pretty well. So why did I decide to read this book? I read this book because I thought that might help me venture a bit outside my familiar JUnit turf and into doing test-first programming with languages other than Java. The short version? A very nice introduction to all the included xUnit ports. The long version? Read on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, explains the core of testing frameworks
I have been using JUnit for unit testing on Java for quite a while and I have also been exposed to other testing frameworks, but had never looked under the hood is such detail as Paul does in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper
This is a very solid, no-nonsense introduction to unit test framework.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book worth owning
The author covers some background, but mainly sticks to the business end of dealing with XML using java. The book is set out so you can read the parts that are relevant to getting a particular piece of technology working quickly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be more.
Second editions are always great. However, I find that I dont like all of the API reference in the book. I would rather look at APIs electronically and talk concepts in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, a little diffuse
Compared with .NET and XML this book tends to wander and rat hole a little. The book covers the basics. The SAX and DOM approaches. It also covers XSLT and serving XML. It also covers advanced topics like Castor, JDOM, and web services. But most of the subjects are covered at a cursory level and do not serve as a complete introduction.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is almost usless. The examples are unexplained and barely relevant to the current topic. This book just fails on a most basic level.Don't buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: Portals with the Java Portlet API: 5 stars
Building Portals with the Java Portlet API has been my constant companion for the past few weeks. I am working with a set of inter-related portlets. This book has helped me out of a few jams. For example, this book describes accurately how to perform inter-portlet communication; conversely, many online resources led the developers in my group astray (to use vendor specific extensions that did not provide much value over what is included with JSR-168; one could say the extensions provided negative value over what was provided).
1-0 out of 5 stars awful ! just awful!!
Don't buy this book!! The 'authors' don't even know the subject well themselives. It is very obivious from the start that they read some documents on the web and quickly put this thing together to make some quick bucks. everything seems to be copy and pasted from somewhere else. examples don't work. there is no explanations like a tech book should. you are left to do eveything by yourself.the most laughable thing is that you are going to have hard time to even get the hello world portlet to run since the author only offered one line hint: 'use maven' thats it. if you don't know maven then forget it. it is sad that apress let such a piece of trash get published. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practical Book
I have to say that this book is excellent from a practical view point - you need some complex JavaScript that you can use in the real world ?Then this is the book for you - want to learn Javascript ?Then look for something else.I gotta say that the first guy who did a review here is a bit of a pratt - it's not called 'learn simple Javascript' !!1-0 out of 5 stars Of little value
I suppose if you knew all there was to know about Java Script you could get through this book.I, on the other hand could make it to page 140 before I gave up in desperation.Read more
