5-0 out of 5 stars Your the man Sing
After looking at all the JINI books available except the O'Reilly one, I found this book to be best....by far!5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of material and code
I used this book in parallell with other books.5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, detailed, well-written book
Mr. Li starts out with a section focusing on advanced RMI and CORBA, and how they relate to Jini. The CORBA section includes examples for building a Java client/server using the ORB that comes with the JDK, as well as using a C client on Linux with the free ORBit ORB. An excellent overview of CORBA for people who have never used it or simply haven't used it with Java. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Referencing similarities with existing, familiar systems
Peer-to-peer (P2P) has progressed from a curiosity to a serious opportunity for businesses to move beyond the costs and limitations of traditional client-server based computing. With a choice of several new, maturing technologies, Java developers need a single source to explain the benefits of each technology and help them see how to fit the P2P "pieces" together - both in building new systems and integrating with existing ones. Java P2P Unleashed: With JXTA, Web Services, XML, Jini, JavaSpaces, and J2EE starts with a discussion of the P2P architecture, referencing similarities with existing, familiar systems while previewing several types of P2P applications. Java P2P Unleashed explains how to plan ahead for security, routing, performance and other issues when developing a P2P application. Each Java P2P technology is approached from a P2P perspective, focusing on implementation concerns Java developers will face while using them. The last section includes several large-scale examples of different P2P applications - managing content, building communities, integrating services, routing messages, and using intelligent agents to gather information. The final chapter looks ahead to future developments in Java P2P technologies, including the use of J2ME. Java P2P Unleashed is confidently recommended for Intermediate to Advanced level users. 752 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars One-stop shop
This book's title is a bit misleading, as it covers a lot more than P2P. In addition to JXTA, it also has chapters on Jini, and several chapters on Web services. Some of the chapters are better than others; the chapters on JXTA are especially informative. Because the book has many authors, some of the information is repeated, but that does not detract from the book's overall high quality.

2-0 out of 5 stars too wordy
this book has too much redundant info and lacks coherence. try the jxta in a nutshell instead; to the point, simple and clear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Jini? Buy this book
It is a VERY good book on Jini. This is my FIRST jini book. I am a jini newbie. This book has answered lot of my questions on Jini and has guided me, step by step, to develop my first Jini project. I realize this book isn't complete ... but as a software developer, I need a book which can guide me to write effective & good code AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I like it a lot ... really.5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of practical examples and material
This book helped med get hands-on-experience with Jini.5-0 out of 5 stars Good book on JINI
Among the JINI books, this book can be considered as very informative to learn about JINI technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars The format doesn't really suit the topic
You know what you are getting with the typical O'Reilly "Nutshell" book, and this one is no exception. It's about half tutorial/introduction and half API/service reference and (just about) small enough to carry around. Just the facts, Ma'am 4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad , not for beginners
This book is really not bad. It explains Jini in a straight forward manner, and is very useful for one that starts to learn Jini. It might be hard to understand for someone that knows Java and has no experiences in distributed objects, but don't blame the authors, distributed objects is not an easy topic. If it is the first touch to distributed objects, this book is NOT for you.4-0 out of 5 stars Good mix of tutorial and reference
Written in the Nutshell style of one-half tutorial, one-half reference, this is arguably a better buy than "Core Jini" if only because the latter is an 800-page gorilla that you'll never finish. "Nutshell" is a little more practical -- its early chapter onconfiguring the Jini neccessities (rmid, reggie, mahalo, etc.) is stronger, especially if you prefer to work with command-lines than trivial GUI's, asI would imagine most server-side types would.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information but code needs work
The book has a lot of good information though you need to be familiar with basic distributed programmins. The URL to download code does not work but i did find it (the code) at1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written
I admit that my programming experience is rather limited, but this book made me feel like a complete .... There is no denying that the author knows what he is writing about, but he does not convey that information in an easily understood manner. Unless you already know everything there is to know about RMI, networking and advanced Java programming, stay away from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than a Specification
I put off buying this for about a year because I was fooled by the title. Think of it as a primer on how to use Jini the way the people who developed Jini intended (rather than as a spec). That makes it very useful. Not ideal for someone who is considering using Jini and wants an overview, but a great "second book" on Jini. Similar to Keith Edwards' Jini "Example by Example".

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad, but...
The book gives pretty good Jini overview, but it's just that: overview. Don't expect any code examples. Also there is a lot of repetition where the author goes over the same points in different chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative yet simple to understand
Authoritative yet simple to understand "Jini technology: An Overview" provides very authoritative yet simple to understand language in introduction chapters. Graphics and examples are well presented with relevant and realistic examples. This book describes the various concepts using simple examples involving real world entities creating a perspective and excitement on things to come in future. I recommend this book for any one who would like to know Jini technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too big for a reference, but generally well structured
At just over 6cm (2.5 inches), it's a thick, heavy, book and the spine bends alarmingly as you read it. Despite this it's surprisingly readable, but I wouldn't want to carry it about with me.3-0 out of 5 stars Won't teach you how to code it..but a good reference book
This book is horrible if you want to learn how to code JINI.The good points are the wonderful RMI primer in the Appendix, and nice explanations of what is actually going on for each aspect of a JINI network, chapter by chapter.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but code breaks on two machines

4-0 out of 5 stars It's just examples, but at least it admits it
If you learn better from an example than from a dry reference, this book will be a great way to get into Jini.2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time with Edwards
The main problem I find in this book is that Edwards uses an example, and then to build upon it adding more functionality, extends it...again and again etc.You are left with a confusing hierarchy of classes.2-0 out of 5 stars rushed to publication
This book looks like it was rushed into publication. The example code is formatted incorrectly in every example and much of the text is straight out of Edwards' "Core Jini" (a better book but somewhat outdated).I also don't like Edwards' informal style of writing. The text is peppered with colloquialisms and redundancy and is generally not concise. He explains the one to four page code chunks awkwardly in text before or after the code rather than provide useful comments in the code. The comments that are in the code are sometimes obvious like documenting a function "addRates" as "adds a new currency exchange rate".I hope Edwards is writing a better book for Jini 1.2. Keith, if you are, let me know and I'll help you with that pesky English. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for serious developers.
I would reccomend this book only to people who are new to Java Programming and want an overall treatise with something on everything possible server side. But for those who are already in this field for a while and want to build on their knowledge this book would be a big disappointment. The other main drawback of this book is its bulkiness.2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Professionals
I bought this book a few months ago and I found out that it covers the basics of J2EE.Imagine 10+ authors. Each talks about their own thing and then they slap it together and call it a Wrox Published book.My gripes with this book are:5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
This Book is very disappointing. It has over 300 pages, but only about 100 are book chapters. The remaining pages (over 200) are just appendixes describing packages!!!5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this one
I liked this book as a beginner to Jini Technology.a very basic starting point with about 100 pages of author descriptions and examples, then several hundred pages of profile listings. The profile listings are very complete and cover everything you need to get going in Jini and J2ME.The examples throughout the book were clear and specific to the points the author is trying to make in each chapter. The personal profile listing in the back of the book is especially handy to have and the book never moves far from my computer - the reference aspect is great.I only wanted a basic introductory book, so I wasn't looking for a 700-page War and Peace type of thing. If you're looking for a huge tome on Jini, you may be better off with another book. But if you're looking for a good (short) basic starting point that's not going to take you a month to get through, this is a really good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good short book, great appendix
This is a great introductory book.Far from being overwhelming, it gives the technical reader a solid base on which to build. The best part about the book may just be the appendices, however. This is the only book where you can get a complete listing of the RMI and Personal Profiles, which is really useful to have around if you decide to go into the subject later on in more depth.Read more
