4-0 out of 5 stars Productive Pedagogy for Parents
Prensky offers a succinct and well-rounded discussion concerning the potential of computer games as learning tools. His assertion that, children are already learning from computer games - that parents and educators alike need to tap into this motivation for learning - is well supported by a wide variety of examples, from specific games to the testimony of parents and educators. The uncomplicated language makes for easy reading and the practical advice to parents is enthusiastic and practical.
5-0 out of 5 stars A highly thought provoking work that is a vital resource to parents teachers and academics
Marc Prensky has done a wonderful job of writing this book. I feel that it is a book that should be read by every single parent on the planet if they are to have any hope of understanding why children find video games so captivating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Advice for Digital Immigrants
This is a book I feel all parents should read.Though I'm what Prensky would call a "digital immigrant," my accent isn't too thick.I may be nearing 40, but I got involved with computers as they came around and have never been afraid of technology.Gaming, Internet, etc.--I love it all. And, despite the fact my gaming time has reduced as I've gotten older, I've never really understood the hysteria over computer games.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers Many Topics
This book hit on many topics and is a good reference book to use throughout the various stages of your divorce. Touches on a wide variety of things and generally answers some questions you might have. Some advice in this book I did not see in other divorce books such as what to do about debt in both of your names. Outlines what to do about credit card debt in both names as well as mortgage debt in both names. Mortgage debt is harder to get out of your name even if your spouse is awarded the asset. You are both still liable for mortgage debt until it is paid off or refinanced. Even if your divorce decree says that your former spouse is responsible for paying it. Book tells you how to communicate with credit card companies in regard to protecting your credit.
5-0 out of 5 stars thorough, reliable
Divorce for Dummies is a thorough overview of the divorce process and ways to make it easier and less expensive. I know the authors from interviewing them for my Internet radio show, [...] and other articles, and I know they are very careful in the resources and information they present. I also believe they really do have the consumer's best interest at heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best use of the term "private members" in a patterns book
OK, when I saw this under the tree I thought that the Gang had a new little workbook deal out or something, and then I saw that there was a silhouette of a naked woman on the front and that it was very very doubtful that this was going to help me figure out distributed programming. But at that point I didn't care anymore and it is now officially my favorite gift.Applies the rules of patterns (strategies, refactorings, all that) to dating and it's hilarious. Definitely a kick for anyone with even remotely geeky tendencies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Way more fun than regular patterns
It's like the Gang of Four had a little too much to drink (or something) at a National Lampoon party and went home and wrote a sequel. I think my favorite pattern is goTo guy, which is prefaced with a note that the article "GoTo Considered Harmful" doesn't apply to dating patterns. Haven't tried any of the patterns since my SO disapproves strongly of multithreading.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is hilarious
I don't know what kind of mind is so into patterns that they come out the other end with this book, but the result is very funny. You need to be a geek to get it, but if you do it's definitely worth it. It's a satire of patterns and of some fairly leading figures in the computer industry. Basically the authors say that the Gang of Four came up with these dating patterns in college: Trojan Proxy, Interested Listener, Half Bad Boy Plus Protocol, Unexpected Persistence, Container-Managed Relationships, etc. Christopher Alexander was in on it, too, starting off kind of geeky and playing Dungeons and Dragons and going on to be a dating machine. 3-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully persuasive or totally histrionic? You be the judge.
With this book, Marie Winn has written an arch (though lengthy) indictment of television's pervasive and largely detrimental impact on childhood culture. With sixty years' worth of data, studies and surveys as ammo, she makes a nearly airtight case for why television should be strictly limited for the elementary children and why the recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics that no children under the age of 2 be allowed to watch is not just commendable, but physiologically and neurologically imperative. She lays out her small mountain of evidence that the practice of ritualistic television watching dulls children's sensitivity to others, negatively affects family life, nearly annihalates their motivation to contribute to their own development as critical thinkers and, especially, critical and enthusiastic readers, and generally, is neither necessary nor desirable as the cultural stronghold it's become.
5-0 out of 5 stars An enlightening book on the silver screen
While Winn's thought-provoking book focuses on the sociological harms TV can cause, it falls short in other areas, namely, the spiritual and neurological harms of TV. Another book, "Television: Prelude to Chaos" by Frank Poncelet, answered some of these questions I had after reading Winn's book. I also liked the hilarious cartoons throughout Winn's book that illustrate how silly it really is to wast your life away in front of the idiot box / boob tube / one-eyed monster.

This is a chilling book as it describes the addiction to video games that are of serious concern regardless of the good or bad content of individual games.Boys and young men are becoming addicted to games that are interferring with their high school and college years and even into their marriages. One of the chapters is appropriatly entitled "Lost Boys".I grieve for the lost potental stolen away by video and computer games.I recommend this book highly to parents who are struggling with trying to control video games in their homes and achieve balance with something that was supposed to be for recreation but is now taking over all of their kid's free time. The behavior that I have observed regarding my own sons, their friends, and students at school is accurately described in my book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new and/or exciting.........
Good reference for someone just starting out.......but is not a definite "must have." You can spend very little time on the internet to find the same and MUCH MORE information for free. I was very disappointed to learn I had already signed up for the same sites mentioned in the book and have been a member for at least 5-6 years on those sites.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good on saving resources, not so much on earning
I have been making money online since 1998 and am always checking out resources to help me make more. The Mom's Guide to Earning and Saving Thousands on the Internet offers some terrific savings ideas and resources in one place. It's especially helpful for busy moms who don't have time to research and investigate resources themselves.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Mom's Guide to Earning and Saving Thousands on the Internet
This book is a great resource for oodles of websites for almost everything.Over the last few years I have spent a lot of time on the internet and already am aware of most of the content offered, but there was lots of stuff that was new to me as well.I was hoping for a little more on the earning 'thousands'aspect, but I think that is in part due to limitations on what is available on the internet.Of course, it also depends on how much time you are willing to spend doing these things.Overall, I thought this was a great comprehensive guide to anyone who uses the internet, not just moms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great safety guide for parents of Internet-generation teens...
While parents may have a hard time getting their teenagers to read the safety guides as they are much more interested in reading the most recent posts on their friends' blogs, Kevin and Dale's book is a comprehensive guide for parents who =need= to know how MySpace works and how their children are using it.As a talking tool and a resource for parents, the book is right on, particularly useful for parents who are not especially tech-saavy.The specific ways to avoid being tracked, examples of ways MySpace can be used appropiately and also how information can be misused and even put your children in danger, are all incredibly valuable and written in an easy, accessible manner.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start "the talk"...
I recently received a copy of the book MySpace Safety: 51 Tips for Teens and Parents by Kevin Farnham and Dale Farnham.Since I have two teens (and I'm their parent), I thought it might be interesting to see what they had to say.As a means for some common ground discussion (and to help educate the adult side), this works pretty well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide for parents
In this book, authors Kevin and Dale Farnham--whose daughter was one of the original members of myspace.com--have created a comprehensive guide to the entire MySpace web domain. In addition to offering specific safety tips, the authors guide the reader step-by-step through each facet of myspace.com.For parents, this is an excellent overview of the site, and the book will likely increase their awareness of MySpace's various functions, settings, and possible risks for their children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Digitize this!
This is a book for dummies! It assumes you know nothing about scanners, cameras or the digital world. If that's the case, then this is the book for you. However, I found it difficult to read as the author does not get to the point. Too much time is spent on the simplest things while ignoring the point of the text. It would have been nice to pick up a book like this and get to the point of 'how to' without having to jump hoops through the history of things. That was not the point of the purchase of such a book nor the representation of the cover. There was no point reading the entire text as I quickly realized that much of it was "filler" text and I could skip to the parts I thought were interesting. My recommendation would be to look for other title options before this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to a relatively newsubject
When my father died a few years ago, my mother began systematically sorting through eight decades of accumulated stuff and giving the next generation "first dibs" on anything they wanted before the remainder was discarded. Of course, I took anything relating to the family's history, including old correspondence, military and employment files, and about forty pounds of old photo albums and several shoeboxes of loose snapshots. I'm slowly, steadily working my way through them, scanning not only photographs but also documents and old letters into a digitized format, cleaning up some of the older items with Photoshop, writing up brief text files (to be attached to the image files) explaining those people, places, and circumstances I could identify (and also transcribing my mother's penciled notes from the backs of many of the photos), and collecting everything in some sort of order on CDs for later distribution to the rest of the family. (Christmas is always coming.) Now, I'm reasonably computer-savvy and I have professional training in archival conservation, so all this seemed pretty obvious to me, but that probably would not be the case for many non-techies.

Editorial Review

The Helms have put together an excellent introductory guide to doing genealogical research online. They've avoided the usual trap of organizing their book by resources, which may be easy for the author but makes it harder on the user. So instead of devoting this chapter to useful Web sites, that chapter to valuable newsgroups, and so forth, they've organized the book in a way closer to the way you'd organize good family research. 3-0 out of 5 stars very basic
This book is for the beginner genealogist. It tells you how to plan your research and what kind of computer equipment to have. It takes you step by step in certain websites. It is extremely boring, even for a genealogy book. I was hoping for more info on what is contained in individual websites, where to find certain types of documents and explantions of software available to the genealogist. It is great if you don't have a clue but if you can navigate the internet on your own, you don't need this book. I will use it occasionally but The Genealogy Sourcebook and The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy are much more in depth.

Editorial Review

In the town of Sunnyvale, in the heart of Silicon Valley, every day brings sunshine and progress, and everything is supposed to work out okay. Not surprisingly, this thoughtful and deeply affecting memoir tells the story of a family that falls apart (or rather "off the Norman Rockwell easel") in the midst of this fantasy. When Mrs. Goodell decides to get a divorce, she blasts off from Planet Marriage and hitches her future to the embryonic Apple Computer company. The other family members, however, quickly unravel. Jeff, the oldest son, quits his Apple job for the casinos of Lake Tahoe, fully believing he is "leaving behind a bunch of nerdy machine heads who were destined to live small, narrow lives empty of romance or mystery." His father, a landscape architect and a family man devastated by the divorce, finds himself becoming an anachronism in the Silicon Valley chip-and-code culture. 5-0 out of 5 stars modern American family tragedy
It sounds completely trite, but I could not put this book down. The true story of the author's family, this is a story that most middle-class Americans can relate to. It's a story of divorce, coming of age, confusion, madness and family bonds. It's heartbreakingly honest and a cautionary tale for how things can spiral out of control.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.
I didn't know anything about this story or author when I picked up this book; I just wanted to read it because I grew up in Sunnyvale (and still live in the Bay Area). I found that the story moves along quietly and rather gently while describing serious subject matter: a family is broken apart by divorce. Meanwhile, the vast promise of the Silicon Valley is the background. It was a very honest portrayal of life and troubles in this area, very authentic to me: my father was an immigrant, drawn to California and the Bay Area as the promised land, and he was very much like the men in this book, wanting success, to make something of himself, expecting the best from his children, pressuring them to succeed because how can you possibly fail when you live in an Eichler home in a place called Sunnyvale in the place that created the technological revolution? Like the author himself, I was not the least bit drawn to the computer industry, wanting instead to be artistic and creative. Therefore, I never belonging here. I've been trying to get out of this area for years; in the book, the lead character/author moves to New York. I never realized that those of us who grew up in Sunnyvale could have similar life experiences despite differences in ethnicity, family background, etc. Your hometown influences you and your family and every part of your life. How nice to read a book that illustrates this so effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid portrayal of the valley
I felt so connected to "the valley" while reading this book.I grew up in Sunnyvale and surrounding towns and knew exactly where the author was when he described the area. What for me seemed like "Anywhere, USA" became unique in my eyes for the first time.It has been an experience watching the area explode with change thoughout my life.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars educational
Great book.Very counter-culteral.Computers are attractive because they mean children need less one-on-one, and because companies can make money off of them.Healy tackles the important question, are they good for children?2-0 out of 5 stars Failure to Connect - Failure to Explain
All right, all right.I get the point."Computers are bad. They keep our children from learning.Yet adults keep buying them. Therefore adults are stupid."I've read almost this entire book and I am really getting the feeling that Healy is beating a dead horse - she keeps pushing the same points over and over. Her arguments have some credibility, and her examples are generally valid. However, as critical readers we need to examine her basic premises for validity.I think that her basic premises are over-stated and somewhat simplistic.2-0 out of 5 stars The book Failure to Connect failures to connect
It is hard to tell how Ms. Healy's book contributes to the field of educational knowledge regarding kids and computers' use. The first problem with the book is the lack of a clear focus in a specific audience. Is she writing for parents? Is it a book written to help teachers ("How do we teach kids this skill"p.252)? Or is it addressed to scholars in the field? That does not seem to be clear and the book "failures to connect" with its audience.
