5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Frank Raggo
My name is Dr. Frank Raggo and I have read all of Mr. Wisniewski's books. Wireless and Cellular Networks is a great climax in the other 2 books written by this author Network Administartion and Advanced Network Administration. I am a PH.d at the University of Michigan and teach a course in Wireless Networking using this book.It is a great book explaining the technologies of wireless networking covering the latest trends and standards from soup to nuts. The book also covers cordless and cellular networks as well. I highly recommend this book to all who wish to learn about designing and building wireless networks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book you need to pass CWNA test
This is the one of the best technical books I've read. Clear and detailed explanations, easy to read, 'not dry' - it gives you what you need to pass CWNA and more. You will return to this book every now and then in need for good explanation of wireless foundation (RF math, surveying, security, standards...). When studying, I ALWAYS use Internet as an aid in preparing for exams, and I did this time, too. It helps to read another author's lines to deepen your knowledge, or just to find another examples of the subject. Don't get me wrong: this book really IS your only study guide, but it is worth to take few steps more to be sure you do well on the test (after all, it's your money). It is important to visit CWNP's web page at www.cwnp.com for current errata. I used this book as preparation for CWNA exam and passed it with over 90%. But don't think CWNA is easy: prepare well, pay attention to details (!), be sure you REALLY understand what your are reading, take your time to prepare, and good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide - Practice exam not included
The book covers all the topics and is a complete study guide but it does not include any practice test for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased
The book was an eye-opener for me and I now know a lot more about 802.11 standarads...written in plain english, it is easy to comprehend...The author does not compromise on the depth of information...I would recommend focussing on chapters 6-13 in order to clear the exam.. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the definitive book on the Domain Name System (DNS), the powerful scheme that facilitates the translation of English-like domain names (www.amazon.com) into computer-comprehensible Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (208.216.182.15). If you run a DNS server of any kind, particularly under Unix, you need to have this book on hand.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Presented Concepts and Implementations (5th ed.)
Foreword: I have been running my own DNS servers on OpenBSD and FreeBSD for about 4 years. All of my previous DNS knowledge was obtained from the man pages and online tutorials. 5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on DNS and Bind
First off, the most recent edition of this book was published in May 2006, so all reviews prior to that are discussing previous editions of this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not as clear as it could be
I found this book to be informative, but I sometimes had trouble understanding what they where saying.I found The Concise Guide to DNS and BIND by Nicolai Langfeldt to be more understandable in some places. If you have a good grasp of other parts of unix system administration, this book would most likely be fine. If you are more of a beginner and only want one book, get The Concise Guide. However, I recommend getting both, because they supplement each other very well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too high-level
I expected this book to be a good technical reference (much like just about every other Sam's Teach Yourself book). The book fails to deliver technical information and is primarily focused on how to perform tasks when USING Sharepoint that just about anyone who can read and click would be able to figure out without the help. This book is overly simplistic and is targeted to the END USER who is not even familiar with using Internet Explorer (several pages spent on what the different features of IE are).

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thorough; a great reference book
Prior to reading this book, I know nothing about Sharepoint. After reading this book, I felt comfortable and well equipped to administer Sharepoint. It is simple to read and is also thorough in covering all of the components of a Sharepoint site. This book also covered the various tasks of a Sharepoint site administrator which I found to be valuable. A great learning tool for the novice and a great reference tool for the experienced Sharepoint site administrator. I also recommend the "Microsoft Sharepoint 2003 Unleashed, 2nd Edition" book by the same authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.

Editorial Review

Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible 802.11 book
I tend not to read and review books on as broad a subject as "wireless networking."I've read and reviewed wireless security books like Real 802.11 Security and Wi-Foo, but 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Ed (8WN2E) was a departure for me.Thankfully, 8WN2E is an incredible book.It exceeded my expectations and definitely earned its "Definitive Guide" status.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide To Wireless Networks
'802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide' by Matthew Gast is a very comprehensive look at wireless networks from top to bottom.Spanning 600+ pages, this is an extensive look at one of the most important technologies of the last 50 years. No matter where you are on this planet, wireless networking has changed your life and no doubt it will continue to expand as we humans invent and adapt all over the planet.Buyer beware, this guide is not for the basic reader, rather it is a thorough look at the technology and it can get confusing at times!
5-0 out of 5 stars Your Guid to Wi-Fi
Gast's comprehensive coverage of the 802.11 standard is definitly worthy of the title 'definitive guide'.The reading is fairly fast paced and written in such a way that readers can skip to certain chapters and gain insight on the high level of the protocol with previous knowledge of the lower chapters. For example, one can read about 802.1X and its application to Wi-Fi without needing to read previous chapters as the author provides any re-cap that will be needed from earlier chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cisco LAN Switching Fundamentals review
Cisco LAN Switching Fundamentals is a well-written, easy-to-understand book, even for people whose first language is not English. The book explains the bases of 4 of the most common families of Cisco Switches: 5000/5500, 4000/4500, 6000/6500 and 3750. It goes quite in depth into showing the differences between these families, and showing where they fit best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Looks Like Size does not matter anymore! Filled with Gems!
This book is only 375 pages and one can read it during a weekend. But do not underestimate it because of its size as it is filled with information and tips which you wont find anywhere else. Do you know what scp is? Do you know what IGMP fallback is? Do you know how to find out for an IP pair, which link in the etherchannel bundle getting used? The book is filled with these kinds of tips throughout. Its your source of quick lookups at work when you are stressed looking for something. It can help you to recall what certain knob is used for? The book covers all major areas of Lan Switching. It has a detailed chapter on Cisco switches architecture and it is indeed very informative. Chapter 11 goes into Campus design details and some common pitfalls are discussed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable For the Almost Beginner up to Intermediate
After the dot.com bubble burst, a lot of us had serious concerns about Cisco as a company. There was so much used equipment (much of which hadn't even been taken out of the box) that new sales had to fall. But time marches on and Cisco has clearly survived and even thrived. But there have been some changes. New products and even new product directions have come about. Still, however more than half the revenue of the company comes out of ethernet switches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifies the complex and highlights the important
I have many texts on RF Engineering and quite a few on wireless networks. This has become the first port of call for understanding Antennae and propogation in this physically treacherous environment. Many real life designs rely on multi-path propogation to ensure access points and other such devices work. This is not often clear in the documentation however. This book will help you solve this thorny problem in your network and show you how to battle reflections effectively. It has the right amount of mathematics to make some predictions reasonably possible.A far cry from the norm in this rapidly evolving field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wireless without the hype
Dan Dobkin has managed to encompass in this book information that most people would take 15 to 20 years to learn. This book is useful not only for engineers researching wireless networks but also for theengineer/student that needs to understand the fundamentals of all aspects of radio systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless designers!
A must have for any wireless designer. The author's ability to clearly explain fundamental RF concepts makes this a perfect book for any student of radio. His real world examples, also makes this an indispensable tool for the accomplished professional. The pictures and graphs are extremely insightful and clearly illustrate the points that the author is trying to make.

"Indispensable" is the one word which best describes this work.(In the interest of full disclosure, I've known Christina Hattingh for several years. As I've written in the acknowledgements of my books she is "one of the finest engineers I've known and worked with."I've never met Tim Szigeti.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A solid reference for the enterprise user and service-provider alike!
When this book first arrived at my doorstep, I figured it would be a quick read, a review of information I was already fairly comfortable with, and just another presentation of the same-old material. I couldn't have been more wrong! Over the lastseveral months, a number of hours have been devoted to leafing through the pages of valuable information, learning something new every time! Szigeti and Hattingh have done a superb job in putting this reference together. From the basic fundamental concepts of QoS, to the tuning and optimization of QoS policies, this book covers it all pretty well. QoS design considerations, both on the campus as well as the WAN, are covered in a way that is easy to understand. A significant amount of material is dedicated to explaining QoS support on the various models of Cisco Catalyst switches, with a solid breakdown of each.A number ofcase studies guide you through real-world examples of how QoS technologies are best leveraged, in clear, concise detail. The at-a-glance guides in the back of the book are also good reference material. For the enterprise user and service provider alike, this guide will prove to be a valuable tool when tackling in the toughest of QoS tasks. I would give this book a solid 5 on the scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being amazing! Great job with this book, keep up the good work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any network engineer

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction, a little code heavy
This is a nice introduction, reasonably well written, introduction to using Windows automation through VBScript. About a third of the book acts as an introduction to the basics of VBScript for use in this context. He covers basics like variables, conditionals, functions, error handling, and more. The other two thirds of the book covers a variety of topics like shell extensions, ASP, XML, active directory and more. This is up-to-date stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not to basic for this administrator
Was Joseph DeMarco (previous review) reading the same book? The book has several chapters on AD scripting, and they showed me how to create users, delete them, create OUs, and more. The book has THIRTEEN chapters on learning VBScript, which I didn't know and now I finally do. They're clearly written and they're not super-deep, so I got through them quickly. If you're a professional developer, this book isn't for you. If you're a systems administrator, I can't see how this book wouldn't be helpful.1-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic for System Administrators
I bought this book based on other customers' reviews. The book talks very generally about scripting for Active Directory. The book contains the word "VBScript", as well as "Managing Windows". However, it covers very little about the in's & out's of what it possible. The sections on ADSI are watered down and virtually useless. The script examples are simple, and aren't thorough at all. I found more information on Microsoft's web site. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource on a little understood subject.
CiscoPress's "Cisco LAN Switching" by Clark and Hamilton is a book I have mixed feelings on.For years, this book has been considered the "Bible" or the "Source" for LAN switching topologies. But I feel if I am going against the grain when I write that I have never put this book on the same altar as Doyle's Routing TCP/IP books or some others. It is an odd feeling to be the lone voice out.

This book provides great information on the core switching concepts. The Spanning tree section is excellent.Unfortunately the text's age is starting to show. Most of the examples are in CatOS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful guide to issues in Cisco switching
Cisco LAN Switching by Kennedy Clark and Kevin Hamilton is considered a definitive guide to Cisco switching - and rightly so. The book contains an exhaustive presentation on all aspects of switching - from the basics of switching technologies, to the protocols and algorithms used in campus switching, to real-world designs of campus switching environments. All this with an added bonus of tidbits of humor thrown into the discussion of serious, no-nonsense topics!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful VBScript reference
This is not intended for beginners in scripting or VBScript in particular. But for anyone with even moderate programming or scripting, this may be all you'll need to become familiar with VBScript.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
This is not the book to learn the basics of VBScript, but it's exactly what I needed; a good reference book. I got tired of trying to find syntax of commands and functions online. Now I have it at my fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars NUTSHELL
I don't have this book, I've never read it.But the negative reviews for it are out of line.People have reviewed it claiming it isn't for the beginner or for learning VB Script.NO KIDDING!!It is called NUTSHELL for a reason. It is a reference book, NOT a learning book.Don't give bad reviews for a book because you were too stupid to realize you bought the wrong book. That's just as bad as buying a Java book and complaining that it doesn't have any Javascipt examples in it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition is outstanding as a tutorial and as a reference
I owned the first edition of this book, and although somewhat confusing, I was able to learn VBScript from it with some time and patience. Thus, I just expected the second edition to be an update of the first. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the second edition had been greatly improved. There are clearer and more frequent examples, the text is an easier read, and there are frequent and illuminating illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for starters
I bought this book, as I wanted to write some simple VBScripts to help automating some laborious manual process for my job. This book is so easy to browse through and as I already have some knowledge of VB Programming and so I can easily browse through the chapters. Even for a beginner this is a good book to start with. I could start writing the scripts I wanted for my job and I like this book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, be sure to buy the 2nd Edition
This is an outstanding book.At first I was confused by some of the older reviews, until I realized that Amazon is still selling the old 1st edition, and many folks are buying that one instead of the newer, much better Second Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in-depth info for a very under documented topic
Jason & Stacy have done a great job digging into the details of site definitions. You rarely find this level of depth in available resources, including in the WSS/SPS SDK or MSDN. Wish I had this a long time ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book so far on the topic...
While there are other books that have been published in the past year on the topic of SharePoint and customizations and what not, I would have to say that this book brings all the pieces together, gives the explanations to UI developers, administrators and developers that they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Book on SharePoint
