5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for learning Java...
If you prefer your computer technology learning in textbook style, then this is an excellent choice in books...Introduction to Java Programming - Comprehensive Version (Sixth Edition) by Y. Daniel Liang. It's an entire college-level course in Java in one very big (and well-written) volume...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro through intermediate text
I've tried learning C++ many times and kept getting lost between the introductory and intermediate level texts. It was suggested that I consider trying Java, so I reluctantly found this text by Liang and am making my way through. Not only am I not getting bogged down in the C-compiler, but Liang's explinations and examples are so much clearer than anything I ran into in the C++ texts I had used.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to Learn
The author does a great job of presenting a complicated subject in an easy to grasp step by step method. Dr. Liang obviously understand how to both teach and educate at the same time. I found this book through a formal class, but we only covered a subset of the chapters. I took the book and finished on my own. The book is that well structured and written. As a pleasant side note, it also contains zero errors that I could find, contrary to may software books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete and Well Thought Out
There are plenty of C# books available. None of them are cheap.Which one is right for you?If you want a well written up to date complete language refrence that you won't outgrow, then this book is for you.As an expericenced C++ programmer making the leap to C#, this book was extremely helpful. It is a constant companion next to my keyboard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult Book
I almost completed the book. The first 8 chapters are quite ok and good understandable. The chapters therafter are very difficult and are not so pleasant to read. I think they're too advanced for a moderate developer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't rely on the information in this book.
This book is CRAWLING with errors in it.The Microsoft Knowledge Base doesn't even cover many of them, either. The errors aren't just typos either.I'll give some examples of why you shouldn't waste your money on this book:

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book.
implementation and design of classes wise this book is replete with ideas. Since this book dealt with FDM, which are either cubbersome or difficult to program say american options, better is to deal with FE methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computational Finance made efficient
This book encapsulates all that is wonderful about OOP and shows how generic programming techniques (based on the STL) can be effectively applied to financial engineering and numerical analytic problems. The book requires only a first-course level knowledge of C++ (at the level of for example Ivor Horton's Beginning C++) and a first course level knowledge of Financial Mathematics (at the level of for example John Hull's masterpiece) and takes the reader on an entertaining journey through the basics of the STL and the applications of STL constructs to computational-financial and numerical-analytic problems, especially those relating to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Also, the author makes a persuasive case for finite-difference methods and deals with a few subtleties of the Crank-Nicholson algorithm. For best results, it should be read along with a decent book on the Standard Library (for example the one by Nicolai Josuttis). Overall, it's a pleasure to read and learn from, on a par with Mark Joshi's little design-patterns volume, and more detailed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in c++ instrument pricing, period.
Let me just say that I have a few financial modelling books, from Dr. Brooks to Mr. Joshi, and this is the best book by far.It clearly explain how to price a particular instruments using this poweful language. The book uses Standard Template Language (STL), by doing so your code are more readable and much faster. If I only had this book a few years back. Now I must say this book is for C++ programmers and Quants you really need to know C++ from beginning to end, templates, pointers, references, classes or that stuff you need it. This is the only book that comes with working code, it doesn't matter what type of compiler you have the code in the CD will work.Mr. Duffy explains how to model one factor and two factor Black-Scholes equations using finite differences, options(vanilla, exotic),interest rate and much more. The CD even comes with an Excel driver to transfer your data to Excel. Quant superstar Justin London is coming with his new book in a few months, and that book might over take this one, but as of right now this is the best C++ financial pricing book around. You can't go wrong with this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Step By Step Indeed
This is an excellent resource for learning C#/.NET.It covers the basics of the language and then eventually heads into more advanced topics such as ADO.NET, ASP.NET, etc.Like with any book, the more you know coming in, the more you can take advantage of it, but I would say that even someone new to programming can get a lot out of this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Pages
I liked this book a lot until I got to page 164. The text then skipped to page 197. I know I could get a replacement, but I have written notes all through the first part of the book. Buyer beware; check it out before you start reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro, but falls short in some areas
Overall I really liked this book.Though, I've found that in learning C# -- you'll require an assortment of reference and guidance books to successfully complete your journey.Mr Sharp does a great job in the early sections of the book and his step-by-step examples are also good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
If I was going to buy one book for SBS, this would be it.Actually, I have a couple of employees that manage SBS, so we have two copies...
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference
I agree with the comments of the other reviewers...but did want to add a couple of thoughts. The book is less than 700 pages, certainly not huge by Unleashed standards.Don't let this fool you.For example, chapter 13, covering Exchange Daisaster Recovery actually starts off with an incredibly clear description of the Exchange database structure. It just made the practices suggested in the rest of the chapter much more accessible.
5-0 out of 5 stars First 5 chapter review
I purchased Eriq Neales book, "SmallBusiness Server 2003 Unleashed". ISBN is 0-672-32805-4. So far, I have read the first five chapters in order. I intend to read the entire book in a sequential manner and then hopefully use it for field work. Here are my basic thoughts on those five chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars What else can I say....
There are plenty of 5 star reviews already raving about what I gained from reading the book. Read those for a more detailed review. During my C++ years, I read the exceptional Scott Meyer's `Effective C++' book, so I wanted to find the same production in the Java world. Bloch did an excellent job in writing this. This book is as close to the exact same thing except for Java. If you've worked in the C++ world and heading towards Java, definitely grab this book to quickly set the stage for your transfer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and priceless
Unlike some other books that says "Always do this" this book says "Consider doing this in such and such cases" and explains why. And instead of "Put in an exception as much description as possible" it says "Put the numbers, the rest is retrievable from the stack trace and the source code". Without any idealism this book gives very practical advices, so that you can get better results in less time. The writing style of this book is very concise and worth every minute of your time reading it. And unlike "Head First Design Patterns" the "Effective Java" does not need any "funny" pictures to be readable - it is fascinating by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Java Developers
I have never done more than play around with Java, but this book has still has had as much influence on my programming habits as any other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!
Advanced Modeling is a fantastic book, and pretty easy to follow with relatively few coding errors. There are some books out there that have errors in the code that they use, which makes it difficult or someone to learn the techniques.Even for those without a solid background in VBA, this book can benefit you to start learning how to code properly.Anyone who is relatively proficient with Excel can definitely gain a new trick or two from reading this book. All you really need to start using this book is a basic understanding of finance concepts (e.g. portolio theory, capital budgeting, binomial options pricing, Black-Scholes, etc.).The techniques that are taught are also useful in other modeling exercises, and not necessarily just for finance-related topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook for Financial Modellers
Yes, the book won't teach you CAPM, Black-Scholes, or much financial theory. But there is NO shortage of those books. There is a shortage of books with real-world Excel solutions to applying financial theory to data.I've had this book for a couple of years and have probably only used 10% of it, only because I don't have time, real business need, to do the rest.I sometimes take it to bed to read and dream of having the time to try out some of their other models. That's the only thing I can add to the other reviews here, the amount of love and passion for the subject put into this book. There's not one extra padded word or graphic in this book.Yes, if there was one book I'd have to take to a desert island with Excel and some financial data this would be it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really satisfying
One of the main points of programming books is to help the reader understand the models being programmed. On this count, "Advanced modelling in finance using Excel and VBA" fails miserably. There is very little explanation of the financial concepts and models.Anyone hoping to learn finance from this book will be very disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's more of a beginers book
It describes Javascript as used in web design and not as a separate language. Most Javascript books are like other language guides, you learn the language but have no idea what to do with it. This book is about manipulating the elements (& nodes) of a web page. It's easy to read and understand. After this you can go learn more about Javascript if you need to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Must have it excellent book. I also recomend CSS Mastery. Great books for library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise
DOM Scripting by Jeremy Keith gives you a very smooth introduction to JavaScript and the DOM. The books is more directed at those who are just beginning JavaScript or have used it in the past but would like more knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Awesome, really!
I am a business consultant that works with Microsoft, HP, Oracle, HP, Xerox etc. and teaches how to conduct sales presentations to CXOs for a living. I cansay that this book has taken the look, feel and ease of creating a first class executive level business case to a level I could have not imagined. At first it is quite daunting and overwhelming. But I had to get some business cases together for 50 marketing professionals in Sydney on a special workshop and I crashed into it.The MODD system once you "get it" is easy, fast and addictive. I ripped through Excel, PowerPoint and Word integrated data and information in no time flat with the MODD tools. It scared me it worked so well. This stuff is like awesome and it is refreshing to actually see a program work without a hitch. ( I wonder how they did that?)Krieger has made me look really, really good. Go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great integration of programs, Excellent CD
I have trained over 3,000 people in Microsoft Word. None of them had ever heard of or used styles. Styles are necessary if you're going to use Word correctly. So, I bought this book for two reasons. First, I find that a woman writes a better book about learning software. I think women authors seem to explain software in better detail, especially for beginners. Second, the back cover describes a CD that has "Dozens of professional designs and layouts." I like examples for learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful for Creating Documents + Great Tools
This book is like having an assistant to help with my documents. I create a lot of my own documents at work, and they have to look good. The book is a true help with that, not to mention the tools that come with the book. And, I can't believe how many how-to articles and tip sheets come along with the tools on the CD. Those articles are so great for quick and practical answers to the whatever I need to get done - I use them all the time.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book of minimal value
What a disappointment! The book deals with a key element of software development but unfortunately lets the reader down in so many ways! While the topics covered should have been useful, I suspect that the most common word in the book was "I" - as the author regales the use with instances where his apparently superior and hothouse intellect saved the day. Instead, a concise but generalised explanation would have done and been illustrative.
3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Information But Hard To Follow
I agree with the reviewers who complain about the lack of full source code (either in the book or on the Web for me to download), as a C# programmer I found it very difficult to follow the changes he was making from the small densely packed Java snippets.
1-0 out of 5 stars Really important topic, disappointing treatment of it
There seems to be a common misconception that Refactoring and Patterns are disconnected things. I had high hopes that this would be the book that cleared this misconception and tied them together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I've gotten about 6 chapters into this book and I love it.I've been developing Java for almost 7 years and am currently teaching myself Agile principles and this book comes as a great help.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it!
I'm not a beginning programmer, or even an absolute Java novice, so maybe this book isn't really aimed at me.My biggest gripe is that the code snippets continue on and on making the book very poor for anything other than cover-to-cover reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
This book is a fantastic primer to not only the java language, but to agile methods and junit as well. The author does a great job of introducing many concepts in a way that is easy to digest without being slow. However, seasoned java programmers may get frustrated with the early chapters that speak to basic java while introducing the bread and butter of junit. This is only for the first 150 pages or so.The information and lessons on refactoring, best practices, and junit are well worth it though. The best part of the book is the author's style. He does not speak down to the reader with overly high vocabulary, or with an "I am all knowing" attitude, but rather he uses a conversational tone with an emphasis on making the topic clear concise and to the point. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to shaders
This is a well written book covering the Cg shading language. It contains a lot of useful information about Cg and graphics programming techniques in general. Unfortunately, I felt like it didn't cover as much of Cg as I would have liked, making the book less useful than it could have been.3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Cg
My review here is from an experienced OpenGL programmer's perspective. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, not very thorough.
This book is very good to get yourself started with Cg, but lacks technical details and advanced topics. Once you're on your way coding shaders, you're better off with NVidia's free cg_toolkit.pdf which is included with the Cg SDK. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.
4-0 out of 5 stars Written by somebody who knows what he is talking about
Basics of .net framework is presented in aclear and lucid style. This book is a joy to read and .by the way there is not much difference in content wise between applied .Net framework programming and this book. My only worry is the speed at which microsoft is pushing .net versions as if there is no tommorrow! [Subsequently the catch up I have to do on reading all this!]

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY a book geared at the experienced developer...
If you need to do more than just write sample code for tutorials, then this is the book for you. It provides valuable coverage of the ASP.NET landscape. I learned things about web services I never knew I could do with .NET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Python made painless
I've read a lot of books that promise to make acquiring a new programming language easy. Most don't. "Beginning Python," however, does.
5-0 out of 5 stars beginning python
i've never reviewed a book before but after studying python with this book, i had to.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reading
Still reading it though, it's a simple read. Small, simpleexamples and easy reading motivates any reader for further reading, exploring the language. Though I'm sure the 10 projects in the last chapters are very eductional, I think the author should've spent more time with "Files and stuff" and GUI-programming. Maybe, removing a couple of the projects would give more space and foundation in the areas mentioned? (Where's the pickle, Magnus?) Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the Python language. ... Read more
