5-0 out of 5 stars A very very useful book
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex".That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice detailed explanation
For the advanced Latex user, this book will enhance your documents to professional looking documents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dissertation Salvation
I am not a LaTeX newbie. I have used various LaTeX implementations for several years over the course of my graduate student career. Nevertheless, most of my LaTeX experience was with simpler more forgiving projects. Those projects\textemdash and my frustrations with Word instability during the development of several grant proposals\textemdash (joke) were what encouraged me to tackle my dissertation using LaTeX.
2-0 out of 5 stars not practical, incomplete
I give it 2 stars, because it means "I don't like it" according to Amazon's rating system. I tried to "quickly" figure out how to change margins in a document. It turned out to be much more easier to do it with Google! So, OK, this is not a recipes book. It runs pages and pages, though. if you can stand it, you can find it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I have purchased more than five books about Latex. Even though I have not read all the chapters in this book, I think this book will be on my desk along with Lamport's book when I write papers in Latex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Into LaTeX
A very nice intro book for those of you out there trying to put your write ups in Latex. This book has a good way of explaining things like how you can tackle the writing. I am really happy using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must!
To review this book you don't need a lot of words: it is simply a must. Nobody interested in publishing articles on maths can live without this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars great product condition poor customer service
I have no quarrel with the product but their customer service needs some work.I had to contact them three times, and when I got a response, it was a sarcastic one.I never received a shipment notice and when I asked for a shipping date and a tracking number (if there was one), no response; I wanted to check US Postal. It was as if I was simply being ignored. Once again my item was great and better than expected. It was the customer service that knocked it down to four stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of art, magnificent, but not for beginners
This is a beautiful book, and a true testament to the power of LaTeX.It is also a great book for serious users of LaTeX, and probably as close to a 'must have' as there is.However, I would say that it should NOT be the first book you buy on LaTeX.This isn't meant as a criticism (note the 5 stars) but simply to point out that this book assumes knowledge.Once you've gotten your feet wet, and can do some basic things in LaTeX, you will almost certainly want to buy this book, as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bible for LaTeX
This book is a "must have" for any LaTeX enthusiast. It's well worth the price.I recommend that first edition users upgrade to this one.The second edition packs a lot more material than the first edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Latex resources
I have tried reading a lot of online articles about learning Latex, and none of them was very helpful. After reading this book for 1 hour, I started creating my own document (which had a pressing deadline). Do buy this book if you are beginner in Latex: the treatment is lucid, helpful and easy-to-read. 95% needs of 90% Latex users will be served by the commands given in this small 60 page book. If you have more advanced needs, this book gives excellent referencs to other, more reference-like Latex books. Oh, and if you are a Windows user, I'd strongly recomment (MikTeX + TeXnicCenter) as your Latex software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Although some may consider this book to be awfully expensive for the few pages that it has, it is indeed worth the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Examples, quite incomplete
Many times in this book I've seen exactly what I want to do, but the LaTeX code is not always shown.I use this book as a hint to what can be done, and then I search on the web for LaTeX examples.I am fairly disappointed, and often find myself more frustrated after reading a section than I was before.4-0 out of 5 stars Like the JC Penny catalogue:a wish book
I would have to hazard a guess that this is probably the most advanced LaTeX book on the market. It is lots of fun to look at with its many esoteric uses of LaTeX--typesetting bridge or chess game diagrams, musicnotation, optical illusions--in other words, stuff that I wish had enoughtime to learn but probably never will. However, I do find myself lookingat this book more than I initially imagined because it is quite useful onsubjects such as fonts and the "dvips" program. For these areas, you'll definitely find things to learn and use even if you aren't evergoing to typeset Mozart's lost symphony or fiddle with EncapsulatedPost-Script code at the primitive command level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
Nicely crafted guidebook to the graphics and fonts. PSTricks, color, chess, chemistry and music - helps you to typeset all of it, and more. My only complain is that the chapter on fonts is vague at places - because thebook tries to be so encyclopedic, I guess ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good both for beginners and for advanced users.
This is an updated tutorial and also a very good reference manual.3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good advertisement for LaTeX

5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to learn LaTeX.Not an exhaustive reference
If you are a LaTeX beginner and need to learn the basics, this is probably the best way to do it.Please disregard the low scores given to this book by other reviewers who were disappinted by the level of detail.(Since I am an author of an introductory book myself, this sort of thoughtless on the part of those reviewers really irritates me.A book isn't a bad book just because you didn't read the book description and you thought it was going to be about something else.)The book has a specific purpose, as an introduction and a reference for the base LaTeX packages. It's only 288 pages (compare to The LaTeX Companion at 1120 pages, or Guide to LaTeX at 624 pages). The reference section it has is a reference for the base LaTeX software, not all of the hundreds of packages that have been written for it since 1994 when the book was published.I give it a five star rating for the purpose it was written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Use of LaTeX
I started using LaTeX (and TeX) over 15 years ago. I was dissatisfied with the way that Word handled equations (it didn't then) and sought software that would typeset my technical text and mathematics well. A friend and colleague introduced me to LaTeX. I bought a copy of Lamport's book, a PC port of the software, and started using LaTeX to set my work.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing purchase
Seems to be an okay resource for people just getting started. However it is completely inadequate as a reference. Better resources are available on the internet for free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginner's book
In the TeX/LaTeX universe, I've found that you get the program for free, but then you wind up buying $200 worth of books to learn the program because no one textbook is all things to all people. This is hands downthe best "introductory book."It's easy to read and gives youenough information to start up quickly.Hahn's book is outdated with itscoverage of Latex 2.09, and Kopka's, while having lots of good stuff in it(if you can find it), reads like a scientific text translated from aforeign language--which it is.4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written but missing many things
This book is well written and is great for anyone trying to put together reports and simple documents with no frills (base fonts and formatting). It does not cover font selection (NFSS), customization, and many otherimportant things for advanced documents, like a book. If you need a muchmore comprehensive book for LaTeX I would recommend Kopka's book. The bookis structured in a very confusing and sometimes illogical manner, but itcovers much more. This book is much more efficient, but you may findyourself needing more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Single Best Book on LaTeX available!
I've recently been through most of the beginning to intermediate LaTeX books and have found the bulk of them almost worthless in helping to learn and use LaTeX. This book is extremely readable and useful with correctsyntax. The focus is unapologetically LaTeX2e and is not encumbered withoutdated 2.09 commands. This is hands down the one book I would buy if Iwere only going to buy one. After this I would recommend Kopka, though thatis much less well presented but definitely the next best (it is loaded withsuperfluous 2.09 command comparisons which just get in the way of gettingthrough the book). It is way down hill after that, including Lamport's book(beautifully typeset but not clearly written). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book...get "Math into Latex" instead
This is basically just a subset of Gratzer's larger book. Not to say this book isn't good, but it's worth spending a few extra dollars to get the complete book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
I found LaTeX produces documents with a quality that is at least an order of magnitude greater than MS Word. This book gave me a fine start and helped in discovering that realization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speed is gold
For those who want to become productive with LaTex without wasting lots time reading irrelevant information, this book gets you to do just that. I have used quite a few Tex references over the years, Hahn's book is the one that I go back to time after time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A non-programmers guide to a poweful program.
Like most of the programs attached to the Unix environment this book takes the reader into a powerful and complex application. The benefit of this volume is that the reader is given the chance to learn just what the task at hand needs. By allowing the novice to learn what needs to be done in the beginning, the book provides powerful methods for success. In giving the reader a balence of easy to use concepts backed by concise reference material almost any level of skill can be accomodated. Over all this work is an excellent blend of concept and reference. For the beginner as well as the experienced Tex user, this book should be on the "must read" list. As a reference it is ample for even the most experienced user. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date, not very useful
This book dates back to 1999, and since I'm writing this in 2006, that's seven years ago. Seven years is a long time for computer documentation. Virtually everything in the book is so far out of date that it's useless. The authors also didn't do a very good job of staying on topic; there are many long digressions that are neither interesting nor useful. In many cases, the authors merely give a broad-strokes outline of how to accomplish a particular task, or talk about several different approaches that have been taken by different people, without concluding with anything very helpful about how to actually accomplish the task.

5-0 out of 5 stars very handy
I am an user of latex on linux for sometime now. The possibillities are uncountable with this excellent software. This book touches on the use of tex and latex for the web. Being not that experienced with all the possibillities this book is very usefull. It is a good introduction for converting latex and tex files to documents for the web. If you can grasp all the stuff in this book you will be able to easily prepare all kinds of documents for the web and in the end save a lot of time lost with programming html yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars Almost definitely recommended
I have found this book almost as useful and interesting as the LaTeX Companion. I think that it gives enough information about sharing TeX and LaTeX texts on the web, but the chapters covering pdfTeX and SGML/XMLapplications could be more detailed.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of ground for the novice but...
... users with some experience with this package will find it next to impossible to use as a reference. Bits and pieces on a topic are often scattered throughout the book. This works if you read it from beginning to end as it builds up in sophistication. On the other hand, it makes it difficult to find answers when you need to look something up. The book description is entirely accurate: an "introduction and guide to using LaTeX". The book also has some coverage of the various utilities one needs to make effective use of LaTeX (it would have saved me some time if I had it when I got started). The physical layout of the book may come as a bit of a shock (it initally struck me as uneven and unprofessional), but now that I look at it a few years later I realize this was largely due to the fact that there are a lot of examples of the output produced by the various examples (the whole point is to show you how to do things instead of selecting examples that won't interfere with the look and feel of the layout). The negative reviews this book has received are unfair since they were written by people who wanted an advanced book and bought this one ignoring its description (it quite simply isn't reasonable to say that Hondas are useless just because you're in the market for an exotic sports car). Those looking for more advanced books should consider the three "LaTeX Companion" books by Goosens and friends (these books are suitable for use as reference). The truly advanced user should have a look at "TeX Unbound" (not specific to LaTeX, but extremely useful once you are capable of reading and absorbing its contents). For the novice, I would recommend the Lamport book in addition to this one: it is thin, easy to carry around, and does a fantastic job presenting concepts (doesn't cover nearly as much ground as this book, but does a much, much better job at what it does cover).

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Latex
Being a beginner at Latex I began reading with the thought5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to LaTeX I've seen
This is still the best introductory text for LaTeX that I've seen. The Linux Journal review got it exactly right -- this book takes the the mystery and complexity out of LaTex while still tackling many advanced aspects of the language. It uses good examples and is actually formatted using LaTeX.As such it provides a strong visual argument for the power of LaTeX and the value of learning it.This is a great book for doing exactly that. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing LaTeX Primer
This is a nice book for LaTeX beginners to get up to speed. Consider this an updated The LaTeX Companion, but with less coverage on different packages and written in a more tutorial-like style. Like all new books about technology, it has the advantage of being able to cover recent developments like Prosper (a package for preparing slides) and Omega (multilingual capable TeX).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don'tTypeset Without It
Lots of details on how to tweak LaTeX.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book of hints and tips
I bought this book in 1996 when I entered graduate school and have utilised it as a reference while writing all my research papers as well as my dissertation. I also have "The LaTeX Companion" by Goossens et al., but this book is much more useful to me. At about 170 pages, it crams everything you need into a very short amount of space, including info on fonts, tables, math, formatting, etc. The chapter on large documents was invaluable to me when I was preparing my dissertation. Furthermore, the last chapter has a number of cool macros that have come in pretty handy.5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Latex
This is the first and only book I read to get me started using Latex to work on my thesis. The book covers just the right amount of depth to get one started on using Latex for technical writing, without getting into other details that might put off a new user.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MetaPost fans will *love* Chapter 13!
Alan Hoenig's book is a real tour-de-force when it comes to discussing TeX's arcane font-handling. If you want to learn how to install fonts for use with TeX, this is the book for you. Virtual fonts, PostScript fonts, MetaFont +... they're all covered. Want to mix-and-match new maths typefaces -- you'll find nearly 30 pages of examples (the "Rogues' Gallery").4-0 out of 5 stars Best discussion on TeX/LaTeX and fonts yet
I'll agree that this book is a bit of a hodgepodge of issues on the TeX/LaTeX typesetting systems. One of the various topics covered, however, and as I recall it's also the most extensive part, is a comprehensivediscussion on one of the most arcane of all TeX issues, that of fonts. Evenafter many years of experience as a fairly advanced end user, I realized, while reading that book, that there were, to my shame, countless details Ihad up-to-now failed to _really_ understand. The discussion on the use andinstallation of type-1 fonts alone, to my mind, is well worth theprice.4-0 out of 5 stars Is it a beginner's book?Is it an advanced text? I dunno.
I'll admit I'm just a LaTeX junkie who doesn't have a lot of time for plain TeX commands.I picked up this book because it looked as though it had some LaTeX stuff on fonts in it, and I was bored.Once again, I hadrecently skimmed my way through Knuth's "TeX Book" in yet anotherill-fated effort to motivate myself to learn some plain TeX commands.("\hsize" in TeX, "\hspace" in LaTeX--oh, I'll justconfuse myself.) The short Appendix in this book (for which Hoenig is waytoo apologetic) which starts the reader out on TeX was much more fun toread, and I immediately sat down, picked up Knuth's bible to use as areference, and re-coded some of my LaTeX documents into plain TeX, all thewhile muttering, "This isn't too onerous.Hmmmm, maybe in a couple ofweeks I'll write my own TeX style set."The LaTeX Appendix is lesssuccessful as a primer, but that's okay because you aren't really buyingthis book for the appendicies.Or are you?The rest of the work dealswith advanced topics regarding fonts and graphics and is set forth in lucidfashion with a good and concrete discussion of the NFSS.(Why is it thatmost of these TeX/LaTeX books are so vague and nebulous concerning fonts? This book proves that you can concisely write about TeX fonts withoutforcing the reader to read between the lines or piece together nuggets ofwisdom from multiple sources.)Read more
