5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for System Administrators
Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It's inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, full of examples, for all UNIX/Linux/BSD users
At first glance, this book seems like a typical O'Reilly book: a narrow title, rich in material, and is beneficial to a much wider audience than the title reveals. It covers a wide range of system administration subjects and goes way beyond just the essentials.
5-0 out of 5 stars Want to understand Unix and not just use it? This is the book.
This book is for the reader that wants to move beyond the basic, high level overview Unix book and truly understand the Unix system and why it invokes passion from it's fan base. This book could be used by the beginning user, but the novice or casual reader may find this book overwhelming in the sheer level of information it provides. If you are a system administrator, you will find this book is THE book you refer to the most, to the point you may end up keeping this book close to your Unix system at all times. Don't let the 2002 publication date think the book is out of date. The book covers the information that any system administrator will need, which do not change as frequently as the applications that run over the operating system. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Miserable dictionary of doublespeak
Not recommended for native speakers of the English language.
5-0 out of 5 stars The overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more
Joe Richards, Robbie Allen and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris' Active Directory, 3rd Edition is also for Windows administrators who may know all to well about the problems it's brought to prior versions of windows. This edition considers the Directory for Windows 2000, 2003 and its updates, considering the overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more. Yes, you can use Microsoft's documentation for many similar answers; but here they are arranged in a more logical manner and provide more candid assessments to help users upgrade or understand options.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless if you intend to write software
I bought this book hoping that it would explain how LDAP works. Basicaly this book tells you how to set up a server and let other tools use it as they see fit.
4-0 out of 5 stars LDAP System Administration review
This book provides a good introduction to implementing OpenLDAP.I found the authors "jumped" tangentially around quite a bit topically, rather than following an idea from start to finish. It was a bit disconcerting following the examples and being interrupted with background material constantly. This may be an editorial problem, as usually backreferences to material are enclosed in callout boxes, while the topical flow continues.3-0 out of 5 stars LDAP Administration for UNIX
It covers LDAP installation and implementation (using OpenLDAP) for various services on UNIX platform, i.e. NIS, Email, Clients and Mail Transfer Agents (MTA), FTP and Web servers, Samba, FreeRadius, DNS, and Printer Management. A quick introduction on how to implement LDAP server for various services in your organisation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book about Postfix
I wasn't looking for esoteric information on how to administer Sendmail. I was looking for a book on Postfix and that's what the author provided. I got the book based a lot on the quality of O'Reilly books and the editor's reputation. Andy Oram is a top notch editor. I recommend this book to any Linux or UNIX person wanting to substitute Postfix for sendmail. Postfix is a drop in replacement for systems configured for sendmail but Postfix is not a monlithic program with lots of vulnerabilities. The author expalins that perfectly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide on setting up a Postfix mail server, then this isn't the book for you.For those that are already familiar with setting up MTAs, the information provided in "The Definitive Guide" is probably enough, but this book only covers a subset of the Postfix configuration parameters and does not provide the step-by-step instructions that many people may be expecting. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars If you condensed the book to 100 pages it may be worth reading
There is some very valuable information in this book. However I think the book is waaaaay to lengthy. If it was condensed to about 10% of its length (by throwing away all the crap) I would have given it 4 stars. There is definetly a lot of information that I had to dig out elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
Great book, exactly what I needed. I'm pretty good with Sendmail, but there is nothing like just looking up an issue and following through a solution. I would recommend this to anyone who works with Sendmail!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has something about sendmail for everyone
This book has something about sendmail for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who administers sendmail
Working with sendmail can be very challenging at times; while the documentation for it is very complete, finding real-life use-cases can be tough and messing up a configuration is very easy. Fortunately the sendmail authors and community adopted the m4 language to help make building and managing sendmail configurations less painful (I remember having bad dreams about sendmail configuration language when I started learning it). Even with m4, understanding what goes where when and why in a sendmail configuration file can be a real challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars No other OS X server book comes close
Even with 10.4 out this is still the number one book on Mac OS X server there is. Period. Bartosh goes deep in to all areas of OS X server and provides excellent examples for you to follow. This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration.
This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best MacOS X Server book
For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth gold
I can just say thanks to author for writing this book. If we have more books like this we wouldn't have so much frustration in everyday life. The book title might confuse the people about content and use of the book. But I would say that this book is for everyone who wants to know how e-mail works. If you are not programmer than just skip the code and read everything in between. The book is so good that even without that code part it would be still complete and excellent guide how e-mail works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of how email works.
I bought this because I wanted to understand how email gets routed around the internet using DNS. This book accomplished that. I found this book slightly better than David Wood's "Programming Internet Email" due to its coverage of DNS. However I'm glad I own both books.
2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial treatment
If you want to write a simple program that generates legal mail, then this might do the trick, but if you need to handle anything that is compliant with RFC821 or RFC822 or MIME, then you will be out of luck. You would be much better off with Internet Email Protocols: A Developers Guide by Kevin Johnson.See http://tinyurl.com/yvgra ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really usefull!!
I've been thinking about deploying LDAP in the Solaris Environment and last year I bought a previous version of this book (ASIN: 0130306789 ), but it was really a disappointing experience. The book was telling mostly about what LDAP is, but not much about how to use it in Solaris.

2-0 out of 5 stars I guess I'm missing it too.
I was looking for a book that would tie together the bits and pieces of LDAP knowledge that I had gathered from the internet for a thorough overview of LDAP.But after reading this book, I still don't have a clear understanding of basic concepts such as namespaces. One section led me to believe that a DNS-based namespace was the same as an LDAP hierarchical namespace, but then I had my doubts after reading another section. Are cn, ou, dc, and uid all object classes?I have heard that LDAP does not respond to a client with a pass/fail response, but there is a discussion of result codes in response to such operations. What are theses codes? When and how are they issued?Walk the reader through from beginning to end with an example of connecting to an LDAP server with a query or an authentication request and show the messages that are passed back to the client (if any).In a discussion of public key encryption, the author states: "the public key is published for anyone to know, whereas the private key is kept secret from everyone but the user....it doesn't matter who knows your public key, because the public key can't be used to impersonate you."Please explain this apparent paradox; if I need the public key to decrypt your message, and anyone can have the public key, then how is the data secure?Couldn't anyone tapping into our communication decrypt it if they have the public key too?Including some actual PERL, or JSP, or VB.NET with ASP.NET scripts for connecting to and querying an LDAP server would have been a plus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to LDAP
Suppose you were an administrator who is asked to run an LDAP-Server, but the only thing you know about LDAP is, that it is a fashionable IT-buzzword. Then this book is for you! If your task is to create a directory infrastructure for a whole company or organization, "LDAP Directories Explained" could be a perfect first read, but after it you will want to turn to a more comprehensive book. This book also does not claim to contain installation guides for any specific LDAP server implementation (though it has some links on this topic in one of its appendixes).
2-0 out of 5 stars Am I missing something?
Perhaps I just bought the wrong book for what I wanted to do, or maybe I just don't get it, but in either case, this book left me very underwhelmed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Linux/Windows Integration Reference
This book did not favor any one Linux OS over another (good). Most Linux configuration was via commandline (which most will advocate in a Unix environment) and direct editing of conf files. Each chapter has a great balance of common practices, breaking down the common config parameters, then implementing.Overall, a great reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars NetBIOS? I say again NetBIOS?!?
Working several years as a certified Windows Administrator, I find it strange to have a complete chapter soley dedicated to the topic of NetBIOS.Who uses NetBIOS?I looked further into the book, and the all SAMBA material seems to be a rehash older and overdocumented SAMBA 2.0 docs...
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book on the topic. The author knows what he is talking about, he doesn't skip anything and explains almost everything that should be explained. Although there are some typos and small errors in the book, they are corrected in the errata. Accessible, thorough, well written, well organized, well supported. Definitely worth the money. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars useless; try the O'reilly LDAP System Administration
check out page 67 of the book for a basic reason why this book is useless: 1-0 out of 5 stars A book should be written with lots of sweat
This is a book produced by merging numerous publicly available materials without too much input from the author. The author seems at a loss what to say when the good stuff is already said by others (other than changing "does not" to "doesn't", etc). Here're some suggestions, in case he plans to write a new edition. For instance, p.77, the first two search filter examples are too easy. But the third one needs a few seconds' thinking. Why not keep building progressively more complicated filters? They would be guaranteed not to be in existing materials. p.144, ACI parameter realm suddenly appears. This "realm" sounds different from that in SASL (p.98 and p.115). But "realm" is never explained anywhere in the book. There're other terms that mean differently but are not explained, such as NSS (p.136 for "Network Security Services" and p.249 for "Name Service Switch"). There're other places in the book that mention something only explained in later chapters, but they're not warned with "We'll explain this in Chapter XXX". The reason is simply that he copies a man page or somebody's article without thinking of adding anything to it. Arrangement of the text is sometimes unexpected. After about 20 pages of Perl methods copied from documentation, p.164 suddenly shows a program in C, not Perl.
1-0 out of 5 stars virtually useless
I was looking for a good treatment of not just what decisions need to be made (I knew those already) but realworld examples I could build on.
