4-0 out of 5 stars good but soon to be outdated
Everything you need to know about v.1.3, but with Apache 2.0 just around the corner (currently in beta), you might want to hold off until the 2nd edition. This edition touches very briefly on 2.0, providing a general overview of what to expect, but no meat.A lot remains the same, but some critical things are different, and clear documentation of the kind that this book provides for 1.3 is scant.Hopefully something will come out before too long fill the void.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but should have been better
There is a lot of good information contained in this book just waiting to get out.Unfortunately, the poor chapter organisation and the abyssmal index makes finding the information you need (or trying to find it later) a frustrating experience. There's also a lot of padding with CGI and PHP scripts that didn't seem to serve any purpose unless you really wanted to learn how to program 'hello world'. Overall, it will teach you the gist of administrating an Apache Web Server, but I found it disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Apache book I've found
Excellent instructions, and an amazing companion to the O' Reiley book. Takes the guesswork out of Linux Apache admin, and is a handy tool for any other Unix folks as well.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Scarily Inaccurate
I don't know anything about the subject matter covered in the later chapters, but the Perl that the authors demonstrate in chapters 3 to 7 is some of the most badly written and buggy Perl that I have ever seen. Many of the example programs won't even compile as they have typos in them that would have been caught if the book had been given the most cursory glance by a technical editor. I searched the IDG (sorry, 'Hungry Minds') web site to see what errata had been made available, but there didn't seem to be any.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf is an excellent valued reference tool for programmers wanting to develop software in an open source web environment. Not only does it contain the full text for six of O'Reilly's best sellers on open source web development, a search engine for each book, and a master index, but also it has a number of relevant articles that have posted to the O'Reilly Network. It has a easy to read web-browser interface.5-0 out of 5 stars Linux web server CD bookshelf
Just as the Web Programmers CD bookshelf that I had the opportunity to read, the searching abilities of the cd bookshelves are excellent. Being able to search a certain topic across 6 books at once makes searching for quick answers easily accomplished. Being able to buy 6 books on a single cd also helps to save money while at the same time helps to build your own library of in depth books. The combination of books included in the Linux web server cd bookshelf has enough detailed information to help teach you the ins and outs of running an Apache web server on a Linux platform. Also the Programming PHP and the Managing & Using MySQL books should help you make full use of your Linux web server and understand the flexibility of what can be done.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to LAMP servers for average computer user
The focus in this book is on one of the most common implementations of Linux; as a complete Internet solution with a Linux server, Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP language. This combination is commonly called a LAMP installation. The authors lead the reader through how to pick an appropriate Linux distribution for your needs, install and configure the Apache web server, use MySQL to store data and use PHP to build Web applications.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good broad strokes, light on details
I'm a web developer and bought this book hoping that it would--as advertised--teach me how to setup and install a working LAMP server. I found this book to read more like a checklist than anything.Install this, uncheck that. The book provided little insight as to the reasoning behind these decisions, nor did it provide any detail on how to fine tune or configure some of the more arcane components like email or ftp.It definitely did not teach you anything about how to live and operate in the Linux environment. These I had to figure out on my own. This book reads like a free website article repackaged and bound.Stay clear of this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars a non-technical book for non-technical people
50% of its contents can be found in a general Red Hat Linux book. Most other parts can be found in the web sites of Apache, Webmin and so on. This is the worst book I bought from Amazon.com, the first book from Sitepoint. I wouldn't buy a book from Sitepoint for a long time. I feel sorry for my company which paid for the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf gave me everything I needed right at my finger tips. If there was only one major reason that you should buy this Bookshelf it would be the search capabilities alone. This Bookshelf comes with the ability to search all 6 books at once for any subject you want. This was the first type of CD Bookshelf that I have ordered. If it is possible I will only buy CD Bookshelves from now on. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference
Putting aside the CD-Roms, the alpha layout of the book itself is wonderful and just what I was looking for. Very concise and and again the book itself is worth the money. It is made to be used as a resource and a reference.I wish other books were laid out this way. After spending hrs and hrs looking thru books I finally found my first choice. ... This book only gives rudimentary coverage of MySQL or Apache.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Level
I just finished reading Professional LAMP. These four components make for quite a powerful open source solution. It is being used at the enterprise level, with companies such as Yahoo and Google taking advantage of the flexibility if can offer. This book is ideal for anyone wanting to delve further into this development environment. As far as I know, it is the first book to cover LAMP at the professional level. The full listing of chapter topics covered are as follows:
4-0 out of 5 stars Could be of interest to the right audience...
If you don't know (in which case you wouldn't be reading this in all likelihood), LAMP is an acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP5.It's the open source "software stack" used to do web development. If you have a basic grounding in all those software elements, you might be interested in the Wrox book Professional LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP5 Web Development by Jason Gerner, Elizabeth Naramore, Morgan L. Owens, Matt Warden.

3-0 out of 5 stars Learning Curve - Too Unfocused
Chapters 1-6 did not contain enough examples to get into thr mindset of the book. In particular, I would have like information better leading into the heart of the book in Chapter 8 and beyond.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to our readers & web site
Hello, Everyone. First, we thank all of you for the generally positive comments about our book. We worked hard to bring you a book of high quality and are still alive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best kept secret in web programming
Talk about a sleeper! This book may be one of the best kept secrets in the world of Web programming books. It could be described as Web programming with Python and Open Source tools. In the hands of most authors, this much breadth would produce a multi-volume set of books complete with material that could readily be found elsewhere. The reader is fortunate that it was written and edited by educators who know how to present the pertinent and relevant details of the OS, the Shell, the Python language, Apache, SQL. Lesser books give you the world but require the reader to determine what is relevant and how to use the features described. The manuscript is original and efficient; definitely not a regurgitation of material available on the Web. The advanced sections pertaining to the development of an application server are rich with good programming methodologies. However, some chapters may be exceedingly routine for intermediate and/or advanced server-side programmers. The book could be described as a "LAMP" developer guide for novices (where the P stands for Python not Perl).

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice way to upgrade java job skills
A nice description of how to install various server side Java applications on a linux box. The narrative is straightforward to follow, and does not involve much previous acquaintance with linux. It does help, however, to know some Java, going into this book, which does not attempt to teach it, per se.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars this is only a walk-through, not really a content based book
This is not a detailed narrative or technical language book. I was expecting a more detailed technical explaination of the topic, but instead i was faced to extensive examples that made no sense to help with learning. The book uses examples that were not well introduced, such as the network topology of the examples, server names, etc... there is no reference or apendix that remembers what is the topology of each example, so if you cannot use the book as just a reference as you lose track of what the examples are about. For this type of topic a more graphic book is important. To conclude, I believe the book has some good content but it was poorly structured and written, so it vanishes among its pages. I gave up of trying to learn from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is there any page without an error?????
The book is good, but like I said before is there any page without an error????? There is no published errata for the book too!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Technical Errors Found
I like the book's "get right to work" attitude, providing code that implements configurations that are not academic, but actually useful. But, once a book as adopted this philosophy, I expect that they provide correct code, or else the value significantly is diminished.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to start... bad for mantainance
It helped to get the box up, but increasing needs like Virtual Domains, some everyday tasks, and hardware configuration are not mentioned here. The CD is good though. You need to know a bit of linux first (background). I'mnot sure.. but there are more complete books on Linux Internet set-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent guide not only for a LINUXbut for any OS site dev
A not surprising excelent book, because the well known experience of theautor. It is a practical guide, well exposed and documented, about how toinstall an internet site using a LINUX OS. No way to be lost. Recomendations and techniques are also well applied when developing websytes in other related OS systems. It also includeas all you may need toinstall it on your own, including the LINUX system.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent "get up and running NOW" book
This book covers the basics needed to install and maintain a Linux internet site. This is an excellent reference book for those who want to use linux to it's fullest. However, this book is not for the beginner. In fact, unless you have a strong computer background and have some experience on a unix/linux shell then you might be lost. There is a lot of information not included in this book, for example all the software (most of which is free) that is available. I would recommend this book to anyone with the appropiate computer background that wants to begin setting up their own internet site/ISP. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another rushed title to milk more out of the Linux bandwagon
If you have more than 10 minutes Net experience and say, ooh, 3 minutes of coding html you can skip the first 200 or so pages. If you have a couple of days of Linux under your belt, you'll find that most of the remainingcontent can be found in the relevant man pages.1-0 out of 5 stars Really Suck!
Suck! Yes it was really suck.If you want step by step instructions, you are better off buying other book. The CD-ROM was really really lousy because they have so little driver listing. I have installed RedHat Linux before, and it worked great with all softwaredrivers available in their presented option (I tested this Caldera versionbecause it offered 500MB disk space rather than 2Gbyte like RedHat.)Ihave all brandname hardware device and yet this Caldera does not havesoftware driver for me to install. Ex: SoundBlaster from Creative Lab, nowthis is the basic standard sound card. How could this Caldera not supportdriver for this? see what I mean. So, If you got no name brand, you are indeep yogurt!I don't have money to throw away; so, I am really regrettingbuying this book. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
