5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those 'senior moments'
This is my carry-around, cheat-sheet, security-blanket, reminder book... when I get busy with customers crying about load averages, reports to acknowledge, system emails to pour through (I know, there are scripts for that!..), and troubleshooting to do, sometimes I just cannot get my brain to sort my "all things Linux" database to find what I need (was it a -R or -r with chown??)Maybe it's an age thing, or a vitamin thing, but this little book is my start-with book. It's easy to flip thru and find that little crumb you are looking for to get going again. And by all means, it is not a Linux in a Nutshell, or other more comprehensive reference book, but certainly for quickie RH-specific double-checks, it's perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, easy to use reference
This is not my only Linux reference, but it's the one I'm finding it easy to use quickly when all I need is some specific piece of information to get something done.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Win Admins wanting to learn Linux
This was one of the first books I picked up when I decided to take the plunge into Linux.Being an MCSE and Windows administrator, I drastically improved my understanding of how Linux is similar, and differs from Windows. If you're a Windows guy or gal who wants to make sense of Linux, I highly recommend you pick up this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Coming from Windoze...
...this is a great start/introduction.The "Dummies" and "Visually" books were too simple for my needs but this one explained everything from an NT standpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I normally don't write reviews, but this book was the best Linux book for beginners that I've ever read.Dont let the cheesy title fool you.I'm well past the beginner level at this point, but this is the book that started me off.I would highly recommend this book for someone trying to learn Linux. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The history of the development of Linux in detail
The book is mainly based on the information collected by the author from various people via e-mail, telephone or personal communication between September 1999 and September 2000, and the interview with Linus Torvalds at a critical juncture in his life, in December 1996, as well as other interviews with key players from the last three years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
The book gives a complete history of open source development starting from the earlier days of RMS and Linus. The strong point of the book is that the depth of coverage on open source history is unmatchable. My most favourite chapters are the ones that describe the early development of Linux and the history of Perl. 5-0 out of 5 stars For My Hubby

5-0 out of 5 stars How a robot should be built.
I have this book and it has more than enough information to build a very capable robot that makes most of those that you can buy a toy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Robotics, Not so much on Linux
Building Robots has become a fascination to a lot of people, including Mr. Newman, the author of this book. His robots are a long ways from C3PO. He basically build a robot mounted on wheels that has an awful lot of electronics. But then again he is including a lot of features in his design.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a how-to book on "Linux Robotics".
I've been looking forward to Mr. Newman's book since his postings earlier last year on a robotics forum. I find the subject of incorporating a mini-itx computer with the Linux operating system into robots fascinating and I want to do the same. From this book, I understand he has working robots using this configuration. I'm sure I could learn a lot from Mr. Newman on this subject. I wish this book had provided insight into the pitfalls, tricks and details that a Microsoft Windows user could benefit from to accomplish his same results with Linux. I feel this book falls too short on the Linux content as implied by the book's current title. This would otherwise be a good book if it were renamed.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I think
It is a very good book! I suggest it to everybody want to learn C++
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book for Rapid Learning of C++
This book is for the programmer who comes from a different programming background and wants to become a professional C++ engineer. This book takes you through a structured education in the C++ programming language which you will be able to program in after reading through just the first half of the book.1-0 out of 5 stars Unforgivably lame
While this book *was* helpful to me as a reference, I could never, ever recommend this book to anyone, least of all beginners. It is horribly inaccurate - he even claims that the NULL macro may be used as the 'null'termination character - and then complains that many compilers don'tproperly allow that without giving errors! (NULL is only for the use ofnull pointers). There are numerous cases where his lack of understandingin certain areas could lead beginning programmers down very bad codingpaths, causing buggy or insecure code.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good at juxtaposing the Windows and Unix way of doing things
This is one of my all time favorite books because it covers an important subject of integrating Windows and UNIX systems on the same network. The picture on the book's cover shows a rock climber straddling two vertical cliffs, a perfectly appropriate metaphor for the daunting task of maintaining interoperability.5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know is here
As a long time MCSE and CNE, my clients with UNIX have wanted me to help them integrate NT with UNIX. Prior to finding this book I was hesitant, but after reading it it didn't seem so complicated and should lead to increasedrevenue. 5-0 out of 5 stars New to Linux and Want to Install Software-This is the Book to get!
Unlike the Mac and Windoze world, installing software on Linux can require typing several text commands into the terminal. Even with Ubuntu, you have to use the terminal from time to time. This book explains it all from tarballs to RPMs, and compiling. This book is for EVERYONE, not just administrators.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to start Linux Admin and use as quick refrence

3-0 out of 5 stars OUT OF DATE!
I have been using portions of this book for five years and because it contains basic information, it gets 3 stars. That is the only reason.
1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete
This was probably a good book when it came out, but since then rpm has changed significantly. If Redhat would at least publish a consise list of the changes to the commands, I'd change my rating to 3 or 4 stars. As it is, you cannot use this book to diagnose problem in creating spec files or designing high-quality spec files.Until it is revised, you are better off looking at the man pages and how other people have written spec files.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any RPM developer
As the other reviewers mentioned, since this book was written in 1997, it is becoming outdated. The book talks about RPM version 2.0, but the current version is 4.0.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Written Book on Red Hat Linux I have found
Mohammed Kabir presents one of the best written books I have5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Redhat Server set up books in the market
In my opinion, the main strength of this book is the compilation of all the instructions you need to set up basic components of a network (web server, mail server, samba etc). With this book, a novice can possibly get a (fairly secured network up and running in just a few days). Mr Khabir also stress on security issues pertaining to each part of the setup.4-0 out of 5 stars In depth in most places

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of sound information, but not what I hoped to read
Mastering FreeBSD and OpenBSD Security (MFAOS) more or less delivers on its subtitle: "Building, securing, and maintaining BSD systems."The book is chock full of absolutely sound administration advice from three experts with plenty of operational experience.I am also thrilled whenever I find a new BSD title on bookshelves. However, I believe a second edition of this book should be radically altered to better deliver value to the reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well researched, illustrated and written
Another tight O'Reilly work. The text is tight. The illustrations are simple but effective. And the authors obviously know there stuff and have done a thorough job documenting it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, just missing one thing...
I was really hoping to see a chapter on systrace or other advanced host-based security tools (HIPS and other kernel utils). All in all, the book is a nice addition to any security library. The basic ideas of risk management and confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA), are covered throughout the book. I would say this is a good reference to use in addition to the man pages for both operating systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DESIGNED FOR BOTH ADVENTURERS AND ARDENT PALS
Every Linux Operating System involves a lot of things. This beautifully reinforced text did all that is needed to be done in providing extensive and reliable information on the OS. It dissected every aspect of the software. Whether you are an ardent Linux pal or just an adventurer, this book will alleviate your tuition problems. From software installation down to security and networking options, there is hardly anything that you would not find in this well-detailed text. Its depth and accuracy is unique. For switchers in particular, this "Linux Complete" provides the easiest and the most comprehensive way of adapting to the new Linux environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Info!
I've just finished reading From Bash to Z Shell from APress Publishing. It's taught this Linux NetAdmin several new tricks, and should be an addition to any Admin's bookshelf. It'll fit nicely next to your O'Reilly's.

I bought this book for two reasons: To get a quick view of the Z shell, which was excellent, and to complement the many books on Bash that I have. This is where it really shone.I found information here, and quickly, that I could not find elsewhere. I would recommend it for all Bash programmers. This comes from a Korn shell bigot, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good orientation
This book overs the opportunity to get aquinted with the different programming languages in Linux. The different programming languages in this book are introduced so that starting programmers can get "a taste" of the different languages and there capabillity. I am not a programmer. I started getting interested in programming thanks to Linux. Because the book handels different languages the only problem is the diversity which became a little confusing trying to read it all at once. The book is easy readable, it is well written. So overall a splendid introduction. Even some languages are introduced in such a way that you can already start using the examples and try some code for yourself. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
First, it's clear that often a reviewer will give a good book a bad rating because they don't understand the material of the book and are frustrated. I want to assure you that I am NOT one of those people. I am frustrated for far different reasons.
1-0 out of 5 stars definitely NOT a good book!
I don't think this is a good book. I have compared this book with other shell programming books and and found this book is not good at all. So when I need to refer a shell script book I would not use this one.Besieds, the author is really careless, this book contains a lot of errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Shell Programming Book I've Found Yet!
I own no less than ten books on shell programming and this one has helped me more than the rest combined. The author has the talent for condescending to my level to explain concepts that I have had a great deal of trouble understanding. I was able to write a menu driven script to simplify the loading and unloading of a tape library after reading just two chapters from the middle of the book. I even created my first shell function in the process. Yes there are a few typos. I'm not sure why some of the more sophisticated reviewers had a problem with this. I still found the book very useful and was able to catch the intended meaning in spite of the typos. If you are a genius this book may not be for you. If you are trying to learn how to write scripts quickly I highly recommend it. I would have traded all my other scripting books for this one had I known how useful it is. ... Read more

If you have never seen or used a computer before, this book MIGHT help you...but I doubt it.While there are pages and topics galore, there is very little substance. In most cases, the author does little more than tell you how to access an item from the menu (ie: from the drop-down box select xxx -or- select the widget you want to include in the frammit and select "save" from the "file" menu. After reading this text, you will have an understanding of how to start programs, make your windows and menu bars multi-colored, and how to save documents...but little else. The only redeeming factor to this book is that it is available for $1.69 used - I pity the folks who paid full price. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Will need Google if you want to recover from disk failure
I have to echo Lamar Thomas's review -- there is precious little on how to recover from a failed drive. You will have to go back to Google to learn how to recover from a single failed disk if using software raid to provide redundancy for your data.Having a paper reference for various types of disk recovery (in the case of not having a readily available web browser at the same site as the raid server machine) was the main reason I bought this book. So I was quite disappointed. Most of the book's material on hardware raid controllers is dated and by nature vendor specific. Moreover much of the material on creation of software raid that this book provides is unnecessary if one creates the raid partitions at installation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good summary of Linux RAID information
Description
3-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to RAID
"Managing RAID on Linux" by Derek Vadala is a great intro and reference for understanding and setting up your own Linux RAID system at home or at work. The book does a great job of defining the terminology, covering the various RAID levels and explaining the technology. It covers both software as well as hardware RAID solutions, planning and tuning. The chapter on file systems was informative and the chapter on performance, tuning and maintenance was very useful.Read more
