5-0 out of 5 stars Best among the LPIC prep books
I just passed LPIC 101 with a good score thanks to this book. It follows the LPIC objectives very closely. Since the publication of the book the objectives were updated at the end of last year, so you might have to read upon those changed ones.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Linux administration overview as well as study guide
I picked this book up to use as a study guide for taking the LPIC-1 102 exam.(I passed, by the way.)This book was good read that kept my interest and proved a good overview to Linux system administration as well as a LPIC-1 study guide. And it covered a few topics in generally better detail than some other Linux books I've read.Even after the test is passed, I expect I will refer back to this book from time to time as one of my Linux references.

Administering a Linux system isn't much like administering a Windows machine. Though the goals are similar and comparable problems arise under both environments, they each require administrators to adopt a certain way of thinking about processes and data. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book does the best job i've seen covering all the aspects needed to make the move from windows to linux administration. It also makes for an excellent reference for someone just starting out in linux that need a foothold to get going.I just wish I had found this book 3 years ago when i first started playing around with linux, it would have made my life so much easier.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows transition to Linux
I'm guilty; I've been a Windows user for the longest time. However, I've always wanted to experiment with Linux, but the difficulty of most installations and the configuration headaches were just too m uch for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars I give this book six stars out of five
I'd like to give this book more stars than just five. I'm an experienced Windows Systems Administrator, and I was advised it would be in my best interest to gain familiarity and experience with Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars No experience necessary
I have been working in a Windows IT environment for over 7 years, but had no Linux experience except for installing it on a test machine (but then again, even a 5 year-old could install it since it's so easy). But I never had to work with it in an enterprise level until now.Without any solid experience with Linux and armed only with this book (and 7 years of "figuring it out" IT skills), I managed to get Redhat ES v3 running on an old server class machine with an older RAID controller.I even got it to talk to Windows clients AND the old HP-UX servers (I didn't have Unix experience either!).The boss was impressed! This is an excellent book that doesn't get annoying (like those Dummies books) or pretends to be a "Linux Admin book for Beginners" like that other book that's out there.I started with an older version of this book from the library, and this new version is even better. This book is a great investment and I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right at my level
Now in its third edition along with a DVD that includes Full Fedora Core 4, the latest (as of 10/18/05). People have complained that this book (in its earlier editions) are too simplified and beginnerish. I guess then that I'm not enough of a guru to go to something more advanced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Very good book with lots of information, but sometimes the author gets carried away with his so-called version of MAN pages. If you need more detail on some stuff, you will need to reference some other book or check online. The book did have some errors and wrong diagrams, just wished someone have proof read it better.... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A quick glaze over some good topics - but
I think a book costing this much money should provide in-depth coverage of the topics. This looks like a rush job to me and very sophomoric. How do books like this make it through production?
5-0 out of 5 stars Good "bible" for beginners and those who wish to solve most common problems easily
This book is definitly not intended for professionals, and definition of "bible" is questionable when book deals with big things such as Debian. Of course this book can't solve every possible problem or show you everything. In order to achieve that, it should have few thousands pages :) However, it will serve you well if you wish a complete guidance in installing debian on common pc platforms and configuring it. It will give you good practical understanding of all linux and debian specific things needed for fast start and will cover most of things you might want to do. Some things You can no expect from this book: this book won't teach you for instance how to build stealth internet server and cover detailed configuration of every aspect of it, it won't teach you how to become supreme administrator etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the beginners
I have been a Debian user for two years, and have used GNU/Linux for the past three/four years. I thought I would learn a great deal from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new to intermediate level book
The Running Linux book is expanded and updated regularly and is designed to bring the casual and new user up to speed with using Linux as well as updated information. This is all done is a distribution-neutral context which makes it one of the better guides available.Of course that also presents problems when a particular distribution does something a little bit different from the norm.If you are a serious Linux enthusiast and have been for some time you will find the book too elementary for your needs but those new to Linux will find it a great introduction. The one real problem that I have with the book is that at times leaves out too much detail and as a result you can't really understand how to use something. An example is the entire section on MySQL and PHP.Then again, there are many excellent books available on these subjects and this is still more of an introductory guide so letting the reader know what can be done and then letting them seek out an appropriate text for the details is appropriate. Not to mention if it included all the details on all the subjects discussed then this would be a multi-volume work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Authors are so smart, they're dumb
This book is pitched, at least in part, to Linux beginners. But it fails in small, maddening ways when speaking to this audience. After a lot of discussion of disk partitioning and install, page 65 tells you to run the "man" command in a shell session. It offers no clue that the only way to terminate a "man" command is the letter Q - a completely unintuitive action. So a new user can flounder forever, or at least until they get frustrated and reboot. But I don't mean to slam just this book. That same problem exists in most other beginning Linux books, even O'Reilly's pocket guide. All these knowledgeable authors seem to think that noephytes will somehow magically gain access to information that the authors have in their heads, but haven't committed to paper.
5-0 out of 5 stars KEEP YOUR LINUX RUNNING
Are you a programmer who is increasingly using Linux because of its extensibility and low cost? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Matthias Kalle Dalheimer and Matt Welsh, have done an outstanding job of writing this 5th edition of a practical guide that provides you with an overview to Linux as a desktop and a back-office system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux for dummies
Like all the other Dummies series, the Linux for dummies is another great way to learn Linux. With this book you don't need to have a geek live with you to use and understand the powerful and useful computer enviroment. I have used Linux for several years and the book taught me a few things I didn't know about Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Linux Jump Start
If you are new to Linux like me and would like to learn Linux in a week then this book is a must have along with "Linux Pocket Guide".
3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Distros
I'll be frank.I was really looking forward to using this book. Making ISO copies of Linux distros can be a tedious and lengthy process. It's nice to know you can get the distros on one CD and check things out.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 Distributions, including Ubuntu
I know, I know! I should have at least tried Linux by now. But I hadn't. Then I found this book. Among all of the books on Linux at the book store, this one said, here's seven different distributions of Linux that you can install. Furthermore, in Chapter 4 it had 35 pages describing the different distributions. Why, for instance, would I want to install Xandros, Mandriva or SuSE instead of the Fedora (Red Hat) core. (Although I did find it a little strange that Debian wasn't discussed. But with 300+ distributions to choose from you have to cut it off somewhere.)
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
From the cover hype, I expected a complete turnkey program for installing and learning Linux. I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear guide to the basics and beyond of Linux administration
I found the book reads very clear. It gives brief background on moving around and using the commandline then moves on to topics that can be diffcult for newer linux users (compiling your own kernal anyone?) but does a good job of bringing the reader along. The chapters on comipling programs were excellent and very helpful. The book does a great job of explaining Iptables in only 5 pages. Also does good review about start-up scripts, rsync, printing, networking, cron.
5-0 out of 5 stars What every serious Linux user should know!
There are three books that I am currently using to learn Linux and obtain a professional certification in this area. One of the books is "How Linux Works: what every superuser should know" by Brian Ward, published by No Starch Press.Indeed, the publisher name speaks for itself and the author did a great job covering many subjects in Linux administration without creating hunderds of "filler" pages as with many books these days.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for curious minds
This book is about the inner workings of Linux. Whether you are a novice (suits perfectly), programmer, Sys Admin, home user or a researcher - if you are one of a kind who is always curious about the inner workings of the things, then this book is for you. Me being a programmer, I was drawn towards it as to better my understanding of Linux which I learned basically by reading online tutorials. The book is divided in three parts. 1. Part 1: Explains the basic layout & workings of Linux. 2. Part 2: Explains the programming tools available in Linux. 3. Part 3: Explains specialized information, such as Kernel, printing etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars DB2(R) SQL PL: Essential Guide for DB2(R) UDB on Linux(TM), UNIX(R), Windows(TM), i5/OS(TM), and z/OS(R) (2nd Edition
Has been extremely helpful. Good information

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book on DB2 SQL PL
I didn't know anything about writing DB2 stored procedures until I bought this book. After reading it I have written several procedures to aid in data migration. It is well laid out and has all the necessary information. The best part is that you don't feel like you are reading a technical book.

4-0 out of 5 stars embed yourself in db2
The book describes IBM's Procedural Language, which runs on their db2 servers. It is not a general purpose language, like C or Java. Rather, it is tied directly to db2 and IBM's implementation of SQL. But within this context, the book explains the expressive power of PL. It shows at length how you can write stored procedures, triggers and functions in PL. The level of detail and the cited examples should reassure you of PL's capability.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a beginner book
This book is listed as a beginner to intermediate book, but I would rate it as intermediate at the very least. The author has a fetish for unnecessarily elaborate terminology that overcomplicates straightforward operational activities (to exemplify my point). Otherwise, it is a good overview of the four technologies and how they work together to provide a seamless web presence.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource on this subject
One of the things I liked about this book was the amount of detail it had on its subjects, and yet it is not a 1000 page novel. If you just want to have a system running a web server and you don't really care about how it works and what is going on, then this is definitely not the book for you. However, if you really want to learn how these components work together and exactly what is going on, then I do recommend this book. After taking a Linux course, I picked this up and still learned quite a bit from the introduction to Linux chapter.Everything is very clearly written and easy to understand. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the pages are devoted to listing configuration files, but you can easily just skip over these if they don't apply to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed review of material covered
If you are looking for a book that provides a brief overview, you will be satisfied with Eric Rosebrock's book.If you are looking for a "how to" reference book that covers MySQL and PHP in depth, you will probably be disappointed. The book merely provides basic information as the title states: "Setting Up LAMP: Getting Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP Working Together" that being LAMP installation and configuration procedures on a FEDORA Linux environment. This book offers the necessary information to install FEDORA Linux, and getting your Apache web server operating with MySQL and PHP.Rosebrock's book does save you the time and effort of having to glean information from those various "open source computer geeks" (right brain) web sites. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nuts and Bolts
This certainly isn't a hand holding introduction to Linux by any means (jump in at the deep end, it works!).However if you're looking for a down to earth, practical guide to a variety of everyday tasks involved in running Linux in a server environment you'll find this book very useful. The subject matter covered is useful, and the explanations are sufficient with plenty of useful examples.Certainly a good introduction although obviously for the finer points of configuration more specialised sources will need to be consulted.

5-0 out of 5 stars great cookbook style linux admin book
I'm a big fan of the cookbook approach to tech books. I usually don't have time to read a book to get a broad and general understanding of a topic.I'm usually after what this book promises: a quick fix.I want answers to discrete problems. That's what _Linux(R) Quick Fix Notebook_ delivers. When I did have time to read an entire chapter, I learned a lot. When I flipped to random pages, there was a good chance I learned something. It's full of gold nuggets and neat tricks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this book 1996 when I was in high school. It was challenging, and now when I returned to it in 2006, I realize how much I skipped on my 96' reading. The great thing with this book (at least the 96 edition) is that is has such a nice flow. You will learn the concepts of Unix programming, introduced in a perfect order and pace.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
As a true beginner, I had a lot of trouble understanding the concepts in the book. It did not give nearly as many examples as were necessary nor was the presentation beginner friendly. I wouldn't recommend this book... unfortunately, I don't know of a good alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book!
I've read several books on programming, and several on Linux. This book covers a ton of stuff, some easy, some complex, but all useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gets you up and running with Linux programming
All the topics that one needs to read to come up to speed with Linux programming, development and maintenance, scripting and even tuning are covered in this book. The author starts with the basic architecture of the Linux operating system, and delves into the details of each part: scheduler, memory manager, virtual file system, network, ipc and init. The reader starts with an overview of what the Linux operating system looks like "under the hood", and is taken thru a series of sections that cover application development using each section of the Linux kernel.Overview application programming, performance analysis and debugging using various GNU tools such as the the GCC complier, make, gcov and gprof are given first and are used throughout the book by the author to further demonstrate the features and benefits of the available GNU tools.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Linux Application programming
Written for application developers, this book is a great source of information on working with the GNU/Linux architecture and process model. If you know something about programming but want to know how to use those skills in the GNU/Linux environment this is one of the best books available. The coverage is thorough and filled with coding examples to illustrate the concepts. To make your life easier it even has all the coding examples included on a CD in the back of the book.Areas examined include the GNU compiler, automake, shells, scripting, creating and using libraries, named pipes, semaphores, sockets, and shared memory. The book wraps up with a section on debugging and testing your application.GNU/Linux Application Programming is an excellent source of information for the new to intermediate GNU/Linux programmer and highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ESR Helps the Intermediate Software Developer Understand His Environment
This is my second experience with ESR's books, and I've been very pleased with both of them.Looking at software development from his "anthropologist" perspective, has proven extremely helpful in better understanding my experiences in the industry, and especially in seeing things about people and processes that I didn't realize were there until he'd pointed them out.I don't think this would have made much sense to me if I was new to the software development environment, but now that I've been in it for several years and experienced different people and different groups with their own different processes, ESR's conceptual insights have helped me evaluate my own way of working and thinking.I highly recommend this book to anyone who's been in software development for at least three years... I think your own experience is very important to have behind you when reading ESR's books. This kind of reading led me to the Fred Brook classic "The Mythical Man-Month", which I think is still full of applicable insights (a whopping 30 years after it was first published).

4-0 out of 5 stars For those who question why open source makes sense
Eric Raymond presents a coherent and well-supported case that explains why open source makes commercial sense. Putting aside the "religious" fervor of some of his arguments, the logic on why the open source movement can spawn successful businesses is irrefutable. Read it and you will understand why traditional (proprietary) software business models have become a dying breed. I would rate the book a "5" but for some parts where the text becomes somewhat convoluted and repetitive. Overall, a must-read for anyone involved in software development. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Anyone who's done programming work knows that you spend half your coding time looking for other people's solutions to the problems you're facing in your project. Particularly when you're dealing with times, dates, standard calculations, and other common problems, you find yourself saying, "Someone must have solved this before." And, indeed, someone usually has. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality book, a keeper
I learned about this book from its sister book, Linux Kernel Primer: A Top-Down Approach for x86 and PowerPC Architecture. While the kernel book is not a good one at all, this one is a true gem. The writing is clear, lucid, and the examples are from the real world and thoroughly explained. In contrast, the kernel book gives overly broad and general introduction to a subject and then dives into the source code with disconnected commenting; there is such a big gap between the intro and the source code that it's not readable at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great real world examples
Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals is a great book that covers three main concepts in Linux programming: files, processes and debugging. In each part the author explains and gives several examples of functions, systems calls and APIs that will help the Linux programmer. He also includes several real world examples of how these concepts are implemented. Here are the some things that I found interesting:

5-0 out of 5 stars Network Security Hacks
The book is very well written in a professional form. I was able tolearn a lot out of it. It should be in every IT security persons library. But it is not a book for beginners. Although all issues are well explained, a certain computer background is needed, and not basic knowledge only. The book is worth its price.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for both Linux and Windows
First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.
4-0 out of 5 stars insight into security
Security has been high on my list of things to understand and master these past two years. Our company's firewall has been breached numerous times. This has scared the living daylights out of our stakeholders. I have therefore been forced to become an expert. This is one of the books that has helped me attain this level of understanding. It offers insights not available in regular how to guides on security. ... Read more
