5-0 out of 5 stars Quick,, Handy Reference for a former DB2 for z/OS DBA
If you are coming from mainframe DB2, this is the book for you. Phil Gunning does a great job of explaining the many parameters and settings that make up DB2 UDB. Explanations are clear and straight to the point. It helped me to understand the DB2 UDB architecture and to get up to speed quick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tips from A DB2 Veteran
This book has helped my get started on monitoring and tuning my databases. Coming from Sybase, I had no idea where to start. I picked up this book and it guided me through all the monitoring setups and provided a monitoring and tuning methodology -- along with recommendations. This stays on my desk and is very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind
This book is really well organized. The section on logical and physical design was a good review for me. It reminded me how important a good design is to a successful database implementation. The SQL Tuning, Buffer pool tuning, and DB and DBM CFG tuning chapters have helped me take care of my problem databases and suboptimal SQL. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY
A book that steps through the important parts of the kernel and explains each point. Ive read other Linux kernel books before (ie: Oreillys Understanding the Linux kernel), and this book is by far the best read for the advanced user that has some programming experience and wants dive into tinkering around with the kernel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Linux Guy...
This is a pretty solid book for beginners... as to the reviewer who disapointed that this "only scratched the surface", perhaps he should look up what the definition of a primer is ...
2-0 out of 5 stars Sample Chapter Disappointing
I didn't purchased the book yet. I downloaded the sample chapter "Scheduling and Kernel Syncronization" and found it quite disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars is it germane to your usage of linux?
If you are a linux or unix user, then you're probably pretty familiar with the permissions settings on files. It's a basic methodology that is essentially unchanged over 20 years or more or unix development. But its shortcomings have been just as well known to unix experts over that time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for licensors
I have studied and compared Open Source licenses for a number of years.I came to the conclusion that the licenses created by Mr. Rosen were the best and I adopted one of them for my own Open Source projects.I have also read his book on the subject and I have concluded that it is also the best in its field.I recommend his book as a must-read for licensors of Open Source content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reference
When I recieved this book I was excited, finally I could read a book which would help my brain really understand all the licenses! I sat down to read it, and was impressed with how the author took the popular licenses and broke them down into more easily understandable. I mean, they *are* fairly straight forward, but the author gets into what they actually mean in legal terms, and that's interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and by a Lawyer.
Open source software is growing explosively around the world. The SourceForge web site now lists 87,006 projects being done by 912,545 people. That's almost a million people writing code, probably more than all of the programmers employed by Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, etc. etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars small and excellent
Very practical and after every command there is a very useful example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, quick reference
This is an excellent reference to the MySQL language. It is faster to use than the online MySQL documentation, and can go anywyere. This is a better reference to MySQL than the O'Reilly book 'SQL in a Nutshell' (first edition), which left out many key MySQL commands and clauses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
It covered alot of things, but I thought it was a little bit too vague. I would of rather liked to see more coding then words explaining the coding. A complete script for example would of been nice instead of just code snippets.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks flow and some details
Looking at the Table of Contents we find a good start: (1) Introduction, and (2) Getting Started. Then we go in a direction I find illogical: (3) Event Handling, (4) Window Basics, (5) Drawing and Printing, (6) Handling Input, and (7) Window Layout Using Sizers.I believe that a better order would have been (4), (7), (3), (6), (5).
4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get started with wxWidgets
I found this book to be very usefull in guiding me into developing with wxWidgets. It covers a lot of the major aspects one would need to develop professional cross-platform applications with wxWidgets.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful If You Use 2003 R2!
So far, this book has been very informative and helpful. The authors do a good job of telling you just what you need to know -- nothing more, nothing less.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Windows Admins
This is a good supplement to those who own 'Linux for Windows Administrators'.My only complaint is that it tends to rely on GUIs or webmin for some configuration (leaving out what they are configuring). If you're using RHEL or Fedora, you're in good shape but if you're using another Linux OS, you're left in the dark.Other than that, it is a wonderful reference and was invaulable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply unbeatable
This is an amazing book. It takes you though all the various permutations of Windows and Linux interoprerability. It pulls no punches on the good and bad points of each system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real-World OS Nuts and Bolts
This book doesn't just talk about Linux; it talks about how a modern OS sitting on a modern architecture functions, in real detail.I have seen many OS texts, and this one is unique in that it does not attempt to teach theory, or academic examples.Want to understand scheduling, interrupts, file system abstractions, address spaces?Read this. Even if you don't use or care about Linux particularly. It will demystify these critical topics, which you can then apply to whatever platform or code you're working with, especially if you work with kernel or related components.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only Linux kernel book you need
There are two type of programmers, those who start with papers and those who start with code. If you are like me, who start with code, this is the only book you need to learn about linux kernel and to use it as a quick reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars mixed, other books are better
I've been reading kernel books for nearly 20 years -- this is not recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Novices
OK. I bought the book, Linux Toys, for one reason and one reason only: Chapter 15 - Digital Picture Frame. There is just not enough info in the book for neophites such as myself. The website: www/linuxtoys.com does not help either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Performance Tuning for Linux Servers
Each chapter is written by a different person, and as result there's a rather disparate feel to the whole book. It's more like collection of scientific paper, authored by stuffy prefessors cooped up in a dusty office somewhere. The words are interesting and well written, and there's plenty to learn, but if you're expecting a group of quick hacks to impress your boss on Monday morning, you'll be disappointed. You will however, be a better and wiser systems administrator.
2-0 out of 5 stars not so good
I found this book to be uneven, and to have problems getting the details right, even in some simple cases.I really wanted to like this book, and I hope IBM can put together a second edition that fixes the serious flaws this one has.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to disagree
I just can't bring myself to like this.I did find it uneven in spite of the editors obvious attempts at blending.I want to like it - individually the chapters are excellent, but I just have trouble seeing this as a coherent work. For me, it's choppy and the different styles make me uncomfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux "Must Have" book for servers or desktop client
First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and clever
Just a couple days after I had started thumbing through this book my boyfriend picked it up and stole it for 2 weeks. The result? "This book rocks."
3-0 out of 5 stars A simple 'quick tips' book
This book is more of a 'quick tips' book. There are literally thousands of websites that have the same information, and many of them are interactive where you can ask questions, etc.

Editorial Review

TCP/IP packet handling may seem crystal clear when you first hear about it, but after you've configured your Ethernet card's netmask address, the details become rather vague. You might find yourself asking--if you were a Danish prince--"What is a packet, if its chief good and market of its time be but to route and wrap?" If routing and wrapping were all packets did, we would all enjoy our ignorance blissfully. But packets--like men, as the prince learned--can be hollow carriers of ill will, and excluding the bad ones requires us to understand what they really truly are. At last.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to ELISP and customization
Once you're done with "C-h t", you'll want a little bit of help learning how to get more mileage out of your Emacs. The next step should be "GNU Emacs and XEmacs". I have found this book to be a great guide to everything beyond the basics of editing. It provides a friendly and accessible guide to learning what Emacs is capable of, without overwheming the reader with details that aren't important to the intermediate user. It's not going to make you an ELISP master, but it doesn't pretend to. 4-0 out of 5 stars Only XEmacs book around
While I very much enjoy all of the emacs books, this one is the only one which has XEmacs specific info, e.g., using (gnuserv-start) to let XEmacs be an XEmacs server. If you want info specific to Xemacs, get this. For general emacs, the O'Reily and FSF books are a must. For more advanced works, other FSF books on LISP are also quite useful. This book has enough extra info to recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A major waste of paper and money
This seminal work lacks badly both a focus and a meaningful content.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated Linux programming book
I read both editions of this book. When I read the 1st edition, the 2nd was not out, yet. Then the 2nd came out, I read it, too, hoping it's much improved. I was not impressed, however, either. To me, there is plenty of what listed in the book, but not enough why on the things listed.
4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of good info in one place, but organization needs work
The Linux operating system provides a sophisticated framework for running programs. Within its sturdy covers, Linux Application Development by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan provides much of what intermediate to advanced programmers need to know to take advantage of that framework.
4-0 out of 5 stars Will become a well-worn addition to your programming shelf..

5-0 out of 5 stars a useful reference
I bought this book to give me a quick boost on Linux and Knoppix as a whole. As with a number of these "Hack" books there is usually a good pearl or Hack to make the book worth while.
5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, Answers to all my Knoppix/Linux questions
First, I have been trying to accomplish several things in the Linux environment that I knew could be made much easier:

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed about the installation instructions.
The big reason why I purchased this book was because it claimed it was great about security and it said it would show how to setup these services the correct way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Focused
I read every column of paranoid penguin and they are quite good. This book is ok, but not great. They (I mean they because several chapters are not by Mike) try to cover a huge amount of information and make the mistake of being both too broad in some areas and too specific in others.Overall, there wasn't a cohesive glue to bring the chapters together into a single vision.
4-0 out of 5 stars For sys admins
